00:55You
01:32Bye, Mama.
01:36You have a nice time at school today, Ms. Becky.
01:39Thanks, Lucy. Bye.
01:46I can't play with you now, Caesar. Gotta go to school.
02:06Good morning, Becky. Good morning, Sally.
02:13Good morning, Becky. Are you waiting for somebody?
02:17I was waiting for Tom. Do you know if he and Ben have come back yet?
02:21I don't think so. At least I haven't seen them.
02:23I guess they're all right, though, knowing Tom.
02:25I suppose so.
02:27Huh? Why, Jeff Thatcher, they're your friends. Don't you care about them at all?
02:31Well, sure I do. But Tom will take care of himself, like you said.
02:36You don't have to worry about Tom, Becky. Let me walk you to school.
02:40Thanks, but you go on by yourself.
02:42Um, all right.
02:46Maybe Tom wanted to surprise you by meeting you at school.
02:48He'll probably be waiting for you there right now.
02:51Sure, that's probably where he is. Want to go see?
02:55Thanks, Jeff.
02:57Guess I'll see you later, then.
03:07Tom?
03:10Hmm.
03:17Oh, Tom, wherever you are, I hope you're all right.
03:25No man draws a sword on Captain Tom, the Black Avenger of the Spanish Mane, and lives to tell about
03:31it.
03:32Oh, they don't call me the Terror of the Seven Seas for nothing.
03:36Yield or I'll cut you into pieces.
03:42Yield to me and I'll spare your life.
03:45Arr, Captain Rogers yields to no man.
03:47Arr.
03:52And now I'll send you straight to the bottom.
03:56Arr!
04:02I gotta admit, Tom, you can die better than anybody except me.
04:07Come on, Terror of the Seven Seas, help me out, will ya?
04:10You couldn't die as good as me if your life depended on it.
04:14I betcha I can die just as good as you any day of the week.
04:18Morning, you two.
04:20Fresh fish for breakfast.
04:22Sounds real good, Huck.
04:24How about eating breakfast now and fighting after?
04:26Yeah, right.
04:36They'll be done in a bit. They sure do smell good.
04:39Guess it'd be Thursday by now.
04:42Guess it is, so what?
04:43I was thinking about the weekend.
04:45Well, it's nothing special, I guess, when you're playing hooky every day.
04:49Yeah, I suppose you're right, Ben.
04:51You have often heard me say punctuality is a virtue,
04:54and in my ten years as schoolmaster, I have never been late till now,
04:58which should indicate the gravity of the situation which has caused my tardiness.
05:02Tom Sawyer and Ben Rogers are missing.
05:05They were last seen in the company of Huckleberry Finn.
05:08The last time anyone saw them, they were playing on a raft
05:11which was found shattered to bits after yesterday's storm.
05:14I was told by the sheriff this morning that they have all met their end in the river for drowning.
05:23Oh, they're drowning.
05:25Oh, dear.
05:29But, sir, Tom, Ben and Huck are the best swimmers of all the boys in St. Pete.
05:33They couldn't have drowned.
05:35Do you recall the violence of yesterday's storm?
05:38Now imagine being caught in the middle of the Mississippi River
05:41when the wind and the water were at their highest fury.
05:44Just think of it.
05:46No one could have survived that.
05:48As difficult as it may be,
05:50we must accept the fact that those three boys are gone.
05:57It ain't so.
05:58It can't be.
06:02No.
06:03Oh, not Tom.
06:04Please, not Tom.
06:05I'm so sorry.
06:06I'm so sorry.
06:08I'm so sorry.
06:14Ready?
06:15Here I come.
06:18I'm coming, Huck.
06:20Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
06:24Made it.
06:26Ready?
06:27Here I go.
06:30Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
06:32Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
06:34Hey, uh-oh.
06:37Hold on.
06:38Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
06:43Oh!
07:07Ben! He's out! Cold!
07:10Wake up, Ben. Come on.
07:13Uh-oh.
07:14Maybe we should douse him with water.
07:16Good idea. You're right.
07:17Only, uh, what do we carry it in, Huck?
07:20Why don't we use our hats?
07:21Right. Let's go.
07:23Wait a minute. I'll go with you.
07:25Huh?
07:26I can make it down to the river even though I am feeling kind of strange.
07:32Like maybe my head's got a big crack in it.
07:34Oh, the pain won't stop.
07:41He was faking it the whole time.
07:43Yeah.
07:46Ben Rogers, you low-down skunk. I'm going to get you for this.
07:50That way, Tom. Get him good.
07:54That's the dirtiest trip I ever did see.
07:59Hold on a second, you two. Did you hear that?
08:02Huh? What do you mean, Huck?
08:04A big old rumble like thunder.
08:06Guess there could be another storm on the way.
08:10That ain't thunder.
08:11It's gotta be. That storm we had yesterday hasn't quite played itself out yet.
08:16Ain't like no thunder I ever heard.
08:18What direction's it coming from?
08:21I don't know.
08:32A river sounds like...
08:33Let's go out to the lookout for him.
08:35Come on.
08:35Yeah.
09:00They're firing the ferry boat cannon.
09:02Why on earth did they do that?
09:04Somebody drowned and now they're looking for him.
09:06For some reason, when you fire a cannon over the water near where the person went down, their body's supposed
09:11to come to the top.
09:12Well, that's a mighty strange way of looking for a body if you ask me, Tom.
09:16Only one other way. With bread and mercury.
09:19You take a loaf of bread and you fill it with mercury and the body will rise up to it.
09:23Now, why would it do that?
09:25Just one of the mysteries of life, I reckon.
09:27I reckon.
09:29I wish I was riding that ferry boat right now.
09:32Looks like there's a whole bunch of folks on board.
09:35It sure would be exciting to be there when the body rises up.
09:42Why not go down and take a closer look?
09:44Just remember, we can't let nobody see us.
09:47We'll be hiding in the bushes.
09:48Come on, let's get down there.
09:50Hurry up.
09:50Yes, hurray.
10:01This is the spot where Bill Turner showed up a year ago, so keep a sharp eye out, everybody.
10:16Here she comes.
10:18Everybody stay down and don't let them see you.
10:34If they'd have loaded that cannon with a real ball, we'd have been goners.
10:39Awful lot of folks on board.
10:41Could you see who any of them were?
10:42Just look like a bunch of ants from this far away.
10:47I wonder who it was they was a-searching for.
10:54They're still looking.
10:55You'd have thought they'd given up by now.
10:58Sure would like to know who it was.
11:00Somebody important from the look of it.
11:03I know who they're looking for.
11:05It has to be.
11:06What has to be what, Tom?
11:08Just think about it.
11:10Can't you guess who they're searching for, Ben?
11:12How would I know?
11:14It's us.
11:15Huh?
11:16Us?
11:17Mm-hmm.
11:17We drowned in yesterday's storm.
11:19Either I've gone crazy or you have, Tom.
11:22We all know we didn't drown, but they think we did, see?
11:25While we were swimming?
11:26Huh?
11:27Yeah, that must be it.
11:29They'll never find us.
11:31Unless we want them to.
11:32They can search till doomsday for all the good it'll do them.
11:35But when we show up again, think about what'll happen then.
11:38Just think, Ben, we're going to be heroes.
11:41The biggest heroes that St. Pete's ever had in its whole entire history.
11:44Everyone in town's going to be talking about us.
11:47Yeah, then they'll throw a big celebration.
11:49The three of us will be as famous as President Grant.
11:55Hooray!
12:13Getting late, about time to turn in.
12:16Want to use the tent or sleep outside?
12:18It's warm enough and there ain't any sign of rain.
12:21It'll be a lot nicer outside.
12:23Mm-hmm. Reckon you're right, Hook.
12:28Oh, my God.
12:35I know who some of the folks on the ferry boat was today.
12:39Who?
12:39My dad was there anyway. I'm sure it was him.
12:42I bet he's plenty worried about Ma not showing up for so long, you know what I mean?
12:46Suppose so.
12:49I'll bet your aunt probably feels exactly the same way, Tom.
12:53Hmm. Reckon so?
12:56Yep. Probably worried sick about you.
12:59Hmm. Well, I don't care how worried she is.
13:01Now, I don't want to hear no more about it, you understand?
13:04Sure. Nothing to get upset about.
13:08Then again, I'm downright curious what they're saying about us back in town, and I bet you are, too.
13:14Huh? Yeah, well, so what if I am?
13:17Aha! We'll never find out if we don't go back.
13:22So, you're a coward. You just want to give up and go home.
13:25Mm-mm. It's not that at all, Tom. It's only...
13:29Go on.
13:29I'm just wondering how my father's doing, just like you're thinking about your Aunt Polly.
13:34You're thinking about her, aren't you?
13:36Yep.
13:37How about you, Huckleberry?
13:39Huh? How about what?
13:41Wouldn't it be fine if we could go back to St. Pete and hear what they're saying about us?
13:45Well, for you, maybe.
13:48But folks here about to ain't never had nothing good to say about me, so if they think I'm gone,
13:52the only thing they're gonna say is good riddance to bad rubbish.
13:55That ain't so. Ain't so at all. Just ask Tom.
13:58Huh?
13:59Oh, huh, you're right, Ben.
14:01Um, listen, Ben.
14:03If I went to town just to hear what people were saying and then came right back, would that be
14:07okay with you?
14:10You mean desert the island?
14:12Huh?
14:13No, of course not. I'll be back before breakfast, but then we'll know what everybody in town is saying.
14:18What?
14:19All right, I'll go with you.
14:20Heck, I'll go, too.
14:21Well, if all three of us go, there's a chance we might get caught, and then we'd never make it
14:26back.
14:27Hmm. Yeah, you're right.
14:29Hmm.
14:30Well, then, according to our oath, I'm the leader of this pirate gang, and I've decided I'm going in alone.
14:36Well, it sounds all right to me, except for one thing.
14:39What?
14:40How you get across the river. Our raft drifted off in the storm.
14:43I'm gonna swim.
14:55See you in the morning, Tom. You take care of yourself now.
14:58I will.
15:00Best of luck, Tom. See you at breakfast.
15:02Thanks, Ben. So long.
15:08Since the Missouri shore is too far from Jackson Island for even a good swimmer like me,
15:12my plan's to head for the Illinois side of the river only a couple of hundred yards away.
15:17Once I get there, I can head upstream to where the ferries dock.
15:21Then, once the ferry's on its way and nobody's watching,
15:23I can sneak aboard the lifeboat that they got tied to the back of the ferryboat,
15:27and nobody'll be the wiser.
15:54That river's awful wide, all right.
15:57But one thing's for sure, I ain't about to try to swim that far against the current,
16:01but the last ferry will be casting off any minute.
16:26What are we waiting so long for? Let's get a move on.
16:29Mr. Goodley said he might be a couple of minutes late.
16:31I promised him we'd wait till he got here.
16:33Well, if he ain't here soon, we'll go without him.
16:35Here he comes now.
16:38Sorry, I'm late. Thanks for waiting.
16:40You just made it, Mr. Goodley.
16:41All right, prepare to cast off.
16:43Jed, give me a hand with the gangplank, will you?
16:45Line's a clear, Skipper.
16:49Line is secured, Skipper.
17:16Line's a clear, Skipper.
17:44I'll see what's going on at Ben's house first.
18:00Looks like nobody's home.
18:07Don't see nobody around.
18:09The plan's working perfect so far.
18:14I'm sorry, Miss Polly.
18:15The search parties couldn't find a trace.
18:20Now.
18:21Brings me no joy to say it, but there's no getting away from the fact that...
18:24You're wrong.
18:25Tom's all right, I tell you.
18:26If any harm would be falling that boy, I'd know it.
18:29You wait, he'll walk through that door, and he'll be just fine.
18:32I got no doubt the same's true for Ben, Sheriff.
18:34They might have drifted downstream to Clarksville, or even as far as Ellsbury.
18:38Not likely.
18:39You see, we've already...
18:40Of course, that would explain everything.
18:42No wonder we couldn't find them.
18:44Now, look, folks, I hope those boys are all right just as much as you do, believe me.
18:49But we've been in touch with every town south of us, and no one's seen them.
18:53What's our next step?
18:54A few towns haven't reported back yet.
18:56We can only wait and hope for the best.
18:57And if they don't turn up, what then?
19:00I've given orders for the search parties to keep dragging the river till Saturday night, and then...
19:05I guess you better talk to the reverend.
19:08I imagine you want to make some kind of arrangement for a memorial service.
19:12Nothing else to do, I suppose.
19:14Oh, Saturday's just a few days from now.
19:17What else can we do, Mary?
19:29Those poor boys.
19:30Now, look, there's no proof that anything's happened to them.
19:34There's still hope.
19:36Well, folks, I best be on my way.
19:39I'll go with you, Sheriff.
19:42Good night, Mary.
19:44Night, Sheriff.
19:45See you in the morning.
19:54It's quite late, Mother, and you scarcely slept last night or the night before.
19:57Try and get some rest, won't you?
20:00I'm afraid until I know for certain what's happened to Tom, I won't be able to rest, Mary.
20:05He was the best-hearted boy I've ever known, and he never meant any harm to anyone.
20:09No more responsible than a colt, but he was a good boy full of kindness.
20:14No doubt about that, Mother.
20:15But, you know, he never would have got caught in that storm if he'd been to school like he was
20:19supposed to.
20:20Hush, Sid.
20:21Mary, you and Sid go on up to bed.
20:24I'll sit a while.
20:26Good night, Mother.
20:27Night, Aunt Polly.
20:30Mary, you think Aunt Polly meant all those things she said about Tom?
20:33Of course she did, Sid.
20:35Why, your brother is one of the finest boys I've ever known.
20:38I believe we'll all be proud of him someday, don't you?
20:41Well, um...
20:42Good night, Sid.
20:43Good night, Mary.
20:52The Lord giveth, and the Lord taketh away, but please don't take my Tom.
20:57Take me in his place, I don't mind.
20:59I've led a full life and a good one, but Tom, my Tom, he's just a child.
21:20I'm sorry, Aunt Polly.
21:31Just like I figured nobody was minding the ferryboat so late, so it was no problem taking the lifeboat.
21:37My plan's working fine, except for one thing.
21:40I didn't expect to feel so bad about Aunt Polly.
21:43Only thing kept me from telling her I'm okay is I promised Ben and Huck not to.
21:48But seeing her crying her eyes out over me, it like to broke my heart.
21:52She can be awful vexing with her scolding and fussing over me all the time.
21:57But I suppose I care more about Aunt Polly than just about anyone else in the world.
22:06Huh?
22:12Golly, it's morning already.
22:13Hey, Huck, wake up.
22:15What?
22:15Oh, let me alone, Ben.
22:17I'll wake up when I have a mind, too.
22:19Tom ain't back yet, and it's almost dawn.
22:21He'll be back soon enough.
22:23It's almost sunrise.
22:24He ought to be here by now.
22:26He'll be here sooner or later.
22:28Don't worry.
22:30Maybe he won't ever come back, you thought of that?
22:33Now, I'm not saying it'll happen for sure, but it might.
22:36You know what your trouble is, Ben.
22:38You worry too much.
22:40Hey!
22:41You see there, Ben?
22:43Now, what'd I tell you?
22:45Sure enough.
22:46Welcome back, Tom.
22:48My clothes are still wet from swimming.
22:50I'll get some wood and build up the fire.
22:53Thanks.
22:57I should have known you'd come back.
22:59That's all right, Ben.
23:00I reckon I would have felt the same way.
23:01So, is everyone talking about us?
23:03Yep, I caught quite an earful, all right.
23:05I'll tell you all about it once I get dried off.
23:09Sure, Tom.
23:14Huck and Ben will be grinning like monkeys when I tell them about it.
23:18But the best part will be when I tell them my plan for us all going home again.
23:23It's a humdinger.
23:24And it's guaranteed to make us more famous than anybody in St. Pete.
23:28Maybe the whole state of Missouri.
23:30Or even, maybe the entire United States of America.
23:35Hey, sun's coming up.
23:37Gonna be a beautiful morning, I reckon.
23:40Yeah, a real humdinger.
24:02I'll tell you all about it.
