00:00:00What a freak!
00:00:01Oh my god!
00:00:02Oh, look at that!
00:00:04Absolutely phenomenal!
00:00:06Rooney up!
00:00:08Welcome to Match of the Dead.
00:00:50Good evening.
00:00:51Four games for you on tonight's Match of the Day, with consequences at the top and bottom
00:00:55of the table.
00:00:55We've also got March's goal of the month and the best of the action from yesterday.
00:00:59I'm joined in the studio by Pat Nevin and making his Match of the Day debut, Ben Foster.
00:01:04Welcome.
00:01:05So we begin with the title race.
00:01:07Arsenal's defeat against Bournemouth on Saturday gave Manchester City the chance to close the
00:01:11gap at the top of the table to six points as they travelled to Chelsea.
00:01:15Your commentator is Steve Wilson.
00:01:18A title race which seemed all but over now feels like it's very much back on.
00:01:24If Manchester City win all their remaining games, the worst they can do is finish level
00:01:30on points with Arsenal.
00:01:32Chelsea, who've lost three of the last four in the league, make two changes to the
00:01:36eleven which swept aside Port Vale in the Cup.
00:01:38Cucurella and Caicedo for Tosin and Lavia.
00:01:42No Enzo Fernandes, of course.
00:01:45Treble chasing City make one change from their Cup quarterfinal win over Liverpool.
00:01:49That's Donnarumma for Trafford in goal.
00:01:52Just one of their last six games has been in the league and their last Premier League win was in
00:01:57February.
00:01:59The last time Manchester City lost to Chelsea was the 2021 Champions League final.
00:02:07This could be a dress rehearsal for the 2026 FA Cup final.
00:02:13But more importantly today is that opportunity knocks for Manchester City again.
00:02:20There was a little gap there and Semenya has strolled through it before he's dispossessed neatly by Caicedo.
00:02:28Here's Palmer.
00:02:30Rodri chasing.
00:02:32Pedro Neto for Chelsea.
00:02:36Cole Palmer.
00:02:38Done well.
00:02:39Side netting from Palmer.
00:02:41That's a really good break from the home side.
00:02:45Nicely worked.
00:02:45Little mistake by Rodri.
00:02:46Palmer was onto it very quickly.
00:02:49And then found himself in a decent position in the penalty area.
00:02:53Just forced a little wider and to a more acute angle than he might have liked.
00:03:01Enzo Fernandes will be back from his two-game club imposed suspension for next week's match against Manchester United here.
00:03:14Here's Pedro Neto.
00:03:17João Pedro.
00:03:20Lively.
00:03:21And increasingly threatening.
00:03:23And here's Cucurella.
00:03:24Really good finish, but the flag's gone up.
00:03:29Well, Ian Hussein put his flag up the moment the ball went into the back of the net.
00:03:34It's quite tight, but he does look offside.
00:03:37And it is no goal.
00:03:41And here is the confirmation of the offside position from which Mark Cucurella scored.
00:03:51And Palmer for Chelsea.
00:03:53There's a collision involving Estevão and the referee, Chris Cavanaugh.
00:04:00Here's Pedro Neto for Chelsea.
00:04:03Chris Cavanaugh is sprinting to make up ground, having been felled.
00:04:08And Pedro Neto goes on and Donnarumma makes a good save.
00:04:14Donnarumma getting his big frame down really quickly.
00:04:17That's a very good stop.
00:04:20There's one of the greats, really, not just of this football club, but of European football champ Franco Zola.
00:04:28Can I say that?
00:04:31Palmer.
00:04:33Cassanoff waited his moment and then pounced to nick the ball away.
00:04:36And Rodri has given it back.
00:04:38Malo Gusto.
00:04:40And João Pedro!
00:04:41Well, he got in front of Mark Gehi there.
00:04:43It's an excellent little bit of movement.
00:04:45Just needed to get that left boot on the ball and Donnarumma would have been called into action.
00:04:51It hasn't been quite as thrilling a half an hour as you might have expected.
00:04:56O'Reilly keeps popping up in great positions.
00:05:00Haaland is sniffing.
00:05:01Sanchez made a really good stop.
00:05:03Nico O'Reilly into a super little spot again.
00:05:06Bernardo Silva did get something on it.
00:05:09Sanchez with the save and then the grasp.
00:05:20Semenyo looking for room for the shot.
00:05:22Now there's room and he hits it and hits it wide.
00:05:26Chelsea away is not an easy fixture, but it's one city really need to win if they are to apply
00:05:31yet more pressure on Arsenal.
00:05:33And pressure seems to be preying on Arsenal minds at the moment.
00:05:43Doku did well to get away from Ando Santos there.
00:05:46And he's found Haaland.
00:05:46His trouble.
00:05:47That was heading wide.
00:05:49Hato made the block.
00:05:51Malo Gusto away.
00:05:53Well, you just expected that ball to fizz past Sanchez into the back of the net.
00:05:59That shot wasn't actually even on target.
00:06:07Doku.
00:06:09Palmer.
00:06:15Referee Chris Kavanagh wasn't at all interested in this.
00:06:19Actually, Palmer's outstretched left leg here.
00:06:23Well, you'd say there's a strong case for City having a penalty.
00:06:29Turkey.
00:06:38Turkey's ball in and into the net from O'Reilly.
00:06:44Well, Manchester City have been more dangerous in the first five minutes of the second half than they were in
00:06:51the whole 45 of the first.
00:06:54And O'Reilly, whose goals won the League Cup, has headed them in front at Stamford Bridge.
00:07:00It's a lovely ball into the penalty area.
00:07:04And O'Reilly was completely lost by André Santos.
00:07:10Guardiola is the man with the knowledge.
00:07:13And Manchester City, the club, with the titles.
00:07:16Though it's Arsenal who are the side with the lead.
00:07:20It's going to be intriguing.
00:07:30Mancherky.
00:07:34Oh, great ball.
00:07:36Mark Gehi, 2-0.
00:07:39What a blistering start to the second half by Manchester City.
00:07:47Oh, great play on the edge of the penalty area.
00:07:50Oh, great play here.
00:07:52Turkey finding space and then a brilliant ball into Gehi.
00:07:55Who controls it and turns in one deft movement.
00:08:03And that's a really good finish.
00:08:07Didn't seem to be much between the two sides in the first 45 minutes.
00:08:12Chelsea have been overwhelmed in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
00:08:19João Pedro for Cucurela.
00:08:21A Chelsea goal would change the whole mood.
00:08:23And that's a great ball for Palmer.
00:08:25Well, this might have been a game changer.
00:08:28Really good block by Mark Gehi.
00:08:33Frank Lampard here today.
00:08:35Doing some advanced homework for Coventry's seemingly inevitable Premier League season ahead.
00:08:41They are a whisker away from confirming promotion back into the top flight.
00:08:47To someone for Semenho.
00:08:49Tied to whether he was on or off.
00:08:50The shot is comfortable for Sanchez.
00:08:56Caicedo's lost it to Doku.
00:08:583-0.
00:09:01That's a terrible goal to concede.
00:09:08Caicedo caught in possession.
00:09:11Doku makes it three.
00:09:13Manchester City a rampant second half.
00:09:17Chipping away at Arsenal's advantage in points and goal difference.
00:09:24Arsenal bottling it.
00:09:26He thinks so.
00:09:28Well, the first half was almost a non-event.
00:09:30The second half has been almost no contest.
00:09:34The storm clouds appear to be gathering over Stamford Bridge.
00:09:38It's going to be one league win in seven for Chelsea.
00:09:43Five defeats in nine.
00:09:48Cole Palmer.
00:09:52Cucurella!
00:09:52That wasn't far away.
00:09:57Decent hit by Cucurella, this.
00:10:09Decent hit by Cucurella, this.
00:10:15Cucurella!
00:10:15Cucurella being urged to shoot, and he did!
00:10:18He really got some fizz behind that.
00:10:22He's a long way out.
00:10:23And it's not that long a way wide.
00:10:33Alejandro Garnaccio.
00:10:37Lavia.
00:10:51Lavia dinked nicely to Cucurella.
00:10:53Donnarumma saves.
00:10:55Well, that is probably Chelsea's best moment of the second half.
00:10:59Beautifully down little one-two.
00:11:01He's definitely onside.
00:11:04But he's up against Donnarumma.
00:11:08It's a fairly straightforward save for the Italian in truth.
00:11:13Well, there is no London underground service to Stamford Bridge today, but if there were, they'd be saying mind the
00:11:19gap.
00:11:20And Arsenal will have to do that because if they're not careful soon, there will be no gap.
00:11:26Manchester City with an outstanding second half display.
00:11:30It's all set up for City-Arsenal next Sunday.
00:11:35It's felt for a few weeks now as though it's all coming down to this game next weekend.
00:11:41Do you feel that will ultimately decide who wins this title?
00:11:46I don't know.
00:11:46Of course, it's important because it's six points behind them.
00:11:51And if they beat us, it's over.
00:11:53If we draw, I would say two.
00:11:55Before the Caraba Cup final, we were underdogs.
00:11:57Nobody gave us a pound, you know, for us.
00:12:01And they have to be calm, they have to prepare because Arsenal is an extraordinary team.
00:12:08It feels a little bit like the same old story recently in our games where we have a setback and
00:12:13we don't recover from that.
00:12:14We need to find a solution to that.
00:12:17I need to find a solution to that as well.
00:12:19And a lot of that is mental stamina and emotional stability in difficult moments.
00:12:24But at the moment, I need to make sure the short time is good.
00:12:26And we have to focus on a really, really massive game against Manchester United next week.
00:12:30I do want to talk about your goal.
00:12:32It's a lovely ball into you from Ryan Cherky.
00:12:34But your control and turn in one movement gives the opportunity for you to tuck away that finish,
00:12:39which obviously is a very good goal.
00:12:41I'm fortunate to be playing with so many top players.
00:12:44With Ryan, you never know when the ball is going to come, so you just have to be ready.
00:12:48But yeah, I'm grateful, grateful to be in that position.
00:12:51And yeah, I did okay with the finish.
00:12:53And yeah, it was nice to get a goal today.
00:12:55You now seem to be hitting like really top four.
00:12:58Yeah, the team feel fresh and everybody's there.
00:13:02And yeah, we have a semi-final FA Cup in the five or six games remaining.
00:13:07So looks not many, but it's a lot.
00:13:11So many, many things I think is going to happen.
00:13:14Yeah, they look fresh, don't they?
00:13:15And it was a huge opportunity for City, knowing what had happened to Arsenal yesterday.
00:13:19But they didn't start the game hurried or kind of with any sense of urgency.
00:13:23They were happy just to let Chelsea have the ball.
00:13:25Yeah, they did.
00:13:26And I think that's a real skill in itself, just to be happy to soak up a little bit of
00:13:30pressure,
00:13:31let them dictate play.
00:13:32They did it for about 15, 20 minutes, Chelsea.
00:13:34They were arguably the better team.
00:13:36But then after that, Man City really did start to get a stranglehold of the game.
00:13:40But it was still 0-0 at half-time.
00:13:42So what changed in the second half?
00:13:43They carried on from that first 15 minutes, really.
00:13:45They just dominated the ball.
00:13:47They were happy to step up.
00:13:49You can see here, they're all camped on the halfway line.
00:13:51Real comfortable possession.
00:13:53And this was the story of the second half in general, really.
00:13:55Camped on the halfway line.
00:13:57Chelsea just happy to sit back.
00:13:59And mentally, I think Man City were the stronger team.
00:14:02They really were.
00:14:03They were dominating everything.
00:14:04And alarm bells should have started to ring here.
00:14:07You can see Nico O'Reilly just starting to saunter,
00:14:09making his way into the 18-yard box.
00:14:11There's no real pressure on the ball from Chelsea either.
00:14:13I think they could have got the ball in the box a couple of times there.
00:14:15They didn't.
00:14:15And when the ball finally does come into the box here,
00:14:18you can see Nico O'Reilly.
00:14:20He's there with Santos.
00:14:21And that is a complete mismatch.
00:14:23Haaland's taking two of the men.
00:14:24Man City have got the box fully ringed out.
00:14:26The ball comes in.
00:14:27And in the end, it's a comfortable finish for Nico O'Reilly.
00:14:31Sanchez, absolutely no chance.
00:14:32This part here, though, is what?
00:14:34It's a little bit worrying.
00:14:35It really is.
00:14:36If you're going to press as a team, you've got to push up.
00:14:38You've all got to do a job.
00:14:39You've all got to get up there and do it as a unit.
00:14:42Or you get back and defend.
00:14:43Watch Kuzinov here.
00:14:44He carries the ball unopposed.
00:14:46Nobody touches him.
00:14:47Nobody lays a glove on him.
00:14:48He gets into Chelsea's half.
00:14:49Simple ball over to the top.
00:14:51And on another day, Semenya puts that in the back of the night.
00:14:54He's got the quality to do that.
00:14:55Sanchez here trying to do it quickly.
00:14:57I think Caicedo, it's a good ball, you know.
00:14:58I don't blame the goalkeeper at all.
00:14:59It's a good ball.
00:15:00And if he can take it on the half turn and run away with it, it's fine.
00:15:03But the City's, look at them, they sniff it out.
00:15:06Oh, it's absolute green light.
00:15:07Go, go, go.
00:15:09And Doku, the lovely little finish into the corner.
00:15:11Simple goal for him.
00:15:12But this makes it 3-0.
00:15:13And it's game over at this point.
00:15:14It is game over in terms of the scoreline.
00:15:16But in terms of the relentlessness and the energy, 2-0, 3-0.
00:15:19They're still going for the game.
00:15:21They're not happy just to shut it down.
00:15:23Yeah.
00:15:23The other thing is I'd love to talk about Cherkis and Dokus and all the rest of it.
00:15:26But it's hard work as well.
00:15:28When you come to this time of the season, everyone has to put the work rate in.
00:15:31And it doesn't matter if it's 9, 10, 11, 12, whoever my players play at any point in the game.
00:15:37Haaland sets it off here that time.
00:15:39And it's not just him.
00:15:40Doku's right behind him.
00:15:41Silva's right behind as well.
00:15:43This is absolutely horrible to play against.
00:15:45Because you've not got a second on the ball.
00:15:47But when they get it, they're comfortable.
00:15:50Pass back here.
00:15:51You could have let that go.
00:15:52No, no.
00:15:52Doku, I'll show you.
00:15:53I'll give you only one place to go.
00:15:55Right.
00:15:56You've got one touch.
00:15:57One touch.
00:15:58You only need to make one mistake here if you're Chelsea.
00:16:00And you're on the back foot again.
00:16:02That's because they're all up for it most of the time.
00:16:04All working for each other.
00:16:05One mistake.
00:16:06And they've got the ball back again.
00:16:07And look at the comfort when they're on the ball.
00:16:09And it happens time and time again with them.
00:16:11And when they had to depend on somebody else when they finally got through.
00:16:15Not a bad keeper to rely on, is it?
00:16:18See, he makes this look a lot more simple.
00:16:20I know it's straight ahead.
00:16:21Don't get me wrong.
00:16:21There's a lot of goalies there that get too involved there.
00:16:23They rush out.
00:16:24They collide with Cuccarelli.
00:16:27Sorry.
00:16:27And it's a penalty.
00:16:28But he doesn't.
00:16:29He holds.
00:16:29Waits, waits, waits.
00:16:30Makes a save.
00:16:31Yeah.
00:16:31I mean, the whole way through the game.
00:16:33You know, if you're up two, three, they just don't turn off.
00:16:36Every one of them is chasing back.
00:16:38It's the players that are chasing back.
00:16:40That's the menu there.
00:16:41He's playing at left back.
00:16:42And he's doing it constantly through the game.
00:16:44And he's got the fitness to be able to do as well.
00:16:46Foden's come on.
00:16:47And he's not just swung down to the game.
00:16:49It's not going great for Foden at the moment.
00:16:51But do you know what?
00:16:52You can work your way out of these times.
00:16:54And that guy, right now, has got every single one of them working.
00:16:58And I don't know if you notice there, at the end of the game, towards the end of the game,
00:17:01they're still playing on the pitch.
00:17:03And so many empty seats.
00:17:05So many blue seats there.
00:17:07Five games now out of six they've lost in all competitions.
00:17:10Things are not going well, Chelsea.
00:17:11And a particularly bad run just now.
00:17:13I mean, five points out of 21 when they were trying to go and get Champions League football.
00:17:18And they're falling right off it just now.
00:17:19That's a bad feeling at the club at the moment with a lot of the fans as well.
00:17:24They're not actually angry at the moment.
00:17:25They're actually resigned.
00:17:27And that's a bad thing.
00:17:28It's a very, very bad thing at this time of the season.
00:17:30So they need to get something turned around.
00:17:32But at this point in time, the work that you need isn't actually coming for that group of players just
00:17:38now.
00:17:38They need to turn it around quickly or the Champions League is going to disappear.
00:17:41A lot of boos at full time as well.
00:17:43Now this is a remarkable thing that Pep Guardiola has done time and time again.
00:17:47So I don't know why we're so surprised that he seems to be closing in on what was a 12
00:17:51-point lead.
00:17:52Because April is the month he knows that his teams have to ramp it up.
00:17:56And their record in April compared to, say, Arsenal,
00:18:00now this is since Arteta took over, so last six years,
00:18:03is 2.7 points per game compared to Arsenal's 1.5 per game.
00:18:08So in black and white terms there, they know how to manage this month and what to do.
00:18:13But how do you do that?
00:18:15It's about more than using your squad and injuries, isn't it?
00:18:17I think first and foremost, it's bought and paid for.
00:18:20You know, Pep Guardiola has six Premier League titles now.
00:18:22They've done it before.
00:18:23I think with Arsenal, because they're still quite having managed to get over the line,
00:18:26the pressure is starting to build.
00:18:28And if you're an Arsenal fan, you're looking at that graphic there,
00:18:30it's ominous, it really is.
00:18:31But it's a mental thing, Pat.
00:18:33It is a mental thing, but the great teams know how to do it.
00:18:36And you said that simply great teams.
00:18:39There are not many great teams, but you look back at the great Liverpool teams,
00:18:42they were able to do it, certainly like Ferguson.
00:18:44He always knew.
00:18:45It starts in December, January, February and builds from there.
00:18:49So the very, very best managers always manage how to do it,
00:18:53get the players that are capable of doing it.
00:18:54And if they have to add a little bit, say in January,
00:18:57an extra player that just gives them that little bit of lift,
00:18:59they know how to do that as well.
00:19:01So, to be honest, Man City, you can just feel it coming,
00:19:05and it must be horrible if you're Arsenal.
00:19:06Well, we will throw it towards next weekend,
00:19:09which could be the pivotal weekend of the season, of course,
00:19:12as the two of them come head-to-head at the Etihad.
00:19:16Time now for March's goal of the month.
00:19:18Here are the contenders.
00:19:36Jesus lets it run.
00:19:38And suddenly both Guifa and Van Hecker were taken out of the game.
00:19:42Gibbs-White collects and lets fly.
00:19:44Fantastic goal for Nottingham Forest.
00:19:47And for Morgan Gibbs-White.
00:19:58Wilson.
00:20:00It won't be!
00:20:03It's a beauty!
00:20:05An absolute peach of a hit!
00:20:17Crosses too long, is it?
00:20:18Gets in by Jesus.
00:20:20Gets away to score!
00:20:21Totally against Solana play.
00:20:231-1, and that is football for you.
00:20:33It's a good goal from him.
00:20:35Anderson takes it back again.
00:20:37Shooting opportunity.
00:20:38Brilliant goal!
00:20:40Splendidly worked.
00:20:41Brilliantly executed.
00:20:42And they've come back again.
00:20:51Asula charging forward.
00:20:53And he'll keep it in.
00:20:55Stuffles as he goes along.
00:20:56But he's got hold of it.
00:20:57And he's got...
00:20:58To go for goal and scores!
00:21:01My word!
00:21:02What a goal that is!
00:21:04Feel the noise!
00:21:06It's bouncing in St. James's Park!
00:21:13Beto's Heather.
00:21:15And Jai's onto it.
00:21:16Up against Caicedo.
00:21:18Kill him and then Jai!
00:21:21A special strike!
00:21:24To make it 3-0!
00:21:28Some absolute belters there and you can vote now using the QR code on the screen or by
00:21:33going to the BBC Sport website and app.
00:21:35And the vote closes at 11.45 and we will of course give you the result at the end of
00:21:40the
00:21:40show.
00:21:40Full terms and privacy notice are available on the website.
00:21:43So, having dropped into the bottom three following West Ham's win on Friday night, Spurs travelled
00:21:49to Sunderland for their first game under new boss Roberto Di Zerbi.
00:21:52Looking to turn around a 13-game winless run in the Premier League.
00:21:56Guy Mowbrie was at the Stadium of Light.
00:22:00Spurs, third man in charge this season and no time to settle in.
00:22:04Seven games to preserve 48 years of top flight status.
00:22:09Amongst four Sunderland changes from their Derby double success at Newcastle three weeks
00:22:14ago, Robin Roofs is back in goal after four games out injured.
00:22:18But the spotlight is much more on Spurs keeper Antonin Kinski.
00:22:22With Guglielmo Vicario ruled out, he plays for the first time since being taken off just
00:22:2817 minutes in at Atletico Madrid a month ago.
00:22:34No win in 13 Premier League games for Spurs.
00:22:37No win for Sunderland in 15 games against them.
00:22:41Never mind the history.
00:22:42This is all about the immediate future.
00:22:45Sunderland can play with the brakes off.
00:22:47Spurs simply have to.
00:22:51Ranildo.
00:22:52Sunderland are playing a patient attacking game here.
00:22:56Ranildo, Le Fay, they've worked it nicely.
00:22:59Just a little bit too high.
00:23:02Brian Brobby got off the floor but couldn't stay over the ball.
00:23:08Left as high as he possibly could.
00:23:13Manchester Briss saying yesterday the main goal of the season is probably achieved.
00:23:18Oh I'd say so.
00:23:2043 points with seven games still to play.
00:23:24Sunderland didn't reach the 40 point mark in any of the previous five Premier League seasons.
00:23:32Spurs take the free kick quickly.
00:23:34Bergvau.
00:23:35Colin Mouane having a battle with Alderete.
00:23:38Who's won it?
00:23:40What's happened here?
00:23:42Well nine slid in.
00:23:43And a penalty's been given.
00:23:46And Sunderland can't believe that.
00:23:49Colin Mouane was caught right in between Luke 09 and Omar Alderete.
00:23:55And with most inside the stadium.
00:23:57And I think that's home and away fans expecting goal kick or corner.
00:24:00Rob Jones feels that Colin Mouane has been brought down here.
00:24:03VAR will get involved now.
00:24:05James Bell is in the hot seat.
00:24:06And Rob Jones is going to be asked by James Bell to go and have another look.
00:24:10So clearly the VAR is of the opinion that that shouldn't be a penalty.
00:24:16The verdict of James Bell is that Colin Mouane is already on his way down before any challenges come in.
00:24:24And Alderete actually gets a bit of the ball.
00:24:27Then it's Colin Mouane who initiates the contact.
00:24:30I think I'll go along with all of that.
00:24:32And Rob Jones has been swayed.
00:24:34No penalty.
00:24:36Sometimes you just have a gut feeling, don't you?
00:24:38And, okay, he had one and it was wrong.
00:24:41Most people watching, I think, had the feeling that, no, that's not a pen.
00:24:49Xhaka.
00:24:52Really well done by Moukiele.
00:24:55Now here's Brobby.
00:24:57Romero crunches in.
00:24:58It's played up towards Siddiqui.
00:25:01He's watching the bounce carefully and Poro is there first.
00:25:04And now Rob Jones, the ref, brings the play back.
00:25:07Gives Sunderland the free kick and books Romero.
00:25:12Right to let it go with the advantage, but I think also right to pull it back.
00:25:18Sunderland captain directing operations here.
00:25:21Along with Enzo Le Fay who plays it up.
00:25:24And, oh, Moukiele with a wonderful chance.
00:25:28It looked as though he only needed to make any sort of contact and his team would have the lead.
00:25:33He sees it come all the way onto, well, I was going to say his forehead.
00:25:36It might have been the side of his head.
00:25:37Big, big chance gone.
00:25:44Xhaka is demanding the ball be played into his feet.
00:25:49Touched out by Colin Mouane for a Sunderland throw.
00:25:53I think O9 is going to take this one.
00:25:56In from O9.
00:25:59He's not headed away far, there's Xhaka, and it's wide.
00:26:04The expression tells us it was close.
00:26:07Xhaka's eyes lit up.
00:26:09Oh, it was close.
00:26:15Touched on by Siddiqui, but Le Fay haven't gone.
00:26:18Brobby's taken the ball here from Porro.
00:26:20A mistake from Pedro Porro.
00:26:21Who's then down.
00:26:23And the referee does say that it's a free kick for Spurs.
00:26:26And will not be happy with Brian Brobby's use of the elbows.
00:26:30Brian Brobby's not happy with the fact that Porro went down as though he had been unfairly flawed.
00:26:39Shrugging him off.
00:26:40I think the elbow does make contact with Porro's chin at one point, but it wasn't thrust back.
00:26:45Yellow card for Brobby.
00:26:49That's where it hits him.
00:26:50But it's the shrug off with the hold of the shirt that is the real foul.
00:26:54I think the referee has got that pretty much right at the end of that.
00:26:58All the talk of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua to come maybe later in the year.
00:27:03I bet Brian Brobby could give either of them a scrap.
00:27:05Might not win, but he'd give it a go.
00:27:08Xhaka up to Brobby.
00:27:11Romero battling as he always does, but a tap to the head of Brian Brobby gives Sunderland a free kick.
00:27:17And Sunderland players are straight away over towards the ref to remind him that Romero is on a yellow.
00:27:23Don't think you could argue that that constituted a caution in isolation.
00:27:28But it's another one for the charge sheet.
00:27:34Rigg.
00:27:35Doesn't come for Lafay, does come for Brobby.
00:27:38Fired back by Mukiele.
00:27:41Straight at Gallagher.
00:27:43And the Spurs defenders congratulate Antonin Kinski for this save.
00:27:48Really sharp.
00:27:50Roberto Deserbi calls for strength and character through to the break.
00:27:56Rishalis.
00:27:59Doggy.
00:27:59Alderete.
00:28:00Oh, he's given that to Solanke.
00:28:02And Rufus is there to stop the shot.
00:28:05Huge let-off for Omar Alderete here.
00:28:07Very nearly getting himself an unwanted assist.
00:28:10Gifting it to Solanke.
00:28:13Incredible to think, isn't it, that Spurs are in the bottom three
00:28:16under the very real threat of relegation from the top flight for the first time since 1977.
00:28:22Back then, they went down along with Sunderland.
00:28:27Mukiele drifts away from Gallagher.
00:28:30Mukiele into a scoring position.
00:28:32Big deflection!
00:28:33And Sunderland have scored.
00:28:38Nordi Mukiele has a grin as wide as the weir.
00:28:42He took a chance.
00:28:45Came off Mickey Vendorven.
00:28:47And then the whole of the stadium light held its breath to see where it was going.
00:28:51We know where it went.
00:28:52Sunderland one, Spurs nil.
00:28:55Mukiele will claim it for his second Sunderland goal.
00:28:59Kinski completely wrong-footed.
00:29:01What a cruel blow for Spurs, just as they were about to make three substitutions.
00:29:06They do so now, a goal behind.
00:29:09Pat Matassar, Matisse Tell and Joao Palinha have come on.
00:29:14Taking over from Lucas Bergveld, Archie Gray and Richarlison.
00:29:22A challenge if Chris Rigg draws a huge cheer.
00:29:26Tell left on the floor.
00:29:27Brobby now trying to get in between Romero and Kinski.
00:29:31Now, did he push Romero into Kinski unfairly and maybe dangerously?
00:29:37Because Brian Brobby's on a caution.
00:29:39The two Spurs players are down.
00:29:41Does Brobby need to do that?
00:29:44I think he was quite deliberate.
00:29:46Should there have been, at the very least, the thought of a yellow card for Brian Brobby, which would be
00:29:53his second of the game.
00:29:55There is no sign of it.
00:29:57Not enough then to constitute another yellow for Brobby.
00:30:01Benefit of the doubt given to him.
00:30:04Looks like just a flesh wound for Antonin Kinski, the fact they're strapping it up like this.
00:30:12Romero is distraught by this.
00:30:14He's got to go off.
00:30:16Romero consoled by every one of his teammates as he goes to the touchline and Kevin Danso comes on.
00:30:24The armband will be passed on to Miki van der Ven.
00:30:31Jacka over the top.
00:30:32What a run this is by Siddiqui.
00:30:34Good control.
00:30:35Now Chris Rigg.
00:30:36What a block that is.
00:30:37A combination of van der Ven and Danso.
00:30:39Really important that.
00:30:41If it goes to two, Spurs are done.
00:30:45Only one of the last ten Spurs bosses has lost their first Premier League game, but it was the last
00:30:51one.
00:30:51Eagle Tudor.
00:30:58Again Xavi Simons.
00:31:01The doggy has made a break into the box.
00:31:04Pedro Poro finds him and gets the return and rifles over the top, but it was either deflected or saved
00:31:10by Rufs.
00:31:11And I fancy it's the latter.
00:31:13Got the tips of his gloves to it, the Sunderland keeper.
00:31:16Keeping out what would have been a thunderous equaliser and a vital one from Pedro Poro.
00:31:31Sunderland win.
00:31:32Back to back victories in the Premier League for only the second time this season.
00:31:36But Spurs now are absolutely amongst the favourites for the drop.
00:31:41Because in 2026 their record is now drawn five, lost nine.
00:31:47Their worst run in the league since 1935.
00:31:53Sunderland won.
00:31:54Spurs nil.
00:31:56On target? Off target? Your goal?
00:31:59You want me to be honest with you?
00:32:01Go on.
00:32:01Doesn't matter for me.
00:32:03If it's me, it's me. If it's not me.
00:32:05It doesn't matter. The most important is that this shoot was inside.
00:32:10And we defend very well until the end.
00:32:12And we take the three points.
00:32:13And I think this is the most important.
00:32:15You've achieved your goals for the season.
00:32:17But have you got new goals in place now?
00:32:19Yeah, I think the players are ambitious for us as a club.
00:32:23I think we want to stay consistent.
00:32:27And probably the top ten is a good target for Sunderland.
00:32:31And after that, if you are consistent in the top ten,
00:32:34maybe sometimes you can achieve something more.
00:32:35I can do a big brother, a father.
00:32:40They don't need a coach.
00:32:42My work is not too much on the pitch, but it's to help these players
00:32:46because they are good guys.
00:32:48And I'm sorry for them.
00:32:50Because I would like to shoot to give something more in energy,
00:32:55in confidence, in what the player needs to play football.
00:33:00I'm sure if we are able to win a game, everything goes to change.
00:33:07I think Roberto Di Zerbi there recognising his role is going to be one of psychologists
00:33:11as much as head coach, isn't it, at the moment.
00:33:13This was, of course, his first game in charge.
00:33:15You've hot-footed it from the Stadium of Light.
00:33:17Did you see something, anything different about Spurs today?
00:33:20At the start, yes, there was something.
00:33:22But you would get that.
00:33:23Your managers had a word win before the game.
00:33:24They've simplified the tactics.
00:33:26That's fine.
00:33:27So they all knew what they were doing.
00:33:28And I liked when they start.
00:33:29I mean, you've got the two centre-backs going wide.
00:33:32That's fine, normal.
00:33:33But look how high your doggy is.
00:33:34You think, yeah, good.
00:33:35That's a positive start.
00:33:36You've got the three centre.
00:33:37Well, the centre follows each one of them.
00:33:39But they're all really high up the pitch.
00:33:40And that's a good way to start.
00:33:42Front foot.
00:33:43See if you can put a little bit of pressure on.
00:33:44And do you know what?
00:33:45It's okay at the front.
00:33:46There's a liveliness about them.
00:33:48A sharpness.
00:33:49Your doggy makes a big, big difference when he's back in there.
00:33:51Because look, he wants to get into that area.
00:33:53Dragging players away.
00:33:54And that leads to a little bit of space there.
00:33:57And this was a half a chance for Bergwil.
00:33:58Doesn't quite get an end of it.
00:34:00And it's a shame that Porro, again, right full-back.
00:34:02He's up there and has a shot and it's on target.
00:34:04Once again, go wide there.
00:34:07Look at how high up those forwards are.
00:34:09Right up the pitch.
00:34:10They're making a lot of space there.
00:34:11Thinking, we're good enough to pass out.
00:34:13Play it.
00:34:14Believe in yourselves a little bit.
00:34:16Which we weren't seeing a lot beforehand.
00:34:18But they've managed to do that there.
00:34:20Winning balls back.
00:34:21Galaxy, that's what you want them to do.
00:34:22To win balls in that area.
00:34:24So yeah, they finally get into this area.
00:34:26And the shame is Richarlison didn't have the power of it.
00:34:29And he needs a little bit more of that.
00:34:31However, you don't want to be unlucky in these situations.
00:34:34He wanted to make three substitutions.
00:34:36It's 0-0 here.
00:34:37He knew his team was tiring.
00:34:38But he didn't quite manage to get it done in time.
00:34:41So they're set up again.
00:34:42Positive.
00:34:434-4-2.
00:34:43They've got two strikers up there.
00:34:45They're trying to get in the end.
00:34:46They're trying to win the game.
00:34:47They're still at 0-0 just now.
00:34:49But mistakes.
00:34:50Colin Gallagher getting close.
00:34:51Probably doesn't need to chase that.
00:34:52Richarlison, don't dive in.
00:34:54You're out of the game now.
00:34:56Gallagher comes back in.
00:34:57But he doesn't need to dive.
00:34:59Don't let him go down that line there.
00:35:02Should have showed him there.
00:35:03Didn't.
00:35:04But that's just bad luck again.
00:35:05So he doesn't get the change that he wanted to make.
00:35:07And then he gets that little bit of a bad luck as well.
00:35:10In the midst of it all, do not forget, although the story is that Spurs are having a tough time.
00:35:15Sunderland were absolutely magnificent.
00:35:17And their fans, by the way, I have to say, the noise in the stadium just now.
00:35:20It's an absolute joy to be there.
00:35:21But Polina, don't lie down.
00:35:24You're 1-0 down.
00:35:25You need these points.
00:35:26Now you're 3v2.
00:35:28It's okay.
00:35:28You've got this sorted.
00:35:29They'll not get by you.
00:35:30One missed tackle.
00:35:31Again.
00:35:32Another missed tackle.
00:35:33You should never be getting chances out of this.
00:35:36And it's the old knife through butter.
00:35:37You cannot allow that to happen.
00:35:39And that's a real worry for him.
00:35:41He's got a lot of things to do.
00:35:43And it underlines it with these statistics here.
00:35:46The tackles that are made and won.
00:35:4915 to Sunderland, 5 to Spurs.
00:35:51And I think most of Spurs were in those first 20 minutes or so.
00:35:55You need to fight.
00:35:56We talk about it at the end of the season.
00:35:57You need to fight.
00:35:58And at the moment, that's just not enough for the entirety of the game.
00:36:01There was a positive for Spurs and certainly a positive for Antonin Kinski, who of course was taken off after
00:36:0717 minutes against Atletico Madrid by Igor Tudor just about a month ago.
00:36:12I think a lot of people didn't think they'd see him again in a Spurs shirt.
00:36:15It must have taken a lot of mental fortitude to get himself out there today.
00:36:19As a goalkeeper, you can appreciate the strength of character.
00:36:22Yeah, I was one of those people I didn't think you'd see him pull on a Spurs shirt again.
00:36:26And today was all about just getting through it.
00:36:28He needs to get through it, not make any mistakes.
00:36:29And it doesn't come easier than this to start.
00:36:32You just need a good contact.
00:36:33You do.
00:36:34You need a good first contact.
00:36:35I know it's just a simple touch over the bar, but it's a positive action.
00:36:38And that's what sets you off.
00:36:40And then his distribution was solid throughout the game.
00:36:42He didn't put a foot wrong.
00:36:43You can see the ball out to here.
00:36:44Lovely strike.
00:36:45Confident strike.
00:36:46On the front foot, starting to try and get things done.
00:36:49And this here would have done him the word of good.
00:36:50Fantastic save.
00:36:51Out quickly.
00:36:52Big and brave.
00:36:53And he'd have gone in at half-time feeling a million dollars.
00:36:55Feeling, I can do this.
00:36:57And you can see here, when your luck is out, your luck really is out here.
00:37:01It takes to the deflection.
00:37:02Absolutely no chance of it.
00:37:03And if you need a visual representation of Spurs' season, you can see a crisp packet.
00:37:07Just in the bottom corner there, just floating in the wind.
00:37:11And then this here though, this could be a problem for Spurs.
00:37:14Romero had to come off injured from this.
00:37:16And I think this just comes from Kinski not having his starting positions quite drilled yet.
00:37:20Not used to being in that first team.
00:37:23He ends up with some, obviously, a big old gash on his head.
00:37:26And Romero coming off injured, which could be a problem for the rest of the season.
00:37:29It could be.
00:37:29And could that image of him crying as he left the pitch there be one of the defining images for
00:37:35Spurs this season?
00:37:36I like the way you say, one of the defining images, because I think there's going to be quite a
00:37:39few of them if they do go down.
00:37:41It's torture.
00:37:42To be honest, if they turned the line again today, the Spurs fans that turned up were brilliant.
00:37:45They really got behind the team.
00:37:47They know that their team need them just now because the lack of confidence, the deep sadness as well that
00:37:52is there just now.
00:37:53And there's something else.
00:37:55There's almost a fatalism about it now.
00:37:58And I've been once in a fight against relegation.
00:38:01And that's how it feels.
00:38:03Everything goes against you.
00:38:05OK.
00:38:05Thank you for the moment.
00:38:06Newcastle United travel to South London looking to revive their faltering season against a Palace side buoyant after Thursday's big
00:38:13European win against Fiorentina.
00:38:15Commentary comes from Simon Brotherton.
00:38:17Three goals without reply in midweek as Palace fans looking forward to their second leg trips at Tuscany and dreaming
00:38:24of a European semi-final.
00:38:26While Newcastle have had three weeks to stew on the disappointment of defeat in the Tyne Weir derby.
00:38:31The hosts make five changes with Adam Wharton and Daichi Kamada among those rested ahead of Thursday's second leg.
00:38:38Jürgen Strand-Larsen returns from suspension.
00:38:41And Jeremy Pino makes his first start since February.
00:38:44Newcastle have lost six of the last nine in the league.
00:38:47But welcome back Sandro Tonali and Lewis Miley who's been out since late January.
00:38:52Also among six changes, William Osula makes only his second Premier League start of the campaign.
00:38:59Newcastle looking to do the double over Crystal Palace today having beaten them 2-0 at St James' back in
00:39:04January.
00:39:06Now it's with Johnson and Jeremy Pino looking for the chance to shoot which he finds.
00:39:12Ramsdale saves.
00:39:13Munoz is there on the follow-up.
00:39:15Brilliantly stopped.
00:39:18And Ramsdale alert when required after a very quiet opening half an hour or so.
00:39:25Made the first save and quickly up to make the second as well.
00:39:30Not been an easy venue for Newcastle United this Selhurst Park pitch in recent years.
00:39:36They've only won one of the last ten visits.
00:39:40It's a poor ball from Anthony Gordon collected by Jürgen Strand-Larsen.
00:39:46And it just gets away from Jeremy Pino which enables Malik Chow to come across and snap out the danger.
00:39:57And Crystal Palace makes something of this.
00:40:01Over the top of the crossbar.
00:40:03Off the head of Canvo who'd come up from the back.
00:40:08What a moment that would have been for his first Crystal Palace goal.
00:40:12Got up superbly.
00:40:13Beat Ramsdale to it.
00:40:16Quite good form Crystal Palace going into this match.
00:40:18Unbeaten in the last five in all competitions before today.
00:40:24Good approach here.
00:40:26Moving the ball around superbly.
00:40:27Osula's there.
00:40:30And from point blank range fires it home.
00:40:33A lovely short sharp interchange of passes on the right hand side.
00:40:39And then after an initial fumble.
00:40:42Osula just getting there.
00:40:45Sorted his legs out in time.
00:40:47And lashed it past Henderson.
00:40:50And it's more or less the first thing Dean Henderson has had to do.
00:40:54Pick the ball out of the back of his net.
00:40:56With just over a couple of minutes remaining in the first half.
00:41:01The Palace now are going to have to come out and be a little more proactive.
00:41:08Munoz gets away from Chris Richards.
00:41:10And Osula could be in here once more.
00:41:13It's still Osula.
00:41:14Big save by Dean Henderson.
00:41:17Early second half opportunity for Newcastle.
00:41:21All given away.
00:41:22And Osula quick to pounce.
00:41:23But Henderson able to make the block.
00:41:48But Henderson able to make the block.
00:41:55The chase here and Malik Chao and Jean-Philippe Mateta.
00:41:58Chao is getting a handful or two of Mateta's shirt.
00:42:02Mateta getting the crowd going behind the goal in the Holmesdale end.
00:42:07And there's going to be a yellow card for the Newcastle central defender.
00:42:14Well it wasn't the most subtlest of shirt pulls was it?
00:42:23He knows free kick on the header slamming the bar.
00:42:28Munoz going for goal on the volley.
00:42:31Jefferson Lerma so close to equalising.
00:42:34There's the header.
00:42:35I think the frame of the goal is still rattling.
00:42:43Palace at the moment would be sliding towards the sixth home league defeat of the season.
00:42:49Turn there by Mateta.
00:42:52Challenge by Joel Linton.
00:42:55Joel Linton knows he can't afford to get booked today.
00:42:57And Andy Madley reaches for his yellow card.
00:43:02And Joel Linton's reaction tells you everything you need to know.
00:43:05He will be suspended from Newcastle's next two matches.
00:43:09That's his tenth yellow of the season.
00:43:12He needed to get through today without picking up a yellow.
00:43:22Convert away from Miley.
00:43:25Excellent play.
00:43:27Kamada.
00:43:28Here comes Munoz now.
00:43:30First time collected here by Tyreek Mitchell.
00:43:33And the header in.
00:43:34It was Mateta.
00:43:38Off the bench to bring Crystal Palace back in the game.
00:43:43Palace a level.
00:43:45And Mateta scores in the Premier League.
00:43:47For the first time since New Year's Day.
00:43:52Tyreek Mitchell across the face of the goal.
00:43:55Mateta's header.
00:43:56Botman.
00:43:57Can't deflect it wide.
00:44:00Crystal Palace one.
00:44:00Newcastle United one.
00:44:05Awkward bounce for Mitchell.
00:44:07Kamada.
00:44:08Nicely done.
00:44:09Ismail Assar losing out to Malik Chow.
00:44:16We're going to have some late drama at Selhurst Park today.
00:44:22Or will everyone have to settle for a point each?
00:44:26Richard took the throw.
00:44:27It's a penalty to Crystal Palace.
00:44:33Referee quick to make a judgement there.
00:44:36But there was tussling even before the throw-in was taken.
00:44:39And you knew something was going to happen.
00:44:43Watch Sven Botman and Jefferson Lerma here.
00:44:46He's got a hold of his shirt.
00:44:47Lerma going to ground.
00:44:49Andy Madley pointing straight to the spot.
00:44:52It's going to be a penalty.
00:44:54The moment of the afternoon.
00:44:57Right at the end.
00:44:58Deep in added time.
00:44:59It's Mateta against Ramsdale.
00:45:02And it's 2-1 Crystal Palace.
00:45:05Turnaround complete.
00:45:08Not quite the last kick of the game.
00:45:10But not too far from it.
00:45:12Mateta at the double.
00:45:14Surely three points for Palace.
00:45:17Bitter disappointment for Newcastle United.
00:45:19Who led earlier in the afternoon.
00:45:24Crystal Palace 2, Newcastle United 1.
00:45:27And there is barely time for Eddie Howe's team to do anything about it.
00:45:33What a twist.
00:45:34What a turnaround.
00:45:35And what a finale.
00:45:37In the Selhurst sunshine.
00:45:39It was a very tight game.
00:45:41Overall small margins decided.
00:45:43And then when Newcastle is 1-0 up with all their pace.
00:45:46They have and with how good they are in transitions.
00:45:49Then to get the turnaround and win the game at the end.
00:45:53So really a huge credit to the players.
00:45:56We also had a great impact again.
00:45:58Like on Thursday from the bench players.
00:46:00And that's just a good feeling.
00:46:03Tough one to swallow I would imagine at the end of that.
00:46:06Yeah, very.
00:46:07We had control of that first half by and large for the majority of it.
00:46:11I thought we looked pretty comfortable in the game.
00:46:13Played some good football.
00:46:14Come away with another defeat which is hard to take off the back of,
00:46:19in parts, a good performance.
00:46:21Currently I think the hit list for us is to just get a pride back in our performance
00:46:25and start winning some games and see where it takes us.
00:46:27I think the attitude of the players is good.
00:46:29I think the will to win is there but we haven't delivered it enough.
00:46:33And certainly it's a time to sort of absorb that and come back fighting.
00:46:37At the end it's always a team effort.
00:46:39It's the same way with the penalty.
00:46:40We were a little bit lucky.
00:46:42I think it was a penalty but if you get it in the 93rd minute, yes.
00:46:46Great time to get it.
00:46:47Yeah, absolutely.
00:46:48And yeah, JP is just calm, relaxed and took it.
00:46:53So yeah, massive performance today.
00:46:55You looked very confident from the moment you came on.
00:46:57Were you thinking this game needs somebody like me to come and lift it?
00:47:01Yeah, definitely.
00:47:02I was confident and I always try to help my team to win.
00:47:07I'm a winner.
00:47:08I always want to win and in my head I was like, I have a chance.
00:47:13Three goals in four days, pretty decent week.
00:47:15Yeah, I think I can do better.
00:47:19Well, his confidence is what turned the game for Crystal Palace.
00:47:22His introduction, Jean-Philippe Mateta, was the defining moment really.
00:47:26Yeah, it was absolutely perfect for him this game.
00:47:28Fresh off of 80 minutes in the week against Fiorentina.
00:47:32Basically, you just want Big Jean to come on.
00:47:34Give me everything you've got for half an hour.
00:47:36Run around.
00:47:37Get on the end of things.
00:47:38Bring people into play.
00:47:39Hold it up.
00:47:40Be a big old barrier.
00:47:41Big old worry.
00:47:42And that's exactly what he does.
00:47:43You can see it getting hold of it.
00:47:44Bring people into play.
00:47:45He wins the throw in here.
00:47:46But you can see the reaction.
00:47:47It gets the Palace fans going.
00:47:49And then this is the goal that he scores as well.
00:47:51It's a ball.
00:47:52Lovely ball over to the top.
00:47:53Territ Mitchell.
00:47:54Lovely and calm with it.
00:47:55Cuts it back.
00:47:56Big Mateta's there.
00:47:57Doing what good strikers do.
00:47:59Getting on the end of things.
00:48:00Finding things in the box.
00:48:01Little places to be.
00:48:02Little...
00:48:03I love that from him.
00:48:04And then this here.
00:48:05Really, really poor from Sven Wattmann.
00:48:07Really, really silly foul to give away.
00:48:08It's late on.
00:48:09It's the 95th minute.
00:48:10Who do you want to take your penalty for you?
00:48:12Jean-Philippe Mateta.
00:48:13Puts it in the back of the net.
00:48:15And Palace fans might not thank me for saying smash and grab.
00:48:17But they are always the sweetest ones.
00:48:19They really, really are.
00:48:20Eddie Howe doesn't seem...
00:48:22And there you can see his stats for the game speak for themselves, don't they?
00:48:26And his performance, obviously, gave them the victory,
00:48:29which went against the first half for Newcastle,
00:48:32who took the lead into the break.
00:48:34And he doesn't sound too down about it, Eddie Howe,
00:48:38but they have dropped 25 points from winning positions so far this season, Pat,
00:48:42which is obviously top of the Premier League in terms of that stat.
00:48:46Unenviable stat.
00:48:47Just ten of those points and they're in the Champions League place.
00:48:49Yeah.
00:48:49And it tells you how close it is and how tight it is.
00:48:52And I actually think it just underlines the problem that he's had for a long time.
00:48:56Maybe most of the time he's been at Newcastle.
00:48:58The squad isn't deep enough.
00:49:00Especially with the fact that they've been playing European football.
00:49:03Getting to cup finals.
00:49:04This season they get to a cup semi-final as well and probably two legs of that.
00:49:08If they didn't have those cups, particularly Europe for a year,
00:49:11I think they're a top five team.
00:49:13I think they're good enough players and I think he's a very, very good manager.
00:49:15And there's a lot of managers when they have a difficult wee period like this,
00:49:19you know, they just kick them out and say,
00:49:20we'll go for the next guy.
00:49:22The devil you know sometimes is a better one.
00:49:24And I think Eddie Howe, I would absolutely be sticking by them.
00:49:27However, I know a number of Newcastle fans are beginning to really waver at the moment.
00:49:32I agree.
00:49:32I agree with Pat.
00:49:33I think it's better the devil you know sometimes.
00:49:35It's been their problem for a couple of years now,
00:49:37is that strength and depth.
00:49:38And when you are in European competition, it really does spread it thin.
00:49:41And if they were to get rid of Eddie Howe,
00:49:43I think there would be so many teams sniffing around him to try and slap him up.
00:49:46There is something of a pattern with Newcastle and their iconic managers.
00:49:50Kevin Keegan, five years in his first reign.
00:49:52Bobby Robson, five years.
00:49:53Eddie Howe is now five years.
00:49:56There is also that thing, isn't there, in football where people start to get a little bit,
00:49:59you know, looking around, what's around the corner?
00:50:02Who could come in and turn this team around?
00:50:04But you're both convinced that Eddie is the man for the job.
00:50:07I do.
00:50:07And I think a lot of real lovers of Newcastle feel that way as well,
00:50:11because you like him as a person.
00:50:12And remember, he got that cup.
00:50:14I was going to say, the trophy, I think, is a very valuable piece of currency, isn't it,
00:50:18for him and his love with the fans.
00:50:21OK.
00:50:22Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa return from Thursday night Europa League adventures
00:50:26to face each other at the city ground,
00:50:28with Forest needing a win to edge clear of the relegation zone.
00:50:31Commentary comes from Vicky Sparks.
00:50:33These two would meet in the Europa League semi-finals if they get through their last eight ties,
00:50:37but today the focus is firmly on the Premier League, albeit the different ends at the table.
00:50:43Forest make nine changes from the draw with Porto.
00:50:46It's the same team that beat Spurs in that huge win before the international break.
00:50:49Chris Wood is back on the bench in the Premier League for the first time in almost six months
00:50:54after making his long-awaited comeback from injury on Thursday.
00:50:58A late blow for Villa, Emi Martinez putting out injured in the warm-up,
00:51:02replaced by Marco Bezos.
00:51:04Lindelof and Barkley in for Conte and Buendia, who are on the bench,
00:51:07are the other changes from the win over Bologna.
00:51:10Buddy Watkins backed a brace in that game and is hitting form at just the right time
00:51:14as he bids to break back into England's squad for the World Cup.
00:51:17If he scores today, it'll be his 100th goal for Villa.
00:51:23Fans and players united.
00:51:25And a really lovely touch, that little lad in the middle running towards the team
00:51:30is a young Forest supporter named Noah, who recently overcame his battle with cancer.
00:51:37You have to go back to mid-December for the last time that Forrest won a league game at home.
00:51:43Can they end that dreadful run today against the Villa side,
00:51:47who have lost on their last two visits to the city grounds?
00:51:54Torres, Dinia, which has made the run.
00:51:58Fist across and in.
00:52:02In fortuitous circumstances.
00:52:05Aston Villa take the lead.
00:52:07Own goal.
00:52:09And the congratulations from a Villa point of view go to Morgan Rodgers.
00:52:14What agony for Murillo and Nottingham Forest.
00:52:20Neatly worked by Villa.
00:52:22Probably first time delivery from Dinia.
00:52:24Rodgers just fizzed it across.
00:52:28Murillo couldn't sort his feet out.
00:52:31It's Villa who leads.
00:52:33By a goal to nil.
00:52:41Villa ahead.
00:52:43They're yet to have their first shot on target.
00:52:45Get it here.
00:52:46It's Watkins.
00:52:49The flag up on the far side.
00:52:52But Sells did brilliantly.
00:52:56And in a flash.
00:52:58Villa could have been 2-0 up.
00:52:59Oh, he was on.
00:53:01He was on.
00:53:02Had it gone in.
00:53:04VAR would have overruled that.
00:53:05A vital contribution from Matt Sells in the end.
00:53:11TORRES.
00:53:13TORRES.
00:53:13BARCLAY.
00:53:14ROGERS.
00:53:15ANANA.
00:53:16Villa going through the gears.
00:53:19McGinn.
00:53:21ROGERS.
00:53:23OFF!
00:53:25Well, it would have been a beautiful Aston Villa goal.
00:53:29Just clicking at the moment for Villa.
00:53:31And Rodgers' powerful drive.
00:53:34Taking a nick off the woodwork.
00:53:41Gives White.
00:53:45Wiener getting forwards.
00:53:50Space for Hudson-Odoi.
00:53:51Lovely control.
00:53:53Needs to make up his mind.
00:53:55Finds Williams!
00:54:00That's what they needed.
00:54:02A little bit of magic from Nico Williams.
00:54:07And it's Nottingham Forest one.
00:54:09Aston Villa one.
00:54:11Well, before this season, he'd never scored more than once in a campaign for Nottingham Forest.
00:54:16He has now.
00:54:18That's his second.
00:54:20And what a precious time to get it.
00:54:24Sweetly struck.
00:54:26And we're all square.
00:54:30Barclay.
00:54:31Well held up.
00:54:32McGinn.
00:54:33Well found.
00:54:35Rodgers.
00:54:36Can't squeeze it through to Ollie Watkins.
00:54:39And that is an opening for Villa squandered.
00:54:45Here comes Forest.
00:54:46Hudson-Odoi.
00:54:49All of a sudden it's end to end.
00:54:52Here's Williams.
00:54:53He's going to go for goal again.
00:54:55And Wiesel just does enough.
00:54:58And having been beaten at that post by Williams just a few moments ago.
00:55:03He's up went for safety first.
00:55:08Super driven delivery to Hudson-Odoi.
00:55:11Forest fans enjoyed that.
00:55:13They might enjoy this.
00:55:15It's Nico Williams.
00:55:17It's Hudson-Odoi.
00:55:19And Eagle Jesus.
00:55:21With a chance at the far post.
00:55:24Nice ball in by Hudson-Odoi and you can see his frustration.
00:55:28And Jesus can't do more with it.
00:55:31Under good pressure from Dinia it has to be said.
00:55:35Well this is a moment that the Forest fans have waited almost half a year for.
00:55:42Chris Wood about to return to action in the Premier League.
00:55:49Reiner looking for the round of Jesus.
00:55:51And Paul Torres wasn't strong enough.
00:55:53Jesus skips wide.
00:55:55Deflection of cash.
00:55:56Brilliant save, Wiesel.
00:55:57And Torres will bring it away.
00:56:01That is a fabulous stop.
00:56:03From a man who's only playing because Martinez got injured in the warm-up.
00:56:11Men.
00:56:12TILOM insist.
00:56:12TILOMENCE.
00:56:14Still going, TILOMENCE.
00:56:16Here's McGOINn.
00:56:18Great save, Se bankers!
00:56:22Super goalkeeping at Buchan's.
00:56:25In a couple of minutes.
00:56:27Big, strong hand.
00:56:38Here comes Barclay, beaten away by Sells and what a miss from Rodgers, well for all the
00:56:51world it looked as though this would be 2-1 Villa, Sells to the rescue again initially
00:56:57for Forrest, perhaps could have done better with the shot, sent it right back into the
00:57:02danger area, Rodgers was there and Rodgers blazes over, here's Telemans, Wendia, now McKean,
00:57:19Wendia, it's Watkins, oh they thought that was it, they thought that was the lead back,
00:57:29they thought that was the century of Villa goals for Ollie Watkins, but by the space
00:57:35of a couple of yards, Ollie Watkins still 199. One of the huge objectives for yourself qualifying
00:57:42for the Champions League, when you look at the final few weeks of the season, how do
00:57:46you feel about where Villa are and how close you are to achieving those objectives?
00:57:50Very good, very good how we are now, competing in the quarterfinals in EuroLeague and competing
00:57:56for a top five position, this point is not enough, but of course can help us to get it.
00:58:01But now the next challenge is on Thursday and to try again to set the game plan, of course,
00:58:07we were planning the excellence today to win the excellence, we didn't achieve it, but
00:58:12I think we can be happy how the players react and how the players play and try to keep our
00:58:19game plan strong in 90 minutes, playing to win.
00:58:22Tottenham lost at Sunderland, which leaves you three points clear now of the relegation
00:58:27zone. What is your assessment of where Forest are now and the chances of avoiding that disaster,
00:58:32as you put it, of getting relegated?
00:58:34You know, the speed that I want to see in my team is to have the intention to get points
00:58:41everywhere. You need to fight for the points and this is what we did today. It's not possible
00:58:49to suffer with the results of the other teams. I don't like to see the games. I prefer to focus
00:58:57on my team and try to get the points until the end of the season.
00:59:02We won't tell you next time then.
00:59:06Well, with Spurs dropping points today, that proved to be a very good result indeed for
00:59:11Forest. And we talked about the fight in the Spurs plays that you want to see more of.
00:59:15There's a lot of that in evidence and Nico Williams personifies it.
00:59:18Yeah, he's had a fantastic season and certainly he was the man of the match today.
00:59:23The fact that he always wants to get forward. Look, he defends, he's a good defender, etc.
00:59:27But look, he always finds that little gap there, that little area.
00:59:30Now, a very important part of it is that's a good shot.
00:59:33Wingers and fullbacks have to work together.
00:59:36You have to understand when one goes long, the other covers.
00:59:39But if you've got something that Callum has done, he's going right to the line often.
00:59:43He's always looking for his fullback because they're a duo.
00:59:46They're working together all the time. They've got that understanding.
00:59:50Sometimes he'll go back and help. He doesn't need the help on this occasion.
00:59:52He does the tackling, you know, the normal stuff that you'd expect him to do.
00:59:56Getting himself into the right position.
00:59:58But when he's going forward, he doesn't seem to stop, does he?
01:00:02Nico's always wanting to get into that area.
01:00:05Put a little square there because, stop, wait, the ball's going to come there.
01:00:09Because his winger knows him. And he understands him.
01:00:12That's all the way through.
01:00:13He has made it actually funnily enough.
01:00:15On the other side, Einer does exactly the same.
01:00:18Some weeks he does it almost as well as him.
01:00:20But this time, it was all about Nico Williams.
01:00:23But, you know, the defending stuff, he's second favourite.
01:00:25But he still gets there. He still makes it happen.
01:00:28That was one where he could have given away a penalty there.
01:00:30But he was sensible about it. He was intelligent about it.
01:00:33And then he wins the ball and they come out with it again.
01:00:35So, if you're a...
01:00:36I mean, look at this. It's your right foot, mate.
01:00:39You're not supposed to be doing that at this point in time.
01:00:42You know, he's one of the best players, if not the best player for Forrest this season.
01:00:45He has got the fight. He has got the battle.
01:00:47And that's what keeps you up.
01:00:48And those sets there are why he was the man of the man.
01:00:51You'll be disappointed that Jens has created his second as a left field,
01:00:55but he's got a cheek to get that.
01:00:56But, to be honest, it sums up how well he's done and how well he's done today.
01:01:00Ben, we couldn't have you here on your Match of the Day debut
01:01:02without having a chance to wax lyrical about a goalkeeping performance.
01:01:07And Matt Siles gives you the opportunity to do that.
01:01:09Yeah, thank you very much. Matt Siles, take a bow.
01:01:12Brilliant performance today. He really did earn Forrest a point.
01:01:14This one here, fantastic.
01:01:16You can see the touch from Ollie Watkins.
01:01:17It's just a little bit too far for him, but he brushes out so, so quickly.
01:01:21You can just see here, puts that big toe out, big curly toe,
01:01:24just puts it past the post. Fantastic saves.
01:01:26Keeps Forrest into the game.
01:01:28This one here, though, is the save of the game for me. It really is.
01:01:30John McGinn, he knows exactly where he's going here, Matt Siles.
01:01:34He knows that he's going to be putting it back across him.
01:01:36He managed to slam the anchors on, but then it's about making the save.
01:01:39It's about getting that big contact, and that's exactly what he does.
01:01:41You see here, not only is it a good contact, it puts it safe out for a corner as well.
01:01:45And then Matty Cash with one of those horrible, wobbly right feet that he knows he's got.
01:01:50I think people don't understand how much of a good save this is.
01:01:53You can see it's going through bodies.
01:01:54It's wobbling all over the place.
01:01:55It's all about getting a really firm contact, and that is exactly what Matt Siles does.
01:01:59Fantastic performance from him today.
01:02:01OK, we've seen Forrest now, we've seen Spurs. West Ham played, of course, on Friday.
01:02:06Leeds don't play until tomorrow against Manchester United.
01:02:09So, let's have a little look at the run-ins, then, and how things stand currently.
01:02:14Who is your money on to survive, and who is going to fill that unfortunate 18th place burst?
01:02:20Who's go first?
01:02:21I think, having watched the Tottenham game in detail today, I was actually really taken about by the lack of
01:02:27confidence,
01:02:28the lack of positivity.
01:02:29They've got some very good players in that team, but when your confidence has gone, like Spurs are at the
01:02:33moment,
01:02:34it's a real tough place.
01:02:35I've been in relegation battles, I've had four or five, I can't even remember myself,
01:02:39four or five relegations.
01:02:40And when you're down there, and when you're in that rut of losing games like Spurs are,
01:02:43it's such a tough place to get out of.
01:02:45I've been to see Leeds and thought, they're not a team that's going down.
01:02:48I've been to see West Ham recently, they don't look like a team that's going down.
01:02:52And I've been to see Forrest, and they don't look like a team that's going down.
01:02:56I'm going to be quite silent about Tottenham Hotspur, because since the turn of the year,
01:03:00that's what they've looked like.
01:03:01The Zerbe, I'm not saying they're going down, but he's got some job to do now.
01:03:06A big week of European football coming up next week.
01:03:09The second leg of Liverpool's Champions League quarterfinal against PSG is on Tuesday night.
01:03:13Can they turn it round?
01:03:14You'll see there is live commentary on Five Live and BBC Sounds.
01:03:18There'll be highlights of every Champions League quarterfinal second leg on Wednesday night on BBC One.
01:03:23And if you like your snooker, the World Championship starts next Saturday on BBC Two and iPlayer.
01:03:30Everything we knew about travel does not apply.
01:03:33What?
01:03:34It's lovely down here, it's like sunbathing on the beach.
01:03:36Ready to rock and roll?
01:03:37Let's go.
01:03:38Molly, come on.
01:03:38Sorry for ruining your photos.
01:03:41I'm running on adrenaline now.
01:03:42Race across the world.
01:03:44Watch on BBC iPlayer.
01:03:48Here are the rest of the goals from the Premier League weekend.
01:03:56Fats.
01:03:59Wengamoa.
01:04:03Oh, brilliant.
01:04:05That is fabulous.
01:04:08From the 17-year-old.
01:04:13Wengamoa.
01:04:14In exactly the same spot.
01:04:16He couldn't, could he?
01:04:18Crosses this time.
01:04:19Gagpo.
01:04:20Salah.
01:04:24Big smile
01:04:25And listen to the Anfield roar for Mo Salah
01:04:30Such a big moment early on in the game
01:04:33Thiago sorts it home
01:04:36The Bees applying an early sting
01:04:39In this matchup for Europe
01:04:46O'Brien
01:04:53No foul, play on
01:04:55Gaze cross, Beto
01:04:58Everton are level
01:05:04Coyote, going to put on the accelerator
01:05:07Oh it's there
01:05:10Deflected in by Ingo Thiago
01:05:14Goal number 21 of the season
01:05:16The most any Brentford player has scored in a single edition
01:05:19In a Premier League season
01:05:22Here comes the cross
01:05:25And Jai
01:05:27O'Brien shot
01:05:29Dewsbury Hall
01:05:31Arrows it into the bar corner
01:05:34Brentford 2
01:05:35Everton 2
01:05:40They're queuing up and they score
01:05:43That's Weaver getting forward
01:05:45And putting Brighton into a deserved lead
01:05:49Gaby Ogle
01:05:50Back through to Mitoma
01:05:53Tee up Pascal Gross
01:05:55Mitoma might still get a chance here
01:05:56And so might FIFA
01:05:59Two goals from the right back
01:06:01Have won this game for Brighton
01:06:04Huge celebrations
01:06:06Because these are the kind of games you have to win
01:06:08If you have dreams of Europe
01:06:13Here's Truffair
01:06:14He's deflected through
01:06:16And Kruppi puts Bournemouth ahead
01:06:19And that is no surprise
01:06:22Could this be the day
01:06:23That puts the skids under their title challenge
01:06:28Madhuete with the corner
01:06:30Zubomendi comes near post
01:06:31Trying to get a little flick on
01:06:32He's won it back to Gabriel
01:06:34That popped up
01:06:35Did it hear they had
01:06:37And a penalty is given to Arsenal
01:06:39The referee had a think about it
01:06:41Didn't rush to a decision
01:06:44Victor Jokles
01:06:46Very big moment this
01:06:49And scores
01:06:51Petrovic has very nearly got to it
01:06:54Goal 18 of the season
01:06:56And all for him
01:06:571-1
01:07:00Brooks
01:07:01It's come through to Scott
01:07:02Big chance to win it
01:07:03What a lovely goal by Bournemouth
01:07:07They've been the better side
01:07:08And it was a lovely move
01:07:11Arsenal fans have seen enough
01:07:13They will go home
01:07:14Very concerned
01:07:15Is this another season
01:07:17Where Arsenal's title challenge
01:07:20Will be choked on
01:07:23So we said a very long time ago
01:07:24About an hour ago
01:07:25That we would throw it forwards
01:07:26To the game on Sunday
01:07:28Which is now being built up
01:07:30As it will be all week
01:07:31As a title decider
01:07:33I mean it's perfectly placed
01:07:34Isn't it
01:07:35Because we approached this
01:07:36At a point where
01:07:37Arsenal appear to be wobbling
01:07:39And Manchester City
01:07:40Appear to be cruising
01:07:41So I want to talk about
01:07:42Mindset
01:07:43And what happens
01:07:44Over the next few days
01:07:45What's Mikel Arteta
01:07:46First of all
01:07:47Got to do
01:07:48To try to pull something back
01:07:50From his team
01:07:51Who dropped points
01:07:52At the weekend
01:07:52And for the first time
01:07:54Lost two games
01:07:55At home
01:07:56I think
01:07:57I think they're in
01:07:58A difficult position
01:07:59I really do
01:08:00I watched the game yesterday
01:08:01And David Reyes
01:08:02Seemed to spend
01:08:03An awful lot of time
01:08:04Just stood on the ball
01:08:05And it made it really easy
01:08:07For Bournemouth
01:08:07To press up onto them
01:08:08And make it predictable
01:08:09You watch City today
01:08:10It's the exact opposite
01:08:11City are the ones
01:08:12Probing and they're the ones
01:08:13In full control of it
01:08:14So I think he needs to get
01:08:15Arsenal into position
01:08:16Next week
01:08:17Where they can let
01:08:18The shackles off
01:08:19A little bit more
01:08:19I think Arsenal
01:08:20Historically
01:08:20Even this season
01:08:21They've been
01:08:22They're a kind of
01:08:23Methodical team
01:08:24They're calm and methodical
01:08:25They never really
01:08:26Really go for it
01:08:27And I think the pressure
01:08:28That started to be
01:08:29Exerted onto them
01:08:30They've started to feel
01:08:31That pressure a little bit
01:08:32Too much
01:08:32And then it'd be
01:08:32Even more conservative
01:08:34Whereas City
01:08:35They're literally
01:08:36The flip side of that
01:08:37At the minute
01:08:37It's easy to say
01:08:39Don't try not to feel
01:08:40The pressure
01:08:40And enjoy yourself
01:08:42And you know
01:08:42I was out there
01:08:43In Lisbon during the week
01:08:45And David Reyes
01:08:45Was in the studio
01:08:46At the end
01:08:47Talking about the importance
01:08:47Of enjoying the game
01:08:49And remembering
01:08:50That's why you started
01:08:50Playing football as kids
01:08:51And we've seen
01:08:52The kind of
01:08:53The games they've been
01:08:54Playing in training
01:08:55Which appear to be
01:08:56Some kind of
01:08:56Team building exercise
01:08:58Forced fun
01:08:59It kind of feels like
01:09:00It's easier said
01:09:01Than done that
01:09:01Isn't it
01:09:01And you're absolutely
01:09:02Spot on because
01:09:03You go and watch
01:09:04Arsenal some of the time
01:09:05At the moment
01:09:06And you're absolutely right
01:09:07It's a bit too prescriptive
01:09:08During the game
01:09:09You know
01:09:09And that's slow build up
01:09:11For the back
01:09:12Every fan
01:09:13Out of the Emirates
01:09:14Is saying exactly the same thing
01:09:15Get it forward
01:09:16Now if you're one of the
01:09:17Creators up there
01:09:18The ones that they've brought in
01:09:19They've brought in
01:09:20So easy etc
01:09:20You want to get the ball
01:09:22In quick
01:09:22If you're a creative player
01:09:24And it takes 30 passes
01:09:25Along the back
01:09:26To get it to you
01:09:27There's a man marking
01:09:28In front of you
01:09:28A man marking behind
01:09:29You're not going to be able
01:09:30To do anything
01:09:30You have to move it quicker
01:09:32You have to instil something
01:09:34That I think is very hard
01:09:35For Michael Teta
01:09:36Chaos
01:09:37Try and if you can get that
01:09:40Chaos into the game
01:09:41Now they do it at corners
01:09:42That's organised chaos
01:09:43That's what they do
01:09:44If they can bring that chaos
01:09:45Into the games
01:09:46A little bit earlier
01:09:47They do it with like
01:09:4710-15 minutes
01:09:48They go quite a lot
01:09:49But at the moment
01:09:50It was a wee bit too
01:09:51Well certainly in a game
01:09:52Against Bournemouth
01:09:53It was a little bit too late
01:09:54And they've got players
01:09:55Obviously he can do it as well
01:09:57As he can do it
01:09:58They've got wingers
01:09:58All over the place
01:09:59That can do it
01:10:00But by the time
01:10:01They've hit the ball
01:10:01To them
01:10:02They're double marked
01:10:04He's got to change that
01:10:05A little bit
01:10:05And that's certainly
01:10:07The first thing
01:10:08I think he needs to do
01:10:08They haven't won in the SCF
01:10:09For 11 years
01:10:10And clearly the Carabao Cup
01:10:12Was a game that
01:10:13We'll have thought
01:10:14A lot more about
01:10:15Since Mikel Arteta
01:10:16Because Pep got the bedroom
01:10:17Tactically there
01:10:18So how do Arsenal set up
01:10:20Tactically
01:10:20I think that
01:10:22Carling Cup
01:10:22Sorry the Carling Cup
01:10:23The League Cup
01:10:24I think that was
01:10:24A massive mental obstacle
01:10:27For Arsenal
01:10:28They've really seemed
01:10:29To be struggling since then
01:10:30And Man City
01:10:31Like I say
01:10:31The absolute opposite there
01:10:32They're really going for it now
01:10:34I just think the game
01:10:35On Sunday next week
01:10:37If Man City do go and win
01:10:38That game
01:10:39I think they will then
01:10:40Go on and win the Premier League
01:10:41And it's
01:10:43Yeah it'll be some kind
01:10:44Of a turnaround
01:10:45It really will
01:10:45From
01:10:46I think if they had
01:10:47Won against Bournemouth
01:10:47What would have been
01:10:4810 points clear
01:10:49Or something like that
01:10:49It's a massive turnaround
01:10:51It really is
01:10:51They would have been 12
01:10:52Because they were 9 points yesterday
01:10:53They would have gone back down
01:10:54To 9 points today
01:10:55Obviously with a City win
01:10:56Shall we have a little look
01:10:57At the run in
01:10:57For what it's worth
01:10:58Because the way City are playing
01:11:00At the moment
01:11:00Doesn't look like they're going
01:11:01To drop points does it
01:11:02But this is
01:11:04These are the facts
01:11:05And obviously there's the extra game
01:11:06To squeeze in as well
01:11:07The Palace game
01:11:07Where we don't know
01:11:08Where that's going
01:11:09Because that depends
01:11:10On Palace's run in Europe
01:11:11Do you know the odd thing
01:11:12Up until this weekend
01:11:13I had not wavered
01:11:15It was Arsenal
01:11:16Up until
01:11:17And I'm beginning to waver now
01:11:18Just after what I've seen
01:11:20Over this weekend
01:11:20Now it's only one game
01:11:21For Arsenal
01:11:22It wasn't their best game
01:11:23And you will have blips
01:11:24In every single season
01:11:25But because there was so much
01:11:27Throughout the group
01:11:28That was uncertain about it
01:11:29You can say whatever you like
01:11:31About the run
01:11:32It's actually going to be tough
01:11:33For each one of them
01:11:34It's going to be a fight
01:11:34And a battle
01:11:35It will still go down
01:11:36In the last game
01:11:37I think if City can carry on
01:11:39Playing the way that they
01:11:39Played today against Chelsea
01:11:41It doesn't matter who they're playing
01:11:42They'll just blow everybody away
01:11:43They've got of course
01:11:44The second leg of their
01:11:45Quarter final on Tuesday
01:11:46And Wednesday
01:11:47Arsenal against
01:11:48Sporting Lisbon as well
01:11:50City have got a nice
01:11:51Clean run
01:11:51I think even that
01:11:52It takes it out of you
01:11:53It does
01:11:53I know it's an extra game
01:11:55But it's the travelling
01:11:55It's the mental fatigue
01:11:56That part can get in your head
01:11:58As well
01:11:58OK
