00:01And welcome to September. The Dodgers and Pirates kicking off a three-game series and the Dodgers will hand the
00:06ball to number 22.
00:08Clayton Kershaw on the heels of a sensational August will make his first turn in the month of September
00:13and try and get this Dodgers six-game road trip started off on the right foot.
00:17The Dodgers need to start getting it done more against teams with losing records.
00:22Herman Majinski, second straight start, his 12th overall this season.
00:26Two outs for Freddie Freeman. Two hits in three games against Arizona. Both of them doubles.
00:32Now 36 on the year, tied for the most in the National League.
00:35Behind the left field coming on Pham. And that is, Bob, on cue. Very efficient.
00:41It's Clayton Kershaw. Start number 18 this year. He's already at 3.06. He's won each of his last five
00:47turns.
00:48And Jared Triolo will lead it off for the Pirates against Clayton Kershaw.
00:52That's this in there to pretty deep left center field and back toward the track and to the deepest part
00:58of the yard.
00:59A double. Triolo, indeed, has responded to playing every day and leading off with a double.
01:05Ground rule double and then back-to-back walks.
01:07And the Pirates have loaded the bases here in the first with nobody out.
01:12Will Smith goes out to meet with Kershaw.
01:14You really are just looking to turn this into a one-run situation.
01:19And Clayton is a ground ball machine, so I'm sure the middle of the infield is going to play double
01:23play depth.
01:2354 plate appearances. 159 average against the lefties' fastball.
01:29Now the nomadic veteran Tommy Pham. Bases loaded, no outs.
01:33Pham pops this up toward the line and right field.
01:36And a fair ball! And it gets past Hernandez!
01:39Pham into second! A two-run double!
01:432-0 Pirates!
01:45Tommy Pham entered tonight 1 for 20 with 7 strikeouts in his career against Clayton Kershaw.
01:51McCutcheon at the plate.
01:53Oh!
01:55Back to Kershaw and McCutcheon reaches and we'll see if that got all glove.
02:00Certainly a scare on the Dodger bench and that's an RBI single for McCutcheon.
02:06It is 3-0.
02:06And really there was no chance for him to make the play.
02:09The infield was too far back to be able to come in and make the play either.
02:13First five Pirates have reached base safely to start the game.
02:17Now it's Alexander Canario.
02:20It's been a while since we've seen Clayton Kershaw labor like this.
02:23Fly ball right field.
02:24Hernandez toward the line.
02:25Makes the catch.
02:26Tagging at third is Pham.
02:28He will score.
02:29A sacrifice fly.
02:30The Dodger deficit grows to four.
02:32Nick York making his 2025 Major League debut.
02:36Payoff.
02:36York to left field.
02:38Coming in.
02:39And Conforto can't make the catch.
02:41A sinking line drive.
02:42And another two-strike base runner for Pittsburgh in this first inning.
02:45Approaching 30 pitches.
02:47He welcomes the number eight hitter, Henry Davis, to the batter's box.
02:51Grounded to third.
02:52Freeland has it.
02:53To second for one.
02:54The turn.
02:55That's two.
02:56And that is a godsend for Clayton Kershaw to get him out of the first inning.
03:00But four runs for the Pirates in an early lead for Pittsburgh.
03:03Well, the Dodgers have two hits in this inning.
03:05Well, they both came in extended plate appearances for Smith and Hernandez.
03:09And the Dodgers have set up shot first and second.
03:11Nobody out.
03:12Load them up.
03:13Nobody out in the second.
03:14And maybe the Dodgers' hottest hitter at the plate, Andy Pajes.
03:17Another one just like that, except at somebody.
03:20First run and get a double play.
03:22Get a couple outs.
03:23There's one.
03:25Two.
03:26And the Dodgers do get a run.
03:28You've got to get Alex Freeland.
03:29Swing and a miss.
03:30Struck him out.
03:31Went with the splitter.
03:33First strikeout tonight.
03:34Comes on the 11th pitch of the at-bat.
03:37Dodgers had the base loaded.
03:38Nobody out.
03:39They get one.
03:39And now here comes 22-year-old right-hander Bubba Chandler.
03:43Here's a fun matchup.
03:45Bubba Chandler against Shohei Ohtani.
03:47Ohtani has scored 124 runs this season.
03:50No left-hander has gotten a hit off of him yet.
03:533-1.
03:54A rocket to right field.
03:55This ball is gone.
03:58That is home run number 100 as a Dodger for Shohei Ohtani.
04:03And it got out in a blink in the bird.
04:07And the Dodgers have another run on the board.
04:09It's 4-2.
04:09That was an absolute laser beam.
04:12And this is 25 miles an hour off the bat harder than a hard hit ball.
04:17Two on, two outs.
04:18And Teoscar Hernandez who singled off of Majinski.
04:21That swing on line to right field at base hit.
04:23Freddie's going to get waved around third.
04:25He'll come in to score.
04:26Rounding second and on his way to third is Smith.
04:29And the Dodgers have made it a run closer.
04:31It's 4-3.
04:32One away for Pittsburgh in the bottom of the third.
04:35Here is Andrew McCutcheon with that line drive bullet back to Kershaw.
04:39Hit off his glove for an RBI single.
04:42And Kershaw beats McCutcheon for his first strikeout.
04:45Oh, yes, sir.
04:48It's a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts for Clayton Kershaw.
04:53And that is career strikeout 3,028.
04:57Andy Pajas leading things off.
04:59Bottom of the order for the Dodgers in the top of the fourth inning.
05:01Trailing Pittsburgh 4-3.
05:03And Pajas swings and drills one deep to left center field.
05:06Toward the notch.
05:07It is headed back.
05:08It is gone.
05:09A home run.
05:10Andy Pajas gets right back to pounding Pittsburgh.
05:13And he ties the game with a solo home run.
05:16This is the Dodgers' ninth hard hit ball against the Pirates' two.
05:22Getting ready for the bottom of the fifth.
05:23The Dodgers tied with the Pittsburgh 4-4.
05:25The Pirates started the game 4-4 with two walks and a sacrifice fly.
05:29Since then, they are 0-10.
05:30He has thrown the ball now the way he did in August.
05:34Clayton Kershaw with more walks tonight than he had all of last month.
05:38If he gets out of this inning under 85 pitches or right at 85,
05:42the reason you're taking him out is all the work that he had to do in the first.
05:46And right back to Kershaw.
05:48And he got it.
05:49How?
05:50One, he's alive.
05:52Two, he's out of the inning.
05:54Clayton Kershaw, who gutted his way through five innings, gave up four runs in the first,
05:59threw 35 pitches in that one inning alone, finished five full with just those four runs allowed.
06:05And it really was the type of outing that most pitchers melt down mentally from what happened in the first.
06:11He responded in a Kershaw manner.
06:14Edgardo Enriquez is now pitching.
06:16A 3-2 from Edgardo Enriquez.
06:18So he's come out of the bullpen in a tie game and walked the first two men.
06:22And trouble is brewing now in the sixth inning.
06:25So first and third with one out.
06:26And Henry Davis will bat.
06:29And he goes the other way.
06:30And there it is.
06:31A base hit to give the Pirates the lead on an 0-2 pitch.
06:35A hundred two miles an hour.
06:38And finally, Henry Davis delivers for the man in scoring position.
06:42Five to four.
06:43Blake trying to get to try and clean up a sixth inning mess.
06:46Here's Jared Triolo.
06:48Left center field.
06:50And that will get down and split Conforto and Pius.
06:53And that's going to score two.
06:55Jared Triolo brings home a pair with his second double of the night.
07:00Gives the Buccos a 7-4 lead.
07:03Isaac Mattson.
07:04Dodgers have gotten the leadoff hitter on a little over 50% of the time.
07:08Four out of seven innings.
07:10And Otani swings.
07:11Bouts it to the gap in left center field.
07:13That ball is going to get down.
07:14Tommy Pham will play it on a hop.
07:16And with nobody out, the Dodgers have runners at second and third.
07:20It's the 18th double of the season for Shohei.
07:23Tying run to the plate in the form of Mookie Betts.
07:26The Dodgers down 7-4 in the seventh.
07:28Betts chops one to the left side.
07:30Rojas is going to score.
07:31Ohtani gets to third.
07:33The RBI ground out for Mookie.
07:35The Dodgers within two.
07:36Freddie Freeman 0-3.
07:38So the batting average below 300.
07:40But hearing chance of Freddie.
07:42Back to Mattson.
07:43Knocks it down.
07:44And he's got Ohtani caught between home and third.
07:49And the tag is made.
07:51They get Ohtani.
07:52He was indecisive.
07:54And had he kept on going to the plate, he would have scored.
07:57If the pitcher doesn't knock it down, it's up to the middle for a base hit.
08:01That is a tough call for him as a base runner.
08:04That is very gray when you're over there.
08:07Two outs, Will Smith, the batter.
08:097-5, Pittsburgh leading.
08:10Oh, Mattson almost got him.
08:14Foul tip, but in and out of Henry Davis' mitt.
08:17Going to go right back at him again.
08:20Foul tip.
08:21Henry Davis is saying that went off the bat of Will Smith and into the glove.
08:25Nick Lentz is saying it was not a foul ball.
08:27Donnie Kelly coming out to back up his backstop.
08:30And Donnie is still talking with Nick Lentz.
08:32And he's showing him there must be a mark on the ball.
08:34He's saying that's a new ball, brand new ball in the game.
08:38And he's showing them that there is a mark on that ball that came off that bat.
08:43Big time foul tip.
08:45And Kelly's going to keep the baseball and he fires it down the dugout.
08:49Will Smith remains in the batter's box.
08:51Will Smith, ground ball, base hit.
08:54Freddie Freeman scores back to a one-run game.
08:57Will Smith didn't get one life, didn't get two, took advantage of number three.
09:03What a break and what an advantage.
09:06Should have been a strikeout and a final out.
09:09Instead, it's an RBI single to make it a one-run game.
09:13Anthony Bonda inherits runners on first and second.
09:16One out in the bottom of the seven.
09:18Trying to keep the Dodgers within one.
09:20First pitch all the way to the backstop.
09:22Now two runners in scoring position.
09:25Bouncer left side.
09:26Betts in the glove.
09:28Goes to first.
09:29And thought about coming home.
09:30Instead, Pham is allowed to score and it's 8-6.
09:35Dodgers running out of outs.
09:37And they are trailing Pittsburgh 8-6.
09:40Kirby Yates.
09:41That is another walk issued by the Dodgers tonight.
09:45Nick Gonzalez walked twice against Kershaw tonight.
09:48Swing and a ball lined into center.
09:51Coming on.
09:51Paez.
09:52He slides.
09:52Can't get it.
09:53Popped off his glove.
09:54Triolo is in to score.
09:55And the Pirates have a 9-6 lead over the Dodgers.
09:59Back in Pittsburgh.
10:00The Dodgers behind the Pirates.
10:029-6.
10:04Spite out hitting them by three.
10:06They trail by three.
10:07It is a four-pitch leadoff walk.
10:10That is the start the Dodgers were looking for in the ninth.
10:14Speed on the bases now has Sung Kim.
10:161-1 to Shohei.
10:18Ohtani turns it around.
10:20Left center field.
10:22Cruz on the warning track.
10:24Can't come up with a catch.
10:26Ohtani drives in a run.
10:28The Dodgers are within two.
10:30Shohei hit it a long way.
10:32And it's probably a home run in a lot of different parks.
10:34But this is a very odd route by Cruz.
10:39I mean he is going back coasting, coasting.
10:42Now he's got to make a sharp turn to get to it.
10:44And he's only within about three feet of that ball.
10:48But he probably gave up a good 15 feet with the route and the lack of speed.
10:53And the Dodgers are down to their final out.
10:56The right guy in the right spot now with Will Smith.
10:58He had the walk-off home run on Sunday.
11:00He's got three hits tonight.
11:01The third one came on a second life on a foul tip that he should have been out on with
11:06a third strike.
11:07But he turned it into a base hit and an RBI.
11:11Reynolds is there!
11:13Raise the jolly roger!
11:15The Pirates defeat the defending World Series champions in the first of a three-game series.
11:21Once again, the Dodgers come out of an off day facing a team with a losing record.
11:27And once again, they come up short.
