00:04It's a shark on shark battle and the little guys are escaping a predator by
00:08heading towards the beach. Florida Atlantic University captured adult
00:12blacktip sharks swimming into shallow waters to escape 12-foot-long hammerheads.
00:17They recorded the chase three separate times, all in waist-deep water about 150
00:22feet off Florida's southeast coast. Many young sharks grow up in shallow waters
00:27to avoid predators, but this drone footage is the first to show large adult sharks
00:32using the shallows to flee predators. Researchers watch as hammerheads struggle
00:36to keep up with the blacktips in shallow waters. They say its large dorsal and
00:41caudal fin usually propels the shark forward at fast speeds, but with their
00:45fins breaching the surface in the shallow waters, hammerheads can't be the
00:49locomotive force they usually are. The low waters don't inhibit the blacktips, their
00:53smaller size helps them effectively maneuver away. The study was published in the
00:58journal Fish Biology.
