00:00Sir, are you distracted by your shorts, sir?
00:02No, it's me.
00:06A vice chancellor says women wearing shorts invite sexual harassment.
00:10And right after that, to protest it, students show up wearing exactly that.
00:14At Tamil Nadu National Law University, during a routine meeting on April 15th,
00:18Vice Chancellor Veen Agaraj allegedly said,
00:21girls wearing shorts are distraction to students and even faculty members.
00:25And worse, that they invite sexual harassment.
00:27That was enough for students to take a stand.
00:29Placards went up across campus, reading, blame the mindset, not clothes.
00:33First, they put up posters condemning the statement.
00:36Posters were removed, so they put them up again.
00:38Then came the protest.
00:39Outside the administrative block, students gathered, raising slogans,
00:43VC sir, we need an apology.
00:45VC sir, VC sir, come, come, come, come.
00:49And then came the most powerful vision.
00:51Students turned up in shorts, not just women, everyone.
00:54Because they said, problem is not what someone wears.
00:57Students of National Law University, Jodhpur, have also expressed solidarity with these students.
01:02The Vice Chancellor, however, has refused to apologize.
01:05He says he was only sharing his opinion on what's presentable.
01:08In my personal opinion, if you want to improve the image of the institution,
01:15I think presentable dress may be one factor.
01:19I am not here to ask the answer to the questions.
01:23This isn't the first time.
01:24Back in 2016, at National Law School of India University,
01:27V Nagaraj had made similar remarks.
01:29He reportedly told a student,
01:30You can come to class without a dress also.
01:33That is how your character is.
01:34Students responded the same way.
01:36They wore shorts to class.
01:37He is also reported to have made remarks about marriage.
01:40To justify Dekaram saying,
01:41We all know why parents marry their children off,
01:44so that they can have sex.
01:45Just because the parents marry their children off for this reason,
01:48it does not mean that the children have sex in front of their parents.
01:51Students say this is not an isolated remark,
01:53but part of a pattern.
01:55Without understanding what was said yesterday,
01:58you called the dress, you called the dress,
02:01you mourning itself for a scaldi.
02:03I said I have nothing to speak.
02:05Whatever has happened, I don't want to speak again.
