00:00The Little Mother of Kokiri Village. By Yumei.
00:04I'll show Mido. He'll never call me a coward again.
00:08Link swaggered as he followed the path Mido had given him to navigate the Lost Woods.
00:12After a fierce argument with Mido about whether Link would ever be granted a fairy companion,
00:18Mido had dared Link to find Old Scrub, the reclusive tree man who lived in the Lost Woods.
00:23Link's mission was to steal one of Old Scrub's Deku sticks as proof he'd been there,
00:28toss a Deku nut at the back of Old Scrub's head, and make it back to Kokiri Village unscathed.
00:35Initially, Link refused to listen to Mido, remembering that Saria had warned him and
00:40the other Kokiri to stay away from the Lost Woods unless she was there to guide them.
00:44Although all the Kokiri were children under the protection of the wise Deku tree,
00:49they all tended to see Saria as their big sister, especially Link,
00:53who had thought of her as something like his mother for as long as he could remember.
00:57He knew she wasn't really his mother. She couldn't be. She was only a few years older
01:03than he was. Link was sure he had once had a mother. But whenever he had asked about his
01:09mother and father, the other Kokiri had always told him, the great Deku tree is our father.
01:15Of all the Kokiri children, only Saria had ever confided that she remembered Link had once had a
01:21mother. When Link had asked what had happened to his mother, Saria had answered,
01:26I'm sorry Link, but she is lost.
01:30Lost. To be lost, was to be lost forever. Link knew he would never see his mother again.
01:36But he rarely dwelled on it. After all, the Kokiri all had Saria to take care of them,
01:43their little mother. Normally, Link would never dream of disobeying Saria. But, oh so slowly,
01:50yet oh so surely, Mido's cutting remarks had worn down Link's resolve.
01:55Link's cheeks burned as he remembered how Mido had flexed his arms, trying to make himself seem
02:01bigger than Link. You think the great Deku tree will ever give a fairy to a chicken like you?
02:06The great and powerful Mido would never hesitate to claim one of old Scrub's sticks as a prize.
02:11The great and powerful Mido loved to refer to the great and powerful Mido in the third person.
02:17Link clenched his teeth as he marched through the wild grass. If this was what Mido considered a test
02:23of courage, it was all too easy. Link had followed Mido's directions perfectly. Go north, turn west,
02:32turn south, turn west, and sure enough, there was old Scrub taking a nap right where Mido said he would
02:38be. With skin like tough tree bark and hair like foliage, the plump little creature was snoozing
02:44comfortably under his favorite tree, a snot bubble at the end of his round snout. Watching carefully
02:50from behind the thick grass, Link's anger at Mido faded, replaced by a sense of crushing guilt.
02:56Old Scrub had never done any harm to Link. But wasn't Mido right after all? Hadn't the great Deku tree
03:03himself told Link that he would not be granted a fairy until the time was right and Link was ready
03:08to show true courage? Link steeled himself. After all, stealing one stick and interrupting old Scrub's
03:16nap would do no harm, but it would prove to Mido once and for all that Link was no coward.
03:22Stepping on tiptoe, Link snuck towards the collection of carved staves of Deku wood resting against the
03:28trees behind the slumbering old Scrub. As Link pulled one free, the others tipped over, but Link
03:34caught them just before they could clatter to the forest floor. Exhaling with relief, Link made his
03:40way back to the thick grass, pulled a Deku nut from his pouch, and took aim. Not wanting to hurt
03:46old Scrub,
03:47Link tossed it half-heartedly so that it only bounced lightly off the back of his head. As old Scrub
03:53bounced to his feet with a high-pitched squeak, Link couldn't help but grin as he turned to rush
03:58down the hollow forest path from whence he came. All he had to do was reverse the directions Mido gave
04:04him, and... Behind him, Link heard a sharp pop, like a carpet beater being whipped across a rug.
04:11As he turned to look, he saw a projectile flying right towards him. With a hearty thwack. A heavy nut,
04:19several times larger than the one Link had thrown, struck Link across his back thigh,
04:24just below his left buttock. Link stumbled forward in shock, but at the sound of old Scrub's furious
04:30curses, the boy knew that he had to escape and scrambled to his feet. Dashing with all his might,
04:36so that his green cap fluttered behind him, Link looked back and caught a glimpse of the old Scrub
04:42stamping his spindly feet and shaking a bony fist. The old tree man couldn't keep up with the fleet-footed
04:48boy, but could spit nuts from his snout with explosive force. They struck with more strength
04:53and precision than any of the Kokiri children could ever have achieved, even with a slingshot.
04:59Link ducked and zigzagged through the trees to avoid the projectiles, until old Scrub was left far
05:05behind him. Link was safe. Pulling off his green cap and resting his hands on his trembling knees,
05:12he doubled over with stitches in his sides, half from the exertion and half from suppressed laughter.
05:17What an adventure! Running his fingers through his golden hair to wipe away the cold sweat from his
05:24brow, Link placed his cap back on his head and examined the stolen Deku stick that would prove
05:29his valor to Mido. Now, all he had to do was retrace his steps back to Kokiri Village. But as
05:37he
05:37examined his surroundings, Link realized he must have run well past the forest path in the mad rush to
05:43escape. No matter. I just need to go north, then east, then south. No, wait, it was south, then east,
05:52then north. As the sun dipped behind the trees, the sky above dimmed to a twilight blue.
06:00A wolf's howl echoed in the distance. Link had barely managed to find the path again before the sun set,
06:07so that a glimmer of moonlight peeked through the opening in the foliage above him. After second
06:13guessing himself and backtracking twice, Link had carefully repeated Mido's directions, until he'd
06:19worked out the correct path. He knew the rough direction of Kokiri Village, so as long as he stayed
06:24on the forest path, he knew he couldn't get lost in the dense, untamed parts of the woods. Even after
06:31his
06:31eyes adjusted to the dim light, Link still had to rely on his sense of touch, taking only one step
06:37at a
06:37time and feeling the ground below him to assure himself he was still on the well-trodden path.
06:42But then, he encountered something he didn't expect, a fork in the road, one leading south,
06:48the other west. Link considered his situation. He knew Kokiri Village was in a general southerly direction,
06:55but he was also positive he'd wandered too far east earlier. Straining his ears, Link caught a strange
07:02sound, a haunting melody played on a flute? And it was coming from the west path. Using the stolen staff
07:10like a blind man's walking stick, Link grinned as he made his way west. He'd been tempted to cry out
07:16for
07:16help until the other Kokiri found him, but at the thought of the teasing he'd face from Mido, Link had
07:22resolved to use his wits and not give up. His chest swelled as he imagined telling Saria how he had
07:28navigated the woods all by himself. To his surprise, Link noticed a faint glowing on the path ahead.
07:35Odd? He was sure he'd have to turn south at least once to find Kokiri Village, but what else could
07:42it
07:42be than torchlight? But as he approached, he saw the light had a cool, green hue, more like the steady
07:48glow of a firefly than the flickering of torches. The west path led into a clearing, dominated by an
07:55ancient, fallen tree, which could have rivalled the great Deku tree if only it was still alive.
08:00Its stump, easily six feet in diameter, acted as the old tree's only gravestone.
08:07Link gripped his staff, trembling. He had no memory of this part of the Lost Woods. As he blinked back
08:15tears, Link noticed something sitting on the tree stump he hadn't seen before. A childlike form,
08:21like one of his fellow Kokiri, playing a flute? Link cried out a hail to the child, but tripped as
08:27he
08:28approached, landing in the mud and leaves of the forest floor with a wet slap. At the sound of Link
08:33stumbling, the child's head snapped up from its music. Link dimly registered that there was something
08:39odd about the child's face, and examined its clothing, brown leathery rags decorated with green,
08:45leafy trim. Unlike the knitted, green caps of the Kokiri, its hat was floppy, crowned with a tuft of
08:52ragged strips, and its wide brim covered its face in shadow. Link froze as the child fixed him with
08:59shining red eyes. No, the hat didn't cover the child's face. The child had no face at all.
09:06Nevertheless, the faceless child seemed to cock its head at the sight of Link.
09:11Are you lost? Though its voice was high-pitched, Link was sure it was a boy's voice. Link spat a
09:18leaf
09:18from his lips as he lifted himself up and held his staff firmly in front of him, ready to fight
09:23if need
09:24be. No. I'm not lost. I'm from the Kokiri village. I know the way back. I just took a wrong
09:32turn,
09:32I think. The faceless child seemed to shiver. That's a pity. I was hoping we could be friends.
09:39You have a kind face. Link relaxed his fighting pose. Thank you. You have, uh, red eyes. Are you
09:47friends with any of the Kokiri? The shadowy head wagged back and forth. No. I have to stay in the
09:54woods. But I'd like to have a friend. Who are you? The faceless child seemed to pause to consider the
10:01question. I don't think I have a name. But I'm a kid, like you. Link scratched his head,
10:08giggling at the thought of the kid forgetting his own name. Well, kid, I'll be your friend.
10:13I'll come visit you tomorrow when the sun is up. I might have a fairy guide of my own by
10:18then.
10:19Say, do you know the path I should take to get back to Kokiri village?
10:23The faceless child nodded, slowly. Link tightened his grip on his staff. Can you show me the way home?
10:30The faceless child nodded, furiously, then leapt from its stump and darted south, waving to Link.
10:37Follow me, friend. With a whoop of triumph, Link chased after his new friend,
10:43feeling a few twigs brush past his face as he hurried to keep up. Slow down, kid. I can't keep
10:49up.
10:50The faceless child's eyes seemed to leave a trail of red light behind them as he twisted around to
10:55shout in reply. We must hurry, we must fly. The sun will be up soon. Remembering Mido's dare,
11:03and how much trouble he would be in if Saria discovered he'd disobeyed her, Link sprinted to
11:08keep up with his guide, ignoring the twigs and brambles that snatched at his clothing and scraped
11:13against his bare legs. The glow of the clearing faded behind them, until they were enveloped in blackness.
11:20Only when a sharp branch scratched his left cheek did Link finally halt. Ouch. Wait,
11:26kid. I can't see anything. I know. Well, quit running. If you take my hand.
11:33The red eyes appeared again. You don't have to run anymore. This is far enough.
11:39Link felt his face burning as he realized they had lost the path.
11:43Wait, where are we? You said you were taking me home.
11:47This is my home.
11:49No, my home is Kokiri Village. You said.
11:53I said I knew the way to Kokiri Village. I did not say I was taking you to Kokiri Village.
11:58I said I would show you the way home. Now we are home. Now we can be friends.
12:04Link froze, suddenly cold. What are you talking about? You got us lost.
12:10The red eyes twisted in mid-air, as if the faceless child was craning his neck curiously.
12:16I was already lost. I got lost a long, long time ago. Now I can't leave the forest. Now you're
12:23lost too.
12:24Link lunged toward the eyes, trying to grasp the kid by the arm or wrist, but there was only shadow.
12:30Link crashed into sharp branches that cut into his tunic and pulled his hat from his head.
12:36The red eyes blinked twice, then vanished into blackness.
12:40Don't worry, I'll come back to find you. Then we can be friends forever.
12:46Stupidly, Link cried out to the faceless child, but no answer came. Then Link screamed for help from
12:52the Great Deku Tree, from all the Kokiri children, and most of all from Saria. He screamed until his voice
12:59went hoarse, and finally huddled on the ground, weeping, until he lacked the strength even to weep.
13:06As his tears faded, Link felt an oppressive silence, as profound as the darkness. There was no rustling
13:13of leaves in the wind, no sound of animal life. There was only nothing.
13:18I am lost. I'm lost forever and ever now, thought Link, and even his last thought seemed to be swallowed
13:25up.
13:28Then, he heard a faint song. Link sat up, his head cracking against a branch above him.
13:34Yee-ouch. As he rubbed his throbbing skull, Link wondered if the faceless child had returned to
13:40taunt him with more flute music. But as he listened closer, it wasn't the same song as before, nor was
13:47it the sound of a flute. It was an ocarina. Saria. Link leapt to his feet, using the Deku staff
13:54to
13:54stumble blindly through the darkness towards the joyful music. Then, he caught a pinprick of light behind a
14:00leaf, which seemed blinding after the long hours of darkness, and dove towards it. Link crashed to
14:07the soft ground of the forest path, the stolen staff clattering to the ground in front of him,
14:12right in front of Saria. The last note she played was a sharp whistle of surprise, in sharp contrast to
14:19her song. Link! You found me! Her voice cracked and she smiled at the ridiculous sound of her own words.
14:26I called her name till I lost my voice. Then I played my ocarina. Link wept fresh tears as he
14:32buried his face in Saria's chest. I knew you'd come for me. Saria returned the embrace, patting him
14:39tenderly on the head, then coughed. Her voice still wavered awkwardly, but there was nothing laughable
14:45about the look on her face. Link, what were you thinking? You could have been lost forever. I was
14:51so worried about you. Link pulled away to look up at Saria, his eyes darting to the staff that he
14:57was
14:57supposed to bring to Mido. I'm sorry Saria. I just wanted to explore the lost woods and find- Oh,
15:03I know all about you pestering the old scrub. That's where I went first. Saria pinched Link firmly by the
15:10ear with her right hand, giving the ear a delicate twist before she snatched up the stolen Deku stick
15:16with her free hand. Link yelped and instinctively grasped at Saria's wrist with his left hand to
15:22relieve the pressure, but thankfully she didn't tug forcefully as she started to lead Link down the
15:27path home. You're lucky I found you Link. You know full while none of the Kokiri children are allowed to
15:33go near lost woods without me. I'm going to spank you as soon as we get home, young man. Link
15:39winced,
15:40fresh tears filling his eyes. Ow. But, Saria. I said I was sorry. Saria fixed Link with an all too
15:48familiar look. You're not nearly sorry enough. Not yet. Link's shoulders tensed as he struggled to keep
15:55pace with Saria's furious stride. It wouldn't be the first time little mother had taken him across her knee.
16:01The long forgotten guilt he'd felt yesterday when he'd harassed the old scrub suddenly returned with
16:07a vengeance. Yes, Saria. I promise I won't do it again. Are you going to take me to the old
16:14scrub
16:14so I can apologize? Saria's eyes flicked to meet Link's gaze once with some sympathy before she steeled
16:21herself and continued the furious march. Link felt her lighten the pressure of the pinch on his ear,
16:26though she didn't release it entirely. Well, that's a start. At least you know you owe him
16:32an apology. But not today. He'll be grouchy for a few days, and I'm sure you'll be more open to
16:39hearing your apologies after. Well, after you both had time to cool down. Anyway, I think you've spent
16:46more than enough time in the lost woods for one day. As he thought about what awaited him back home
16:51in
16:51Kokiri Village, Link wasn't so sure he wanted to leave the lost woods after all. But as he remembered
16:58the black, deathly silence of the lost woods, he felt the warmth that Saria's song had inspired in
17:03his heart again. He felt Saria's love for him, even as the little mother of Kokiri Village pinched his ear
17:10and led him home. End of part one. Spanx for listening. If you enjoy my spanking stories,
