00:01Songs are the soundtracks of our lives.
00:04We use songs to make sense of this world,
00:07to tell people we love them,
00:08reveal that we're vulnerable,
00:10and prove that we're defiant.
00:13In this series, we're inviting extraordinary people
00:16from across Britain to sing the one song
00:19that means the most to them
00:21and tells their incredible story.
00:26But can they summon the courage
00:28to step into the spotlight...
00:31I'm just hoping that I can hold together today.
00:34..in front of a huge crowd...
00:36I'm so sorry.
00:38..and share it with all of us.
00:40I'm excited, I'm nervous, I'm s***ing myself, sorry, I'm...
00:45When I was a little girl...
00:48Travelling across Britain.
00:51The Your Song stage will showcase amazing songs.
00:57Song by remarkable people.
00:59I'm 90, come on!
01:03Post-revolution singing.
01:05It was an act of rebellion.
01:08This song saved my life.
01:12Watching will be two of the UK's most acclaimed singer-songwriters.
01:16I'm up in space.
01:18Eurovision legend Sam Ryder.
01:20He's amazing.
01:21He's honest.
01:22I feel nothing but truth.
01:27And multi-million selling global pop icon.
01:30I wanna go out, can I go out?
01:32Paloma Faye.
01:33All of your feelings come right out of your voice.
01:37It's so amazing.
01:41In each city.
01:43In each city.
01:43Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
01:46Human kindness.
01:48They'll have to decide who should get the chance to perform.
01:52It's absolutely pure feeling.
01:55Mm-hm.
01:57At a once-in-a-lifetime concert.
01:59At London's iconic Hackney Empire.
02:06Tonight, like the thousands that came to see us across the country.
02:11It's been a long couple of years.
02:13You're about to feel just how powerful a song can be.
02:18You're not the issue.
02:19There's nothing wrong with you.
02:21I hope you don't mind.
02:23I hope you don't mind.
02:25That I put down in words.
02:27And it was like it was your song.
02:29You didn't break my heart.
02:31Aww.
02:32How wonderful life is
02:37Now you're in the world
02:46So ferry across the Mersey
02:51And always take me there
02:55The place I love
02:58The first port of call for your song's travelling stage
03:01is the city that's produced the most number one hits in the world.
03:05This week we are in Liverpool, unofficially known as the world capital of pop.
03:10Very shortly, some incredible talented singers are going to be singing it on this very stage.
03:16But who will Paloma and Sam choose to sing in the grand final?
03:19Welcome to your song!
03:24Here I'll stay
03:25Here I'll stay
03:28Sam, we're in Liverpool!
03:30Here we are. Buzzing.
03:31Massive musical history.
03:33Yeah, huge heritage here.
03:3450 number one hits have come out of Liverpool
03:37and do you know who the first woman ever from Liverpool was to top the charts?
03:41Give me the stat. Give me the stat.
03:42It was Lita Rosa with, how much is that dog in the window?
03:46Delta.
03:47The one with the waggly tail!
03:51Artists that have come from Liverpool
03:52The Beatles, Cilla Black, Frankie Goes to Hollywood
03:56Rebecca Ferguson, The Wombats, Zootons
04:00What do you think it is that's made Liverpool the source of so much music?
04:04I reckon we're literally stood on the reason
04:07Like we're at Albert Dock now
04:08And in the 50s and 60s all the amazing records that were being made in the US
04:12Like Chuck Berry, Elvis, they came here first
04:16Those vinyl records were on ships
04:17So people working here were bringing the vinyls off the boats
04:20So everyone would hear it first here
04:22I do see some clouds on the horizon
04:25And it is forecast for rain but who knows what could happen
04:28What I can predict however
04:29Is that these guys are going to absolutely smash it
04:32Shall we go and listen?
04:33I can't wait
04:36Let's go
04:37But Paloma and Sam won't be listening alongside me in the audience down by the stage
04:41Oh hi guys!
04:43Can you see Paloma Faith and Sam Ryder up there?
04:46This is the ultimate crow's nest we've got here
04:49They see and hear everything on stage and behind the scenes whilst hidden in a nearby hotel
04:55I'm on the edge of my seat here
04:57And now with everyone in position
04:59Ladies and gentlemen let's get on with the show
05:02I love you!
05:04All that's left is for someone to sing
05:07Pop yourself here Elliot
05:09Another camera's going to come in a second
05:11Here we are
05:11Oh we're in, we're in!
05:13Happy days!
05:16Give me that brush but it's quick
05:17They're coming, we've got a walker
05:19My name's Elliot and I'm 17 from Liverpool
05:2317 years old and he's got that beard
05:25I need to get some tips there
05:26Quick, they're coming
05:29I mean I've never put myself up for anything like it before
05:31Had me mum backing me up every step of the way so
05:34Who's more nervous here?
05:35Me!
05:37My legs will go when Elliot starts singing
05:40I love me mum
05:42I love you
05:44Hi!
05:45Hi Elliot, how you doing?
05:47Bit nervous
05:48Oh don't be nervous, I'm here for you
05:50You alright? Sit yourself down
05:52What are you nervous about?
05:54The crowd
05:54The crowd?
05:55So how are we going to get you to the stage?
05:57Are you going to do this today?
05:58Yeah, knowing that my mum's out there
06:00She's proud of me and sad
06:01Aw, is she a special one?
06:04Best person in the world
06:05Aw, that's so lovely
06:10I've known right from the stars Elliot was going to sing
06:16If you're in the car, you'll start singing
06:18Something needs to
06:22It's just constantly singing all the time
06:26Sometimes I go, oh peace
06:29Quiet
06:30I'm not always sang, I think
06:36I started singing it was more of an escapism
06:39Because at the time it was just a very rough patch of my life
06:42If I just sing, it'll go away
06:43If I just sing, shut my eyes, it'll go away
06:49Elliot came to me when he was five years old
06:54The day Elliot arrived, he came with a social worker
06:59And this little boy who I thought was so cute looking
07:03Got out of the car
07:06Elliot was only supposed to be with me for six weeks
07:08And then he just said, would you take him full time?
07:11And he's been with me for 12 years
07:16What are you singing today?
07:17Today I'm singing Fall On Me by Andrea and Matteo Bocelli
07:20Lovely, what is it about this song that's so special to you?
07:24The whole lyric, Fall On Me, it's just so powerful
07:26And I relate to it so much because no matter what
07:28I know my mum's always there for me
07:30It's just been a pillar for me my whole life
07:32When you just wanted two ice creams to yourself
07:37The first time I heard the song, all I could think about was me mum
07:40I was scared
07:41It talks about a parent and child relationship
07:45The bondage between a mother and child
07:47That's something so special
07:48Who was you? Sweaty Eddie
07:50Sweaty Eddie
07:52I don't think a mother is someone who gives birth to you
07:55A mother is someone who brings you up in the world
07:57Teaches you morals and teaches you how to become the man you are today
08:01On you go Alison
08:03When it comes to speaking I'm not the best of words
08:06There's a lot I want to say but I don't think I could ever say
08:09Have a slurp on that
08:10Thank you
08:11Which is why I picked this song because it says everything I needed to say to my mum
08:15The lovely Elliot
08:19I was in such an awful place and you were like an angel
08:22You came down from heaven and you got me better than any other mum I could have asked for
08:28You got me because it's my subject
08:31Your baggage is chatting
08:33When you have a baby though you realise immediately you can love any baby
08:37Now I just look at all of them and I'm like I'd have any of you
08:45I wouldn't let him go either
08:46I thought sooner or later the lights up above
08:53Would come down in circles and guide me to love
08:58But I don't know what's right for me I cannot see straight
09:02Oh, lovely voice
09:05Really classy vocal
09:07Play like a cannonball straight through my soul
09:11I really get Sam Smith in the tone
09:14Real chest voice
09:16I'm willing to fight
09:18You'll feel the resonance
09:19It just adds so much power
09:20With every step I keep questioning what is true
09:25Solid, isn't it?
09:26Yeah, stoic
09:31It's a juxtaposition to his story because he didn't have that in his early childhood
09:36He just feels like this pillar of strength because of his mum
09:40With all your light
09:46He's got me
09:48He is fantastic
09:55I close my eyes and I'm seeing you everywhere
10:04I step outside
10:06I love that as well as you're attacking
10:08I step outside
10:12I think the lyrics I feel the most when I'm singing it to my mum
10:16You can feel you're there
10:24Never been at a point where my mum's ever been there for me
10:26Showing me what it was to be there for people, no matter what
10:29And I'd be able to repay her for everything that she's given me
10:32But try everything in my heart apart
10:34If it wasn't for my mum, I wouldn't have been here today
10:37Absolutely not
10:49Can I go and give him a hug?
10:51Go, pass this on
10:52With her
10:59With the light
11:00With the light
11:03Welcome, to my總
11:18guide
11:19He's got my most beautiful smile
11:25you're so special Elliot and such a testament to you and your relationship and what you did
11:31thank you for bringing the best out of him because he's amazing he's what this world needs
11:36yeah thanks for Loma and we'll see you later yeah
11:44oh wow that was amazing I actually feel like screaming I can't help but fall in love with him
11:54man you were stunning thank you I love you getting into the final we're looking for someone who's got
12:02a strong story and has the ability vocally to connect their story with their performance
12:08hundred percent Elliot did that and I found it really moving how long have we got to the next
12:14one I just want to chat about singing I can't stop singing's class but before our next singer can take
12:22to the stage the heavens have opened okay oh that poor girl in the rain so hopefully they can use
12:35it
12:35as like something that aids the emotion rather than hinders I'm Georgia I'm 22 and I'm from
12:42Liverpool I mean the rain's a bit unfortunate oh I'm so excited oh she's real I'm real babs how
12:52you doing Georgia oh you sound like a proper scouse yeah I am the scouse as you can get my
12:59look so what
13:00are you gonna sing for us today today I'm singing 17 going under by Sam Fender oh cool
13:06the one everyone mixes you up with yeah as long as interesting because it's really hard to not
13:12hear it with Sam's accent mmm why have you chosen that song it's about growing up working class and in
13:19a
13:19council estate and all that kind of stuff and you know I just want to like prove to people that
13:24scousers can
13:28grow up on a council estate everyone knows each other and if not you know someone that knows someone
13:32so it's very friendly it's warm hello hiya how's your singing go good it's going good I loved it
13:40my mum said hello did she yeah I know she's in work all the time yeah growing up we did
13:47have to work hard
13:47for what we had my mum was a single mom with three daughters since she was little I've supported
13:56out 150% scrimped and saved to buy the guitar she wants singing lessons it's been hard but it's been
14:04worth it I didn't want to stay on the estate forever I wanted to go to uni I wanted to
14:11do things and I've
14:11kind of grew from it
14:19there's a huge stigma to being scouse we often get called poor and lower status class especially when I went
14:27to
14:27university where I still did classical music it was definitely stereotypes there ladies and gentlemen
14:33she's homegrown her name is Georgia when I sing the song it does get me emotional the song is about
14:41growing up in a lower social class and this is me saying I'm a decent person and we all are
14:46and
14:46we can go places and we can do things just like everyone else then I realized what would it be
14:54like if I sang in my own accent I'm excited for this yeah same
14:59I remember the sickness was forever
15:05I remember snow videos
15:10I love that she's singing in her own accent
15:12it's almost you need to celebrate where you're from singing this song
15:17I was far too scared to hit him but I'll hit him in a heartbeat now that's the thing with
15:25anger
15:26it begs to stick her out and it can fleece you of your beauty like you want to believe
15:32leave your spend when on to offer makes you hate the ones who love you you hate them like they're
15:41nothing
15:41the main takeaway for me for Georgia's voice it feels like spoken word but whatever she lacks in her vocal
15:48ability
15:48is made up for with that authenticity we're talking about storytelling here
15:53see I spend my teens in range
15:57spiraling in silence
15:59and I owe myself with a grin
16:02cause I was always the bloody joker
16:05what are you doing goosebumps singing?
16:07it's not almost performing for anyone
16:11it's just channeling her lived experience
16:14drenched in cheap drink and snide fags
16:18someone once said to me
16:19music is always for yourself
16:21and anything that comes of it is a bonus
16:23it doesn't matter what exposure I get
16:25who's filming me
16:29it's something so personal that makes you feel so intensely
16:34it's the most beautiful thing in the world to me
16:39she said it
16:40dance, dance, dance, dance
16:43so I thought about shifting gears
16:45when I sing in my own accents
16:47I do hope there's a kid watching
16:49and realises that they can also do it too
16:54it's our city and we should be proud of it
16:56so I do it with all the Scousers
16:57because I'm one of them and I love them
16:59I'm 17 going under
17:0317 going under
17:07talking about when we bring our own emotional baggage
17:10to these things right
17:11which is true
17:12we're both getting goosebumps
17:13because we came from backgrounds where
17:16there was no leg up
17:17and it's got the quality of someone
17:19that's had to graft frankly
17:25thank you everyone
17:27you've got so much emotion in here
17:29I know
17:29I think she's gorgeous as well
17:32she's really likeable
17:33we're amazing
17:34we are
17:36Liverpool should be buzzing for her
17:37I think she's like
17:38pride of place
17:39yeah
17:40that was incredible
17:41that was insane
17:43you're done Liverpool proud
17:46you really did
17:47thank you
17:52The Your Song stage is on Merseyside
17:54I'm so sorry about the weather
17:55you can come under my umbrella if you like
17:57to hear the people of Liverpool sing the songs that tell their incredible stories
18:02got another guy
18:03look already
18:05who's he
18:06my name's Will
18:07and I'm a lift engineer
18:08and it's got a lot of ups and downs
18:13and all the puns
18:14that was me little
18:15my little joke
18:17I hope he does love in an elevator
18:20my name's Will
18:21I'm going to be singing Yellow by Coldplay
18:24oh nice
18:25yellow
18:25being one of the lads growing up
18:27you know you don't really want to show your emotions
18:29and it's something I struggled with early on with music
18:31but obviously now as I'm standing here
18:34you can probably tell I don't care about any of that now
18:36so I hope you all enjoy the performance
18:39over the years I've always found myself going back to this song for inspiration
18:44it's quite an emotional song
18:46you know words and stuff that I usually wouldn't say
18:49but when I sing this song I can express myself
18:52look at the stars
18:55look how they shine for you
19:01in everything you do
19:04oh he's good isn't he
19:07and it was all yellow
19:09I can't even flip
19:10flipping into falsetto
19:11that technique's all through this song
19:13sun for you
19:15so you've got to be able to flip up into there all the time
19:18and all the things you do
19:20there he goes
19:20then back down
19:21class
19:23and it was called yellow
19:26growing up I was just like one of the lads playing footy every week
19:29boxing
19:30staying out late
19:31and drinking beer
19:33all those things that you know normal lads really from Liverpool do
19:36I came along
19:40I wrote a song for you
19:44I think he's making it his own you know
19:46the way that he's even holding the mic sort of looking down
19:49you can tell it's coming from a place of vulnerability
19:52and it was all yellow
19:54I was embarrassed to tell anybody about wanting to do singing and stuff like that
19:58because it's not seen as you know being masculine as it
20:01but I always sang in the shower when no one was home
20:04and just tried to hide it
20:06in everything you do
20:09but as I got older I got to the point where I realised
20:11and it was all yellow
20:14I don't care at the end of the day as long as I'm happy doing something that I love
20:18that's all that matters
20:32the first time that my family see me singing they were all shocked
20:36they couldn't believe it
20:37the last thing they would have thought about me is you know being a musician or singing
20:43oh
20:45look how they shine for you
20:49look how they shine for you
20:52look how they shine for you
21:06oh wow
21:08look how they shine for you
21:14thank you so much
21:15thank you
21:19so good
21:20oh my god
21:21I think I've fallen in love
21:23he says she's fallen in love
21:25he's got a beautiful voice though right
21:28well done
21:28it's great
21:29oh it's a wet one
21:30I bet that was a relief for him
21:32yeah
21:32music's his way of connecting
21:34did well there though
21:36That was so good.
21:41Bit wet in Liverpool.
21:44That's better.
21:45I was in a film once with Tom Waits and I said to him,
21:50you live in California and you're in the UK filming this,
21:53like, how do you feel about the weather?
21:55And he goes, I like it, so it's my moon.
22:01And I was like, it makes sense.
22:02All of his music sounds like he loads it in the rain in Liverpool.
22:09Next to perform is someone who prefers to look on the brighter side of life.
22:14It's not the exact weather that the song was written for,
22:18but there's still water around, so I suppose that's good.
22:22Hello, everybody.
22:26How are we? Good? Yeah, yeah, not too bad.
22:30Happy days.
22:32My name is Oli Wilson and I'm going to sing you a song today called Lily Pants.
22:39This is a song that I wrote a couple of years ago.
22:42Ah, first original in Liverpool.
22:46You like this song? Yes.
22:47Lovely to meet you.
22:48Lovely to meet you.
22:50When I wrote the song, it was summer, the sun was out, and I was feeling happy.
22:54You don't really appreciate something when you've got it good,
22:58so it's me saying to myself, pull yourself together, have a laugh,
23:03and don't take things so seriously.
23:04Go on, Oli. Give it to us.
23:06Here we go.
23:07I'm very excited about this one.
23:10Let go, my love, and laugh a while.
23:15Do the things that make you smile.
23:20Rest your head and take a breath.
23:24Time is for the wasting.
23:27Ooh.
23:27Oh, yeah.
23:28Nice chord.
23:29Knows what he's doing on the piano.
23:31Let your mind.
23:32I love it.
23:35Wonder free.
23:40Come explore the lillipads with me.
23:47I'm singing kaleidoscopic music.
23:49We'll float side by side down the stream.
23:55His voice isn't, like, remarkable, but it's just kind of uplifting.
24:00It's what you need on a rainy day, isn't it?
24:02Life is but a dream.
24:06A warm breeze will blow.
24:08I think the piano naturally wants to be sad,
24:12but I really wanted to write a happy song.
24:15As you lie floating on the lillipads with me, your little lady.
24:23Look at the crowd and everyone's waving their eyes.
24:25And I lie floating on the lillipads with you.
24:34Thank you, everybody.
24:41I like this dude a lot.
24:43He's effortlessly funny.
24:45People appreciate it here.
24:47There's, like, a tradition of cabaret in the UK.
24:50Oh, Ollie.
24:52This is so good.
24:54Always look on the bright side of life.
24:56It's that vibe.
24:57I feel like I want to get a lillipad.
24:59Yeah.
25:00I do.
25:01For me, it's a moment in time here, not a Hackney Empire thing.
25:05Yeah.
25:05But I'm so happy we've had this.
25:08Oh, we needed a bit of Ollie today.
25:13We could have done without the rain today.
25:15I know.
25:16I know.
25:16Could not be worse.
25:19It's getting worse.
25:21No, it's not.
25:21It's getting better sessions on in a minute.
25:23I'm just going to walk towards Gary with the camera, then.
25:25Around the side of the stage.
25:26Yeah.
25:27And then you're going into the tent.
25:28Lovely.
25:29Our next performer...
25:31Gorgeous.
25:31Gorgeous weather.
25:33..is facing more than just the weather.
25:35Oh, my goodness.
25:36Bag of nerves.
25:37There's the stage and then my home city.
25:40It's very nerve-wracking knowing people I know are going to be there.
25:43My daughter, my amazing partner.
25:47Must be doing there, Edson, just waiting, standing there.
25:50Here she is.
25:52I'm so nervous for her.
25:56Hi, Chantal.
25:57Hiya.
25:57You doing all right?
25:58Come in, come in.
25:59Well, welcome.
25:59So, today, how are you feeling about going out there,
26:03seeing all these strangers, the rain?
26:05This is hell.
26:07Oh, yeah.
26:07Oh, yeah, yeah.
26:08Oh, mate.
26:09Don't be nervous.
26:12I'm a born and bred Scouser.
26:13Growing up my whole life, singing was important to me.
26:16I'd sing at the top of my lungs.
26:18I had confidence.
26:19I had loads of it.
26:21I wanted to start to perform.
26:23I just didn't have much opportunity to do it.
26:28When I was 13, I noticed that I had swelling in my ankles.
26:33The doctors, they said,
26:34you need dialysis today or you'll die.
26:37So I was on dialysis for 11 years,
26:40and then I was told,
26:41if you don't get a transplant soon,
26:43you're not going to make it.
26:50The week later, the nurse got a call,
26:52and it's like, Chantal, you won't believe this.
26:54They've got your kidney.
26:56After the transplant, my life changed.
26:59It was free and beyond words.
27:01It has enabled me to travel and be with my family.
27:05But the main one,
27:06I wouldn't have been able to have my daughter, Rudy.
27:09What a joy.
27:12She's got a daughter!
27:14This is insane.
27:15This is actual fairy tales.
27:17A warm welcome to the lovely Chantal.
27:22I am nervous to perform, always.
27:25Let's go, Sharon!
27:26Go on, girl!
27:28But my gift, a kidney transplant,
27:31is the best thing that's ever happened to me.
27:33Hey, Liverpool.
27:35I'm going to sing
27:36The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me by Gladys Knight.
27:40It's perfect,
27:40because this is such a good song for your voice to shine on,
27:44if you can do it.
27:44But is she going to be nervous?
27:46Mmm.
27:47Oh, me nerves are gone.
27:49Oh, mate, me legs are like jelly!
27:56We're rooting for you.
28:01I've had my shame
28:05Mmm
28:06Of life's ups and downs
28:09Tone, I love the tone.
28:11Tone's there.
28:12But fate's been kind
28:16The downs have been few
28:21Oh, attitude.
28:23Downs.
28:24Sounds like an actual old record.
28:26Yeah, like it's rich.
28:27It's so classy, isn't it?
28:29Yeah.
28:29I've been lucky
28:31Talk about this voice all day, sick.
28:33I guess you could say
28:37That it's all because of me
28:39And I love the phrasing.
28:41Yeah.
28:42It's not completely on the...
28:43Like, she's free.
28:46Oh, that it had been times
28:49And the A's are really pronounced, yeah!
28:52When times were hard, like right now
28:54She's employing some pretty cool techniques here.
28:56But I always, somehow, I made it
29:01I made it through
29:04Oh, even the band, like, fires in these days
29:08Oh, yeah, every, every moment
29:11She is our kind of singer.
29:13Yeah.
29:13Don't you hear the wave?
29:15Yes!
29:16Oh, man!
29:17There was a moment
29:20That I spent
29:21Kelly
29:22I'm just loving you
29:29You can hear the desperation
29:30You can also hear, like, the relief
29:33Yeah, it is relief
29:37When I step on stage and sing
29:39I'm doing this with Madonna in mind
29:42How young he was
29:43And how he passed
29:45He's giving me a second chance at life
29:48Oh, you'll be there
29:50This song makes me feel free
29:53Imagine, like, a bird in a cage
29:55And then the door gets let open
29:57And the bird flies out
29:58Cause you're the best thing
30:02That ever happened to me
30:07Come on, let's go down
30:09This is absolute gold
30:10You're the best thing
30:13That ever happened to me
30:16That ever happened to me
30:18I know
30:20You're the best thing
30:22All that ever happened to me
30:42You're the best thing
30:43I know
30:44You're the best thing
30:46I know
30:46I know
30:46I know
30:46I know
30:47I know
30:47I know
30:47I know
30:48I know
30:48I know
30:49I know
30:49You're a legend
30:50I know
30:51I know
30:52I know
30:52If it was the 1960s, you'd be the biggest star in the world
30:56And your miracle baby
30:58Does she tell you you're a miracle?
31:01Yes.
31:02I think she does, you know.
31:04See you later, guys. Peace, yeah.
31:05It's OK. Bye.
31:06Bless you, ma'am.
31:09Mate, I am shaken.
31:10You know, I'm glad I've done it.
31:12I'm just so glad that I'm alive.
31:15To say to this little girl, just do it and soak it up.
31:18It doesn't matter what happens.
31:22It's been a rainy, dreary day.
31:25And then you come up with somebody like that.
31:28I am buzzing. I can't get a smile off my face.
31:31Could be crying.
31:32She's amazing.
31:33It's not about pitting people against each other,
31:35but, I mean, Chantelle's causing problems
31:37because her voice is that good.
31:38Thank you, Chantelle.
31:40Hi.
31:42When you're standing out there witnessing something like that,
31:45a bunch of strangers connecting, it's so cool.
31:47And then coming back up here,
31:49you getting a little blow-dry on the way,
31:51looking amazing. I'm like drowned rat.
31:59With the rain still falling...
32:01What's up, Liverpool? How we doing? You okay?
32:03Sam's taken to the stage.
32:05How sweet it is to be loved by you.
32:10Liverpool, you're like sugar, baby.
32:12To help warm up the soaked Liverpool crowd.
32:15Oh, my God, look at those!
32:17What? Is it for Andrew?
32:18Yeah!
32:19Yeah!
32:21Yeah!
32:21You brightened up all my days
32:24With the love so sweet
32:26In so many ways
32:28I wanna stop
32:29Thank you, baby
32:31I just gotta stop
32:34And thank you, baby
32:36Hey!
32:37Oh, that's a surprise!
32:39Lovely to meet you!
32:41Is it your fella? He's hot, isn't he?
32:43That was gorgeous!
32:48From one love story to another
32:52I'm Ali Horne
32:54I'm gonna be singing Northern Sky by Nick Drake
32:57For my gorgeous wife
32:59To tell her how much I love her
33:01Let's do all the cringe
33:03This was the song that we played
33:05While we were signing our certificate
33:07So it means the world to us
33:09So I hope you enjoy it!
33:13Bet you see him doing this all the time, don't you?
33:15Yeah!
33:16So nice!
33:17Doesn't get up!
33:18It's such a great song
33:19I connected instantly
33:21It's like meeting Laura for the first time
33:23It's love at first sight
33:23And you go
33:24God, where's this been all my life?
33:26We're in Liverpool
33:26That's what Paul McCartney said
33:27And every songwriter
33:28Is trying to tell the person that they love
33:30That they love them
33:31In a way that they haven't heard before
33:32Yeah
33:33So let's see how Ali gets on
33:34I never felt magic as crazy as this
33:39I never saw moons
33:41Knew the meaning of the sea
33:44Never held emotion
33:46In the palm of my hand
33:49Or felt sweet breezes
33:51I think he plays that guitar really well
33:54The music is running through this guy's spirit
33:57Brighten my northern sky
33:59Brighten my northern sky
34:01It's beautiful and simple
34:02And a really sweet declaration of love
34:06For you they see it for cops
34:08Come blow your horn on high
34:11The wife's not crying though
34:13Thank you very much
34:21Of course genre of love is always like a common denominator
34:26Yeah
34:27Like everyone sings about it
34:28It's such a universal feeling
34:30Love and loss pretty much
34:32With the power of love
34:38With the power of love
34:39A force from above
34:41Ooh
34:41Autratic
34:43My name is Rachel
34:45Growing up in Bootle
34:46And singing opera was quite unusual
34:55I'm going to dedicate this song to my dad
34:57Who passed away three months ago
35:00I think this song has helped me
35:02You know I'm now in a grieving process
35:05Being aware of the power of love
35:07Especially at the end of someone's life
35:10That's what you exchange
35:12That's all you can give each other
35:13Is love
35:14The power of love
35:19A force from above
35:21She's emotionally connected to her performance
35:23Yeah
35:24It's like mourning in the way she's delivering it
35:27Yeah
35:27The love always comes on fire
35:30Ah
35:32Ah
35:33Ah
35:36Yes
35:38Key change
35:39Key change
35:39Our first key change ever I think
35:40Ah
35:42Ah
35:43Even though this is a style of singing
35:45That I wouldn't necessarily gravitate towards
35:48She's making the song her own
35:50Yeah
35:53You're gone
35:58I reckon Frankie Goes to Hollywood would be absolutely shocked
36:02That someone's managed to get more drama into the most dramatic song that's ever been written
36:06I wanna see the sun shine into the rain
36:09The clouds have parted in Liverpool
36:12The sun's come out
36:13Thank God
36:14And the sun's arrival
36:16Oh it's a good crowd
36:18Yes
36:18Amazing
36:19Has brought with it an even bigger audience
36:24Hello everyone
36:25You alright? How you doing?
36:27You're so pretty aren't you?
36:28Look at you
36:28You glamming up for me?
36:30Yeah of course I am
36:32I'm not being funny but Liverpoolians, they know how to dress, don't they?
36:35This is how they turn up in Liverpool
36:38The only four
36:39Here's a hug, let's do this
36:41Mwah, love you
36:42Bye, love you
36:43But for Liverpool's final act
36:44She's got swag
36:46Yeah
36:46Wicked outfit
36:48There's more to her style than meets the eye
36:50So I'm wearing this dress that my mum always said that she likes me in
36:53And I'm wearing my mum's locker and mum's earrings as well
36:56So yeah, I've got her with me
36:58She's got a camo memo too
37:01Hi Renee, how you doing?
37:03I'm good
37:03Lovely to meet you
37:04You look beautiful
37:05Thank you
37:06Have you ever done anything like this before?
37:08No, not at all
37:08And this song is like so personal to me because it was great for me mum
37:13So this is a song that you've actually written?
37:15Yeah
37:15Oh wonderful, what's it called?
37:17Life's a Bitch
37:18It is isn't it?
37:22I love the title
37:24Me mum, she always used to say life's a bitch and then you die
37:27So I thought I'd turn it into a song
37:31It was me, my mum and my sister growing up
37:33We called ourselves the Three Musketeers
37:36All three of us
37:37We'd go like to the Lake District or we'd go to Wales
37:39Or we went to Amsterdam for the first time
37:42I'll forever miss my mum, do you know what I mean?
37:43She was honestly one of the best people
37:45And I'm not just saying that because she was my mum
37:48She was
37:49Now that my mum's gone, you know, I can feel the emptiness in the house
37:52And this song came from that grief
37:55It's so hard to lose a parent when you're that young
37:58You're just getting into the age where your parents become your friends as well
38:03Stand on the bottom step, there we go
38:06When I was writing the song I was in, you know, the lowest moments of my life
38:10So I do feel a little bit vulnerable
38:12Please welcome, Remay
38:16This is the first time that I've ever sung such a personal song in public
38:20So yeah
38:24Thank you
38:25Nice to meet you
38:28So my name's Remay and I'm going to be singing an original song today
38:31We lost me mum last year
38:33So this song is dedicated to her and the love and the humour that she brought to my life
38:40I think it had been about a week after my mum had passed away
38:43And I was in the house on my own
38:44And I was just crying my eyes out
38:45And then there was a guitar next to me
38:47Which my mum got me when I was like 11
38:49And I just picked the guitar up
38:51And it started just playing a little riff
38:53And these were the words that came out
38:55We were all born
38:59To feel it
39:02Everything I want
39:05For no reason
39:08And it can all change
39:11With the seasons
39:13But don't go drowning in your thoughts
39:17Just take a second and breathe in
39:22Don't be afraid of the darkness
39:28You'll see the light
39:29I love her voice
39:31Like it's really, really young and modern
39:34There's a naivety to that style of singing
39:36It's really intimate
39:38Totally
39:38Oh, I need
39:44Myself
39:46And I
39:47Yeah, it's hitting Alison too, huh?
39:52Mmm
39:52We were all born
39:56To know it
39:58Our inevitable end
40:01Is the only thing that's honest
40:06And I'm not afraid of the darkness
40:11I see my mother's light
40:15Aw, beautiful
40:17This is my mother
40:21My mum was my biggest fan
40:23She'd be at the front now cheering me on
40:25And I know she'll be with me there
40:26Whether it's through the sun or a bird flying past
40:29My mum would be there with me
40:31Life's a bitch and then we'll die
40:34But with a little bit of love
40:37We'll be alright
40:40My mum's motto, life's a bitch and then you die
40:42Like it's accepting the inevitable
40:45But being at peace with it
40:47And enjoying the life that we have now
40:51Me
40:54Myself
40:57And you
41:00We'll get through
41:02Thank you
41:04Thank you
41:05Thank you
41:09Aw, that was so nice
41:12That's so beautiful
41:14She's sort of magic, isn't she?
41:16Oh, God
41:18Well done, babe, well done
41:19You can't have it not be a contender
41:22Because it's doing everything that we're asking
41:24Your mum will be so proud
41:26Thank you
41:26She's gone and created this song
41:28To talk about a moment in her life that's still pure and raw
41:31Thank you
41:32So lovely
41:33Got everything going for her
41:42All of today's performers are back on the Your Song stage
41:46There's an amazing amount of talent here
41:48It's not going to be easy
41:49Waiting to find out who Paloma and Sam have chosen to perform
41:53At the Hackney Empire Grand Final
41:55I have absolutely loved Liverpool
41:59The buzz, the atmosphere, the people
42:01It's been incredible
42:03I've had the best time
42:04Such a great crowd
42:05People will come out, rain or shine
42:07Let's talk about some of our singers today
42:09Who stuck with you the most?
42:12I feel like I was the most emotional
42:14And the most moved
42:16By Elliot
42:17That was lovely
42:23And you could feel the audience as well with him
42:25Yeah, he made people just want him straight away
42:27And it's funny
42:28Because some of these performances
42:30We're completely blown away by the voice
42:33With a little bit of love
42:35Will be alright
42:38Like Remy
42:39Because it was so unique
42:41And then Chantelle
42:42Oh yeah
42:43Oh yeah
42:44Every, every moment
42:46Amazing voice
42:48You can hear it in her
42:49She's just flying now
42:50Georgia
42:51I wouldn't say that her voice blew me away
42:54But the way she used her voice added so much more to her story
43:04I loved how she was singing with so much authenticity
43:08Gave us all goosebumps
43:09Listen, I'm so excited
43:11I'm glad I haven't got your job
43:13Because you've got to now choose one person
43:15To go through to the grand final
43:19You don't even know
43:20We're trying to figure that out actually
43:22This is our first go
43:23We're still trying to work it out
43:24I'm going to leave you to it
43:25Because you've got a lot to discuss
43:31You know, does anyone's heart have started beating quite fast?
43:36Hi guys
43:37Hi
43:37Hi
43:38Liverpool, you have been absolutely incredible
43:42I've loved every minute
43:43Thank you so much for finding the courage
43:45To share your stories with us
43:47We really appreciate it
43:48And as you know
43:49You weren't just singing for the Liverpool crowds
43:52We have two incredible pop stars backstage
43:55Some of you have met them
43:57Please welcome Paloma Faith
43:59And Sam Ryder
44:02Hi guys
44:05Hi
44:06You all blew us away
44:08It was a testament to Liverpool
44:10We already had high expectations
44:12And you guys really delivered
44:14You've all been incredible
44:15A credit to yourselves, a credit to your city
44:16But there's only space for one person from Liverpool
44:20To sing at the Hackney Empire
44:23So, class of Liverpool
44:25The singer we have chosen
44:30Is
44:33Chantelle
44:37Thanks so much for Chantelle
44:39Thank you
44:40Well done
44:41Wow
44:43Wow
44:44I can't believe it
44:45I can't believe it
44:48I can't believe it
44:49I can't believe it
44:50I can't believe it
44:51I can't believe it
