00:10She used to be a regular on a Saturday I would pick her up to just take her to the
00:16addresses
00:17then 10-15 minutes we would chit-chat all the way I was the one that took her home that
00:25day
00:26but this is a news house here I would wait till she got in the house and that's the last
00:36I see of her
00:4111 years ago Luna Crown's body was found in the hallway of her bungalow officers who first attended
00:47the scene initially thought that it wasn't suspicious I've worked on lots of murder
00:51investigations over the years and this is one of the worst decisions I've ever seen they made a
00:57right mess of it I mean to say that she don't know cutthroat stabbing and then setting fire it was
01:04a
01:04clear homicide yeah we lost the scene those golden hour principles of securing and preserving that
01:10evidence weren't adhered to on this job years after she was viciously stabbed to death the killer has
01:16still not been caught we had anybody out there anybody that they know came home either with
01:22blood on them and smelling of smoke or came into some money importantly there were defensive type
01:29injuries could she have scratched could she have reached out at her attackers we have a list of
01:36revisited suspects yeah this is almost like the last row of the dice then really it's crucial that we find
01:50the truth
01:54got to question everything believe nobody it's almost a game of chess trying to slip up this is your
02:03opportunity to talk to me
02:12cambridgeshire police's major crime unit are investigating the brutal murder of 86-year-old
02:18una crown detective inspector lee martin visits the lab where testing is being carried out for any
02:26suspicious male DNA present at the scene right where are we we've taken multiple samples with
02:36not been anything significant that would move us any further from that from the clothing there's not
02:41been any breakthrough in the case and then that way we do however have something that will be of
02:48interest it's that clenched this is really protected the surfaces underneath those fingernails and we've
02:55got a YSDR result which has given us a positive funding for a match to the original suspect that was
03:04put
03:04forward for comparison david newton 11 years after the unsolved murder of una crown traces of the familial
03:17dna of 69 year old david newton have been identified on her body it sets the fire the seat of
03:24the fire is her
03:25back and her arm was underneath her chest so that has then stopped the fire damage and whereas
03:36everything else the exposed hand and everything is damaged damaged yeah so then the dna that we've got
03:42from under the fingernails hasn't been exposed to the fire when you know was burnt after her death
03:52her hand was underneath her body and was away from the fire and i like to think that she left
04:01that
04:01for us it's almost like she guarded that hand waiting for us to find that evidence with the forensic
04:11breakthrough the new investigation team seek advice from a kc who specializes in complex cold cases about
04:19the best way to build the most effective case against their suspect the ystr profile of david newton
04:28or somebody in his close male relative lineage could be a potential source of the male dna detected we're
04:36effectively saying anybody that's a male relative of david newton should have the same ystr profile
04:43it's a challenge what i anticipate he is going to do is he's going to say it's not my dna
04:49and you can't
04:51prove that it is so that's where the battleground is going to be yeah so that finding has been
04:58calculated to 28 000 times more likely to be him than anybody else what is unquestionably the case here
05:07is is that the dna match in isolation is not going to prove the case in usual dna
05:16juries have become familiar with the idea of matches where the significance is a billion to one
05:24what we are dealing with can suffer by the comparison which is a statistical significance
05:29of 28 000 to one what is one in 28 000 compared to one in a billion if the jury
05:36is going to be persuaded
05:38that this is his dna it is going to be because this scientific finding of the match combines with other
05:47evidence of circumstances relating to this defendant and events that took place at or about the time
05:56of the killing this case is going to be a a an exercise in trying to make sure that the
06:04jury put the
06:05pieces together the dna result has obviously made all the original circumstantial evidence that bit more
06:13important and mac is going to go out and do some witness inquiries because obviously he was linked to
06:17the original investigation just to build up a picture of david newton that we might not already be aware of
06:30we had newton as a suspect back in the day yeah strong circumstantial evidence oh yeah yeah we knew
06:38it was him proven it's a different matter investigating officer graham macmillan visits david newton's
06:47closest living family in order to profile the suspect we'd built up what i would say was a very good
06:55circumstantial case but nothing was put before the crown prosecution service totally disagree with
07:01it i think we should have continued with our line of investigation and taking this to the cps dna is
07:08clearly very very important but it's not the be all and end all because you have to have context around
07:13it it's vitally important that we keep looking we keep reviewing our investigation you do it for you
07:20as family and they need to see that justice
07:29hello there graham mcmillan from the place is it possible to have a word do you want me to take
07:49it lightly is it not to strangers not to say that yeah we've never spoke to her before he said
07:55my dad
07:55ruined my childhood when her mum passed um she basically said to her dad i'll probably hardly ever
08:00see you again yeah she doesn't like the way he treated her mom throughout her life but i think the
08:07important thing she said was she doesn't think her dad's capable of murder but when he's been drinking
08:14who knows yeah that's basically what she was saying on it yeah the partial dna match needs to be
08:23supplemented with other evidence so officers revisit materials from the original police investigation
08:29including a statement given by david newton's late wife janet can you just give us your full name
08:36place yeah janet newton and your husband's name what's his name david leslie newton hi tell me about
08:45david and he's drinking he's a terrible drinker if he gets on whiskey and vodka would you have said that
08:52david had a problem with drink yeah would you have gone as far to say that he wasn't at all
08:58right
08:59was yeah he was i would say at least the time you need to help but i'm gonna notice janet
09:08obviously
09:10kind of knows what he's like yeah she's just being probably doesn't even understand the relevancy of
09:14it at the moment no hello bert it's great nice to see you it's just janet's marriage to david newton
09:22yeah nobody likes a man because when he's had a drink he can be very violent he's hit janet
09:28several times i see a bruise over her eye it was quite a big bruise from the sort of top
09:35of the
09:35eye and it came down onto a ching yeah a lot of the time she was spending the bedroom because
09:40she
09:40she wouldn't want to come out and show her her injuries injuries yeah visible injuries yeah i would
09:46imagine she had a split lip or black eye or something like that this is 2009 there that's steve newton
09:58yeah just seeing his face he's just a horrible man i can remember him standing on my chest
10:04and i remember the words clearly that's 13 and a half stone of pure muscle um standing i could crush
10:10you you know when somebody rules the house with an iron fist and yeah would it be fair to say
10:16that
10:16there was an atmosphere of fear when he was about yeah it was pure alarm bells for me it wasn't
10:22that's
10:22not normal no that didn't happen in my house yeah and even at that young age it's like
10:28this isn't right yeah if you had words to describe david newton now what how what would you use to
10:36describe a bully a beast a bully a proper bully bully and a beast
10:53officers from the major crime unit visit witnesses from the original investigation into the unsolved
10:59murder to strengthen the circumstantial evidence available for a potential prosecution
11:07you were a witness 11 years ago and you gave four statements what we will do today is read through
11:14the statements yeah you know was a lovely lady in 2012 she told me that man that plays snooker said
11:21he
11:21was going to come round for tea the man she was referring to the snooker player was david newton
11:27i said don't have anyone round don't let people in you don't know and that would have included david
11:33newton i don't have a problem with newton but i have heard some rumors about him hiding in local hedges
11:38whether that is true i do not know david newton him he was the drinker he was a queer boy
11:46when he was
11:46drinking he was a different person jack lord you know he's a weird a weird one you know he was
11:53a
11:53not a character that you want to mix with anyway i wouldn't want to mix with him you were saying
11:59that
11:59one of the things that you've maintained for the entire time is that una must have known her i still
12:09don't stay there okay i would have told her never help me a door yeah
12:15before arresting david newton the team must review the previous interview conducted by
12:21investigating officer graham mcmillan to work out what questions now might reveal the truth of his
12:27involvement there's a lot of groundwork you've got to do you've got to refresh yourself on everything
12:34he said in interviewing the first time he was arrested have you ever had what you would consider
12:40a drinking problem no but then do your family consider that you have had a drinking problem
12:46no i don't think so don't think i've got you know drink problem on the forefront of the investigators
12:53minds is the way david newton is the way he conducts himself okay what's what's your normal
13:01routine on a saturday probably go to the club um ex-servicemen's playing snooker now i've given
13:08up to the services club after he was murdered um no i don't think so i didn't have any money
13:17reviewing all the evidence of the cases before me i constantly asked myself questions of was
13:24something missed or is there something else that we can do differently to try and solve it
13:28did you go back to we went back to the bungalow yes we went back uh monday afternoon and then
13:34we
13:34started sorted things out we found a purse but there was no money in the purse which was most
13:40unusual we couldn't find any money she'd probably draw out 200 pound because she'd like to have that
13:47money so if anybody did do any job for us she'd always pay them at the fire if they'd just
13:54done a
13:54favor of any sort we know she's a lady who habitually dealt in cash so she's not just going to
14:00have
14:01you know just that i mean my grandparents had had loads of cash and i got around they always topped
14:05it
14:06up you know i suspect there was more than the house at the time i know that she would never
14:10be without
14:11notes because julie said there should be some money here somewhere but there's no notes in the purse at all
14:26hmm
14:26i don't think newton here then he's got quite a lot of cash yeah he has got quite a lot
14:31of cash yeah
14:34fruity
14:36more money coming out of the wallet which is unusual for somebody who's on you know largely
14:41on benefits pulling out notes notes yeah has that snooki cube been propped up there the entire
14:50time has he actually played or using it as an excuse to say i was going to play snooker he's
14:56leaving
14:57now he's not even used it yeah we've got sunday the 13th we get down the club yeah then on
15:05monday
15:05the 14th of january can you remember what you did or where you went no okay exhibit gjm20 which is
15:15a
15:15cctv still from the nationwide bank yeah that is me that's you yeah okay can you remember what you're
15:22doing there you're going into the bank this is on the monday after you has been murdered
15:27i um i don't really know what i was doing there we've done checks with the bank you're actually paying
15:34money in where did that money come from it's only at home where my wife will lend you your wife's
15:41like there's the money she won't likely has yes but that was the first time you paid money into your
15:45account in over a year on the back of four hours in the club on a sunday you are very
15:52flush that weekend
15:53this is unusual in the fact that i think it's the first transaction for some time and also the largest
15:58for some considerable amount of time um which given that he'd also spent what appeared to be a fair
16:05bit of money over the weekend at the club exactly why would he need to pay him yeah that's unusual
16:11in
16:11itself so did he not have one out of that cash on him in case lease wanted to speak to
16:15him or something
16:16did you get money from youna's house no i've been around that things that don't add up is that within
16:22six days of of the murder you're telling the police i didn't go out i didn't have any money yeah
16:28i
16:28didn't but you did well yeah not only did you have money you had for you lots of money
16:38i'd like to talk about hoon and crown have a mate did david ever say whether he'd ever spoken to
16:43it before oh he spent it before because he got the key broken the lock right so he had to
16:51go hang
16:51a locksmith to get a key for who knows yeah that he broke in the lock that is compelling if
17:00he went
17:00to get one key cut he could have got two kids and then he's got access immediate access to the
17:05house
17:14i still don't think he knocked on the front door it was only really john and judy that would knock
17:19on the front door and wait for her to go everybody else would go straight around the back i suppose
17:24he's got a key hasn't he's got a key yeah why is her clothing disturbed on the front it's not
17:29going
17:29to have ridden up that high just in struggles i don't think because it's above the breast line isn't
17:35it yeah was he grabbing her breasts the sexual element i can't move away from we know that a few
17:42months before he went to a friend's house she opens the front door kind of invited himself in
17:49she says i'm going to go and get ready to go out um let yourself out well he didn't he
17:55then went and
17:56stood outside her bedroom door watching her in her underwear and then she starts screaming at him
18:02so the voyeurism bit is there and he's just saw the opportunity another old lady that he likes
18:09david newton i would suggest is an alcoholic he has violent tendencies the way that he treats women
18:19makes him a very good suspect for the murder of yuna
18:29satisfied they finally have the evidence officers prepare to arrest david newton for murder
18:37thanks for coming it's the briefing for operation valerian big day and the reason why we need so
18:42many of you is because of the limitations of ystr all that will tell us is that it's david newton's
18:49y chromosome and that's passed down from father to son there's 13 relatives that have been identified
18:54brothers cousins half cousins and their respective children we've got as far north as scotland and as
19:00far south as kent they need to be eliminated by the from the inquiry to confirm their whereabouts
19:04the arrest would be conducted by officers from us with support from the mcu
19:10hi hello mate just setting off uh i'll be uh maxine lane and i'll wait for you guys to come
19:21in call
19:26i think you could have moved away wouldn't you yeah
19:34hello please hello please is that david yeah hi david please come in
19:42david my name's dc harper i'm from the major crime unit
19:45yeah um i'm here to um arrest you on suspicion of the murder of the crown on the 12th of
19:51january
19:522013. okay investigation's been reinvestigated and the universe has come to light so that's why you've
19:57been really arrested okay okay was he surprised yeah interest is um he was like well i said everything
20:06uh in uh in my last interview okay yeah no no sudden sort of unburdening of himself or anything it's
20:15okay
20:16i thought he's on to go in the car i thought he's on to go in the car oh it
20:18couldn't be no way
20:19i thought he'd be no way
20:34i thought he'd be no way
20:49you know that he has been arrested on suspicion of murder in relation to the death of una crown
20:54uh 11 years ago and that he is being questioned here at thorpewood police station in peterborough
21:00she'd been stabbed in the neck and chest and it's thought that the fire was started to try and cover
21:06what had happened police later apologized to una crown's family uh admitting that the failure to
21:13treated as a murder scene from the outset had had an impact on the investigation
21:22you all right thank you apart from being here obviously oh yeah yeah have you ever been arrested
21:27before uh yeah yeah okay circumstances uh suspect is alleged to have murdered a unicrown
21:35it's before me this gentleman's been arrested for this offense before okay following the
21:40investigation offense the evidence has come to light officers search murder suspect david newton's
21:48address for electronic devices all right so should we just get this clear i think we'll start with
21:53this and then we can have this yeah yeah around here and in the bedroom are going to be the
22:00main focus
22:06point yeah it's a bit of a crazy morning a little bit of a shock so i heard a knock
22:10at the door but then
22:11i've heard the police i thought oh no i thought definitely answering that because i know i've done
22:16nothing wrong yeah i don't think he's expecting that well i wasn't expecting that either
22:29he'd normally just sit here having a little drink a little whiskey on his little cabinet here on the
22:34weekend he's best mates of his time bless him if the door was open he would um he would say
22:39come in
22:40come and have a whiskey so i would sit on there with him and have a little whiskey
22:47have you eaten a cell before yes last time when i was in here the first time are you worried
22:55about
22:55being here no past it what's gonna happen what's gonna happen i mean i'll i'll tell them the truth
23:04what i know
23:08don't really interact with anybody i won't say i've got any friends
23:12i'm straight to my daughters you've got to love your kids don't matter what they've done
23:19well i don't reason i suppose are you protective of your guards yes no one touches him
23:29that's why they called me the shovel so i was in my hands
23:36let's just talk about relationship-wise how you're getting on what you do together
23:39what you don't do together that sort of thing choosing what we don't do together okay we sort
23:44just live our own lives you see all right do you mind telling me why that is what caused that
23:49to
23:49happen well with something that happened years ago he had carried on with this woman yeah
23:57it would appear that they live separate lives so that may add to his
24:00his sort of you know frustration and maybe that's led to him seeking out contact with with other women
24:10well we know that he'd he'd gone into that female's house and watch watching our undress
24:18when we came around this morning and you were arrested you're in separate bedrooms
24:22yeah do you still have a sexual relationship with your wife no how does that make you feel
24:30really you know it don't really sort of bother me have you ever wanted to have sex with anybody
24:34else apart from your wife no anybody local no
24:41that's my wife he's put the j in a certain way that it actually looks like the flower and it'll
24:47forget me not
24:51we have a plan for whilst david newton is in custody the plan being effectively that there will be a
24:58series of interviews that will also go through some of the inquiries that need to be done whilst he's in
25:03custody one of our important lines of inquiries is the the bloodline from david newton's family
25:10so we are going to need to get dna swabs and a statement from all of the male family members
25:18we'll be looking to seek a magistrate's authority for an extension hopefully up to the maximum 96 hours
25:25which will afford us the opportunity to get the remaining outstanding inquiries done and also allow
25:30us to fast track some forensics around siblings
25:37officers travel across the country to obtain dna samples and alibi statements from male members of
25:44david newton's family in order to demonstrate that only he was present at the murder scene
25:50good morning my name is graham mcmillan this is andy mckay we're investigators of the police
25:55major crime unit in huntingdon if it's okay with you can we come in to explain because there's a bit
25:59of
25:59stone i've got and there's an ass from from us you probably won't ever get a visit like this again
26:04it's about a distant relative and a murder of an old lady in whiz beach hello i'm a detective with
26:10cambridge please that is david leslie newton your brother yeah yeah i confirm that david leslie newton
26:20is my brother brother you confirmed that david leslie newton is your first cousin is that right
26:34yeah the david newton is your uncle that's right so you say it's your dad's brother's son so your
26:50male relatives who carry the same ystr profile as he does to establish where they were at the time
26:58okay so up and down and then backwards and forwards traveling around the country the team have
27:05interviewed and obtained dna to rule them out do you recall ever having met in the crown
27:13no do you know whether you visited magazine lane in whiz beach it's got nothing to hide which only then
27:21points to that male dna being david newton's
27:41he obviously was interviewed back in 2013 a number of times any sort of variation from that story
27:49is going to look really suspicious once we present him with the dna findings is he going to suggest he
27:54was actually there that weekend could he sort of say well you know i didn't remember that at the
27:58particular time because i didn't think it was relevant i don't think he's got a choice but to go
28:08down that route he said in his initial interview that he hadn't been in yuna's bungalow for eight
28:15or nine months he's going to have to try and tailor the accounts if he can remember them from back
28:20then
28:21to fit the narrative of why his dna would be underneath her fingers obviously if he does
28:28provide an explanation as to why his dna might be there then we're obviously going to have to revisit
28:33everything revisit the scene anything that we can do to to refute that and if we can't then cps
28:39going to have to see if it's actually a plausible excuse yeah
28:45the options that david has in interview are really narrowed for him now and if he goes
28:54what we call no comment i don't think it puts our case at risk at all his initial account from
29:002013
29:02is still valid he said he hadn't been in yuna's bungalow for around eight or nine months
29:08dna doesn't last that long so it had to have been within the time period of her death
29:16he is going to need to account for his dna's presence at the scene
29:22should we start everybody okay yeah okay
29:28okay so this interview is being recorded and it may be given an evidence if your case is brought to
29:34a trial we're in an interview room at thoughtwood police station this interview is being remote
29:39monitored you're here because you've been arrested on suspicion of murder of yuna crown on the morning
29:46of the 13th january 2013 yuna was found dead in her home by members of her family who had planned
29:53to take her out for lunch yuna had been stabbed and her body set on fire he was previously arrested
30:01and interviewed in 2013 and i know that's quite an ask and quite a task to go back 11 years
30:08and ask you
30:09to give us an account of what you did in an eight-hour window but if you're involved in the
30:14murder of yuna
30:15that's something i would imagine you're going to know
30:20so you stated back in 2013 that you did not murder yuna and today been arrested on fresh evidence
30:28coming to light there's a picture of yuna 86 years old at the time of her murder is that how
30:36you
30:36remember you remember yuna crown no coming
30:42what you really want to know david when was the last time that you saw yuna and when was the
30:51last time
30:52he was in her bungalow as you were aware your brother is currently at the police station we've just
31:07got some questions in relation to yourself has david ever spoken to you about what happened no did he
31:16ever mention una to you no we don't have nothing to do with him anyway so yeah okay so have
31:25you ever
31:25discussed una's murder with david no at all no we don't speak never out god never will do i won't
31:33trust
31:34whatever comes out of his mouth he's an evil bastard and nothing he's doing
31:54david newton is being held in custody on suspicion of murder
31:58while his male relatives are eliminated as suspects after giving their dna to police
32:08i can't actually completely switch off and say nothing to anybody i won't even talk to myself
32:20i could just it's just like switching the switch off
32:27you had long enough david yeah yeah happy to carry on yes okay let's begin
32:40david tell me in as much detail as possible
32:44everything you did on the day that you know was murdered
32:49saturday the 12th of january 2013. no coming we have a timeline david of movements on the 12th
32:58of january i'll go through what's written on the timeline and you tell me if there's anything
33:02incorrect 10 o'clock in the morning david walks the dog at 13 44 so quarter to two in the
33:10afternoon
33:11cctv shows newton at the ex-servicemen's club wearing a green jacket and light colored trousers
33:20at 1541 so a couple of hours later newton leaves the club
33:27at 1753 that's when you call aunt connie right that's recording now okay at 1825 you then call her again
33:38i was already for bed i laid on here and he rang up and said i'll be over it take
33:44about 15 minutes
33:46and i said no way do you remember phoning her i don't know i can't remember yeah she told you
33:53that she had a sore elbow or problem with her elbow i can't remember that and then she said that
33:59you
33:59said sir well i've got some special oil for that i can be there in 15 minutes and she said
34:05that you
34:05were keen to come round and she said she didn't feel comfortable with that the way you were saying it
34:10yeah i can't remember you know some of the phones speak to her network i can't remember saying anything
34:16like that but in the past she said that you've said to her that you like her a lot and
34:21that she
34:21looks like marilyn munro do you find her attractive she's attractive you said that you've always had
34:30your suspicions that he was yeah always had but even my daughter said you can't say anything mom you
34:35can't prove anything else i've just got that feeling and i think it's because i knew he's got a
34:40foul temper we might have done me in might we never know we're going to go through some accounts
34:53that we've got from from witnesses around 7 45 7 50 in the evening they saw a male headed in
35:04the
35:04direction of magazine lane was that you just before you went to murder yuna crown jackie
35:20she lived at magazine close she gave a statement to say at half past eight the night of yuna's murder
35:28she just got back from shopping and you fell over bags of shopping in the pavement
35:35can you just go through what you remember of the night i've got four bags of shopping so i've
35:40put them on the path yeah yeah yeah i took two in and i'm done the door and then i'll
35:46as well
35:46there'll be a couple of minutes yeah like that and then i've gone back out and he was just what
35:49he's
35:49going to just walk past them picking up my shopping so it was a bit bit strange yeah yeah
35:55she said you appeared drunk was that erratic behavior day down to the fact that you had just
36:04come from yuna's bungalow having murdered her in a drunken state maybe looking around
36:13does anybody see me is anybody looking can i get home undetected and before you know it
36:20you've tripped over a load of shopping in the middle of the footpath she said you'd come from
36:26the direction of yuna's house and you was heading in the direction of your house why did you go to
36:33yuna's
36:35to watch her getting undressed to spy on her
36:41what did she catch you doing that night what caused you to lose control
36:55you've been lying to us for 11 years you said in 2013 you haven't had any form
37:06of contact with yuna since april 2012 when you fix that back door
37:16fingernail clippings were taken from unicrayon's right hand
37:25found a male y chromosome dna hit under her fingernails
37:36means that there's been physical contact
37:44that dna cannot have been there more than two days the scientist says the major contributor
37:54for the dna found under yuna's fingernails was that of david newton or a close paternal male relative
38:05since you've been in custody david we've spoken to
38:09a number of people from your male lineage eight people have all given statements today
38:19to say that on 12th of january 2013 they were not in the vicinity of unicrown's bungalow
38:29the only person we know from the male lineage of the newton family who was seen
38:37literally 25 meters away from yuna's property was you you're uncomfortable now mate
38:45and that was at half past eight on the night she was murdered
38:50we've now got your dna david
38:55we've now got your dna under her fingernails and you have not given
39:03any account as to how it got there your dna has been found under you and his fingernails that's because
39:16you killed her isn't it david you killed you in crown
39:22no comment you stabbed her multiple times in the chest and then you slit her throat three times
39:31why did you do that to that 86 year old woman look at her picture david why did you do
39:36that to her
39:39what did she do to deserve that level of brutality she was an old frail lady
39:51you've spent 11 years keeping this secret holding on to this secret
39:58but you thought you'd murdered you in a crown and got away with it
40:10there's a look of resignation on the face down okay the time is 16 55 and the interview is complete
40:23you're done mate you're done
40:28we don't give up we have continued throughout all these years and the team have worked so hard
40:37i hope to get it over the line as a cps charge
40:43all right how rattled was he he certainly scrubbed it down wasn't he yeah he got very
40:50digital he didn't mean it so you're on to cps then yeah yeah hi yeah we just finished the interview
40:57um yeah no comment to it so and it's been put to him so yeah no no it's been put
41:04to him
41:04the evidence has been cut to him with the dna and he's got no comment
41:13so brilliant all right thank you cheers bye good brilliant yes you better ring mr moore
41:34hi dan see you babe awesome result dan well done bye charge
41:50do you think he's expecting this or hello david great so um the officers have got a decision from
42:02the crown prosecution service tonight okay so david um you're charged with the following offences so on
42:0812th of january 2013 at whiz beach in the county of cambridgeshire murdered unicrown contrary to common law
42:24quite emotional actually you live and breathe these cases for a long time
42:31so finally got justice for the victim this is 11 years worth of waiting but definitely one of my
42:39proudest days in policing without a shadow of a doubt i'll second that we can go straight to the house
42:46now
42:50good evening try to disturb you late at night do you want to sit down we had arrested somebody this
42:59morning for union's murder um and the cps have just given us authority to charge that person that was
43:10murder um the name of the person is david newton did he live down by arm he did
43:26i appreciate that's a lot to take in it's been tough really yeah i'm just so relieved
43:35yeah it's taken some time but then i say you know 11 years is a long time isn't it it
43:40is a long time
43:41yeah i've said it time again i'll never rest but hopefully i'll give you some rest
43:47oh for auntie's sake yeah bless her what a relief
44:03yeah i got some news for you bert david newton's just been found guilty of the murder of unicrown
44:12we knew he was lying we knew it was him we knew everything else in the in the locality the
44:19fires
44:19the inappropriate we knew it was him yeah amazing amazing
44:25this statement's made on behalf of the family of unicrown in 2013 we heard how our auntie una had
44:33passed away we heard it was murder and our world stopped an elderly widow feeling warm and safe in
44:40her own home since her untimely and savage death three close family relatives have suddenly passed
44:47away not knowing her killer has been brought to justice we'd like to thank all who have helped us
44:53get to this point and we can now carry on with our lives knowing justice has been done
44:58it's really important for the force to be able to write the wrongs of the past everybody is aware
45:03of the mistakes that were made every case brings about some learning and this is no different and
45:08there were changes in terms of how sudden deaths are approached in terms of who attends how assessments
45:14are made i'm hoping for the family it will provide closure this was a horrific crime on an innocent
45:21old lady and the impact on the family is unimaginable really and the fact that nobody was brought to
45:27justice for such a long time will have exacerbated that impact as well there will hopefully be a
45:33sense of relief that we've managed to bring somebody to justice and allow them to to continue their
45:38grieving process and hopefully bring some healing
