00:00If you've got a Garmin watch or you're planning to buy one this year,
00:03then you need to know about these three cool features.
00:06First up is route creation.
00:08If you're running, hiking, or cycling,
00:10unless you're doing an out-and-back route,
00:12it's helpful to know exactly how far you're going.
00:15By creating a course in the Garmin Connect app and exporting it to your watch,
00:18you can follow the breadcrumb trail right in Garmin's OnWatch workout app,
00:22and it'll even reroute you if you go off course.
00:25I used this feature a lot during marathon training.
00:28When I was planning long runs around unfamiliar London routes ahead of time.
00:32To create a course, here's what you do.
00:34In the training and planning section,
00:35go to courses, create a course, select your discipline,
00:39then choose whether you want a custom route or you want to let Garmin create you one.
00:44Let's choose automatic for now.
00:46Pick a distance and direction,
00:47and Garmin Connect will create your route automatically.
00:51Number two is gear tracking.
00:52The gear tab in Garmin Connect shows subcategories for running shoes,
00:56bikes, and other items.
00:58It allows you to input a brand and model,
01:00a maximum distance before you get a notification about the gear needing to be retired,
01:04and the categories of exercise the gear will automatically be added to.
01:08This is important.
01:10For runners, the foam in running shoes wears down after around 300 to 500 miles,
01:14and that doesn't just mean a loss of speed and comfort.
01:18Old, worn out running shoes affect your gait,
01:20putting you at risk of Achilles tendonitis after miles and miles of microtrauma.
01:25Under the more tab in Garmin Connect, tap gear and then add.
01:28You'll be able to choose the type of gear,
01:31give it a name, date it from first use, and set a maximum distance.
01:35You can also switch between multiple pieces of gear before starting a workout.
01:40Got your course? Got your gear?
01:42Now it's time to set yourself a target speed,
01:44whether that's to slow yourself down for some zone 2 training,
01:47or push yourself to pick up the pace.
01:49Garmin's PacePro is its virtual pacing software.
01:52Simply create the course in Garmin Connect as usual,
01:56and access PacePro through the training and planning tab,
01:59then PacePro racing strategies.
02:01Choose a course or a distance,
02:03but the course is better because it takes elevation into account,
02:06by delineating when you should go slow and when to go fast.
02:10And the app will create a PacePro strategy,
02:12which you can then use in the running workout mode,
02:15on your watch, when that course is selected.
