Oak Flats resident Kandice Byrnes talks about the fire that destroyed her home and the importance of the smoke alarms that woke her up in the early hours of the morning.
Transcript
00:00So last Saturday morning I was asleep, it was about 4.30 in the morning and I was woken up
00:05to the smoke alarms, obviously a bit delirious at the time, but as I walked downstairs I could see that
00:12smoke was coming out of my garage and that enabled me to be able to get outside and once I
00:18got outside into my garage on the side of the house, I could see that the entire garage was already
00:23engulfed.
00:25As the fire brigade actually said how fortunate it was that we had wireless smoke alarms but because the smoke
00:33alarms downstairs went off it actually at the same time enabled the upstairs ones to go off and that's what
00:38actually woke me up and enabled me to get out of the house safely in that morning and in time.
