00:01We're looking to transform this backyard.
00:03This build's really about us spending time together.
00:06OK.
00:07I like the idea of a hot tub.
00:08What can we do to make it fun?
00:10Dude, the bottom of the drum.
00:13Oh, yeah.
00:15I guarantee it's the first time anybody in the world
00:18has done what you're doing.
00:19This is scary.
00:21It's on your face.
00:22Concrete.
00:25It'd be a dumb way to die.
00:26I don't want to be a pancake.
00:28Oh, my God, it looks amazing.
00:30One, two, three.
00:32Oh, my gosh.
00:35Making it happen today.
00:38My given name is Jared Cappy.
00:41But everyone calls me Cappy.
00:44This is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done.
00:45Everyone clear?
00:46I've been a professional builder for over 15 years.
00:50Woo-hoo!
00:51But a few years ago, I teamed up with my daughter, Alex.
00:54Whoa.
00:55It looks so good in here.
00:57We specialize in transforming unconventional objects.
01:00Whoa!
01:02I'm awake now.
01:03What if we did use a plane?
01:04Wait, really?
01:05All right, Alex.
01:06It's all yours.
01:08Into one-of-a-kind creations.
01:09Oh, my God.
01:11It's so amazing.
01:13And we get to do it for our favorite people.
01:15Love you, man.
01:16I love you.
01:16Oh, my gosh.
01:17Look it, look it, look it.
01:18But the best part...
01:19Oh!
01:20Is we get to do it together.
01:24Summers don't last long in South Dakota, so when Sprout and I get a chance to hop on
01:42the bike, we take it.
01:45And it's the perfect way to visit our new clients.
01:50Paul and Tracy are the parents of Sprout's friend, Sophia, and they also love motorcycles.
01:56Sophia is a year ahead of Sprout in school, so she's off to college soon, which means
02:01Paul and Tracy are about to be empty nesters.
02:04I don't know what kind of build they've got in mind, but I do know this, I'm going to soak
02:10up every second I get with Sprout before it's her turn to fly the coop.
02:18Well, hello, sir.
02:29Man, that is a pretty bike.
02:33Shiny.
02:34Wow.
02:35Yeah, just getting her ready to go out for a ride with Tracy in a little while.
02:38Nice, yeah, our first ride today, too.
02:40Yeah.
02:41Awesome.
02:42I'm super excited to see what we have in store.
02:43Should we go back and take a look?
02:45Yes.
02:46It was awesome, dude.
02:49Tracy, they're here.
02:50Hey, Cap.
02:51Hey, Alex.
02:52Hello, Miss Tracy.
02:53This is the cutest backyard.
02:54How are you?
02:55Good.
02:56How are you?
02:57Good.
02:58Well, yeah, so Sophia graduated this year.
02:59Yes, she did.
03:00I got a year, so tell me what it feels like.
03:02It's a little tough.
03:04You're going to have all the emotions hit you at one time.
03:08We have two kids.
03:10Jacob is a junior in college, and Sophia just graduated from high school.
03:15And we are becoming empty nesters.
03:19And it's like, where have the last 20 years gone?
03:23You're almost there.
03:24Tell me a story.
03:25I don't know much other than what Sophia told Alex.
03:27Yeah, I was told that the backyard could use some love.
03:31We're looking to transform this backyard into a fun place to hang out with each other.
03:38This build's really about us spending time together.
03:42Although we love each other very much, the time isn't always there for that one-on-one time.
03:47So we're looking for some place to connect.
03:52We are West Coast originally, so something with water in it.
03:56You always had access to water.
03:58Anything for relaxation, definitely.
04:01So what was this fenced-off area here? Is that an old garden?
04:06It is an old garden, but as we both got busier and busier with our kids, we kind of just let it go.
04:13I want a smaller space that I can manage myself.
04:17Sure.
04:18Okay, so now we got a little patio.
04:20That's a cute little patio.
04:21It'd be really nice to extend that hangout space to invite friends over.
04:27Yeah, I see you got custom slopage on your concrete there.
04:30It's buckled over the years.
04:32Not a super usable space.
04:36All right.
04:37Is there anything else that you're looking for?
04:38I just really would like to be surprised.
04:41Okay.
04:42I'm quite excited.
04:43Good.
04:44Cool.
04:45That's all I got for questions, kiddo.
04:46Yeah, if it's all right, I'd love it if we could stay for a little while and just see what we're working with.
04:51I know there's a shiny bike out there for you.
04:54You guys take as long as you like.
04:56Awesome.
04:57Space is all yours.
04:58We're out of here.
04:59Awesome.
05:01Bye.
05:02Bye.
05:03Have a good ride up the canyon.
05:04See you guys.
05:05Sure.
05:06See ya.
05:07A little shady spot.
05:08Yeah.
05:09Okay.
05:10We've got two empty nesters who want to reconnect and not a lot of space to work with.
05:19Mm-hmm.
05:20We know that they like the element of relaxation because they haven't really had a chance to
05:25allocate much time for that in the past, what, 20 years?
05:28Kids ruin everything, dude.
05:29Um.
05:30Okay.
05:32We also need a space that has something with water.
05:35If the goal is relaxation, I like the idea of a hot tub thinking about just end of the
05:40day relaxing.
05:41But what can we do that's interesting?
05:43What can we do to make it fun?
05:48What if we, dude, the bottom of the drum of the beehive.
05:53Oh, yeah.
05:54Wow.
05:55That is so beautiful.
05:56A couple of years back, we turned an old concrete mixing drum into a beehive hangout
06:03for our friend Donovan and his family.
06:05Oh, my gosh.
06:06But we didn't use the bottom of the drum.
06:09It's eight foot in diameter.
06:11That's easily four people.
06:13I like that.
06:14So thinking about the drum, we need a seat inside it and then maybe something to, like,
06:19protect the rim.
06:20It'd be nice to have a little bit of a shelf around the top.
06:22Yeah, yeah.
06:23I think we could bring this concrete drum full circle.
06:25I know a guy who handcrafts really unique high-end concrete furniture.
06:30Let me make a call about that one.
06:31Okay.
06:32But supporting it, because this thing's gonna weigh eight, ten thousand pounds, that's
06:37including the people, any concrete fixtures, and the water inside.
06:42Mm-hmm.
06:43So to support it, I think we're gonna need a pretty substantial column that will concrete
06:47in the ground for sure.
06:48What about the heat source?
06:49I can put fire under it.
06:51Wait, like actual fire?
06:52Yeah.
06:53Where would we get that from?
06:54Well, I know we can use natural gas.
06:56Right.
06:57I don't have a burner solution.
07:02Okay.
07:03Let me think about that.
07:05We're also gonna need a custom deck for easy access to the tub.
07:08Okay.
07:09Yeah.
07:10And then we also need to contain the garden ones.
07:14So let's do a couple little raised beds or something.
07:17Yes.
07:18The plan is to build Paul and Tracy a one-of-a-kind backyard oasis with a standout centerpiece.
07:26To do this, we're transforming the base of our concrete drum into a truly original hot tub,
07:33complete with the unique concrete fixtures for a footrest, seating, and shelving.
07:38We'll mount the tub on a support column that'll also house a customized burner.
07:43We'll surround it with a tailored deck and privacy wall and add low-maintenance garden
07:48boxes for Tracy.
07:50Finally, we'll redo and expand the crumbling concrete patio.
07:54Easier said than done, though.
07:56Pulling all this off in this tight backyard space is gonna take some serious creativity
08:01and a whole lot of hustle.
08:03I love it.
08:04It'll be really exciting.
08:06Okay.
08:07We can't wait to get started.
08:09I'm dropping Sprout off at Granny Flats to work on some personal touches for Paul and Tracy.
08:15That's also where the concrete drum base ended up.
08:18So I'll take that over to my master welding buddy Rodney's shop to start fabricating the parts we need.
08:24Ready for a name?
08:25Yep.
08:26I'm gonna need a bigger ride for that job, though.
08:36So we've got the bottom portion of this concrete drum in the back of the truck.
08:40We actually took it away from Rodney's.
08:42What are the chances you still have the bottom of that concrete drum?
08:46Oh, now you want it?
08:48We didn't end up using it for that build.
08:51So this morning we're bringing it back to Rodney's shop.
08:54It's sort of like a bad penny for him.
08:56Like, he keeps turning up.
08:57What?
08:58You can take that away from my place.
09:09I swear.
09:10Last time.
09:11Okay.
09:12I'll walk you through it if you want to see.
09:14Yeah.
09:15Okay.
09:16So I've got a real plan this time.
09:17It's not in writing or anything, but I have a real plan.
09:19As long as I get it on paper or something.
09:22On a napkin.
09:23How about a drawing?
09:24So it's a hot tub.
09:25Okay.
09:26We'll have a central support column.
09:28Cool.
09:29But there'll be a burner in here that heats this thing up.
09:34Ah.
09:35What I'd like you guys to fabricate is we're gonna have a plate like this that the drum sits on,
09:42right?
09:43And we need some brackets made that's gonna support a cast concrete edge, like a lip.
09:49Sure.
09:50And then inside the drum, we're gonna do another bracket, and there's gonna be a seat.
09:55Okay.
09:56So can we unload it?
09:58For the last time.
10:00Nice promise.
10:01Pinky promise.
10:02Last time.
10:03Last time.
10:04Okay.
10:05Thanks, dude.
10:06There you go.
10:07That's a good pick.
10:08All right.
10:09Fantastic.
10:10Awesome.
10:11Cool.
10:12Thank you guys.
10:13Appreciate it.
10:14Well, it's quite the project, ain't it?
10:15Yeah, it is.
10:16Rodney and his brother Austin jumped right to work removing the old concrete mixing blades,
10:23and fabricating the brackets that'll support the concrete fixtures.
10:24So I'm on my way over to Paul and Tracy's place.
10:26Paul wanted to help get us started, so him and a couple of buddies tore out the old concrete
10:31pad and hauled it away.
10:32I love it when clients want to jump in and get their hands dirty.
10:39And now we're gonna drill a three-foot diameter hole five feet deep, and that's gonna have
10:46the pipe centered in it, and that's what's gonna support our new hot tub.
10:52So kiddo, hold me on the fence there.
10:53Okay.
10:54So we've got four footed deck, give or take.
10:55Right.
10:56And we've got eight footed tub, which brings us to the bottom.
10:57We're gonna drill.
10:58We're gonna drill.
10:59Okay.
11:00So we're gonna drill a three-foot diameter hole five feet deep.
11:02And that's gonna have the pipe centered in it, and that's what's gonna support our
11:05new hot tub.
11:07So kiddo, hold me on the fence there.
11:15Okay.
11:16So we've got four footed deck, give or take.
11:19Right.
11:20And we've got eight-footed tub, which brings us to the 12-foot spot.
11:24And then we've got another four-foot, and this is where the deck ends.
11:27Yep, I think it works.
11:29Okay.
11:30I'll mark our spot.
11:31You go jump in the skid steer.
11:33Okay.
11:33Cool.
11:33That thing's huge.
11:51So if one can't tell by the look on my face, I'm a little stressed.
11:54Just because this is a bigger auger, it's three-foot in diameter, which is a lot bigger
12:03than the ones I've used in general.
12:07So we're really trying to make sure that we do this right the first time.
12:11So, yeah, hopefully this goes well.
12:14Slow is smooth.
12:16Smooth is fast.
12:16Okay, kids, so we're going right for this blue stake.
12:25Center line, please.
12:28Okay, go ahead and go right down for the tip of my stake.
12:31Boom.
12:32Okay.
12:33So you've used that little one before, the 12-incher.
12:36This one takes way more power.
12:38So the challenge with that is you need to throttle this guy almost all the way up,
12:42but that also makes your controls...
12:45Super touchy.
12:45Real touchy.
12:46Because you have more hydraulic fluid flowing through, so...
12:49Okay.
12:49All right.
12:50Good?
12:51Okay.
12:51Okay.
12:53Let's drill a hole, kid.
12:59This is a much bigger auger than Alex is used to working on.
13:02Yep.
13:03Yep, yep, this full's in.
13:04So I'm glad she's nervous.
13:09There you go.
13:10Now all she has to do is prove to herself that she's got this.
13:13I'm going to have you try to pull some out.
13:26Look at that chocolate cake.
13:29It's so satisfying.
13:32Love it.
13:32All right, kiddo.
13:33I'm headed to my buddy Kent's place because he said he has a pipe that might work for the big hot tub support car.
13:45We're going to take it back to the shop and start fabricating it to accept the burner that's going to be a heat source for this hot tub.
13:52I never miss an opportunity to poke around a boneyard.
13:59There's some kinds of stuff back here.
14:01He's holding out on me.
14:03Look at all this stuff.
14:04I spend all day here.
14:06Shaker screens, all kinds of stuff.
14:09Hi, rabbit.
14:11Sorry.
14:12Just looking for treasures.
14:13Okie dokie.
14:19Good news, bad news.
14:21Good news, we're 20 inches across, which is great.
14:25Bad news is we're just over 14 feet.
14:28Now we only need about 6 feet for the build, but I need to get it back to my shop to cut it to size.
14:34Problem is I can't haul this length of pipe and the skid steer at the same time on the trailer.
14:41Hmm.
14:45Alright, I know what I'm going to do.
14:50While Cappy's picking up pipes, I'm on the way to go pick up our client's daughter, Sophia.
14:56We know how much Paul and Tracy love taking motorcycle trips together.
15:00And Sophia has an Uncle Kevin who we've looped in because he has a motorcycle shop.
15:05And I'm hoping that we can find a part that we can transform into a handle that'll turn on the burner for the hot tub.
15:11I think that would be really cool.
15:17Hello.
15:18Hi.
15:18Hey Ho.
15:27Hey Ho!
15:30Rodney's shop is a lot closer to here than my shop.
15:35So, I'm just gonna take this to Rodney's shop.
15:40But he doesn't know I'm coming.
15:42Surprise.
15:43I'm so glad we can do this project for your mom and dad I feel like they should have something
16:01special because like my mom's heart stuff oh yeah she had a hole in her heart right yeah
16:08it sounds like that it helped kind of bring everyone together and realize that like it's
16:14better to spend time when we have it right yeah which is probably a good thing as well yeah yeah
16:20hey girls what's going on I was wondering if we could possibly root around here a little bit
16:32because we're looking for a part that we can use for a handle oh I think we got some for you guys
16:37around here okay awesome help yourselves we could start over here something like this might be fun
16:44maybe this could like turn something on oh yeah yeah I'll make a pile over here okay we can look
16:52over here I think these are my dad's old handlebars cool so that's like something that he actually had
16:59this is definitely in the pile I'm not too far from Rodney's shop with this pipe but instead
17:15of driving all the way around the front taking a little shortcut pioneer cross-country sort of thing
17:21going on it'll be fine I just gotta squeeze past these unused parts of my old builds
17:37hi buddy oh man what are you doing breaking this
17:54I brought you some pipe here I am trying to get rid of something and then you bring something else
18:07I promise this won't stay for long this is the support for the hot tub okay this is my stem
18:13but this we need to cut off about six feet okay and then we need to cut out these holes
18:19so inside this pipe is the burner I need to put three or four of these all the way around it
18:25so air can get in as this burner does its job sure awesome well I'll just stash it out of the way for
18:31the moment for some reason I know this won't be the last time you drop something off this is for you
18:35Rodney thanks buddy you know sometimes it helps if you have two people oh man
18:43okay I'm done thanks dude we'll get to work
18:48so I'm on my way over to granny flats to meet my buddy Brandon he makes concrete furniture beautiful
19:07pieces of art his work is durable and treated to be completely waterproof he is a concrete aficionado
19:16he just drove up from Kansas to help with this build and today we're gonna form up these three
19:22concrete rings that'll be the footrest a seat and the rim for the hot tub I'm really excited to see
19:28him what's up handsome what's up dude it's good to see you oh man thank you so much for making the
19:36trip yeah man I'm so excited about this I love the elegance of like your furniture and the stuff you
19:41do with sort of this like big chunky industrial metal tub I guarantee it's the first time anybody in the
19:48world has done what you're doing so I'm happy to be part of it yeah I love it for this hot tub
19:53project we wanted to do something really elegant so we came up with these one inch thick concrete
19:59seating elements so right now he's putting together these giant tables using three-quarter
20:05inch plywood and leveled perfectly you ready yep the reason we do that is this stuff is all self
20:11leveling and then you don't want it to slope to one side or the other because that'll make your pour
20:15off looks good and then the forms themselves get set on those tables fragile little things uh-huh
20:22tape them down silicone in place let the silicone cure for at least six hours so tomorrow we'll
20:27actually pour the pieces of concrete hey kiddo hello hi what do you got I have motorcycle parts
20:41from Uncle Kevin's shop first some handlebars off of Paul's old bike oh that's fun I like that
20:49disc brakes a random red spring that looked cool dude fun yeah a bike chain I like that
20:57oh I know what it is you put your helmet on it dude fun and then I talked with uh Sophia a little
21:02bit learned about Tracy and how she had some heart issues and had heart surgery she has a tattoo
21:10across the top of her chest that's a heart with wings out of it to hide the scars wow yeah I was thinking
21:17that I could connect with Aunt Wren and maybe we can think about some ideas for some sort of art piece
21:23that we can do to help honor that for her because I think that's that's pretty important wow yeah good
21:29idea kid all right well let's get some supper and we'll get at it tomorrow yeah
21:32Rodney and I used his fancy robot arm torch to cut out the air holes in the hot tub support pipe
21:52now I want one of these then he welded the base plate for the hot tub on top of the pipe
22:01now we're cutting the pipe to the right length and I'll hustle it over to Paul and Tracy's house
22:10for a big day on this build thanks brother appreciate it it's concrete pour day we're
22:19using concrete to set the pipe into the whole sprout duck and we're also going to pour the
22:25new patio Paul and Tracy have agreed to stay at a friend's house so they stay out of our way and
22:30then we can actually surprise them that means we have to work a little quicker so we can get them back
22:35home today's gonna be an awesome day of course my concrete guys are never late so we're gonna get
22:43the mini off we have to pick up the giant pipe in the back of the truck rig it up with straps and
22:47set it in the hole so making it happen so big challenge today is just getting everything done in
22:59time we never want to make these concrete guys wait these guys show up especially with this giant pump
23:06we want to be real respectful of what we're doing in the time that we said we'd be ready so it's sort
23:14of all hands on deck to get this piece done are we doing I think we're pretty good I'd suck it in a
23:20little bit cap we're centered in the hole I think it looks good all right to do thanks for coming now
23:33it's time to pour and who amongst us will handle the pump trucks massive boom all right kid we ready I
23:40think so that's what I'm talking about I told you Alex never shrinks from a challenge and I'm proud of
23:46her because she volunteered to wrestle with 10 tons of concrete probably need to be on this side of
23:57this route it's a little bit of a rodeo huh uh-huh this is a lot more exciting than I would have imagined
24:03this is scary do you remember what you told me the first time we poured concrete that this is not on
24:09the list of dream jobs still isn't I'm a bit winded because there is no way to stop it once it's coming
24:16it's on your face concrete so as one can see I learned that lesson the hard way
24:24the patio is done and while the guys smooth it out I'm gonna pour the concrete for our hot tub base
24:33so we're pumping a little bit of concrete inside the tube and a little outside the tube because
24:39I want it to be equal pressure I don't want to fill up the middle and have it wander so as I'm going
24:43I'm checking level we have to make this perfect because the hot tub itself sits on top of this
24:50and full of water it's gonna weigh about 10,000 pounds
24:52today we're pouring the elegant concrete rings that'll be the footrest the seat and the rim of
25:12our hot tub ready I'm really excited this whole thing is all new for me we're mixing up a special
25:19kind of concrete because these pieces are only one inch thick but they need to be tough enough to
25:25last under water and Brandon just told me we need 50 pounds of ice it turns out adding icy water to
25:32the concrete slows down the curing process which gives it a smoother texture so we're gonna load 10
25:40of these bags dry and then we have to weigh out the water the reason we do weight is it's precise so like a
25:47conventional concrete is more like cooking and yours is like baking yeah this is gonna age gracefully it's
25:54gonna live forever
26:01there we go
26:05there we go
26:09cool
26:13alright you wanna kill it?
26:15that looks a lot like cake batter
26:20so I'm gonna pour in one spot
26:21okay
26:22I'm just gonna let it flow out
26:24that is awesome
26:26I can see why in the beginning we worked so hard to make these tables so level
26:34it's because four pieces come together to make one big ring
26:38so when they meet up with each other then they're perfect
26:57Cappy built the wall that'll go behind the hot tub to give Tracy and Paul some privacy from their neighbors
27:03now Aunt Ren and I are going to decorate it with a mural that has a special meaning for the family
27:09normally the gaps in the slatted design would make painting on it difficult so I'm thinking outside the box
27:15hello
27:17what are you wearing?
27:19I'm wearing our solution to our issue of trying to superimpose an image on here
27:24really?
27:25mhm
27:26so I can take like an image and I can download it into the program and I can superimpose it here
27:31alright let's get started then
27:33so I'm currently superimposing a picture of Tracy's tattoo that she got after her heart surgery
27:40from talking with Sophia it really brought their family together
27:44so we thought it would be really nice if we put her tattoo on the boards to remind her that she's made it through
27:51and she is so strong for it
27:53I mean it looks good
27:58Rodney just finished adding the brackets to the concrete drum
28:11let's get it out of here so you never see this again
28:13yeah
28:14right there
28:15now Ruby and Omai are taking it out for a multi-step makeover
28:20I got the tank right there on the trailer
28:23my co-pilot he's not helping me do much of anything
28:27first step sandblasting
28:29this deep clean will strip off all the old paint and grime
28:33next step powder coating at my buddy Brian's shop
28:37this is a finely ground powder that is baked onto the drum
28:41to protect it from South Dakota's toughest weather
28:44once the powder is applied is off to the oven
28:47where the high heat bonds the coating to the drum
28:50when it cools I get a call for pickup
28:53oh my god it looks amazing
28:57this is perfect
28:59from gritty old concrete drum to custom hot tub centerpiece
29:03the transformation is complete
29:05time to move this hot tub into its new home
29:08so we're gonna fly it into the backyard
29:15the challenge is today it's only Dustin and I
29:18Ruby's out of town and Sprout's finding the garden boxes for Tracy
29:22so we only have two of us to do a job that should probably take four
29:27wish me luck
29:29haha
29:32what do you think?
29:33wow this looks great
29:35Rodney did a nice job
29:36okay so I have a plan
29:38we're gonna use the mini to carry the tub into the backyard
29:42but I wanna test it first
29:44I just wanna pick it up off this cradle just a little bit
29:46to see where we're at on tipping weight
29:48gotcha
29:49okay
29:50so I know the mini will handle the weight of the drum
29:53the challenge is in order to accommodate the size of the tub
29:56the boom of the mini needs to extend pretty far
29:59sort of think about holding a bowling ball right here
30:01versus holding a bowling ball arm's length
30:04it's a little tougher to do
30:05we're just gonna pick it up real slow
30:07we don't want the machine to tip
30:08and then we'll track it into the backyard
30:10we got this
30:11we got this
30:12how does it feel?
30:18how does it feel?
30:19I like that as long as we don't swing
30:27am I clear?
30:28yeah
30:29okay I'm coming down
30:38I'm gonna set her down
30:39now we need to access the bottom of the tub to bolt on the mounting plate
30:48that'll connect it into the support pipe
30:50I'm using the mini to tilt the tub so we're not working under 2,000 pounds of steel
30:56that'd be a dumb way to die getting crushed by a concrete mixer hot tub
31:00I don't wanna be a pancake
31:01I don't wanna be a pancake
31:02this Dustin cake
31:03okay
31:04perfect
31:13I like that
31:15the next part is we have to bolt the first plate to the bottom of this
31:20Rodney left this plate on top of the base
31:22and then this plate then gets bolted to the second plate which is welded to the base
31:27well let's look at the plates
31:30so if this
31:33wait
31:38I messed up
31:40so one thing I forgot to tell Rodney
31:44I need a hole in the mounting plates
31:47so the flame hits the tub
31:50oh
31:52oh
32:02hola amigo
32:03hello
32:04thank you
32:05you betcha
32:06well
32:07you built exactly what I asked
32:08I just forgot to ask for a hole
32:10it happens
32:11yes well I appreciate that
32:13so Rodney to the rescue
32:14yet again
32:15that's the kind of guy he is
32:17he came over with his mobile rig
32:19he has got a hundred feet of hose
32:22and he is going to cut out his piece for us
32:32boom
32:34now we will cut the plate that mounts on the tub
32:36he just spart a kick it out of the hole
32:44thank you brother appreciate it dude
32:45yeah we'll see you
32:46talk to you in a bit
32:49get that last one
32:53okay awesome
32:55alright so we got the mounting plate on
32:57all right tracking towards you
33:07stop
33:08okay really slow
33:10okay
33:16it's in
33:17let's do it again
33:18let's do it put some bolts in it
33:19quick
33:23dude
33:24nice
33:25alright
33:26concrete tops are next
33:27sweet
33:29it's warm
33:30on the scale of one to hot pockets
33:32how are we
33:33oh you can handle it
33:34okay
33:36the first one that goes in is our big donut
33:37and that's the floor of the hot tub
33:39we'll tip it down
33:40we just want to be really careful with it
33:47there
33:48alright
33:49concrete donut
33:50so what's next is the bench pieces
33:52four of them that'll go in
33:53we'll dry fit those to make sure they look great
33:56there we go
33:59lastly we'll dry fit the lip around the top of the tub
34:03got it?
34:04yep
34:05okay
34:06awesome
34:07nice
34:08nice
34:10so the next step is to get everything perfectly level
34:13and we'll do that with shim and silicone
34:15and then the weight of these pieces on the silicone cures
34:18that's what holds these things down
34:20awesome
34:31so back at granny flats today working on this burner plan
34:35for the hot tub
34:36the hot tub
34:37we went to a commercial kitchen supply store
34:38and got this giant burner
34:40so this is 160,000 BTUs
34:43BTU stands for British Thermal Unit
34:47it's a common way that we measure heat
34:50so for reference the kitchen burner that you have at home
34:53is 7,000 BTUs
34:55so this burner is 20 plus times bigger
34:59that's more than enough to heat up our hot tub
35:01so the part I want to work on right now is how we actually turn the gas valve
35:08so the girls went over to Uncle Kevin's shop and came up with some motorcycle parts
35:13that I think we'll be able to use on this
35:16the million dollar question is which piece is it going to be?
35:18we've got this as an option
35:20Vinny what do you think?
35:24the handlebars
35:25handlebars
35:26handlebars
35:27we could you know maybe cut this off here
35:29and use this as a like a throttle
35:31like
35:33I think we'll do that
35:35now that the hot tub's landed
35:46the next mission is to make it part of a backyard paradise
35:49that's both functional and easy on the eyes
35:52step one is crafting a custom deck that hugs the tub's curves
35:57we've got all this blocking in here
36:00that we have to do because we're going to curve this decking around the tub
36:04then we need to bring the heat
36:08so we've made this custom throttle
36:11that'll stick down through the deck onto the valve
36:14and this is how you'll actuate the burner and light it
36:18let's see if this thing lights up
36:21the gas line has been run
36:23it's under the ground
36:24and it's in our sprinkler box
36:26I have to get this shaft all the way down through this decking
36:30through the lid of that box
36:32and to touch the top of the valve
36:35okay
36:37here goes
36:38so that's wide open
36:42we have ignition
36:45now we finish installing the railing
36:51it's 95 today so I'm hiding under this deck in the shade
37:03and after a quick wardrobe change because my shirt looks like I took a dip in the tub
37:08Scotty and I put up the privacy fence with a special touch for Tracy
37:12so I'm excited to see what she thinks when she sees it for the first time
37:15through
37:16awesome
37:17Sprout and I are up bright and early putting the final touches on Paul and Tracy's hot tub haven
37:31we're hoping it will provide the perfect spark to kick off the next chapter of their adventures together
37:38I like your lights kiddo
37:41I know right it looks super sharp
37:44I love love love that
37:46same here obviously she'll recognize it but I'm interested to see how she'll react
37:50react to it
37:51react to it
37:52you want to get them?
37:53yeah
37:54okay cool
37:55okay
38:00so wait here and once we hit three
38:03then it's ready
38:05okay quick quick quick quick
38:07yes
38:08okay quick
38:09you're right here
38:10okay
38:11all right
38:12what are we doing?
38:13counting to three
38:14one
38:15two
38:16three
38:17oh my gosh
38:20oh
38:21wow
38:34hey you two
38:35hi
38:36there's no words
38:41sit down
38:42give me a run
38:48oh this is awesome
38:51this is her
38:52that's amazing kid
38:54thank you
38:56yeah
38:57it's like at a restaurant when a food comes out and it gets real quiet
39:01it's always a good sign
39:02it is
39:03what do you think?
39:04wow
39:05it's so amazing
39:07and you even have a concrete patio without a crack in it
39:10that's amazing
39:13yes
39:14well we took what you guys had said and thought a lot about the empty nester piece of it
39:19because it's a natural part of you raise your children to be capable fully formed adult humans and they're leaving now
39:26and then this idea that you guys get to relearn you
39:30yeah
39:31right you know the next chapter
39:33chapter
39:34but also you guys talked about entertaining
39:36so we actually expanded the patio three feet farther this way
39:40and a couple feet out this way so friends can come and hang out
39:44that's awesome
39:45yeah
39:46and then we took your vegetable garden
39:48we cleaned that up
39:49and then we brought in some of these boxes for you
39:51so easier to work on you don't have to crawl around
39:53oh my gosh
39:54it's amazing
39:55but yeah so we ultimately decided we wanted to tie the patio into this hot tub space for you guys
40:00just a little place you could come at the end of the day and relax
40:03very cool
40:04and then the privacy screen was Sprout's idea
40:06mmhmm
40:08yes
40:09Sophia and I sourced some parts from your old bike
40:12and on the way out there she was explaining the story of your heart
40:16and I worked with my aunt Ren to have it on the back wall
40:19I can't believe you did that
40:21the mural that Alex painted for me
40:25I don't know if I'll ever be able to say in words how much it means to me
40:31the surgery made us more aware our time could be short with each other
40:38and Tracy is our heart so it's extra special
40:44it's pretty cool
40:45that is so cool
40:46the top rim on the tub we did custom made cast concrete
40:51very cool
40:52so there's a cast bench inside and a little place for your feet
40:55that is so cool
40:56oh I'm so excited
40:57guaranteed no one else has one of these
40:59no
41:00no one off
41:01absolutely
41:02yeah
41:03there's a lot of welding
41:04a lot of fabric
41:05oh yeah
41:06wow
41:07this is amazing
41:08look at it
41:09holy smokes
41:10they obviously know us quite well with our modern clean lines
41:15the darker deep colors
41:18just a space where it's very comfortable we can come and sit relax
41:23to heat this you tapped onto the side of your house and brought a gas line under
41:27a commercial burner off of a kitchen stove
41:30there's a grip off my old handlebars
41:32there you spotted it
41:34so this turns turns the gas on and off
41:40oh my
41:41and then that's how you light it
41:43shut up
41:44so from the tub if it's getting a little cold open her up if it's getting a little hot run her down
41:49seriously
41:50mm-hmm
41:51i love it
41:52it's amazing
41:53i couldn't have asked for anything cooler
41:56i love it
41:59thanks brother
42:00thank you
42:01well done
42:02thank you darling
42:04thank you
42:05okay
42:06alright kid
42:07this is gonna be a great space for us and some quality time and i think we should go enjoy it now
42:14let's do it
42:15okay
42:16let's go
42:17i know look at these nice chairs
42:21oh yeah
42:23yeah i could do this
42:25this is nice
42:27for sure
42:28what is this thing
42:31this is a robot arm that allows you to cut out custom stuff and here i've got a sign for cappy
42:37you know he likes to store everything here
42:39he left his shipping containers
42:41from the swimming pool
42:43the grain bin project
42:44the beehive material
42:46a little growing collection back here i should probably come take care of
42:49cappy's storage fee
42:51one dollar per foot
42:53that's funny
