00:02The Mid-Atlantic Ridge runs for 10,000 kilometers along the center of the Atlantic Ocean.

00:09Most of this mountain chain is hidden beneath thousands of meters of water,

00:14marked occasionally by tiny islands where isolated volcanoes break the surface.

00:21But there is a place where the whole ridge lies above the waves and reveals the inner workings of our

00:28planet.

00:30Iceland.

00:34Here we can see the whole structure of the ridge.

00:41Iceland is a young landscape, only 17 million years old.

00:47Sitting on a hot spot, magma rises up from deep within the earth, pushing the whole ridge above the surface.

01:01Evidence of that heat is everywhere.

01:16On Iceland, we can see that the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is not a simple mountain chain, but two parallel rows

01:23of mountains, separated by a deep rift valley.

01:27The junction between the North American plate and the European plate.

01:34The two plates are moving apart, stretching the floor of the rift valley, forming cracks.
