In the premiere episode of The "Methods" Podcast, hosts Bowen Saylor and Sebastian Chen interview Richard Blank, CEO of Costa Rica's Call Center. The discussion centers on the intersection of communication, culture, and soft skills within the business world.
Key Themes & Insights
Soft Skills as a Cultural Foundation: Blank emphasizes that strong companies are built on authentic cultures where soft skills—such as active listening, empathy, and tone of voice—are prioritized over aggressive sales tactics.
The "Phonetic" Approach: He discusses using "phonetic micro-expression reading" and matching a client's pitch and mood to build rapport and ensure meaningful interactions.
Gamification in the Workplace: A unique aspect of Blank's leadership is his use of his massive collection of restored American Pinball machines and antique Jukeboxes to foster a fun, engaging corporate culture that drives employee ownership and reduces attrition.
Personal Journey: The episode traces Blank's path from Philadelphia to Costa Rica at age 27, where he eventually founded his own BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) company by choosing authenticity and education.
Practical Communication Tactics
During his various appearances, including this podcast, Blank often shares specific "methods" for professional communication:
Vocabulary Swaps: Replacing "help" with "assist" or "guide" to establish a more professional partnership.
Clarification Phrases: Using "for my clarification..." instead of "what?" or "excuse me?" to handle background noise or confusion gracefully.
The Military Alphabet: Utilizing the military alphabet to ensure accuracy in spelling and show a high level of professional preparation.

00:00I do. I most certainly do. I think your audience shouldn't be so hard on themselves.
00:05Yeah. Things take time. And so I think that you should give yourself first downs
00:12over touchdowns because you just get 10 first downs. It's still a touchdown. You just got to
00:17grind it. And you'll get long runs every now and again. But really, it's about that persistence,
00:26endurance. There's a lot of naysayers and great believers out there. And these are the
00:31individuals that just don't know this mission that you're on. Now, be responsible with your
00:35family, your children, and your finances. But in my opinion, 80 hours is full-time work.
00:44So I don't have to work 40 hours. It can retire as a young man. And so if you're capable
00:50of handling
00:51a full-time job, but putting that extra load on you, when the time does come for that contract
00:59and for that responsibility, you're prepared for it. And so these are the sort of things,
01:06these are the game plans that you do prior to your success. So you're used to it. It's not pretending
01:15and it's not fake it till you make it. You are you. But it just so happens you're at that
01:22stage.
