00:05This family is obsessed with basketball, so you know I have to do something extra special in the basement.
00:10Next stop, the NBA.
00:14Bang, bang.
00:35I'm Sarah Gore and you're watching Open House NYC, everyone.
00:39This week, distinguished design, delightful decor, and delicious dining.
00:44And I am bringing it all to you from this duplex on the Upper West Side.
00:48At nearly 4,500 square feet, this home is a perfect blend of pre-war grandeur and modern refinement.
00:56It showcases soaring ceilings, white oak herringbone floors, and beautiful treetop views that make Roosevelt Park and the American Museum
01:05of Natural History feel like part of the decor.
01:09From the front door, you step into an inviting great room anchored by a marble fireplace and flooded with natural
01:16light through oversized windows.
01:17The kitchen features Carrera marble countertops, a matching backsplash, and custom cabinetry, a place any home cook would love.
01:27There are five bedrooms in all, including a serene primary suite.
01:31This is a home that effortlessly combines livability with luxury.
01:36Now, we are getting started at this 25-foot-wide townhouse in the heart of Cobble Hill, Brooklyn.
01:41Originally built in the mid-1800s, it's been completely reimagined as a bright entertainer's dream, with floor-to-ceiling windows,
01:51walls of glass, and innovative tiered living spaces that feel both dramatic and welcoming.
01:58Enjoy.
02:04I'm Lindsay Barton Barrett, and we're here at 205 Clinton Street in the heart of Cobble Hill, one of Brooklyn's
02:10best neighborhoods.
02:11This house is incredible.
02:13It is the best of innovative modern design and historic architectural detail.
02:19There is so much to see.
02:21Let's go inside.
02:24The minute you step in, you will be in awe of the scale, light, and refinement.
02:31This space is dedicated to entertaining.
02:33You have a lovely living room, dining area, flowing down into this exquisite, dramatic kitchen.
02:41This stylishly-appointed living room is filled with vintage pieces.
02:45You have exquisite stained glass, this dramatic pyramid, and a marble mantel.
02:51And through these double-height windows, you have a view to the tree-lined street outside.
03:00Creating a space like this is quite an accomplishment.
03:04This atrium is 30 feet tall floor-to-ceiling.
03:08Every great party ends in the kitchen.
03:10And this one was designed with that in mind.
03:13It's all centered around this oversized island with beautiful Calicotta gold marble countertops, custom walnut cabinetry, beautiful breakfast nook, and
03:23seating for everybody.
03:25Everything you can imagine in your dream kitchen is right here.
03:29And now, let me show you something that's beyond your imagination.
03:34What's the best summer party?
03:36It's a barbecue in your own private backyard.
03:39And this one has everything you could want.
03:42A built-in grill, this beautiful custom pergola, and a seating area big enough for all your friends.
03:49Who wants to see more of this beautiful house?
03:56Heading downstairs, you really appreciate the unique layout of this home.
04:00This level includes lovely seating area and a spacious home office, whereas the lowest level is configured as a great
04:08room.
04:09This room has 15-foot ceilings and plenty of space for your biggest, comfiest couch and beautiful work of art.
04:17And these oversized glass doors fill this room with light.
04:21And standing here, you can really appreciate the integration of the tiered living spaces in this home.
04:32On the second floor is this dramatic primary bedroom.
04:36It has its own private terrace and the most beautiful, well-appointed bathroom.
04:44The bedroom itself is pin-drop quiet.
04:48It's so elegant with beautiful custom moldings and flooded with light overlooking the garden outside.
04:58On the fourth floor, there are three spacious bedrooms, two beautiful bathrooms.
05:03But what I'm going to show you next is probably my favorite space in this house.
05:10Welcome to your very own clubhouse, where, yet again, you see what this home is all about.
05:17This space is configured as a sitting room and a dining room.
05:20You have incredible light from this huge skylight, and you have doors that open up more than 12 feet, creating
05:28complete integration between the indoor and out.
05:32And the terrace up front.
05:34Wait, let me just show it to you.
05:39I love this space.
05:40You can sit outside and relax in front of the fire or head upstairs for some of the best views
05:46in town.
05:52This house is so unique.
05:54It combines historic charm and modern architectural design.
05:58And if you liked what you saw, maybe you should consider taking a look in person.
06:06I'm currently planning in my head the party that I want to throw there.
06:09That is so fun.
06:10All right, coming up, a Hampton-style home in New Jersey.
06:23Welcome back, everyone.
06:24And now we're with interior designer Ariella Horowitz at one of her newest projects, this Hampton-style home in Wayne,
06:31New Jersey.
06:32It features sunny, entertaining spaces, dramatic decor, and plenty of fun surprises.
06:38Let's take a look.
06:42Hey, guys, I'm interior designer Ariella Horowitz, and I'm super excited to share with you this beautiful Hampton-style home
06:50in Wayne, New Jersey that we meticulously designed from top to bottom, inside and out.
06:55Let's take a look.
07:00The spectacular design begins with this grand double-height foyer.
07:04We added this wall paneling to bring a classic touch to an otherwise contemporary aesthetic, which underlines the attention to
07:11detail that I bring to all of my projects.
07:13We sourced and selected this huge chandelier and the runner that dresses up the sweeping staircase.
07:19Coming down this would make anyone feel like a star.
07:23You'll definitely be ready for your close-up.
07:28Off the foyer, we have the dining room, the family room, and this dramatic formal living room.
07:33For the walls and the trim, I chose this beautiful deep blue-gray color.
07:37I contrasted it with light Roman shades, this lucite coffee table, and these cream-colored linen chairs.
07:44But no living room is complete without the perfect sofa, and I went with this velvet one with polished nickel
07:49eggs.
07:50This is just a great space to sip a spicy margarita, tickle the ivories, and gossip with friends.
07:59I think you'll agree that even for open house, the scale of this family room is truly jaw-dropping, with
08:06these 20-foot-high white oak coffered ceilings.
08:08But I also needed to make it feel warm and welcoming.
08:11I did that by bringing in this plush, oversized, comfortable sofa and a pair of boucle side chairs.
08:18I custom-designed this limestone fireplace mantle and these handsome two-tone built-ins.
08:23In another unexpected twist, the wine cellar is visible from the family room, through this iron-framed glass wall.
08:32Oh, and speaking of glass, this wall of accordion glass doors opens up to the patio and grounds for seamless
08:39indoor and outdoor entertaining.
08:44I designed the outdoors so that every day feels like a holiday for my clients.
08:48The patio has zones for dining and reclining.
08:51The pool deck has an outdoor kitchen and bar, and the covered portico features a fireplace.
08:57A great place to sit after a refreshing dip in the pool, which on a sunny day like today, sounds
09:03perfect.
09:05But there's no time for a swim.
09:06There's more house to see.
09:08Follow me.
09:12We've seen a ton of two-tone kitchens, so I opted for three-tones, and I think it works beautifully.
09:18I mixed the white perimeter cabinets with the white oak showstopper hood and hutch units, and painted the island navy
09:25blue.
09:26I selected durable quartzite for the countertops, and an onyx mosaic backsplash for texture and visual interest.
09:33After all, this kitchen is open to the family room, so it had to be both functional and stylish.
09:43This family is obsessed with basketball, so you know I had to do something extra special in the basement, beginning
09:49with the goat, Jordan.
09:52The basement also includes a full gym, a bar.
09:58There's even a salon.
10:00Oh, did I mention the basketball court?
10:03This two-story basketball court is always a crowd-pleaser.
10:07Next stop, the NBA.
10:15Bang, bang.
10:20The primary is, of course, one of my favorite rooms in the house.
10:24I use all neutrals with different shades of white that add texture and interest.
10:29And these boucle lucite chairs are perfect and unexpected.
10:33Just a great place to sit by the fire.
10:35I custom-designed it in black Nero Markina, and it's one of my favorites ever.
10:40And who doesn't love a canopy bed?
10:42They wanted luxury, and that's exactly what I gave.
10:51The greatest pleasure I get from design is seeing a home come to life, and this home is full of
10:56life.
10:57That's why it's one of my favorites.
10:58It was a pleasure showing you around, and hopefully I'll see you on the next one.
11:05Don't worry, Ariella.
11:06I would have missed every shot, too.
11:08Coming up just after the break, we're with this Brooklyn chef.
11:12Don't go anywhere.
11:21Welcome back, everyone.
11:22Now we're in Bushwick, Brooklyn, with executive chef Jackie Carnisi.
11:26She gives us a glimpse into both the cozy Bushwick apartment she calls home, and the iconic Williamsburg spot she
11:33runs, Kellogg's Diner.
11:35Enjoy.
11:39Hi, I'm Jackie Carnisi.
11:41I'm the chef at Kellogg's Diner.
11:42We're here at my home in Bushwick.
11:44Come on in.
11:47So first thing you see when you walk in is our gallery wall.
11:50It's my son's art.
11:53As opposed to just putting his stuff on the fridge, I wanted to give him a whole space that kind
11:57of celebrated his cute little pieces of art.
12:00And then behind me, I have this framed tile work that my mom got in Turkey.
12:05I didn't go on that trip.
12:06I wasn't invited.
12:07But here it is, and I love it.
12:09I also hung a painting of my childhood home in the hallway.
12:12I'm a very sentimental person, which is why it was important for me to put all this stuff in my
12:17house, and it's a nice reminder of my hometown.
12:19Come with me into the dining room.
12:24I've recently inherited a few pieces of family furniture, including this desk back here, which belonged to my great-aunt
12:32Dolly, these really fun, velvety, tassely chairs that I got from my grandma Dorothy, and then this Japanese panel that
12:42hung up in my childhood home.
12:43So I guess my design aesthetic can be described as eclectic, but mostly driven by nostalgia, and this room really
12:50makes me feel warm and loved.
12:54So for my room, I really wanted a space of serenity, so I tried to fill it with a lot
13:00of earth tones, this, like, clay orange, you know, the brown in the cowhide.
13:05My bedroom is filled with nostalgia.
13:07This quilt belonged to my mom.
13:09The print of the Chinese horses hung above my bed as a kid, and then the drawing is the only
13:16successful piece of art I made in college.
13:20So it's right around lunchtime.
13:22I'm getting pretty hungry, and I want to eat something before I had to work, so let's head to the
13:26kitchen.
13:32It's a pretty standard New York City kitchen.
13:34It does have some pluses, though.
13:36It's got a lot of storage, ample natural light, a cozy little dining nook.
13:40I'm going to make a somewhat Mexican version of a Turkish dish called eggs chill beer.
13:47I grew up in Texas, and the cuisine down there is predominantly Mexican food.
13:51That has definitely influenced my cooking and, you know, how I think about food and my usage of herbs and
13:59chilies and acid and heat and everything.
14:02So traditionally, this dish is made with poached eggs over seasoned yogurt and then spices fried in butter and, like,
14:09poured over the top of the eggs.
14:10But I don't like poached eggs, and I do whatever I want in my kitchen, so I did it with
14:14fried eggs.
14:18In true chef's fashion, I'm going to eat this quickly and standing up, but then I've got to head out
14:22to work.
14:39In my career, I think one of the universal aspects of a restaurant is that it attracts a certain type
14:44of person.
14:44And somebody who's, like, creative and kind of thrives on chaos.
14:48I think Kellogg's is, like, a big beacon of light in the neighborhood.
14:52You know, it's always lit up in the middle of the night, and you come in, it's, like, everything's a
14:57nice dusty rose color, lots of warm light.
14:59And we've got big plush booths, big tables so you can order a ton of food.
15:04It's just a very inviting space.
15:09But now you've seen my home, where I work, and my commute, so it's time for me to get started
15:14with my day.
15:19Ooh, I just love a good diner.
15:21Thanks for the tour, Jackie.
15:22Coming up after the break, we are in L.A. with this design duo.
15:35Welcome back, everyone.
15:36Now we're in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles with this design duo.
15:40See how they expanded the footprint of this craftsman-style home,
15:44turning a series of cramped spaces into a chic, airy, European-inspired home.
15:51Take a look and enjoy.
15:56Hi, I'm Sepna.
15:58And I'm Karin.
15:58And we're Bungalow, a husband-wife design team.
16:01And welcome to our project here in Eagle Rock.
16:04This is our Eagle Rock craftsman with a ton of European influences that made it feel like our own.
16:10Let's start with the living room.
16:11I'm excited to show you around.
16:15This is what we're calling our great room.
16:18It's living and dining combined, and the footprint of the space just really leaned into being a grand, entertaining space.
16:24We have a built-in wet bar, as well as these amazing coffered ceilings.
16:30We also included this huge built-in that is both beautiful, brings the space together.
16:35Overall, the vibe of this room is meant to be warm and cozy, welcoming for your guests, and just truly
16:42a place to gather and feel at one with the people that you love most.
16:50At the top of the stairs, you're welcomed with a lobby lounge moment, and that brings you into this beautiful,
16:55versatile space.
16:56And my favorite part about this space is it's whatever you want it to be.
17:00It can be a bedroom.
17:01It can be a film room.
17:02It can be an office.
17:04But the moodiness is what I love the most.
17:06And no space is complete without fresh air and natural light.
17:10And we brought that in with this Juliette balcony.
17:12And we continue that natural light all the way down to the bedroom.
17:15So let's go check out the primary.
17:19I know Garen mentioned that the upstairs was his favorite room, but this room is special.
17:25The primary has so much beautiful, natural light coming in with views directly of your backyard and your pool.
17:32One of my favorite design moments of this bedroom is this cutie little settee that's placed right below this window.
17:39And if you'll notice, this window is set up slightly higher than the one next to it.
17:43And these little details and design can drive me nuts.
17:46But the way that we've placed this settee really intentionally underneath it just makes it feel very bespoke.
17:58Thank you guys so much for coming by.
18:00We really enjoyed walking you through our Eagle Rock Craftsman.
18:04And we hope to see you at the next one.
18:10Coming up just after the break, this Art Deco-inspired apartment.
18:24Welcome back, everyone.
18:25Now we're in Midtown East at the impressive duplex of film producer Dorothy Berwin.
18:30Located in a late 1920s building, this apartment has been completely transformed,
18:35preserving its original Art Deco charm while creating a warm, modern, and inviting home.
18:42See for yourself.
18:47Hi, I'm Dorothy Berwin.
18:49I'm a film producer.
18:50And this is my home, which I'm looking forward to sharing with you.
18:53And I am a Londoner, born and bred, but very happily transplanted to New York 22 years ago.
19:02So this is the entrance hall, and I placed this 1950s vintage green Italian sofa as a place where people
19:11could hang out
19:11because it's very enveloping, as you can see by the shape.
19:14One of my favorite rooms in the whole apartment is the bar.
19:18When you arrive, it's so easy to then stand here and just offer whoever comes in a drink.
19:28So when you walk into this room, the first thing you notice is the incredible ceiling height, which is something
19:33I've always loved in a home.
19:35And the fireplace, which to me was one of the essential elements.
19:38I was never going to have a home without a fireplace.
19:40But the thing that's really amazing as well, there was an extra bonus, are the windows.
19:45They are the original windows of this building from the 1930s.
19:49And then the mirrors.
19:51They're also from the original 1930s.
19:53This table is one of my absolute favorite things.
19:56When you look closely, it's got all these incredible blues and greens.
20:00It's so sensuous.
20:01This sofa is bigger than your average large sofa, but that's because this room can take it.
20:08It's a room which has such majesty and scale, and I covered it in a color that I just fell
20:13in love with.
20:13It's a burnt orange, which I found very warm and welcoming.
20:22This is the primary bedroom.
20:24The star of any bedroom is, of course, the bed.
20:27It's very high, so it's quite funny because I'm not that tall.
20:30So climbing onto it is always a fun adventure.
20:32And then the headboard I love.
20:34It's very simple, and it relates to the curtains.
20:36It's a very simple room.
20:38This is a vintage desk, and it's made of leather and a very interesting metal.
20:44I love it.
20:44So I love the bathroom because it's the first time I've ever lived in New York with a window in
20:50the bathroom.
20:51And the stone is complex and rich, and it reminds me of old, beautiful bathrooms in London hotels.
21:05Thank you so much for joining me today.
21:08I have loved every minute of designing this apartment.
21:11It's been such an incredible labor of love, and I'm really honored to have shared it with you.
21:18That's all for this week.
21:20We hope you enjoyed these tours today.
21:22Don't forget, we'll be back next week with more homes and design inspiration.
21:25It's endless.
21:26But if you can't wait that long, please check us out on our YouTube channel and our Instagram page,
21:31at OpenHouseTV, where we're adding new stuff all the time just for you.
21:35Thank you so much for watching, and we will see you next week.
21:40All right.
