UN spokesperson urges respect for navigation rights in Hormuz

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres calls on "all parties" to respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, after Iran and subsequently the United States blocked flows through the critical waterway, according to a statement from his spokesman. During his press briefing, Stephane Dujarric also announces that the Zikim crossing in the north of the Gaza Strip has been opened for the first time in 40 days.

00:00The Secretary General stresses that all parties to this conflict must respect freedom of navigation,
00:06including in the Strait of Hormuz, in line with international law.
00:11We need to remember that some 20,000 seafarers have been caught up in this conflict
00:16and are currently stranded on ships, with hardships increasing daily.
00:22Disruptions in the maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz have already had a direct impact
00:27well beyond the immediate region, with increased global economic fragility and insecurity in many sectors.
00:34Given the deeply rooted differences, an agreement cannot be reached overnight,
00:38and the Secretary General calls on the talks to continue constructively in order for an agreement to be reached.
00:45At the same time, the ceasefire must absolutely be respected, and all violations must cease.
00:52In the territory, our colleagues at the Office of the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs tell us
00:57that Israeli authorities have reopened the Zikkim crossing in northern Gaza for the first time in more than 40 days.
01:05Supplies were already offloaded there over the weekend, and UN cargo collection inside Gaza resumed earlier today.
01:11This will help address a critical need by allowing supplies to enter northern Gaza directly,
01:17so we don't have to truck them from the south.
01:19But major constraints remain.
01:21These include Israeli requirements related to custom clearance, which is often delayed,
01:26insufficient scanning capacity, which makes it difficult to secure approval for critical items,
01:31and blanket bans on specific UN agencies and NGO partners that are central.
