00:00Hungary has a brand new leader, but who is he and why does it matter for Europe?
00:05Peter Madger has been elected prime minister,
00:08defeating long-term leader Viktor Orban in a dramatic political upset.
00:12His centre-right pro-European TISA party ended 16 years of Orban's rule.
00:18Madger is a 45-year-old lawyer from a well-known political family.
00:22He was once part of the Fidesz inner circle, even married to a former justice minister,
00:27but he broke away in 2024 after a major scandal involving his ex-wife pardoning an individual
00:33linked to a paedophile case. Later, following his divorce, he released a secret recording of his
00:39wife in which she described deleting sensitive lines from government documents. His campaign
00:45struck a nerve, touring rural Hungary with the slogan, now or never, he promised to tackle corruption,
00:52boost the economy, unlock EU funds and support disadvantaged communities.
00:57So what does this mean for Europe? In short, it's a big shift.
01:02Orban had become the EU's most disruptive leader, often clashing with Brussels and blocking key
01:07decisions. Madger is signalling a clear change of direction, which could make it easier for the EU
01:13to act together on major issues like sanctions, budgets and expansion. It also likely means stronger
01:19support for Ukraine. Orban frequently delayed EU action against Russia, so his departure and moves
01:25to one of Moscow's closest allies inside the bloc. More broadly, this could weaken the network of
01:31right-wing populist movements across Europe that Orban helped lead and politically shift the political
01:36balance in Central Europe. For the US, Viktor Orban was one of Donald Trump's closest allies in Europe,
01:43backing him openly and championing a similar nationalist anti-immigration agenda. With Orban out of power,
01:50Trump has lost one of his most prominent supporters on the European stage. But the big question
01:55remains, can Madger deliver? Despite his victory, Orban's allies still hold influence across Hungary's
02:01institutions. Undoing more than a decade of entrenched power won't be quick or easy.
