01:07Well, here we go in Boston.
01:09Game one between the Sixers and the Celtics, a 2-7 matchup in the East.
01:14And what history between these franchises, they are meeting for a 23rd time in the playoffs.
01:21Boston leading 15-7.
01:24Their first meeting back in 1953 when the Sixers were the Syracuse Nationals.
01:29Celtics have won the last six meetings.
01:32Philadelphia's last win.
01:33And you've got to go back to 1982 to further set the table for today.
01:39Let's send things down on the floor to George Sedano.

01:43As we know, the Celtics were champions just two seasons ago.
01:46Last year, their season cut short by the Knicks and Jason Tatum's Achilles injury.
01:50I asked Joe Mazzullo, their head coach, what he learned from those journeys.
01:54He actually referenced the championship journey.
01:57And he said, very simply to me, I can control what I can control.
02:01He's very much at peace and at ease with that situation.
02:05Here's the reality of it.
02:06He said that during that championship run, after the fact, he watched back all those games.
02:11And he wrote down 20 different instances where the outcome could have changed
02:14and would have derailed their championship hopes.
02:16So he knows that how that applies today is very simple.
02:19Control what you actually can control, which is rebounding, defense, and controlling the free throw line, Ryan.

02:27Take a look at today's starting lineups.

02:35Tyrese Maxey, the impressive rookie, Vijay Edgecombe, Kelly Oubre Jr., Paul George, and Adem Bona,
02:41who had a huge playing game against Orlando.
02:44And for Boston, Derek White, Jalen Brown, Sam Houser, Jason Tatum, and Nabi Ishkata,
02:52who had a terrific season in a starting role for Boston.
02:59So Kata and Bona will jump it up first of two games on ABC today with the Thunder and Suns

03:12We are ready on a Sunday afternoon in Boston.
03:17The Celtics and the Sixers, Scott Foster, will toss it up.
03:24And game one is underway as Philadelphia wins the tip.
03:30Eric White starting on Tyrese Maxey, but Maxey's going to see a lot of different defenders that have size and
03:36length to try to bother him.
03:38George unable to hit on that three.
03:40Nick Nurse wants Paul George to be aggressive on the offensive end, wants to see 15-20 field goal attempts.
03:46This is Kata, can't finish, but gets a whistle.
03:50And Nami Ishkata will shoot two.
03:53Boston is so good with Kata setting ball screens out top.
03:58You have to pay attention to the handler, and then he is really good at rolling to the rim.
04:03And one of the reasons he's such a good offensive rebounder are those matchups.
04:07He had a career-high 27 points, 17 rebounds March 1st against Philadelphia.
04:13These teams met three times in the season's first three weeks, and then not again until March 1st.
04:21Jason Tatum did not play in any of those four meetings.
04:24Paul George did not play in any of those four meetings.
04:29They split the regular season, two games apiece.

05:22could get, especially Houser.
05:23Make him put it on the deck because he gets the majority of his threes are catch-and-shoot.

06:27And that's the difficulty with Andre Drummond.
06:30He's going to get out on those high ball screens if he's not playing drop coverage where he can be
06:34attacked.
06:35That means that Gata is going to have an easy run-up to the basket.
06:39George tosses it in plus the foul.
06:42And a chance for three for Paul George.
06:47Paul George I thought was very good against Orlando in that play-in game.
06:52At 16 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
06:56And thought his defense in the time he was guarding Paolo Bancaro was excellent.
07:01He gets his hand on so many basketballs with so many deflections and steals.
07:06Missed 25 games because of the suspension due to the anti-drug policy.
07:13But has come back and played really well.
07:15Final 10 games averaged 21 points per.
07:18Dick Nurse all season long has been delighted with the way George has defended.
07:23And the consistency of that as Edgecombe comes up with a steal, but then gave it right back.
07:28Great read to pick that ball off.

09:31Well, Joe Mazzula talks all the time to his team and the organization about don't get beat on tendencies.
09:38So there are certain things that you're willing to live with, with a player like Tyrese Maxey,
09:43but certain things you want to be sure that you play to his tendencies and try to take away.
09:49Said they need more of his scoring coming in the half court and at the line in his transition.
09:55He'll feel good about things.

10:03So concerned about that shot initially and the little shot fake gets the defender off the floor and it's an

10:17Rebounding is going to be such a big factor in this game, especially for Philly,
10:21trying to keep Austin off the offensive glass, especially for those corner crashes they have.
10:26Here is Brown, Brown bodying in on Edgecombe, couldn't finish, gets the whistle.
10:32It'll stay here with Boston and the loose ball foul is called on Drummond.
10:40After Vucevic sets this screen and rolls, it's almost the shake action where they throw to Sam Hauser

14:45Against Orlando, they use Kelly Oubre as a screener quite a bit to try to get him open on the

14:56Nikola Vujovic, who was the deadline acquisition for the Celtics,
15:01then missed a month because of a fractured ring finger.
15:04came back, played four games at the end of the regular season, and, yeah,
15:09it's going to be an illegal screen there.
15:12It's basically they called that a trip.
15:14You've got to stay shoulder-width, but it's more the fact that he stuck that leg out of a triple
15:19break.
15:20George gets fouled on the floor by Brown.
15:27You talk about, Jay, how difficult it has looked at times for Philadelphia to get open shots in this first
15:35quarter.
15:36This is a Celtics team that had the number one defense in the NBA from February 1st on.
15:42Well, they can switch at multiple spots, but what they really do well is they move.
15:47They're on the move while the ball's in the air.
15:49So their defensive positioning is outstanding.
15:53You're seeing nothing but white shirts and bodies on every drive.
15:58They call that foul on Andre Drummond, and it's his second.
16:02I thought they were going to give it to Paul George as he just shoved Jalen Brown.
16:09But it'll be on Drummond, and all seven fouls in this game, except for Brown's one, have gone against centers.
16:20Checking to see if this foul meets the criteria for a flagrant foul.
16:24Two on Bona, two on Drummond, and they will check to see if this should get upgraded.
16:29We'll see whether or not anything was unnecessary on the contact here.
16:35So Brown and George get tangled up, and then, oh, it was Drummond who gave that knock to Brown.
16:45Clearly Drummond, not George.
16:46It was definitely a forearm shiver.

16:49George gave a little shove, and then Drummond gave the forearm,
16:53which we'll see whether or not they deem that contact unnecessary.
16:58If so, it'll be upgraded to a flagrant foul penalty one.

17:14After a review, it's been determined there was nothing unnecessary about the contact below the shoulder.

17:19All right, so just a common foul, but you have two on Bona, you have two on Drummond in a
17:25game where you don't have Joel Embiid.
17:28And the first thing that Nick Nurse mentioned to us, Jay, when talking about concerns going up against Boston was
17:35the rebounding battle.
17:36And now all of a sudden, Philly gets smaller.
17:39Dominic Barlow having to come into the game.
17:43So now they are much less weight out on the floor without Andre Drummond or a Dembona and a size
17:51disadvantage.
17:54Barlow, Grimes, Maxie, George, and Oubre.
17:57So, yeah, the 6'9", Barlow, essentially your center in this lineup.

26:14I don't know what the record is for coming back from an Achilles injury, but, you know, the thought was
26:21he's going to be out the whole year.
26:22And he was 298 days from getting injured against New York in game four last year to playing about 16,
26:3217 games ago.
26:33Just absolutely remarkable.
26:34And to play at this level, it's just hard to believe.
26:39Talks about how just attacking his rehab and coming back feeling healthy felt like such a win
26:46that now actually getting to playoff basketball truly feels like icing on the cake for him.

31:16But Philly's not necessarily positioned to take advantage of that

43:47mopey a little woe is knee when it came to that scenario and this year he kind of took the

43:51by the horns whatever they were dealing with he made sure to get with guys and make sure that they

44:00season great stuff George and that was part of the ship for Philadelphia in general right
44:05everything centered around Maxey this year rather than trying to rely on Embiid in the same way as they
44:11had in the past as Keita just picked up his third and we'll check out for Boston Vucevic who has
