00:00You, your bio says, you know, as I mentioned in my introduction of you, you commit your life to essentially
00:10making a difference from what I can see beyond being a husband and a father. Where does that come from,
00:17this sense of public duty, and why is that important to you?
00:22I was born into it.
00:27Yeah, but you can get born into it, and then there's real passion for it.
00:32Sure, yeah, there's having to do it, and then there's choosing to do it, for sure.
00:37But for me, yeah, after my mum died, just before my 13th birthday, I was, I don't want this job,
00:44I don't want this role, wherever this is headed, I don't like it.
00:49It killed my mum, and I, this is just, this is, I was very much against it, and I stuck
00:53my head in the sand for years, fingers of the ears, blah, blah, blah, blah, don't want it.
00:57And eventually I realised, well, hang on, if there was somebody else in this position, how would they be making
01:02the most of this platform, and this ability, and the resources that come with it to make a difference in
01:07the world?
01:07And also, what would my mum want me to do?
01:10And that really changed my perspective.
01:12And then I realised, wow, actually, helping other people is also helping me.
01:18And that service, for me, and I've seen it for so many other people as well, is a cure in
01:24itself.
01:26Because it really is incredibly energising, it can be very depleting, when you're bouncing around, trying to give as much
01:31time and energy as you can, but certainly for me, and for my wife, the work that we do, we
01:38really enjoy it.
01:39We get to hang out together, and meet amazing people, and go to some incredible places.
01:47But that service, that giving back, for me, has been a cure, one of the under-the-carpet reasons and
01:56such for creating Invictus, or certainly one of the benefits that I get out of Invictus, is I get my
02:01annual fix by being back together with that community, and hearing their stories, and putting everything into perspective, and being
02:10re-energised for whatever life throws at me.
