Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told reporters late Tuesday that the ongoing efforts to end the war between Tehran and Washington is a "complex process" and its important to allow "continuity" for that process to play out. This was followed after President Donald Trump said on Tuesday the United States is extending its ceasefire with Iran at Pakistan's request as he waits for a unified proposal from the Islamic Republic.

00:09I think it is very important that we give continuity to the process.
00:14This is a complex process.
00:16We have the nuclear aspect, which is, of course, extremely complex, and this is the one where
00:21I, as IEA, have been engaging with.
00:25But there are, of course, other important issues related to the Hormuz passage, related
00:32to ballistic missiles, related to regional questions.
00:35So I think it's very important that an opportunity for peace is given.
00:39There's still a war there.
00:41We have to be conscious of that.
00:44There is a ceasefire, and luckily I learned that it has been extended.
00:52But we are in a state of war.
00:56The situation of the strait will inevitably need to be solved in conjunction with the others,
01:05because the freedom of passage has become a bargaining chip between the sides, because
01:15of the underlying tensions.
01:18So inevitably, that will have to be addressed in conjunction with other problems.
01:23But of course, we need to assure freedom of navigation.
01:25It is essential for world economy.
01:27It is essential for all.
01:29Can you talk about what your role and the IEA role has been in the negotiations between
01:34the U.S. and Iran, and whether they have asked you to come on, IEA to come on and do
01:40any
01:40oversight of any nuclear deal they plan to make?
01:42Well, we have been engaged in this process for a long time, even before this negotiation.
01:48And in this negotiation until February, until the beginning of this new war.
01:52And as for the current phase, we are in touch separately with both sides.
02:00Because of what our colleague was mentioning just now, they are dealing with other things.
02:03So, we haven't been physically there, but we are engaged in the solution of the issue.
02:10What is clear, and I think we have heard different players in this, including in the United States,
02:18is that if and when an agreement is reached, the IEA will have to be there very fine.
02:25Otherwise, you will, as I myself said, you will have an illusion of an agreement and not an agreement.
02:31You have to have the inspectors there checking that what has been agreed is being complied with.
02:47You
