00:05now this takes things to a whole new level dinner parties at your house just became the hottest
00:11reservation in town
00:34i'm sarah gore and welcome to open house nyc everyone you are gonna love what we have in
00:39store for you this week and i am bringing it all to you from the former west village home
00:43of author and activist jane jacobs whose work changed the way we think about cities
00:49originally built in the early 1840s this special home effortlessly marries historic charm with
00:55modern everyday style the loft like living space is anchored by two original wood-burning
01:02fireplaces it's the kind of room that just invites you to get comfortable settle in the
01:09eat-in kitchen bathed in natural light offers garden views and upstairs you'll find two
01:14bedrooms including a dreamy primary and just beyond that a private terrace that feels like
01:20a tree house we are getting started with designer and media personality genevieve gorder at her
01:26own dramatic duplex penthouse in chelsea see how she worked within the confines of the 1850s building
01:33to combine two units and create a stylish home for her family that feels personalized charming and
01:41always surprising inside or out enjoy hi my name is genevieve gorder i'm an interior designer and
01:54television personality and you are in my home in chelsea new york it is two brownstones from 1863
02:04connected i love classic new york pre-war and then i like to mix it with
02:11global collections that i pick up on all of my travels so let's take a look
02:19so you are in my kitchen it's kind of the first thing you see when you walk in
02:23i wanted to bring as much light in here as possible by opening up that back window
02:28as well as bringing light cabinetry all the way to the ceiling because why not and i brought in a
02:35light
02:35colored stone and has these gold veins that i just love so i just covered the whole kitchen in stone
02:44my range is super important and i love her and she can do everything it's like go go gadget you
02:50know
02:50when you're entertaining in this house everyone wants to be literally on you in the kitchen so i've
02:57created kind of a runway the floors they're hand done they're a french white oak one of my favorite
03:05favorite things about the house
03:11so moving from the kitchen runway we go into the dining room this is all one
03:17long space i wanted to open up the light as much as possible we have a block long garden in
03:24our
03:24backyard so it's really really quiet which is also a really special detail of being on those top two
03:32floors you get the most nature the dining table this is something my husband made he is a furniture
03:39designer which comes in really handy this is an astrological pendant you can see the band has
03:45all the signs circulating around it and it's something if i ever leave this house this comes with me
03:52the mirror a vintage piece and then i built two built-ins flanking the fireplace to just house
03:59neutral little pretties this is a cantilever steel staircase that we designed under the stairway
04:06is a family photograph this is after the norwegian side just moved to minnesota and they are just having
04:13a big old party in the field with champagne but i like that kind of memorabilia around me all the
04:19time
04:20i'm that person in the family i'm the collector
04:26my husband and i chose to come upstairs because we wanted to basically sleep in the garden this is an
04:33oasis of sleep and nature it's basically all bad so we have some verticality on the headboard i've
04:41brought in an old tapestry that i really love to give it some textures and then we have little
04:45sprinklings of furniture that my husband made because they're weird nooks and crannies that you can't buy
04:50off the shelf oh yes the bathtub there's something really sweet about hopping out of the bath into your
04:59bed like they're doing this in hotel rooms now so i'm just gonna say i am ahead of my time
05:09so our front two decks are mostly for entertaining barbecue dining outdoors lounging under the pergola
05:16and then the lawn side we use for pets as well as big movie nights with bean bags we also
05:22have all the
05:23views out here and because chelsea is historically landmarked nothing's too tall you can see all the
05:29rooftops on the north side we have two more roof terraces these are quieter we have a block long
05:35garden with fully matured trees and it's just more for the family and hanging out by yourself or just
05:44quietly this is by far my favorite place in the whole house to be
05:52interior design is always about making everything as beautiful as you possibly can
05:57but equally important to me as a designer is making it highly livable and i definitely have expressed
06:03that in my home and i'm ready for the next chapter thanks for the tour genevieve coming up next we
06:12are
06:12invited into the new home of author and designer michelle welch don't go anywhere
06:25welcome back everyone now we're with interior designer and author michelle welch see how he
06:30reimagined this cozy retreat with a nod to his favorite english countryside escapes enjoy
06:41hi i'm interior designer michelle welch and i'm also a new author and welcome to welch manor the
06:46inspiration behind the design all started from a trip to the english countryside i got obsessed with
06:54the cotswolds you're going to see lots of lush english inspired greenery throughout the space let's go check
07:01out the inside so now we're in my living room this is just like a quintessential english style tudor
07:10cottage as i was designing the space i wanted to also play into that it's important for me
07:18to make the home and the pieces tell the same story so there are a lot of antiques in this
07:24space you know
07:25of course i'm known for collecting objects from italy and france and i brought and incorporated a lot
07:31of those pieces into the design so now that you've seen my living area let's check out the space where
07:36i probably spend the second most amount of time in the house that's the dining room
07:46so now we're in my dining room which has become one of my favorite spaces in the house
07:51i love it because i have this really dramatic mural wallpaper again it's channeling that english
07:58countryside vibe that's just like iconic with any design that you're going to see out in the cotswolds
08:04the mix that i always say is for every vintage piece there needs to be a modern piece and i'm
08:10so
08:10in love with these new dining chairs i just love the curvature that it has here in the wood i
08:16love my dining
08:19room welcome to my bedroom i wanted to kind of play homage to that traditional old school lifestyle so i
08:28went with the traditional steel bed as you can see here i wanted the drapery to be the star of
08:34the show
08:35in this room and i just love how it adds an extra layer the other area where i probably spend
08:40a little
08:40more time would be my desk area and then at the end of the day i finally get to rest
08:46and go outside
08:47to the backyard because that is where i like to relax one of the biggest inspirations that i keep
08:57talking about is the cotswolds out in england so the cotswolds is kind of like a storybook town
09:03and i wanted to bring that storybook feel here to los angeles when i designed the space one of the
09:09things that i kind of brought back from my trips were the love of herbs and vegetables when you're
09:16at many of the restaurants you will see a lot of the vegetables and herbs right there on the table
09:21and so i wanted to bring that here and i actually cook with these herbs every single night
09:26it doesn't stop there my friends i decided to get a little unconventional here this is where i do literally
09:35spend every morning before i get ready to go to work when i have parties i'll fill the bathtub with
09:41ice and
09:42then i'll actually lay all the drinks here so that it just gives a more theatrical moment but i'm telling
09:47you these tubs there's so much that you can do with them outside of actually just sitting in the bathtub
09:52and this is why i love my outdoor area all right friends well i think you have seen every nook
10:01and cranny
10:02at welch manor i hope you enjoyed it until next time take care

14:01350
14:01west broadway combines the best of loft and penthouse living in one of new york city's best neighborhoods
14:08i'll see you next time coming up just after the break star agent steve gold shows us how it's the
14:16little things that make a big statement we'll be right back
14:28welcome back everyone now star agent steve gold has brokered some of the city's
14:32most talked about deals on camera and off but nothing meant more than creating a bespoke home
14:39for his family in soho take a look hey i'm steve gold and welcome to my penthouse loft in the
14:47heart
14:47of soho when i bought this loft it looked nothing like this the same owner lived here for over 25
14:53years
14:53and i was coming in with my new young family i wanted to bring it up to today's luxury standards
14:58without compromising what makes loft living so special so let's go take a look at exactly what i did
15:09the elevator opens directly into the loft and you enter into this expansive great room immediately
15:15you notice one of the best characteristics of this loft incredible light you've got a western
15:22exposure northern exposure and two of the home's five skylights you also notice the original details
15:27like cast iron and wood columns and the original ceiling beams that frame the living and dining areas
15:33i also am in love with these floors these floors are old growth oak from denmark they had to be
15:41brought in through the windows because they're 16 inch wide and up to 20 feet in length the beauty
15:46of the grain the intricate butterfly joints these floors are work of art in and of themselves
15:55loft living is all about wide open spaces but you want each area to be defined and have its own
16:02vibe
16:03i designed this place for my family but also for entertaining i've hosted over a hundred people
16:09in this great room while my daughter slept down the hall we kept all the furniture low profile so we
16:14didn't obstruct the sight lines from each area i wrapped the walls in venetian plaster giving it a
16:19slight sheen and lots of texture it's also a great backdrop for anyone's art collection including my own
16:26the architectural details continue in the cool curves i brought to the windows as well as the shadow
16:32reveal that i brought to the floor which makes the walls appear to float so why don't we float over
16:37to the kitchen i took great care in choosing the materials for this home this 12-foot island is made
16:45from calicutta paonazzo stone you'll notice the curved edges of the countertop which echo the architectural
16:50details of the window we integrated the cooktop into the stone not the easiest for fabrication and
16:56installation but definitely the best for looks and to be honest it's incredibly functional as well
17:02the stone continues up the backsplash we match the veining even these bocce outlets are integrated
17:09into the stone these are the design details i love custom cabinetry both hides the appliances and
17:16provides plenty of storage and just off the kitchen is a windowed home office which i consider lucky
17:21because i've made quite a few deals there the private wing has three ensuite bedrooms all pin drop
17:27quiet but follow me into the primary i designed our bedroom to be cinematic and luxurious like the hotel
17:39room of your dreams it faces east so we get beautiful morning light and two walk-in closets flank the
17:46king
17:46size bed which in my home makes everyone happy you'll notice we preserved the original columns and beams
17:52and at one end of the room is a comfortable seating area for two at the other end a free
17:57-standing claw
17:58foot bathtub i'm a huge fan of functional statement pieces and nothing makes a statement quite like this
18:08so that's it my dream new york city loft i hope you enjoyed viewing it as much as i enjoyed
18:13designing it
18:14and living it until next time coming up take an ultra modern condo but make it a tree house we'll
18:24be
18:24right back don't go anyways we're going to show you after the break
18:36welcome back everyone now we're at one of the more unique homes you'll ever see architect andrew hyde
18:42created something of a legend in the west village and it's dubbed the urban tree house oh a treat
18:48see why
18:53growing up in oregon nature was a huge inspiration for me to become an architect and i also feel that
18:59there's so much nature missing in our modern life i'm andrew hyde i'm the founding principal of no
19:04architecture based in new york city welcome to the urban tree house here in the west village come on in
19:09and i'll show you around as soon as you walk in you realize that this is not the modernist white
19:17box
19:18that the rest of this building looks like this is a very different palette of materials it's
19:23very organic it's very warm it's very muted it's very natural off of the main entry space is this
19:29pantry area where we continue the use of natural materials like the exposed concrete the stone the
19:34wood and a sense of compression before we enter into the main double height living space
19:43this is the release this is the wow factor this is why we call it the urban tree house
19:47in every direction you see windows and your eye goes out to the natural landscape and the river and
19:52the horizon beyond because of this dramatic scale from the outside these tree houses look like a public
19:58work of art and the original concept was for a much more enclosed structure we realized we had to
20:03make something much more transparent and light and hence the netting became really important for
20:07that like a giant piece of furniture the tree houses are meant to be sat on slept on interacted with
20:14in
20:14a very active dynamic way the clients love to entertain here have people jump up and down on the nets
20:19and to enjoy the whole city space through these 22 foot glass windows
20:27under the second tree house is a dining space that is then connected to the main kitchen for the dining
20:32area
20:33we wanted something very intimate i chose this aeroseren and dining table surrounded by danish morgens
20:38and chairs because of the lightness of the structure and the cantilevered quality they bring
20:42surrounding this dining table are these large concrete fiber reinforced planters that create
20:48this relationship between the trees on the outside and the trees on the inside after all what is a tree
20:53house without trees
21:00the urban tree house for me is a really important project because it represents the spiritual harmony
21:05between architecture and nature i hope you enjoy taking a look at this dream project of mine thanks so much
