Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Brunei’s Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah signed a joint statement committing to avoid unjustified energy and food trade restrictions stemming from the Iran war.

The agreement was signed in Bandar Seri Begawan on Wednesday (April 15).

00:10signed a joint statement committing to avoid unjustified energy and food trade restrictions
00:16stemming from the Iran war.
00:18The agreement was signed in Bondar-Siri-Begawan on Wednesday.
00:22Brunei supplies 9% of Australia's diesel imports
00:26and 11% of its fertilizer-grade urea imports.
00:32What's guaranteed is that they are not looking at imposing export restrictions on Australia.
00:40And as we go forward, of course, in today's uncertain world,
00:46there are pressures on all of the economies in the region.
00:51But what Australia has done is to not only do we speak today about existing supplies coming,
01:00we spoke about additional supplies as well.
01:03And so the work will continue between our High Commission here
01:07and between...
01:09I have the Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet here as well
01:14and talking with their counterparts in the Brunei government
01:19about ways in which we can secure additional supplies, particularly fertiliser,
01:27in return for, of course, it goes back to Brunei as food.
01:32That's the benefit that we have here.
01:34Albanese plans to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday
01:41to shore up Australian supplies of gasoline and diesel.
01:45Malaysia is Australia's third-largest source of refined fuel
01:48and supplies 10% of its fertiliser-grade urea imports,
01:52while Australia supplies 95% of Malaysia's imported natural gas.
