00:00Today I'm going to be looking at this Sagan
00:03slash Descali branded ADSL modem
00:07from quite a few years ago
00:11so this was in the days when
00:15ADSL up to 8 meg services were the norm
00:18and to get those feeds was really quite lucky and many people
00:22even if they could get them couldn't afford to subscribe to them
00:25so this is just the installation CD that came with it
00:29so you can see there Descali's old logo
00:32which is internet with a passion
00:35obviously they're called TalkTalk now
00:37there's been lots of acquisitions with various different companies since this was published
00:41so you can see
00:43just the basic sort of contents there
00:46and then just as we open it up
00:48you can see there's the CD there
00:51with just some basic instructions
00:54and then this
00:55is the installation CD we're on
00:57so I'll just put that back again
00:59and that says copyright 2004
01:01so it provides the age of this thing
01:05now the modem itself
01:07is a Sagan Fast 800 E3
01:12which you can see there
01:13and this is a GDMT
01:17fairly standard 8 meg
01:18so what we would call
01:21ADSL Max in this country
01:23it's a bog standard modem
01:27it's on the back you can see it's just USB
01:33and DSML
01:34so basically phone line in
01:35so this is basically designed for one computer
01:37but the connection could be shared
01:39if you use internet connection sharing
01:42on your chosen computer
01:43so in that regard it looks fairly simple
01:46and based on the data sheet
01:47this came out around about 2002
01:52opening it up is very easy
01:53so you've just got to peel the tape back there
01:56and then take the screw out
01:57it's sort of a specialist type
01:59but a normal straight screwdriver
02:02managed to do the job perfectly fine for me
02:06and then it's just a case of
02:08sort of breaking the latches on the edges there
02:12and then when you open it up
02:14it's a very very simple setup indeed
02:18so the board just flips out
02:20it's a single side of the board
02:22there's nothing on the other side
02:24and then what we basically have is
02:26an analogue device as Eagle 3
02:28which is part of what they call
02:31sort of a two chip AESL modem solution
02:33and as you can see
02:35by and large
02:35it's just a two chip solution
02:37as they say
02:38so basically what happens is
02:40you get the AESL line coming in there
02:42a bit of filtering
02:44so you get the primary connection chip there
02:47and then you just get the USB controller
02:51sort of interfacing device
02:52which then connects to the USB out port there
02:57so that's basically all that's in this
02:59and it does kind of have a smell of
03:02semi-old electronics
03:03but there's not really that much
03:05to speak about in that department
03:07so it's basically just a
03:09really sort of basic modem
03:13for the kind of broadband that you've got at the time
03:16I mean we got it in I think probably about 2006
03:18when we signed up for
03:20an up to probably 2 megabit of a second ADSL line
03:25which by today stands for many people
03:28would be pretty diabolical
03:30but in those days
03:31it was pretty good
03:34but I guess what you probably want me to do
03:36is to install the software and kind of demo it a little bit
03:39which is why I've got
03:40this Windows 2000 VM starting
03:42although the software will work in Windows XP
03:45and I think possibly even beyond that
03:48so you can see I have the CD opened up here
03:52so I just double click on Tiscali
03:53then this box appeared
03:55and it sort of shows the loading of their logo
03:58and obviously the internet with a passion business
04:02so then we go install Tiscali broadband
04:05and it'll probably just load from one of the
04:07directories up there
04:09but we'll see what happens
04:11so yeah
04:12we have all those things
04:15so just press next
04:16oh god
04:17I'm not going to stick all our details in
04:20obviously I'm not a customer
04:21so I'm really going to have to kind of fake this
04:23but
04:23the modem's not going to be connected to an actual line
04:26so it should be alright
04:27and yeah no surprise
04:28Isaac was perfectly happy with my made up details
04:32because obviously
04:33he doesn't think it's even got an internet connection at this point
04:37so right
04:38connect the USB cable to your modem
04:41right I've now done that
04:42and you can see all the
04:45and the story advice has been popping up
04:47so just press continue
04:49yeah I've done that
04:51do-do-do
04:54right
04:56continue
04:58do-do-do-do-do
05:00do-do-do
05:01done all that
05:02right finish
05:06there's some
05:07as I'm ready for us to connect
05:08obviously it's not actually going to be able to connect here
05:11but you can see that
05:13the Ibs and John Smith thing there
05:15but you can see it's not
05:17going to connect to it
05:19and obviously Windows thinks this is a dial-up connection
05:21which is
05:22kind of fairly humorous in some ways
05:24but
05:26and then you just get the
05:27so USB software wizard
05:30that
05:30you can sort of download
05:32as a standalone
05:33unbranded
05:34product
05:35at the same time
05:37but yeah
05:38that's a look at
05:40this
05:40simple
05:41ADSL modem
05:42from
05:43some time ago
05:44OK
05:44you
05:45Merci.
