05:48So I heard that this idea came from a fear of being blackmailed by organized crime, which I think is
05:53irrational
05:54I think first of all, I don't think people think enough
05:58About the potential of being blackmailed into organized crime. I I mean, I've been talking about the show and people
06:05are like, well, that seems random
06:07Is it it could happen to any of us? Oh my I just happened to write about it the research
06:12I did on
06:14People who have been blackmailed into organized crime if you knew the things I know
06:19You'd also be terrified
06:21I have a friend that's em and I think it's irrational
06:23But she is terrified of being put in prison for something. She didn't do that's like a big thing for
06:27her are we sure she didn't do it
06:30So wait this give us a bit
06:31I already know a bit of the the premise episodes in but tell everybody kind of what it's about
06:36So basically, it's a brother and sister who make a very small mistake that turns into a very big mistake
06:42and
06:42They don't know at the time that what they're doing will eventually lead them to being
06:47Blackmailed into a life of organized crime
06:51Comedy ensues thrills ensue and it's basically asking the question of yeah, that's me on a yacht
06:57You can see how uncomfortable never been on one and will never be on one after but it's it's like
07:02It asks the question of the audience. What would any of us do if we found ourselves into in this
07:09situation?
07:10I would be instantly killed
07:13I'm just telling you I can figure my way out until I could figure out
07:16I've got to run and change my name and do all the things I can do it
07:19You distract enough before the passport of the fake passport comes through and then you're on a plane
07:24And then I'm gone. I get it. Tell everybody about your character because your character has quite the yeah, I
07:30play a
07:30Straight from the pulpit
07:32I play a pastor
07:34Why are we laughing?
07:37What's funny about that? I play a pastor who finds himself roped into this criminal situation and obviously not a
07:44great job to have
07:45When the crime is knocking on your door and I'm also a a gay pastor who is a non-practicing
07:53Gay pastor, which is a thing in certain line was your partner going. I would like to practice. I would
07:58like to practice a lot
08:00his my character finds a boyfriend and
08:04Has to hide him away from the church because he's been practicing and he's not supposed to be practicing
08:08So it opens up this conversation, which is crazy. I know but I never wanted faith or religion to ever
08:15be the butt of the joke
08:15So we hired a gay pastor to read through every script to make sure that none of it was at
08:22the expense of religion or faith
08:24And I actually found the process of learning
08:26Yeah about what it is to be a gay person in the church
08:32To be so fascinating and faith. I'm a spiritual person. I'm not really a religious person
08:37Yeah, but to play someone that has like a steadfast commitment and faith to a congregation and a belief system.
08:44It was really kind of enlightening and
08:47um
08:48Heartwarming. Yeah, um, do you think you're more like Nikki or David from Schitt's Creek? Which one? Wow
08:53I actually don't think I am like David in any way. I mean, yeah
08:57He's a very judgmental person and wears all of his emotions on his sleeve. Yeah, I can't barriers or no
09:04I'm just kidding
09:05We're so good. Yeah, I do have some I have barriers
09:07Do you bury them?
09:08Um, no, I think to play someone that really didn't care whether I just judged you for something you said
09:15or something you said
09:16Yeah, like it's actually kind of liberating. Yeah, how free is that?
09:19But naturally I care about what everyone thinks. I think they're called narcissists

09:22Yeah, I care too much and Nikki my character is far more cautious
09:26So I think it was a more natural

09:29World to explore than David who just like really would give you side eye for anything

14:48And taking the time to really think about characters

14:52There's this impulse to just get pen to paper
14:55And start writing dialogue
14:56But if you don't know
14:57If you haven't spent the time on your characters
15:00You won't have anything to write down the line

15:02So I really learned
15:04Like, invest in the time it takes
15:06To flesh out a character that's interesting
15:08That gives you a long life
15:10That an actor will want to come in and play
15:12Yeah
15:13And
15:13That has depth, yeah
15:14That has depth
15:15And when Rachel Sennett and I
15:17Uh, got down to writing the first episode of the show
15:19I heard you wrote it in like one day
15:21We wrote it in a day

15:22We wrote the first draft in a day
15:24And we had pre-planned a lot of it
15:26We're both very organized
