Has the Tatum/Brown era been 'historic' thus far?
Where would this current era rank all time in Celtics history? Jaylen Brown talks upcoming playoffs and the expectations. Is JB just "entering his prime"?
Transcript
00:00Here's Jalen Brown talking about how excited he is for the playoffs.
00:03I think it's been a historic sort of run.
00:07We were able to deliver a championship in 2024.
00:09Unfortunately, we had opportunities in the past that got away from us,
00:13but we've been right there for a long amount of time.
00:16We've gained a lot of experience.
00:18I personally have gained a lot of experience.
00:20It's been a pleasure.
00:20You know, everything isn't always perfect, but it's not supposed to be.
00:23You know, it's a part of the journey.
00:24So I'm grateful to be where I am.
00:26I'm grateful to be here.
00:27I'm excited to go.
00:29I have another opportunity.
00:31I feel like I'm still continuing to get better.
00:33I don't think for some it may be hard to believe because the expectations they put on me,
00:37but I'm still improving.
00:38I'm still getting better.
00:40I'm still learning.
00:41I'm still growing.
00:41I feel like I'm entering my prime, and I'm excited to maximize my potential
00:45and then take advantage of every opportunity that I have to win
00:49and just be a part of a team and be a part of something special.
00:53Okay.
00:53I assume, Shyam, he's talking about when he says historic run,
00:57and he's talking about he and Jason Tatum, correct?
01:00Would you grant him that?
01:02Has it been a historic run for the two of them, or do they need to have won more?
01:07It's tough to say that it's a historic run when you put it up against the other great trios even
01:13in Celtics history.
01:15Like, yeah, they're going to get their numbers retired in the rafters.
01:19Talk about another argument that bothers people, how many numbers the Celtics retire.
01:23They're going to be remembered as great Celtics, but the expectation for them is certainly this duo together should win
01:29more than one.
01:30It was a huge underachievement that the last big three with Pierce, Allen, and KG didn't win more than one.
01:38So that's the expectation with this duo to be truly historic in the context of the Celtics.
01:44It was a massive underachievement with that big three.
01:47Massive.
01:48Now Wiggy's overcorrecting because he wants to be tough on the Celtics.
01:52No, no, no, no, because I'm already, I'm already, I'm already, I'm already, I'm already, I'm already in the Twitch
01:59chat going at people.
02:00No, you're in the Twitch chat.
02:01Yes, because I listen, I can't, I listen, I can't take certain people and I'm not going to hold my
02:07tongue for my opinion because on how I see things.
02:11So I'm going to call it like it is, but yes, it was a massive, but I've always been on,
02:15it was a massive achievement with the big three.
02:17And I said it was a massive underachievement with the Bruins too and the core that they had.
02:23They only won one championship.
02:24What's going to disappoint both of you when it comes to the Celtics?
02:28Like if they don't get to the Eastern Conference Finals, then that's a failure.
02:32If they don't get to the NBA.
02:33Because Jason Tatum came back and looks really, really good.
02:36If they don't get to the NBA Finals, it's a failure.
02:39I'll put it right here.
02:40Like I am still nervous about the dynamic between them and the Knicks because of what we saw from that
02:48team last year.
02:49And that is a team that is built to defend against the Celtics.
02:52Like they adjusted themselves to the Celtics in the East.
02:56So they should get to the Eastern Conference Finals, but I am nervous about that Knicks team.
03:02That's the team that I'm looking at.
03:03Game one Sunday, game two Tuesday here when it comes to the Celtics and the 76ers.
03:11The success of the Celtics this season without the period without Jason Tatum.
03:17Yes.
03:18Does most of the credit for that go to Jalen Brown or does most of the credit for that go
03:23to Joe Mazzula?
03:24I would say I would give more of the lion's share of it to Jalen Brown.
03:29I credit Chisholm.
03:30No, I would credit Joe Mazzula for that.
03:34Absolutely.
03:35Because of getting the younger guys and the fresher guys like acclimated so quickly and bought in.
03:41Yes.
03:41I will say this.
03:42To that argument, with Mazzula, he took the what were supposed to be the weaknesses of the Celtics team and
03:50made them strengths.
03:51Like at the beginning of the year, he basically told everybody, we're not going to be able to rebound.
03:54Like, I don't know what you want us to do on the glass.
03:57Now they're a great team on the glass, like usually top three, top four team in rebounding.
04:03And everybody said like, oh, they don't have a starting pig.
04:05They're going to be starting to me as Keita.
04:07He looks like he should be at least in the conversation for most improved player.
04:10Right.
04:11So that goes to the Mazzula point.
04:13But it also goes to Jalen Brown performing at a level that, you know, nobody expected.
04:19And I think people were like, all right, what is he going to look like now that the team says
04:24and he's he's in the MVP conversation.
04:28So the Turner, the team doing what they've done, and I'm not taking anything away from Joe Mazzula.
04:33But if Jalen Brown doesn't have an MVP type of season, we're not sitting here having this conversation.
