00:03back in october 2021 nasa launched the lucy probe its mission investigate the asteroids
00:10that follow jupiter and now 18 months later study 11 of those orbiting space rocks called the trojan
00:16asteroids they are the group of asteroids that orbit the sun along the same path as jupiter and
00:20so far astronomers have identified some 9 800 asteroids they say are part of that group they
00:26held along this orbit due to the gravitational equilibrium created by the sun and jupiter
00:31also referred to as a lagrangian point these are the four asteroids the lucy probe has already
00:36glimpsed nasa scientists are hoping that getting a closer look at these asteroids will tell us more
00:40about the formation of our solar system however even though the probe is already close enough to
00:45see a couple of the asteroids it won't be investigating those just yet these preliminary
00:49images were captured from a distance of 330 million miles with the lucy probe not arriving at those
00:54particular asteroids until 2027 however it will reach its first asteroid target in november this year
