00:00Burglaries are on the rise in your neighborhood, and you have concerns about whether your house might be vulnerable.
00:07You have no surveillance system, so tonight you're placing some foil over the front door handle before you go to
00:14bed.
00:16This will help identify if someone sneakily tries to enter while you sleep.
00:22You wake up the next morning, and it appears the foil is slightly ripped.
00:26Someone has been here, and they're sure to return.
00:31Another option is to put a mug on the doorknob.
00:34When the knob turns, the mug will fall, causing a noise to wake you up and hopefully deter the intruder.
00:43Your main concern is that a tradesman stopped by recently.
00:46He said that he was working next door and asked to use your toilet.
00:52You refused, and felt bad at the time for being rude, but it was a very smart move.
00:58About 60% of burglaries in the USA are made by someone you know or have met before.
01:06That tradesman, while going to the bathroom, could have adjusted something in your house to make their return entry a
01:12little easier.
01:13They may have wanted to take a closer look at what security system is installed,
01:17check the structural integrity of your home, and found out what valuable loot you might have.
01:24Finally, today you're going on vacation.
01:27You need to prepare your house and make it as safe as possible.
01:32A full post box is the first thing a robber will look for in a target.
01:36Your neighbor will need to take your mail while you're away.
01:40A well-manicured property is a clear sign that you are always there.
01:45You've always kept your lawn mown and hedges trimmed, so you will need to arrange for someone to do this
01:51while you're away.
01:53If it was winter, any untouched snow around your house would also make it a target.
01:59Having a neighbor make pretend footprints that show recent activity will also provide a deterrent.
02:06There are many types of hedges that act as a great first defense.
02:10Luckily, you have sharp-leaved shrubs along your fences.
02:15If someone jumps into your property and lands on a sharp or spiky bush, they will immediately cry out in
02:21discomfort.
02:22This will alert your neighbors of an intruder.
02:26And the foliage will also catch fragments of clothing that could be used as evidence later.
02:33In preparation for your trip the week before, you opened and closed your curtains at random times throughout the day.
02:41You made sure there were no clear patterns, so it won't matter if they're left open while you're away, just
02:47in case someone was scouting your property.
02:51Burglars spend several days walking or driving through neighborhoods, identifying the behaviors of each house.
02:59One thing they don't really like is a neighborhood watch.
03:03Criminals do their research before they start scouting and will avoid these areas.
03:08Something for you to organize when you get back.
03:12Now, move all your expensive electronics away from the windows so there's nothing of value in clear view.
03:19Put them inside a cupboard or a concealed room.
03:23Don't worry about TVs.
03:25They're too large and take effort to move.
03:28The criminals are more interested in the smaller devices, like an iPad and gaming devices.
03:35Put your small expensive items, like jewelry, in boxes and hide them away in a secret location.
03:41Surprisingly, a kid's room is a good spot.
03:44Burglars have admitted to never going into them, as there's nothing of value in toys.
03:50Take photos of all the serial numbers on your electronic devices and create an inventory for insurance purposes.
03:5995% of break-ins are done by force, so it's time to reinforce your windows and doors.
04:07You can make it even more difficult for the crooks.
04:10Remove all stools, chairs, and ladders in the backyard and put them into your garage.
04:15Otherwise, they will help provide easier access points to higher entrances, like the air conditioner box.
04:23This is one of their favorites.
04:25Without a way to reinforce it, it's easy to tear off and creates an entrance.
04:30Don't make it easier for them with a step-up.
04:34Burglars can break down a weak door within one minute.
04:38Install a metal frame instead of wood for more support.
04:41The hinges and lock should have adequate strength to withstand being kicked long enough until they give up.
04:49With the lock as the remaining weak spot, this can easily be picked by an experienced thief.
04:55A simple protection lock that holds it in place will make sure it won't budge.
05:02The hinges on your garage door swing outwards, which makes it vulnerable, and can be accessed by taking the pins
05:08out of the hinges.
05:10Replace them with tamper-proof pins, so they can't be removed.
05:16And lastly, the garage overhead door is one of the first places a burglar looks to access.
05:22They don't have a lock that fully secures them.
05:24Attach a padlock on the latch connecting it to the track, holding it in place.
05:31Your garage door doesn't have this option, so drill a hole in the track just above one of the rollers
05:37and attach a padlock.
05:40Robbers are scared of dogs, the territorial and loyal guardians of the house.
05:45A survey found that most houses burgled didn't have dogs because thieves don't want to draw attention during a heist.
05:54Unfortunately, you don't own one.
05:57But just placing a dog bowl outside the front door will discourage them.
06:03The burglars have adapted their craft with technology.
06:07Four out of five criminals use social media, like Facebook, Twitter, and Google Maps, to find their targets.
06:15Even sharing a photo with a house key in it is enough for a burglar to create their own key
06:21by zooming in and taking the exact measurements.
06:25Make sure your wireless network is secure and use a new, much stronger password while away.
06:31You're not only vulnerable to physical objects being stolen,
06:36valuable data like passwords and access codes can be taken through your network.
06:41And there's also the threat of infecting devices through malicious malware.
06:47You can also remove the vision of your house completely from Google Maps.
06:53Type in your home address, find the street view of your residence, press the Options button, and select Report a
07:00Problem.
07:02You'll be taken to a screen with an image of your home, with the option to move a red square
07:08to cover your property.
07:12Request it to be blurred under the option, My Home, and enter your exact address.
07:17It will only take a couple of days to be processed.
07:22Don't leave the radio on while away. It won't help.
07:26Through the burglar's method of scouting houses, they take note of radio and TV sounds.
07:33When they return, they check if they're still on, which just makes it easier to confirm that no one's home.
07:41An alternative option to show active presence at home is by making your own audio,
07:47something that plays ambient noises randomly throughout the day,
07:50with footsteps, conversations, and a dog barking.
07:56Leaving your lights on is also not a good idea.
07:59Someone spying will notice your house easier, especially at night,
08:03and you'll be further robbed on your electricity bill.
08:08You're just about ready to leave on your vacation, and need to take the trash out.
08:13If you have some large boxes, break them down, so they can fit inside the bin.
08:18Hide any clues about what valuables you recently received.
08:24Last check, all the doors are locked, and no windows are left open.
08:28Now you can finally enjoy your trip.
08:32But, as you enjoy yourself in your picturesque location,
08:35leave any snaps on your phone while you're over there,
08:39and post them online only when you return.
08:43If you do share your photos while you're away,
08:46it will have made all your preparations pointless.
08:49Every criminal in the area will know you're not home.
08:54But, with 2.5 million houses burgled annually in the USA,
08:59a house without a modern security system is 300% more likely to be broken into.
09:05When you get back from your break, it will be a great idea to install one.
09:09You're thirsty, so you crack open a soda can and take a few big gulps.
09:15Next thing you know, you're out of commission.
09:17Turns out, that can was contaminated with something nasty, like rat urine,
09:23and you had no clue.
09:25Just goes to show, you never know what might be lurking in that seemingly innocent drink.
09:31During transportation, storage, or handling, cans can pick up germs, bacteria, and dirt.
09:37When you drink straight from the can, those germs can easily enter your body.
09:42Cans are often stored in warehouses and rarely get a good cleaning before they reach you.
09:47Warehouse conditions can be pretty gross.
09:50Think rats running over them and less than ideal hygiene.
09:55To stay safe, it's a good idea to clean cans before drinking from them.
09:59Experts suggest giving them a quick wash with soap and water to avoid contamination.
10:05Studies have shown that unwashed bottles can be full of bacteria,
10:08so this step is really important.
10:11Now, quick question.
10:13Who's taken out more people?
10:15Sharks or vending machines?
10:18Surprisingly, vending machines have a darker history.
10:21Let's dive in.
10:22But first, let's define what counts as a vending machine casualty.
10:26We'll rule out things like expired snacks or electric shocks.
10:30Those aren't the machine's fault.
10:33What we do count are incidents where someone was severely harmed,
10:36or, what's worse, passed away from rocking or tilting the machine.
10:40For sharks, any fatal encounter counts.
10:45In a 1995 report, there were two severe incidents that ended up in demise and one serious injury linked to
10:53vending machines.
10:55Since 1978, there have been at least 37 such incidents and 113 injuries,
11:01which gives us about two fatalities per year.
11:05Compare that to one shark-related incident in 2021.
11:09However, this data is quite old.
11:11Since 2008, there haven't been any reported vending machine incidents.
11:16Why the drop?
11:17It could be due to warning signs and credit card readers reducing the need to shake machines.
11:23But remember, your risk varies based on where you live and your habits.
11:28In the end, the vending machine versus shark comparison isn't quite accurate anymore.
11:34Today, you're more likely to have a serious encounter with a shark than a vending machine.
11:38But the point remains.
11:40Sharks aren't the bloodthirsty hunters they're made out to be.
11:44So, someone pointed out your visible nose hairs, and now you're looking for ways to deal with them.
11:49You might think plucking is the way to go, but hold up, it's not as safe as you think.
11:54Here are three solid reasons to avoid plucking your nose hair.
11:59Your nose is full of delicate nerves, follicles, and plenty of bacteria.
12:04Plucking nose hair can damage the sensitive skin inside your nostrils,
12:08letting germs in and causing issues like infections and inflammation.
12:13Also, just like with waxing, plucking nose hair can result in ingrown hairs.
12:18As the hair grows back, it might curl into the follicle, causing bumps, discomfort, and inflammation.
12:25This can lead to folliculitis, which shows up as small, pus-filled red bumps and can be itchy or painful.
12:32In severe cases, plucking nose hairs can cause nasal farunculosis,
12:37a deep follicle infection with swelling and discomfort.
12:40This infection can spread to blood vessels near the brain,
12:43potentially leading to cavernous sinus thrombosis,
12:47a condition where blood clots form behind the eye sockets.
12:50If not treated, this condition can be life-threatening and may cause permanent brain damage.
12:56To avoid these problems, go for trimming your nose hair instead.
13:00Trimming doesn't make your hair grow back thicker or faster,
13:03and it helps maintain the right amount of nose hair to keep out pathogens.
13:09Contact lenses are meant to help you see, but they can make you turn completely blind.
13:15One big no-no is wearing your contacts in the shower.
13:19It's bad for both your lenses and your eye health.
13:22Showering with contacts is like swimming or sleeping with them in.
13:25It's a common mistake.
13:27Water and contacts just don't mix.
13:30You need to keep your lenses clean to avoid any issues.
13:34If water gets behind your lens, germs or chemicals like chlorine can get in there and cause trouble.
13:40At best, you might end up with sore or itchy eyes.
13:43Worse, you could get conjunctivitis from a bacterial infection.
13:47In rare, serious cases, you might even face infections, which can sometimes lead to blindness.
13:54Most people wear contacts in the shower accidentally rather than doing it on purpose.
13:59If this happens, close your eyes right away and carefully step out of the shower to remove your lenses.
14:04If your eyes feel sore or look red afterward, contact your optometrist, ASAP.
14:11Always use the cleaning solution your optometrist recommends to sterilize your lenses before putting them back in.
14:17But really, it's best to take out your contacts before showering or bathing.
14:22If there's one piece of home decor you should keep a close eye on, it's snow globes.
14:27They might seem harmless, but a family in East Hampton, Massachusetts would beg to differ.
14:32In a crazy turn of events, a snow globe sparked a fire in their apartment while no one was home.
14:39Luckily, quick-thinking neighbors and a swift response from the fire department kept the blaze from spreading through the entire
14:45complex.
14:46It was a normal Thursday morning when, around 11.30 a.m., neighbors heard smoke alarms blaring in the apartment
14:53and dialed 911.
14:55Firefighters arrived to find the place locked, so they had to force their way in.
15:00Inside, they found a small fire on the coffee table and a room filled with smoke.
15:05There, they also saw the culprit.
15:07It was a snow globe.
15:08It was sitting just right on the coffee table, and the sunlight hit it at the perfect angle, magnifying onto
15:15some cardboard and styrofoam and setting them on fire.
15:18While it's not calming, fires started by magnified sunlight do happen.
15:24Many firefighters have seen blazes ignited by mirrors and magnifying glasses.
15:28So, keep those snow globes out of direct sunlight.
15:32Better safe than sorry.
15:36All right, let's talk about fatal fruit.
15:39No, I'm not going to bore you with another lame list of the most poisonous fruits out there.
15:44Instead, I'm going to tell you about something heavenly tasty that can make you teleport to the heavens in a
15:50matter of seconds.
15:52Meet the coconut.
15:53This seemingly innocent fruit has a dark side.
15:57Coconuts are responsible for around 150 fatalities each year.
16:02These bad boys have a whole page dedicated to the fatal incidents they've caused.
16:07A full-size coconut weighs about 3 pounds 3 ounces.
16:11And if you know a thing or two about physics, you'll understand that gravity makes them even more dangerous when
16:17they fall from trees.
16:18But it's not just falling coconuts you need to worry about.
16:22Consuming large amounts of coconut water can lead to sudden cardiac arrest due to hyperkalemia, thanks to its high potassium
16:30levels.
16:30And while rare, there have been cases of anaphylaxis in people with coconut allergies.
16:36While the most common way coconuts cause harm is by falling and hitting someone, there have been some unusual incidents
16:43too.
16:44In December 1923, a man in Newcastle, Pennsylvania passed away while trying to crack open a coconut with the butt
16:51end of a loaded revolver.
16:53It went off, and he was shot in the abdomen.
16:56You know those handy selfie sticks that help you nail the perfect shot?
17:00Turns out, they can be way more dangerous than you'd expect.
17:04These little gadgets have led to a surprising amount of injuries and even some fatalities.
17:09People have accidentally knocked themselves or others out, taken a tumble off cliffs, and even been hit by cars while
17:17trying to get that Insta-worthy pic.
17:20Some popular landmarks have even banned selfie sticks altogether.
17:24For instance, the oceanfront in Mumbai has said no to selfie sticks.
17:29India, by the way, leads the world in selfie-related deaths.
17:32Nearly 40% of the 49 globally recorded fatalities over the past three years happened there.
17:39If you still think selfie accidents aren't a big deal, consider this.
17:43From 2008 to mid-2021, a staggering 379 people lost their lives while trying to get that perfect shot.
17:52So yeah, it's definitely something to take seriously.
17:57Well, it's that time of year again, spring cleaning.
18:01Making your way outside, you grab the duster and broom to get rid of all those cobwebs on your windows.
18:07They don't stand a chance this time.
18:09Removing one cobweb after the other, you suddenly notice some weird-shaped mud stuck under the eaves and porch.
18:17What's this?
18:18It suddenly dawns on you, these have to be mud-dauber wasp nests.
18:23You're probably thinking there's a swarm of them around with so many nests being side-by-side.
18:29Luckily, mud-dauber wasps are solitary insects.
18:33Phew!
18:33All those little mud huts are filled with paralyzed spiders.
18:38Sometimes, even up to 500 spiders can be trapped in these lockers, just waiting for the wasp young to hatch.
18:45If the nest has holes, it may indicate the nest is inactive or old,
18:50as mud-dauber wasps create holes when they leave the nest.
18:54If you're not going to remove them, it's best to wait till nighttime when they're not as active.
19:00While they're pretty placid, if they feel threatened, they won't hesitate to stay.
19:06Looking like someone got halfway through building one insect and forgot what part came next,
19:12The mole cricket is one insect that really looks out of this world.
19:17With claws like a mole, a body of a cricket, and the head of a shrimp,
19:23this critter is like the platypus of the insect world.
19:26They're not venomous and will only bite if you trap them inside your hand.
19:30And if you really annoy it, it's got something else up its sleeve.
19:35The wings.
19:35They can spit a foul-smelling brown liquid from their body, just like a skunk.
19:41So, just let them leave your home, and there will be nothing to clean up.
19:46Rock pools are teeming with all sorts of plant and animal life.
19:51Sea creatures, such as starfish, seagrass, hermit crabs, tiny fish, and all types of octopuses.
19:58If you come across this tiny blue-ringed octopus, it's best to leave it alone.
20:04It's flashing neon blue at you for a reason.
20:07This miniature octopus has a venomous bite that's a thousand times stronger than cyanide,
20:13with no antidote available.
20:15Don't poke it with a stick or try to pick one up.
20:18It's not worth the trip to the hospital.
20:21Or the morgue.
20:23Snakes on land are scary, but sea snakes are on an entirely different level.
20:28Found in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, there are about 50 different species of sea snakes,
20:35and they're beautiful as much as they're dangerous.
20:38Luckily, they don't seem to worry about us too much.
20:41The Dubois sea snake is arguably the most venomous snake in the ocean,
20:46with the big sea snake not far behind.
20:49Their venom makes a cobra's bite seem like a walk in the park.
20:52The venom of both these snakes is extremely dangerous.
20:57Good thing for us that their venom can take hours to cause any symptoms in humans.
21:01If they can bite through your wetsuit, that is.
21:05Now, if this fly lands on your arm outside, you might just scream a little.
21:10Hey, I wouldn't blame you.
21:12The scorpion fly, as its name suggests, has a curved tail that looks just like a scorpion stinger.
21:18But you can breathe a sigh of relief.
21:21This is only used for mating.
21:23It also has a long, beak-like head that's used to feed after stealing insects from spiders' webs.
21:30To find the perfect partner, they love to give the equivalent of a box of chocolates and flowers.
21:36Except theirs is saliva.
21:38Hmm, how romantic!
21:41If you happen to be in Africa, you might just miss this large bird if you're not paying attention.
21:47The shoebill will just casually stand still as you walk right on by.
21:52Going up to 5 feet tall with an 8-foot wingspan, the shoebill sounds like an apex predator, though it's
22:00anything but.
22:01Known as one of the most slow-moving birds, almost statue-like,
22:06the shoebill just eats fish near the surface of the water, without a care in the world.
22:11This bird isn't afraid of humans at all.
22:14While they won't naturally come over to talk about the weather, they'll allow us to get close enough for some
22:20photos.
22:21Now, if you hear a small, squeaking sound while you're in the garden,
22:26it could be a mouse, a squirrel, or a rhinoceros beetle is letting you know that you are too close.
22:33They love to make a racket when bothered.
22:36With a giant scary horn on top of their head, they might seem like they're able to defend themselves with
22:42it.
22:42But that's not possible at all.
22:45That's only to move leaves and sticks out of their way, and to stop other males from coming into the
22:51female beetle's area.
22:52Not only have they got a horn on their head, but they've also got Herculean strength, able to lift 850
23:00times their own weight.
23:02It's like you or me lifting 65 tons or 11 elephants.
23:06Hey, let's try it.
23:09Found mainly in China, the small, tufted deer looks adorable with its tuft of hair.
23:15That is, until it turns around.
23:18Oh no, it's a vampire deer!
23:21Luckily, this animal doesn't want to taste your blood or wear a cape.
23:26Only males grow these during the mating season, rather than antlers, to fight over territories and female-tufted deer.
23:33These fangs are more like elephant tusks than sharp teeth.
23:38Not only do they have fangs, but they're also known to bark like a dog and flee like a cat
23:43when they're scared.
23:46Red sky at night, sailor's delight.
23:49Red sky in the morning, sailor's warning.
23:52No one said anything about a red tide, though.
23:56The red tide is a toxic algal bloom that rises up from the seafloor after particularly bad storms.
24:03This algae looks a lot like spilled ketchup or rust in the water, but it's much worse for the life
24:09around it.
24:10Fish and marine life will try to escape once exposed to the toxic algae in their water.
24:15It's not particularly harmful to humans who are exposed to it.
24:19But if you eat seafood contaminated with its toxins, things can become a bit more serious.
24:25So, if the sea is red, just stay out of the water.
24:31Some spiders love to show off with bright colors to show they're dangerous.
24:36Not the Sydney funnel-web spider of Australia.
24:40This glossy black spider doesn't eat theatrics to prove it's tough.
24:44These bad-tempered crawlers cause serious alarm when they decide to bite us.
24:50It can shut down our entire nervous system in as little as 30 minutes.
24:54Making their web in any shelter, like old logs, shoes, or even garden gnomes,
25:01the funnel-web spiders like to live close to our surroundings for easy food.
25:06When they get tired of an area, they just leave their web behind and wander off to find somewhere new.
25:13Perfect!
25:15Some say honey badgers don't care, and I think they might be right.
25:20When you're brave enough to take food away from a jaguar, lion, or hyena,
25:24hey, what do you got to fear?
25:27These tough relatives of the weasel aren't just ferocious, they're super smart.
25:32Known to even use tools to escape from enclosures.
25:35Objects like rakes, stones, and mud just become things to climb for freedom.
25:41Aside from their physical similarities to the skunk,
25:44the honey badger also boasts a dangerous gland in its tail containing a powerful stink machine.
25:51So, they're tough, stinky, have extremely stretchy and strong skin,
25:56and to top it all off, they've got a strong immunity to scorpions and snakes.
26:01The best thing to do if you walk into a honey badger is to leave it alone.
26:06What chance do we have?
26:09Ever heard of the fungus strawberries and cream?
26:13No?
26:13What about its other name?
26:15The bleeding tooth fungus?
26:16This fungus isn't toxic, but tastes so bitter that you might think twice about trying some.
26:23When young and growing, this white mushroom appears to have red jelly coming out of its pores.
26:29This sticky liquid is sap that's pushed up from taking on too much water.
26:34The adult mushroom is just a boring beige compared to this.
26:39Underneath the mushroom cap, where its spores are produced, it has a tooth-like structure, just to make it even
26:45weirder.
26:48Tasmanian devils have a reputation for being bad-tempered when threatened by a predator,
26:53fighting other males, or getting a place at the table for dinner.
26:57They're dubbed devils because of the teeth-bearing, lunging, and one of the scariest shrieks you'll ever hear in the
27:04middle of the night.
27:05They'll also eat pretty much anything they can get a hold of, too.
27:09They don't habitually go for people, although they will defend themselves if they're cornered.
27:14With such a powerful bite, you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end.
27:19Good thing the tassie devils would much rather escape as well.
27:26Here's how you can protect your bank card from potential fraudsters.
27:30Use a marker and cover the last four digits.
27:33You can also use a sticker that's easy to remove and place it over the security code.
27:38Have you had a houseguest that didn't use a coaster?
27:41Get a hair dryer and hold it a couple of inches away from the stain.
27:44Blow it on medium heat for a couple of minutes to evaporate the watermark.
27:48If a faded ring remains, mix equal amounts of vinegar and olive oil in a bowl.
27:53Wipe it onto the marked area and rub it in until the stain disappears.
27:57Then wipe it off.
27:58Don't waste time scrubbing the burnt stains off the bottom of a pan.
28:02Instead, fill it with water and add three tablespoons of salt.
28:06Let it sit overnight as the salt dissolves the burnt marks.
28:09And in the morning, pour the water out of the pan.
28:12This way, it will be much easier to scrub all that grease off.
28:16Picture this.
28:16You're on vacation and your shirt has become all crinkled inside the luggage.
28:21You need it tonight, but the hotel doesn't have an iron.
28:24Don't panic.
28:24Hang the shirt up in the bathroom.
28:26And while you relax in a hot shower, the heat and moisture will unwrinkle your shirt.
28:31It won't be perfect, but it will get much better without any effort.
28:34The football is on, and it turns out you've run out of standard batteries.
28:39You can use a smaller battery instead that easily fits inside.
28:43Now take some aluminum foil and crunch it up.
28:46Fit it into the gap on the negative or flat end of the battery.
28:49All done.
28:50You can turn on the TV now.
28:52Now, once your flip-flops crack and the plug easily slips out of the hole,
28:56it's normally a sign that you need a new pair.
28:58But there's a way to extend their mileage.
29:01Push the plug back through the hole, then take a bread clip and attach it to the end.
29:05The clip will provide enough support for the plug to remain in place.
29:10You've received a package and the receipt is taped on.
29:13You've managed to detach it from the box.
29:15But how to separate the tape without ripping the paper?
29:18Hold both ends of the tape apart, and by pulling it slowly,
29:21the tape stretches and separates itself from the paper without tearing it apart.
29:27Ziploc bags are perfect to keep things dry, but it would be great if they were larger.
29:32Take two and turn one of them inside out.
29:35They can now connect and work as one large bag, big enough to protect a keyboard.
29:41There's no need to carry your keys in your hand when you go for a job.
29:44Instead, put them inside your pocket, take a rubber band, then tie it around the pocket from the inside.
29:50This stops the keys from falling out.
29:53You've broken your key in the door. It's stuck. Great!
29:57Arranging for a locksmith could cost up to $100.
30:01But for a cheaper and quicker option, try using a hot glue stick.
30:04Heat the end with a lighter, and once it's warm enough to melt, push the glue into the keyhole.
30:09The melted glue will enter the available space covering part of the key.
30:14Once it cools, it compresses and gains a strong hold of the key's end.
30:18Now, just pull it out.
30:21If you need to siphon liquid through a hose and want to avoid using your mouth,
30:25put one end in the liquid and hold the other upwards with your thumb closing the top.
30:30Now shake up and down.
30:31This jiggle motion pushes liquid upwards, a little each time.
30:36And once it reaches the top, lower the exit point and let gravity do the rest.
30:41You've left your keys locked inside the car.
30:43It's an older model with a roll-down window.
30:45You could get the coat hanger and begin the long process of finding the lock.
30:49Or use duct tape.
30:51Make about 20 2-foot-long strands.
30:54Stick them onto the window, allowing enough room for the tape to grab onto at the bottom.
30:59Then with a friend, take the ends of the tape, holding them together, and pull downwards.
31:03The force will allow the window to lower enough that you can unlock the door.
31:08While drilling long screws into hardwood, your old drill might not have enough power,
31:13leaving them only halfway in.
31:15Before the drill gives up, get a block of wax and scrape the edges of the screws with it.
31:20The wax works like a lubricant, melting as it gets warm, and providing easy entry for the screw.
31:26You're out camping, but you didn't bring anything to light the barbecue.
31:30Take a small plastic bag that won't leak, fill it up with water, and close it tight, making a round
31:36bubble.
31:36Hold it over where you want to catch the light from the sun.
31:39The bag of water will work like a magnifying glass, starting up the barbecue.
31:43Just as long as it's a sunny day.
31:46Missing a corkscrew or a cork breaking halfway?
31:49By using a stove lighter, heat the top of the bottle.
31:52The heat slightly expands the glass, and this forces the cork out the top.
31:57You've superglued your fingers again.
32:00Take some salt and pour it on top of your stuck fingers.
32:02Put your fingers into the water and slowly rub.
32:06The mixture will dissolve the glue and release you in no time.
32:09While hanging up a painting, it can be impossible to find that stubborn nail.
32:14Place a fork upside down and insert it so the nail is in between the middle fork teeth.
32:18The fork has provided a long arm that's separated from the wall, making it easier to slip the string of
32:25the painting over the nail.
32:27Once it's perfectly balanced, simply remove the fork.
32:32You need to put a cake into a container, but taking it out again later by lifting it up from
32:37the inside might ruin the cake.
32:39Put the lid upside down and place the cake on the lid.
32:42The base of the container is now the lid, making it much easier to access, slice by slice.
32:50Pour out water more efficiently from large jugs and bottles by swirling.
32:54This will make the liquid inside spin, creating a vortex.
32:58The vortex allows for the air to flow back into the bottle as the water pours out, much faster than
33:04the glugging alternative.
33:07There's an easier and less messy way to remove eggshells from a boiled egg.
33:12Once fully boiled, crack the shell on both ends by tapping them.
33:15On one end, pinch off the shell. Use the opened end to blow with your mouth.
33:20The force of air will push the flesh and expand the eggshell, forcing out the egg, undamaged.
33:27When the hinges of your laptop break, repairing them can cost up to $300.
33:33A far cheaper fix is to buy a picture frame and tape it to the back of the screen.
33:38You've dropped a small piece of jewelry on the floor, seemingly impossible to find.
33:43Take a stocking and place it over the end of the vacuum hose.
33:46Give the area a good vacuum and check the end periodically.
33:50You will eventually find it sitting at the end.
33:53You've drilled a hole in the wall, but the drill hole is now too wide.
33:57Remove the screw and find an object that is slightly shorter and thinner.
34:01Pieces of plastic, small wires, paper clips, or even toothpicks are perfect.
34:06Place whichever item you find inside the hole.
34:08It's filled the gap enough so the screw will now re-enter securely.
34:13Taking the trash out can put you in a gross scenario of getting bin juice on you.
34:17A great way to avoid this is by placing old papers at the bottom of the bag.
34:22Now, not only does it absorb all the liquids from the food and other sources,
34:26but also helps prevent bad smells from forming within a bin.
34:30Nobody likes mosquitoes, and pesticides are pricey.
34:34A cheap alternative is to take a plastic bottle and cut the top part off from the bottom of the
34:39funnel.
34:40After removing it, turn it upside down and put it inside the bottle.
34:44Mix two cups of warm water with two tablespoons of sugar.
34:48The mosquitoes will be attracted to the formula inside and become trapped.
34:52Now just sit back and relax without getting bitten.
34:57Did you know that most break-ins take place in the middle of the day?
35:02The FBI says burglaries happen mid-day because people are outside the house.
35:08Don't let your home be an easy mark for theft.
35:12Here are 10 tips to protect your home and some security items you might need along the way.
35:19Number one on our list is portable door locks.
35:22They aren't just designed for regular houses.
35:25Let's say you stay in a rented house, where other guests also come and go.
35:32You can carry one of these portable locks with you.
35:35Many rooms have secondary locking mechanisms besides the regular lock,
35:40like security chains attached to the door, but you shouldn't always rely on them.
35:45These mechanisms are only held by screws.
35:48It means they're easy to dislocate.
35:52There are many portable lock models, so what should you look for?
35:56Ease of use is the key for installation and removal in case of emergency.
36:02Most inward swing doors are suitable for these items.
36:06Adalock is a good example.
36:08You can find it on Amazon.
36:09It's fairly inexpensive, has a versatile design, and most importantly, comes in one piece.
36:16It takes seconds to upgrade your safety.
36:19You insert the claws into the door's strike plate and then close the door.
36:23It'll be held in position with a handle.
36:25There you go.
36:28Burglars don't hang out in your house or bother stealing heavy stuff, like TVs.
36:33They want to get in and out in under 10 minutes.
36:37What you should do is take some precautions to slow them down.
36:41Laminated glass is great for this.
36:44You should consider investing in it.
36:46Normal windows that are made with tempered glass can shatter easily, but laminated windows are like shields.
36:54They can crack but not break apart.
36:56Instead of making smashing noises and grabbing attention, the burglar will probably leave.
37:02The structure of laminated glass is different from the regular one.
37:06It holds the piece intact even after a strong impact.
37:11Laminated glass windows are 100 times stiffer and 5 times more durable than standard.
37:18What makes these types of glass so special?
37:21Firstly, it's made with layers.
37:23There are two layers of glass, and there's a vinyl material in between that helps keep the two layers intact.
37:30As a bonus, laminated ones have a soundproofing feature.
37:34Two birds with one stone.
37:41The interlayer absorbs some of the outside noise.
37:44It's glass after all.
37:46Aren't we going to see the vinyl layer?
37:48That might be the question that popped into your head.
37:51Nope, laminated glass is transparent, just like other types.
37:56Enjoy the crystal clear views while staying safe.
37:58I would say, but unfortunately, it's expensive to get these specifically manufactured burglar deterring glasses.
38:05You can have professionals install a laminate film onto your standard windows, or you can even buy security film.
38:13They all work according to the same principle, but obviously, these alternatives cannot be as strong as the laminated glass
38:20itself.
38:22The next few tips come from an ex-burglar, Michael Fraser.
38:26Now, he's giving bits of advice on how to protect from theft.
38:31His first tip is quite interesting.
38:34Don't put a Beware of the Dog sticker if you have a dog.
38:37If a dog can walk around the house without triggering the alarm, so can a human.
38:43This is the way burglars think.
38:45Plus, many dogs get friendly in a short time, unless they're specifically trained to catch strangers.
38:52Otherwise, they can easily be put in a room, and well, you know the rest.
38:57Bye-bye to precious items.
39:00Advertising your house for sale online is a standard procedure to attract potential buyers, but also thieves.
39:07With your innocent pics, burglars can have floor plans with virtual tours.
39:11They can easily spot the entry and escape routes.
39:15Sounds like a perfect plan to rob a house.
39:19Number 5 is buying a home security system.
39:22It helps prevent thefts and notifies you if that happens.
39:26According to the data, homes without a security system are almost three times more vulnerable to break-ins.
39:33There are numerous ones to choose from.
39:35Some are pricey, but luckily, there are affordable options too.
39:39You don't even have to call professionals.
39:42This do-it-yourself security system from Amazon is an example of a budget-friendly gadget with useful features.
39:49These types of devices are designed to be easy to install.
39:53You'll be guided through an app for the software and for the product itself.
39:57Bonus, you won't have to deal with screws, tools, or drilling.
40:01They have fast emergency dispatch that can notify the authorities if you say so.
40:06Since it's easy to set up, it's perfect for short-term residents too.
40:11Remember I mentioned that if a dog can walk in the house, so can a thief?
40:15Well, technology is not in favor of thieves.
40:19These types of devices can now detect intruders and be friends with your pet.
40:23The sensors can be put in the window, doors, and corners, but still be adjusted to avoid fake alarms by
40:30the pets.
40:33Another device to add a layer of protection to you, especially in shared residences like dorms, is a doorstop alarm.
40:41These devices are very compact, so you can put them in your luggage and take them on your dream vacation.
40:47You can use it in your daily life.
40:49A doorstop alarm can be used on any door as long as you place it inside.
40:54It works as a door wedge, but it keeps the door closed.
40:58How does it work?
40:59When the alarm is triggered, it will keep the intruder outside the door and activate a noise alarm.
41:04It can wake the owner of the house or neighbors.
41:07This one, again, can be easily found on Amazon.
41:12Ex-Burglar Michael also recommends thinking like a thief.
41:16Ask yourself, how would I get in?
41:18It's a great starting exercise for discovering vulnerable spots.
41:23Walk around your home.
41:24Is there a window that can be easily opened?
41:27Oh wait, is it your laptop on the desk that can be seen from the street?
41:31Speaking of the street,
41:32If you buy a new electronic device like a TV or a computer,
41:37don't leave the empty cartons displayed near the trash container.
41:41This looks like an invitation to thieves.
41:44They will know that you have expensive electronics inside the house.
41:49Instead, break down the cardboard boxes and then put them away for recycling.
41:55Unfortunately, first floor windows are entry points in 23% of home break-ins.
42:01To prevent this, you can purchase a wireless alarm kit.
42:05When it comes to the front door, installing a double-keyed deadbolt can be a solution.
42:11Similarly, motion sensor lighting does the job.
42:15Do you have blind spots around your home?
42:17Upgrade to a security camera with night vision.
42:20If you want to see what's happening inside your house rather than outside,
42:24you can get one of these cool security gadgets.
42:28Orbi Robotic Mobile Sphere is like a ball, but it has a camera inserted in it.
42:33It doesn't have a limited view.
42:35Imagine, you're at the office and want to play with your dog.
42:38Your 4-pod best friend can chase the ball at home while you're away controlling the device.
42:44Ah, okay, we're here to save your house from burglars,
42:47so I'll leave fun pet toys for another video.
42:50Here is a shocking truth about fences.
42:53Most people believe that fences are like guardians protecting their property.
42:58Sorry to break it to you, but even tall and solid ones aren't as secure as you believe.
43:03The number one rule of a thief is not to be caught,
43:06and if they broke into a house with fences at night, they'd be perfectly covered.
43:11Your neighbors can't see who that person is.
43:14You know, unless they have x-ray vision.
43:17The fences should be hard to climb.
43:19One of the points of having a fence is privacy.
43:22But I'm just saying metal, wire, and picket fences are harder for intruders to fly in.
43:27So, we cracked the burglar's code.
43:30Implementing the tips on our list might help you discourage and prevent burglary,
43:34and keep you safe.
43:35Did you experience such unpleasant incidents?
43:38If so, do you have any other tips for fellow brightsiders to watch out for?
43:46What's hiding inside Coca-Cola cans and regular household batteries?
43:50Why do magnets affect breakfast cereals?
43:53Do crosswalk buttons actually work, or are they just useless decorations?
43:59What does that USB symbol really mean?
44:03I'm not sure I know the answers to these and similar questions,
44:06but I'm eager to learn the truth together with you.
44:09Let's find it out.
44:11Coca-Cola cans have a secret few people know about.
44:15Here's a Coke can.
44:17Let's submerge it in a highly corrosive alkaline solution.
44:20The aluminum dissolves due to a process known as hydrolysis,
44:24and we can see a plastic liner inside the can.
44:27It's made from a polymer or epoxy resin,
44:30and serves as some kind of a protective barrier
44:33between the aluminum walls of the can and the rather acidic soda.
44:38Despite a popular myth,
44:40household batteries don't actually contain liquid,
44:43and if you accidentally cut them open,
44:45no toxic liquid will spill.
44:47Most of them are dry cell batteries,
44:49which are made of electrochemical cells.
44:51Those convert chemical energy into electrical energy.
44:55Larger batteries often house numerous small cells within them, too.
44:59Even Tesla vehicle batteries consist of multiple small cells.
45:03When combined, they easily provide the necessary voltage.
45:09Most toothbrushes have differently colored bristles,
45:12but they aren't just pleasing to the eye.
45:14Those bristles, often blue, have a functional purpose.
45:18They're called toothbrush indicators,
45:20and their colors fade as you use the brush.
45:22The American Dental Association recommends changing your toothbrush at least four times a year.
45:28And by getting paler,
45:29these bristles help you figure out when it's time to replace your toothbrush.
45:34You'll probably agree that there's no better snack than a pack of chips.
45:38Some are flat, others have ridges.
45:40Is it just aesthetics?
45:42Not really.
45:43The main purpose of those lines on some kinds of chips
45:46is to help with the distribution of spices and seasonings.
45:49In other words,
45:51all those substances that make your chips taste like cheese
45:53are mostly stored inside the lines.
45:56Plus, the lines make chips crunchier.
46:00Now, this one might be a surprise,
46:02but some breakfast cereals are magnetic.
46:05That's because they're often fortified with iron in the form of a fine powder.
46:09Due to the added iron,
46:11cereal flakes get attracted to magnets.
46:13All this may sound kind of alarming,
46:15but in reality,
46:16the iron content in the flakes is minimal
46:18and doesn't pose any threat to your health.
46:22That clear fluid in gel pens is called the ink follower or stopper fluid.
46:27The gel in such pens contains pigment particles
46:29dissolved in a polymer solution.
46:32The main task of the stopper fluid is to be a barrier
46:35to prevent the gel from evaporating or leaking out.
46:38Without this transparent fluid,
46:40your gel pen wouldn't function.
46:43The fluid always stays in one position
46:45and doesn't get dissolved with the gel.
46:47Neither does it move backwards or flow out of the pen.
46:52Many pedestrian crosswalk buttons,
46:54namely in New York,
46:56are placebo buttons.
46:57They do literally nothing when you press them.
47:01Originally, they were functional after being introduced in 1964,
47:04but today, most of them don't affect traffic lights,
47:07which are programmed based on the real needs of the traffic flow.
47:11Why do such buttons even exist, then?
47:13It's a simple psychological trick,
47:16providing you with an illusion of control.
47:19You might have noticed that movie theater seats are almost always red.
47:24This choice isn't random.
47:25It has strategic importance,
47:27which is rooted in visual science.
47:30The thing is, red light has a longer wavelength.
47:33It means that it's the first color to disappear in low light.
47:36It allows the audience to concentrate better on the screen once the movie begins.
47:40Such a design choice enhances the viewing experience by minimizing distractions.
47:46Speed bumps are crucial for pedestrian safety.
47:49But at the same time,
47:50they can seriously increase car emissions
47:53due to the non-stop acceleration and deceleration they cause.
47:58To address this issue,
47:59some cities like London are testing fake speed bumps.
48:03Those are optical illusions painted on the road.
48:06They look raised from a driver's perspective,
48:08but in reality, they're flat.
48:10Authorities hope that this approach will slow down drivers
48:13without having a negative impact on the environment.
48:18Soda bottles are always filled in such a way
48:21that there's some space between the liquid and the cap.
48:24That's because soda contains carbon dioxide.
48:26It's a gas that can expand once the bottle's heated.
48:29If there's no gap in the bottle,
48:31it can break because of the pressure building inside.
48:35Also, when you open your drink,
48:37the gases go out in the form of bubbles,
48:39making the drink overflow.
48:41The gap helps with this problem, too.
48:45The USB symbol, looking like a trident,
48:48has always sparked multiple speculations about its origin.
48:52One popular idea is that it represents Neptune's trident
48:56and symbolizes power and adaptability.
48:58But there's also a little bit less exciting theory.
49:02A man who claimed to have designed the symbol in the 1980s
49:05stated that it was supposed to represent connectivity.
49:08The large circle symbolizes a computer,
49:11while the attached shapes, the circle, the triangle, and square,
49:15stand for different outputs.
49:18The design of a tennis racket has a specific feature known as the throat.
49:23It's an open space below the head of the racket.
49:26This space isn't just for storing balls,
49:29it also improves the racket's aerodynamics by letting air pass through.
49:33It seriously reduces drag during swings.
49:38Speaking of tennis,
49:39tennis courts are usually built with a north-south orientation.
49:43It helps minimize the impact of the sun's position during the game,
49:47ensuring that neither player has the sun directly in their eyes.
49:51Look closely at a tram's overhead lines,
49:54and you'll see that its contact wires zigzag back and forth
49:58instead of going in a straight line.
49:59That's because all trams have pantographs attached to their roofs.
50:04The upper part of the pantograph is gradually worn down by the overhead wire
50:09and eventually needs to be replaced.
50:11To wear it down evenly,
50:13the wire is not installed strictly along the tram's path,
50:17but in zigzag patterns.
50:19As the tram moves,
50:21the pantograph slides along the wire,
50:23and it wears down evenly.
50:26Those cone-shaped water cooler cups?
50:28Their shape is intentionally designed
50:31to prevent users from setting the cups down.
50:33This allows employees to minimize the risk of spilling water
50:37on their desks around various electronic devices.
50:40Plus, less material is used to produce cone-shaped cups,
50:43which makes the process less wasteful and more cost-effective.
50:48It also kind of supports sustainability
50:50by encouraging people to drink their water quickly
50:52and dispose of their cups immediately after.
50:57Most suitcases have two zipper pulls,
51:00and it serves several purposes.
51:02First of all,
51:03if one zipper fails,
51:05the other can keep the suitcase closed.
51:07Even better,
51:09having two zippers allows you to have easier access
51:11to small sections of your suitcase
51:13without having to open it entirely.
51:16And finally,
51:17when you have two zippers,
51:19you can connect them with a padlock
51:20for increased security.
51:24Some plastic milk containers have dents on their sides.
51:27These dents serve several purposes.
51:30When milk spoils,
51:31it usually causes swelling
51:33and high-pressure buildup inside the container.
51:35That's when the dent pops out
51:37and doesn't let the jug blow up.
51:39Plus,
51:40if you decide to freeze the milk,
51:41it will expand like any other fluid.
51:44And then again,
51:46the indentation will pop out
51:47and prevent the container
51:48from breaking inside your freezer.
51:52If you ever had a problem
51:54figuring out why fake pockets exist,
51:57you need to hear this.
51:58The main reason is that
52:00if a clothing item has a specific cut or shape,
52:03pockets may spoil it.
52:04They can alter the item's shape
52:06either in the warehouse
52:07or already on the retail rack.
52:09The solution?
52:11Getting rid of the pockets in key areas.
52:14Plus,
52:14fake pockets are obviously cheaper
52:16and they don't get stretched out.
52:20The thermos wasn't actually invented
52:22to keep your coffee warm.
52:24It was made by a Scottish scientist
52:26who wanted a safe place
52:27to keep his chemicals
52:28at a stable temperature.
52:30So,
52:31he took two bottles,
52:32put the smaller one
52:33inside the bigger bottle,
52:35and vacuumed out the air between them.
52:39And what are the questions?
52:39Well,
52:40We'll be all right.
