00:00On this episode of Hot Rod, Garage,
00:03it's HRG Day!
00:05That's right.
00:06Yeah.
00:07Yeah!
00:30Welcome back to Hot Rod, Garage.
00:33I'm Alex Taylor, and this is Lucky Costa.
00:35Hello.
00:36Welcome back.
00:37We are almost to HRG Day.
00:39Things have really grown over the last three years,
00:42and we do have big plans.
00:43So we have opened it up to 150 race entries.
00:47It's going to be bracket-style racing.
00:49We're going to divide it into two classes.
00:51We're going to have cage and no cage.
00:53Should I be in no class?
00:55Sure.
00:56Okay.
00:57So then when those classes come down to a couple of their winners,
01:00we're actually going to swap it all around,
01:02and we're going to have it where the winners of those classes
01:05actually raise some of our friends' Motor Trend talent
01:08that you guys may also know of.
01:11People like David Freiberger.
01:12Steve Dulcich.
01:14Derek Bieri.
01:15Newbern and Cotton.
01:16Newbern and Cotton, huh?
01:17I have to put those two together.
01:18They're kind of our team.
01:19They're going together?
01:20Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:21Who else? Is Dirt Heavy Day going to be there?
01:22Yes, Dirt Head Dave.
01:23He's going to be there.
01:24He's probably just going to drive off the track and just keep going.
01:26Yeah.
01:27Just find a jump somewhere?
01:28You're probably right, right into the dirt.
01:29Right.
01:30So we're going to narrow all of that down to a couple people
01:32to race at the very end for the big prize of winner of HRG Day,
01:36which is very exciting for us.
01:38So we are doing it again in Bakersfield with cleat and crew.
01:42But the kicker this time is this is an actual event hosted at the track,
01:47which is an NHRA section track.
01:49So we have to follow all of the tech that NHRA says that we have to.
01:53So on our own cars here, two of the ones that are going to get the most work this week is the Savoy,
01:57which isn't going to get a ton of work, but we do need to swap the converter out
02:01because the last time we raced this was at Roadkill Knights on Woodward on a street.
02:05So we had a looser converter for those conditions.
02:08Now we're going to be on a track, so we're going to swap that out.
02:10Have you even made a quarter mile past this?
02:11I actually not.
02:12Are you going to?
02:13I am.
02:14I'm happy I don't fit in that car.
02:15We'll finish that out this week.
02:16And then on the Nova over here, we're going to go through and do some different maintenance stuff to it.
02:21If you remember the last time we had it out, we broke our trans brake button so it couldn't back up.
02:25So we're going to fix that.
02:26And we have some new wheels and tires coming in to fill up those wheel tubs that are in the back.
02:30You know, generally when we do an episode, we're doing one or maybe two cars.
02:34I think the list is a little bit longer this time.
02:37Yeah, so while these have very little work, the other cars and our friends' cars, they've left us with some of their stuff to get ready.
02:43So we're going to line up all of our cars out front and go through and figure out, oh, okay, this one needs this to pass tech.
02:50This one needs this.
02:51A lot of them are going to share similar things that they need, like roll cage padding or maybe battery boxes.
02:56You know, Hot Rod Garage, this is probably going to need some of the basic stuff.
02:59It's going to need overflow bottles, battery tie downs, the basic stuff.
03:03Yeah, so while none of that is super crazy, it's still a lot to get ready.
03:06Wait, seat belts?
03:08Oh, yeah, those are important.
03:09Yeah.
03:10Hot Rod Garage.
03:11Well, none of that is too intense work.
03:13It's just a lot of work to do in a little bit of time.
03:16So with that said, happy HRG Day, Eve?
03:20Woo!
03:21Can we call it that?
03:22Yeah.
03:23Yeah, Eve.
03:24The big holiday is upon us, which means we have a lot of work to do.
03:27Let's get to it.
03:33This is the last time you guys have seen the Savoy.
03:35It has been refined.
03:36It has been tweaked.
03:37It's got really good rear suspension now where it should be a little bit more stiff.
03:41It's NHRA certified now, which is great because we're going to the track.
03:44So we have an 850 cert on the chassis, meaning that it has all the bars and meets all the requirements to go to an NHRA certified track.
03:52So we can legally run up to an 850.
03:55And I actually feel like we have the potential of seeing an 8 out of this.
03:59So we're going to be pulling the transmission out.
04:01We're going to be swapping converter over.
04:02We have a freshly specced one for the conditions that we're going to from Gear Star Yank Converter.
04:07I'm just going to go ahead and get the belly pan down.
04:09So I have to be able to get to the converter and flywheel bolts.
04:12That way I can unhook that, get ready to drop the transmission.
04:15Now belly pan, I am a huge advocate of this.
04:17So it's basically there if you drop any oil just from maybe, you know, something's dripping,
04:22or if you have like a catastrophic failure where something comes out the bottom of the oil pan.
04:26We usually just line our belly pans with pig mat.
04:29You can purchase it online or some stores will have it.
04:32And it's just very absorbent.
04:33You can just swap it out, tape it in.
04:35It's a simple, easy way to do it.
04:43A couple of things I know about tech inspection.
04:45A, no holes in the firewall.
04:47It's called a firewall for a reason.
04:49It's to keep a potential fire in the engine compartment out of the passenger compartment.
04:53I see a giant hole right there.
04:54We're going to have to plug that up.
04:55I think they frown on duct tape.
04:57So we're going to have to step up our game with maybe a little aluminum plate,
05:00just bolt it right to the firewall.
05:01We'll be able to handle that.
05:02Something else is overflow bottle.
05:05This can't just go down to nowhere.
05:07This has to go to somewhere.
05:08No leaks, no oil, no transmission, and no coolant or water.
05:12So we need to put a bottle at the end of this hose.
05:14The other thing is battery secure.
05:17This looks secure.
05:18It's sitting in the factory tray.
05:20If you look at it from this side, clearly has the bracket installed.
05:24However, the bracket is 100% upside down.
05:26It looks like this is exactly how it should be.
05:29Looks like it should grab.
05:30However, it doesn't.
05:32It goes like this.
05:33Presses right on the corner of the battery.
05:36And it's designed that when you tighten up the bolt, it actually pushes the battery further into the locking position.
05:43And battery secure.
05:46All right, so transmission coming out.
05:49If you remember originally when we first built this, this car was set up to be a manual.
05:54We went through a couple of renditions of that, but we have our Power Glide here.
05:57So a simple two-speed built by Jake's Transmissions.
06:00It's going to be great for what we want to do with the car and actually like make consistent fast passes.
06:05So I've got everything disconnected, just checking my lines and wires here.
06:10Looks like we're good to go.
06:14So here's our new converter.
06:15Here's our old converter.
06:16This is one that Jake specced and built when he brought us the Power Glide originally.
06:21And this is our new converter from Gear Star.
06:24It's a yank billet converter.
06:25So when we had this built and swapped to the Power Glide, we were going to race Roadkill Knights, which is on Woodward Avenue.
06:31It's a very minimally prepped surface, meaning it's not got a lot of like your drag strip bite and grip that you're probably used to seeing.
06:38So when you're there on a no prep type surface or a light prep type surface, you can't overpower your tire.
06:44The second you overpower your tire and you're not moving forward down the track, now you're going slower.
06:49A Lucia converter absorbs some of that power and doesn't put it all back into the back tires.
06:55Kind of like gives you a little bit of a cushion.
06:58So you can get off the line, not get too much wheel speed.
07:01The tighter converter is more of a one to one.
07:04So the tighter you go, the more power is going to that back tire.
07:08So this one is going to be perfect for our track conditions.
07:11It's tighter.
07:12We have some data that we're working on now.
07:14And Gear Star in combination with Jake actually talked back and forth and we're like,
07:18this is what we did on this one.
07:19This is what we think we should do on this one.
07:21So I think we have the perfect converter to get us a really good starting point for our first quarter mile passes in the Savoy.
07:27I'm excited about that.
07:28So now I'm going to go ahead and put this one in.
07:30I've checked our bolt pattern.
07:31I checked our mounting height from the pad to the end of our snout.
07:35I think everything should be good to go.
07:37That's what happens when you have people working together.
07:40All right, time to go in.
07:44That was the clonk that I was looking for.
07:48Transmission and new converter are in the Savoy.
07:53It's going to be so nice now.
07:56I'm actually really thinking it's going to be the right combination.
07:59But that makes me think we have a whole fleet of cars that needs to be teched.
08:04Our friends that are going to be racing with us at HRG Day have a set of cars that also have some problems that need to be addressed.
08:11So Fleet Tech coming up as we get ready for HRG Day real soon.
08:22All right, HRG Day is upon us.
08:24This year we decided to open it up to the public with 150 race spots available, plus car show spots, plus spectator tickets.
08:31We're trying to make it bigger and better than ever, which means we need a whole fleet of cars, which is what's behind us.
08:37So the way it's going to work is there's going to be bracket racing during the day.
08:40And then as there's winners determined in two different classes there, we're going to bring in our friends cars that you may be familiar with.
08:48So starting back here, we have our Typhoon.
08:51We have Derek from Roadworthy Rescues with his DeLorean back there.
08:55Interesting choice.
08:56We have Cotton and Newbridge Trans Am here, which just went 198 miles an hour, but that was at the standing mile.
09:01And then we have Rick Flairmont, also another one of their cars.
09:04We have our Grand National.
09:06So because we're going to be at Bakersfield at the Famosa drag strip, we have to pass NHRA Tech because we're actually having an event, which means we have to follow the rules.
09:17Starting from over here to over here, we get quicker, slower to quicker, which means as we go from there to there, we have a lot more tech we need to pass.
09:27We actually had Cleet's guy come out from the track and he told us, here's some things that you guys are missing on tech.
09:33So over here with the Typhoon, not really too much.
09:36We just got to make sure the windows roll up.
09:38Once we get over to the Grand National, some more pieces we need to add.
09:41We'll get into that later.
09:42We have a lot of very basic stuff that we need to hit.
09:45Once you start to go faster, like say the Savoy, there's a lot more tech involved with that.
09:50We'll get into that later.
09:51But those two in the shop, the Nova and the Savoy, actually get pretty close to passing tech.
09:56These back here, they need some work.
09:58All right, sweet.
10:08So this is our DeLorean here, which is pretty rad.
10:10Actually, it's Derek's DeLorean that he really decided to go back to the future with.
10:14So this has an LS in it, but it has carburetors.
10:16All cool, all great, except the NHRA tech said that it has to have dual return springs on both the front and the rear carburetor.
10:24This one does not.
10:25The thoughts behind this is it will pull the throttle or close the butterflies in the carburetor back to the closed position.
10:32As you're racing, you're going to have your foot to the floor, wide open throttle.
10:35You want your default to be closed because, trust me, full throttle, top end, not a good day.
10:41The thought behind two is that if one breaks, now you got another one.
10:44Now, it'll pass tech.
10:46Derek, will it work or not? I don't know.
10:48On to the next, let's call on Cotton and Newburn's cars.
10:51Wow.
10:52That's a little sketchy.
10:55All right, next up on our list is Cotton and Newburn.
10:59Even though this car just went to the ECTA Standing Mile and ran 198,
11:04there is some stuff that's not going to pass over at the NHRA rulebook department.
11:09So, if you guys remember Land Speed Racing, we had a nice giant rulebook.
11:13NHRA, this is a printed rulebook, but it's also nice and giant.
11:16So, here with our rule cage, they want to make sure that your head isn't going to contact the bar,
11:22your helmet's not going to contact the bar.
11:24They meet the rules for the head protector part, but here on this bar,
11:28if their helmet were to come into contact with that, not good.
11:31They have a bar up here where their helmet could come into contact if they were to roll over
11:35or get hit from the side, some kind of impact, and they have one back there.
11:38So, I just got to take some padding here.
11:40They have compression rules, meaning that if you weren't going to use this padding right here
11:45that is SFI 45.1 spec, or you weren't going to have some that was made to that spec,
11:51you just have to meet different compression rules.
11:52So, basically, even though this is super, super hard, you can see it's not very squishy.
11:58The thought is that it is softer than the bar, and it would compress if you were to be in a high impact situation.
12:04So, this is some padding that just very general three-foot stick here that we ordered,
12:10and you have different tube diameters that you can order.
12:15I've got three variations here because we have a couple different cars that need padding in our fleet.
12:20So, they're just different diameter tubing.
12:22So, I'm going to go ahead, take a couple measurements, cut it up, stick it on.
12:26It's actually got a nice sticky back here.
12:28I'm honestly probably going to put some zip ties, too, because I don't trust that.
12:33This isn't something I usually use. I like the kind that are molded and made.
12:37But for this application, which is very quick, just get it to fit.
12:41It's not really a shortcut. It still meets tech requirements.
12:44It still does everything it needs to. This works perfect.
12:48All right, one more thing we've got to do here.
12:52I can't let you guys off too easy.
12:55Just like that.
12:57How convenient of you guys to make your logo duct taped.
13:00New born and cotton candy.
13:10All right, next!
13:18Next on the list.
13:19So, this is our Grand Trational, renamed Grand Trational,
13:23because if you remember the last time we had it out, it actually performed pretty well.
13:26Our Grand Trational.
13:28That reminds me, if you noticed, there is no hour right here,
13:32because Lucky is not in the shop today.
13:35Poor guy's sick at home.
13:36I haven't seen the doctor's notes, so maybe he's like out racing or something, you know?
13:41Not like I've ever pulled that excuse.
13:43Anyways, he will be back for HRG Day.
13:46But I'm going to get these cars teched and ready.
13:48So, for our radiator catch can or overflow, we need to have a minimum catch can capacity of one pint.
13:5516 ounces.
13:56Catch can must be securely fastened, and it has to have some specific routing.
14:01So, this is our new overflow from Canton.
14:04So, this is supposed to be G-body specific.
14:06Now that we have it here, I can see that the mounting points are a little bit different than what appears they should be.
14:13However, it looks like the contour, which would be the hardest part, should fit right here.
14:17Get this one out, get this one in.
14:19We'll make it work one way or the other.
14:21We have a really nice overflow now.
14:27So, it looks good.
14:28It's going to actually serve its purpose.
14:30And this one is going to pass tech.
14:51Whoa!
14:52That looked a whole lot like Fimoso.
14:55That looks a whole lot like Cleet.
14:58And that reminds me, HRG Day is upon us, and we are going to be bracket racing.
15:04So, for those that don't know, let me teach you what bracket racing is.
15:08So, as you can see here, we have a very two-scale drag strip.
15:12We are going to be running quarter-mile racing.
15:14We're choosing to do a choose-your-own dial-in, meaning that you can tell us that this is a 20-second car.
15:19It could be a 25-second car.
15:21It could be an 18-second car, but that's on you.
15:23You have to be able to run what you said you're going to run.
15:26So, we have this 20-second hot rod here versus this 9-second one here.
15:30We have a staggered tree, meaning that since this one is 11 seconds slower,
15:35it's going to take off 11 seconds sooner than the Savoy.
15:40So, that means you'll probably be down here.
15:42The Savoy's sitting here, ready to go.
15:45Green light comes on.
15:46Now, this one is still moving, but this one's moving at a much faster rate.
15:50Theoretically, you would cross the finish line at exactly the same time.
15:55So, now you're wondering, where does the race come in in that?
15:58Because we're in the real world, and stuff's not that perfect.
16:01So, you want to have your seat time as a driver down here at the tree.
16:04You want to have the consistency in your car out here so you can get the right time.
16:08And you want to have consistency and familiarity with your car down here because you're playing a game.
16:14You don't want to break out of your time.
16:16If you run faster than what you said, you'll lose.
16:19So, we're going to break it down to what should be faster cars, what should be slower cars.
16:23The winners of each of those classes are going to come in and raise our Motor Trend talent,
16:27like David Freiberger, Steve Dulcich, Cotton, Newbern, Derek Bieri, Lucky.
16:35I'm missing other people.
16:36Anyways, we're going to have all of our crew racing all of this crew, and it's going to be a good time.
16:41And that is a very overcomplicated lesson on bracket racing.
16:45You're welcome.
16:47So, I'm picking up where Lucky left off.
16:49I shot him a message because I can see he was almost done.
16:52Basically, all he was waiting on was this handle with a button in the side.
16:55So, we're going to use that as the trans brake.
16:57So, I'm just going to screw this handle on, tighten it up,
17:00and then he actually already has all the wires ran that just need to connect.
17:03So, I'll give him a pass.
17:06He left it pretty easy this time.
17:08Last time we had the Nova in the shop, we did mini tubs.
17:20So, that way, we could put a wider wheel and tire.
17:22Now, I want this to be a radial car still.
17:25So, I want a 315 Mickey Thompson under here.
17:28That was the tire that I knew that we wanted.
17:31Also, we want Billet Specialties wheels.
17:34Big fan of these, too.
17:35So, we have street lights to match our front wheels.
17:37So, we did a double bead lock.
17:39So, that way, it'll grip from the front and from the back,
17:42which is perfect for our radial tire.
17:44Nice big wheel and tire to stick under here with our mini tub.
17:47The first time we're going to fill that up.
17:49So, this is, I think, our final iteration of wheel and tire.
17:56Imagine there's a tire here.
17:58See how there's not?
17:59Use your imagination because it'll be here.
18:01It's just not here at the moment.
18:02So, it'll be a 315 radial on here with these wheels.
18:06And we'll have all that covered.
18:08We just got to get to the power point and everything else on the car.
18:11We'll get there, then.
18:15Okay.
18:16Overshot that one.
18:18All right.
18:19So, we have a whole tray of goodies.
18:21And I was really hoping to get on the Nova.
18:23Lucky's out, though, which kind of killed some of our manpower.
18:27I needed another set of hands to get all of our cars teched and ready to go.
18:32This didn't get to happen.
18:33So, what is this?
18:35These right here are Nicky Bobby Inc. Long Travel.
18:39Nicky Bobby, you've seen them before.
18:41Nick Taylor, my fiancé, have a little bit of an inside plug here.
18:44So, this is some cool stuff right here.
18:47Long Travel.
18:48What is it?
18:49Basically, it's designed to be a modification to your front suspension.
18:53So, that way, you can run a longer shock and a longer spring.
18:56So, you can get more tunability.
18:58You can get better weight transfer.
19:00And you can do all of that without upsetting your chassis.
19:03Paired with that, we have our QA1 shocks that were specced by Nick
19:08to go with this kit right here.
19:10If you go on his website, you can find the stuff to go with this.
19:14Comes for all different body styles, body types.
19:16It's gonna be a big upgrade for the future because, remember,
19:19the Nova is going to be a very fast radial car one day.
19:23It's gonna be an 850 streetable race car.
19:27We'll get to this later.
19:29So, we've done some good work on the Savoy, on the Nova.
19:33We've got our fleet of cars out there ready,
19:35which means our friends should also be ready
19:37because they're actually going to pass tech.
19:40We've gone through what bracket racing is.
19:42We've studied up on it.
19:44We're still not super consistent because, well, to be honest,
19:47you have to have some passes in your cars to be consistent.
19:50Either way, it is going to be a really, really awesome time.
19:53I can't wait to get out to the track.
19:55We have cars ready.
19:57We've got the day ready.
19:59And wait a minute.
20:00Oh, yeah, that's right.
20:01We sold out our very first open to the public HRG day.
20:05Now, that is a big deal because that's 150 race spots,
20:09and every single one of them is sold out.
20:12We sold the show out.
20:14It's a big day.
20:15We're excited about it.
20:16The only thing that is of question is will Lucky pass tech?
20:19I don't know.
20:20Yeah, if you don't remember, he is at home right now
20:22because he is sick.
20:23I have a feeling he's doing a tune-up, getting some rest,
20:26because one thing he's not going to miss is HRG day
20:28because it's a blast, and it's happening right now.
20:39All right, it is HRG day, and where are we, Lucky?
20:42It's our third annual HRG day at Famoso Raceway
20:45in beautiful Bakersfield, California.
20:47Nice.
20:48Oh, yeah.
20:49We're finally getting the hang of this.
20:50Yeah, yeah.
20:51Yeah, but look, we had exponential growth
20:53with HRG day this past year.
20:55We have sold out our very first open-to-the-public event.
20:59We had 150 race spots, plus we have extra tech spots,
21:03plus we've got car show,
21:04plus we got a whole lot of spectator tickets.
21:06Yeah, I think a couple years ago,
21:07we had three of our friends in the bleachers doing a wave.
21:10And two of them were us.
21:12We had to tell them how to do it,
21:14and it's going to be a packed house today for sure.
21:17I'm going to be racing the Savoy.
21:18Going to see how that goes.
21:19Have you even driven the Savoy recently?
21:21I haven't driven the Savoy recently,
21:23and to add to the complication today,
21:25we are bracket racing.
21:27Have you driven the Nova?
21:28I don't even remember the last time I drove the Nova.
21:30Yeah, so we have a whole lot of cars
21:32that we don't have a whole lot of seat time in.
21:34Bracket racing is all about consistency.
21:36That's what a little...
21:37I could actually beat you today.
21:38There's potential.
21:39Yeah.
21:40There's a lot of people back here
21:42that bracket racing is their thing.
21:44Remember, it's consistency, it's time in car,
21:46it's seat time, it's knowing your program.
21:49And you know what we don't know?
21:51Our program.
21:53Not a clue.
21:54It's going to take a lot to beat these guys.
21:56We got cool cars,
21:58but we don't have the bracket racing program figured out.
22:01I can do burnouts for a long way, though.
22:03It'll look cool.
22:04Burnouts are cool.
22:05I mean, we're going to look cool.
22:06I'm good with burnouts.
22:07I don't know what's going to happen.
22:14I do want to welcome everybody here
22:15to Famoso Dragstrip for the 2024 HRG Day.
22:19Right here at Famoso Dragstrip.
22:20Be sure to walk around and meet all the stars
22:22and look at all the cars from all of your favorite series
22:25on Motor Trend.
22:26All right, Lucky, we got a crew lined up here.
22:39This is a crew for sure.
22:41I don't know if they've done bracket racing.
22:43We should probably check.
22:44Cotton.
22:45Huh?
22:46Yeah, so have you bracket raced recently?
22:47No.
22:48So is your skill set good?
22:49It's about as good as yours.
22:51That's offensive.
22:54Do you have a quarter mile time?
22:55I have quarters in my pocket.
22:57Awesome.
22:58He made a joke right there.
23:00That was good, huh?
23:01I have a full group plan, which is to lose in the first round.
23:04I know I can do it.
23:05Awesome.
23:06OK.
23:07Right.
23:08So you got the same thing?
23:09Same plan.
23:10Are you the same?
23:11That's three down.
23:12Go on.
23:13Shoot, all right.
23:14How are you feeling about this?
23:15I don't know.
23:16I'm in that slow car, so.
23:17You said you thought you could win, though, right?
23:19Yeah, I run 1610.
23:20I was here on Thursday.
23:21Oh, so you're, so we have a ringer.
23:23Honesty.
23:24We have a ringer.
23:25That's refreshing.
23:26I think Chappelle's going to win.
23:27He's got the right.
23:28I've got, I'm driving this Typhoon that's got an automatic and all-wheel drive.
23:32I'm sorry.
23:33Are you good on the, good on the tree?
23:35No, I'm terrible.
23:36Sweet.
23:37I don't even know.
23:38Newberry?
23:39I'm in the Trans Am.
23:40I don't know what's going to happen.
23:41That's a land speed kind of car.
23:43Don't rub it in.
23:44Come on, man.
23:47So with that said.
23:48As you can see, we don't have much of a program at all.
23:53What are you talking about?
23:54It's full pro.
23:55Full pro program.
23:56All right, bracket racing's about consistency.
23:58We have no consistency.
23:59We have no program, but we're going to have a good time.
24:02Isn't inconsistency a consistency if it's consistent?
24:05Technically.
24:06I rest my case.
24:07Dulcet, this one's on you.
24:12I don't remember what I put the timing on.
24:15Dave Newburn lives out in the middle of nowhere, and his water at his house happens after a while to smell like Georgia.
24:23And then I ain't good.
24:24I don't know how fast these trucks are or, like, what is done to this, so I'm going to say this thing's going to run in the low sixes today.
24:33So the last time I drove this thing, I think we were broke down the side of the freeway.
24:37That's all the seat time I have in this thing.
24:40I am, like, antsy as all get out, like, doesn't matter what car, because I'm like, what if I forgot how to drive?
24:47All right, here we go.
24:49Oh.
24:52We got backed up.
24:53I think something's leaking.
24:54Yeah, check this out.
24:55I did my first drag race ever, and I did what most of my friends used to do when they would drag race, and that's break your junk.
25:01And once again, I want to welcome everybody here for HRG Day 2024, right here at Formoso Dragstrip.
25:12We got all the cars, all the stars, so it should be fun.
25:16So the last time I drove this car was at Holley LS Fest, but the Junkyard LS exploded, so we put another Junkyard LS in it, and we'll see what this one can do.
25:31That is...
25:38That is a lot of neutrals right there, is what that is.
25:40Derek Bieri, my idol.
25:43This is our 99 Trans Am, so the gearing is all wrong for what we're trying to do today, so I don't know what's going to happen.
25:49I mean, if I had to predict a time, maybe a low 11-second pass, mid-11, somewhere in there, I'm really not sure, so we're about to go find out.
26:01Let's go!
26:02The steel and seat is kind of stuck, or maybe I'm thinking, because I got a lot of fuel in the bowl, so what I do is I give a little tap-tap.
26:16A little tap-tap.
26:18Hopefully if there's any trash in it, it'll just drop to the bottom.
26:22Love hammer.
26:23Let's go get one.
26:25So, no brakes, hood and door pop open automatically, and the clutch is smoked, so I think I'm going to borrow this National over here and see if the keys are in it.
26:38Nope.
26:39Okay, this one runs.
26:41So, resetting the day here, we are down to our top eight in our cage and no cage classes, and there is no ducks out there.
26:57I mean, these guys are in it to win it.
26:59There's good green light competition.
27:01They're all running within their number and their margins.
27:03Eight turns into four, and the cool thing is is these four winners in each cage and no cage class get to then roll over and run the stars in their cars from all of the TV shows.
27:14Bracket racing is an art form as much as it is just hitting the gas.
27:17You have to have strategy.
27:18Don't break out.
27:19Have a proper dial-in.
27:20There's even art of cutting a good light.
27:22They say, don't anticipate the last yellow.
27:25React to it.
27:30Every time we go back, the car makes a little bit better hit.
27:33I am having a really hard time cutting a good light.
27:37For reference, I'm used to heads up drag racing.
27:39I'm used to a pro tree, meaning that all three yellows come on at once.
27:43It's a four hundredths pro tree.
27:45Right now, we're running on a five hundredths sportsman tree.
27:48So, everything about it's slower.
27:50This car reacts so fast.
27:52I keep red lighting.
27:53So, I have this handy-dandy app on my phone.
27:56I've been sitting here practicing cutting lights.
28:01See, I sat and waited, and it's still 005.
28:03That's like a bad job of red lighting.
28:05So, I've been sitting here practicing.
28:06I'm going to try to get one more pass for the real thing.
28:09And at that point, I just got to cross my fingers and hope that I don't suck.
28:15The never-ending saga of Hot Rod Garage Day.
28:18I gave up the Nova because it's got a trans race.
28:20It's not good stuff.
28:21We'll get a professional race car guy in there.
28:23Did I mention the Typhoon failed too?
28:25So, now we're going to take Dirthead Dave and put him in a production vehicle, a van or a truck or something.
28:30I don't know.
28:31And then I'm going to jump in my Chevelle because I like my Chevelle and has air conditioning.
28:35I think the people that showed up here and ran a bunch of bracket races are going to be tripped out when we show up there with a bunch of new stuff.
28:41Hey, Derek, how's it run?
28:43Can I borrow it?
28:44Yeah.
28:45It's a good one, huh?
28:46Yeah, it'll work.
28:47Uh, $6,000?
28:48Shift?
28:49Uh, no.
28:50Yes.
28:51No?
28:52You know what?
28:53Yeah, if you can get it to go to $6,000, shift it there.
28:56I ended up scoring the sweet Chevy pickup and it should be pretty good.
29:06It's got a 6.2 and an automatic transmission.
29:09Maybe it's going to run a 15.5, I don't know.
29:13I'm actually more stoked about this than that Typhoon, which is kind of weird.
29:17All right, my race car here is going to be our 2014 Dodge Charger Police Car with 5.7 Hemi.
29:23I've never driven it before, but I am going to estimate that it will run 14.90.
29:30So that's my dial in.
29:32I just ran a 13.12.
29:35So I'm going to dial in on like a 13.08.
29:38Leave me a little bit of room for improvement there.
29:41We got ourselves Hot Rod.
29:43We're going racing.
29:48Welcome back to Hot Rod Garage Day.
29:50So this is our third annual open to the public and it's our first time that's going to have our host here racing against the finalists in the cage and no cage class.
29:58So we've got eight hosts.
29:59Yeah.
30:00With this much skill.
30:01And we've got eight winners back here with this much skill.
30:05All right.
30:06So we're going to start.
30:07We are going to let you guys pick who you want to race over here.
30:10Starting with number one, Dan Rowley.
30:13Who do you want to call out?
30:14Come on Dan.
30:15Lucky.
30:16Lucky.
30:17Lucky.
30:18Okay.
30:19Number two.
30:20Stewart.
30:21Clutching clutch.
30:22Okay.
30:23I said it this morning.
30:24First thing this morning.
30:25We should not think this through.
30:27Number three.
30:28Larry Warner.
30:29I'm not sure.
30:30There we go.
30:31Oh, no.
30:32Let's talk about it.
30:33Let's do it.
30:34Number four.
30:35Mike.
30:36How do you say that?
30:37Mike.
30:38Okay.
30:39Here to your racing.
30:40Where is Derek?
30:41Derek.
30:42Okay.
30:43All right.
30:44Let's go.
30:45Go.
30:46Go.
30:47Go.
30:48Go.
30:49Go.
30:50Go.
30:51Go.
30:52Go.
30:53Go.
30:54Go.
30:55Go.
30:56Go.
30:57Derek.
30:58Okay.
31:01Going to the no cage class.
31:02Number one.
31:03Jeremy McFonald.
31:05McDonald.
31:06They spelled it wrong.
31:07I'm going to take Dulcich.
31:08Mopar versus Mopar.
31:09You've got to have your hands full, brother.
31:11I'm not too scared.
31:12Wow.
31:16Number two.
31:17Terry Rowland.
31:18Oh, what the hell.
31:19Let's take the Trans Am.
31:25Number three.
31:26Carl Smith.
31:27Yes.
31:28I want Dave Chappelle.
31:29I get the last because I'm the last person to block.
31:31Woo.
31:36Number four.
31:37Norm Wethy.
31:38Right here.
31:39Sorry, you have nothing to play.
31:40He doesn't have much of a choice.
31:41You're stuck.
31:42You've got to race the Flaremont, buddy.
31:47That was good.
31:48Okay.
31:49All right.
31:50It is time.
31:51It's a show off against us, against them.
31:53Good luck, guys.
31:54Good luck, guys.
31:55Let's do it.
31:56We need it.
32:00Okay.
32:01Round one.
32:02Let's go.
32:07Everybody's getting belted in and suited up.
32:09We're going to get down to business here.
32:11First down the racetrack.
32:12I do believe this is Steve Dulcich coming up.
32:14And his competitor in no cage is Jeremy McDonald.
32:19Red light for Dulcich and a wind light for Jeremy McDonald.
32:26And Dulcich bulbed it by 12,000th of a second.
32:31And so first helmet of the day surrendered.
32:35Second.
32:36That's all you had.
32:37Thanks, Steve.
32:38I just got out of it.
32:39Here we go.
32:40Newbern out here out of Waco, Georgia, dialed in at 1195.
32:43And Terrietta Bakersfield right down the street here.
32:441150.
32:45He's going to be doing the chasing.
32:46And here comes Terri.
32:47And there goes Newbern.
32:48So Newbern going to run it out the back door.
32:49Does he got it?
32:50No.
32:511153 on 1150.
32:52Terry Rowland says, out of my neighborhood, David Newbern.
32:53I got it.
32:54Thank you, sir.
32:55Have fun.
32:56Here we go.
32:57Next pair.
32:58We got David Chappelle.
32:59He's dialed in at 1560.
33:00Carl Smith back at it.
33:01He's dialed in at 1158.
33:02So he's going to have to do a lot of waiting there.
33:04Be very, very patient.
33:05So there goes the truck.
33:06Here comes the 55.
33:07Oh, man.
33:08Oh, man.
33:09Oh, man.
33:10Oh, man.
33:11Oh, man.
33:12Oh, man.
33:13Oh, man.
33:14Oh, man.
33:15Oh, man.
33:16Oh, man.
33:17Oh, man.
33:18Oh, man.
33:19Oh, man.
33:20Oh, man.
33:21Oh, man.
33:22Oh, man.
33:23Oh, man.
33:24Oh, man.
33:25Oh, man.
33:26Oh, man.
33:27He's out of the throttle.
33:28Oh my God, he breaks out.
33:30Steve Chappelle gets the win.
33:32So David Chappelle, the first one of the celebrity racers.
33:35So I won.
33:36Who won.
33:37I'm a winner.
33:40Next pair.
33:41So this is my cotton.
33:431217 and Rick blairuma and Normム, 69 Dart, 1165 to 1217.
33:52No.
33:53Wow, so Cotton with a three-second reaction time.
34:021198, Norm Weather gets it done, 1157.
34:06How does it feel to beat me?
34:08Feels great.
34:09That's messed up.
34:11And here we go, Lucky Costa against Dan Rowley,
34:15today's winner in the cage category.
34:23Win line gonna be Dan Rowley, 10-18-7 and 117,
34:38took a two-tenths finish line stripe.
34:40Lucky was 1153 on the 1150, he was close to the number,
34:44but Dan had him at the hit of the throttle,
34:46and that reaction time that'll get you every time.
34:48Man, these bracket racers got game.
34:51Thank you so much.
34:53Yeah, my pleasure, buddy.
34:55Good job, man, good job.
34:56Yep.
34:59So here we go, Alex Taylor, Moonville, Arkansas,
35:0255 Plymouth Savoy, dialed in at a 930,
35:05and that thing's been hovering 930s all day.
35:07And Stuart Baralla, the 67 Camaro out of Westminster,
35:11got an 855.
35:13So Alex, probably not something she's used to that much,
35:16getting a head start and getting chased.
35:21Alex still ahead at 1,000 foot,
35:23and that Camaro's coming out strong on the brakes.
35:25He gets the win light, 872, 149.
35:26I owe him an apology.
35:27Oh, I totally just double-bulbed him.
35:28I am so sorry.
35:29What?
35:30I double-bulbed you?
35:31I swear to you, I didn't want me to do that.
35:32Oh, I didn't even notice.
35:33You didn't notice?
35:34Oh, thank God.
35:35Okay.
35:36I was like, I have been panicked the whole time.
35:37I was like, oh, I was a bad racer right there.
35:38Congratulations.
35:39Oh, thank you.
35:40Here's your helmet.
35:41Congratulations.
35:42Here's your helmet.
35:43Congratulations.
35:44Friar Burger in the Roadkill Garage Pursuit Cop Car.
35:47Larry Warren, 55 Chevy, 210 car.
35:49Friar Burger, gonna get a head start, 1490.
35:53So here comes the 55 Chevy, 210 car.
35:56Friar Burger, gonna get a head start, 1490.
35:59So here comes the 55 Chevy, 210 car.
36:04Friar Burger, gonna get a head start, 1490.
36:08So here comes the 55 of Larry Warren.
36:15One of them's 012, the other one's 070.
36:18Wow, I might actually win this.
36:20He's coming past me.
36:22Will he pass me?
36:23Will he pass me?
36:24He's gonna pass me.
36:25And yes, he did.
36:27Top end win line, gonna be Larry Warren.
36:29That 1062.8 on the 1049, he was 012 in reaction time.
36:33Friar Burger, he goes 1504 at 97 miles an hour.
36:36And Friar Burger bows out.
36:38I'm getting applauded for losing.
36:43All right, Larry.
36:44Hey, David.
36:45That was cool, man.
36:46Getting a ticket from a cop car.
36:47The only one I ever wanted.
36:48Wow, look at that.
36:50You got my helmet.
36:51Look at that.
36:52I appreciate that, buddy.
36:53You were a lot of fun, man.
36:54That's cool.
36:55And I appreciate you turning around and lighting me up.
36:57Oh, yeah.
36:58It was pretty fun.
36:59Brought back memories.
37:00Oh, good.
37:06We got Derek earlier today was driving the DeLorean.
37:09The clutch just stopped working altogether.
37:11So they said, all right, we'll hop in the Nova.
37:13So Mike, 66 Chevelle down to 955.
37:25Nova's out.
37:26Here comes Mike.
37:31Reaction time may play a factor here.
37:37Top at one line going to be Mike Calfeb.
37:39How about that?
37:4066 Chevelle.
37:41He was 094.
37:42Better in reaction time than Derek.
37:44Ah, he got me.
37:47We lost as expected, but this was a lot of fun.
37:50All right, here you go.
37:51You won this time.
38:01OK, so first annual open to the public HRG day.
38:05Did you guys have fun?
38:06Yeah!
38:08OK, we're going to start by giving out those trophies,
38:11starting with no cage.
38:13Number one, we have Jeremy McDonald's.
38:17Woo!
38:21Awesome.
38:22Congratulations.
38:23Next in cage class, number one overall is Dan Rowling.
38:28Woo-hoo!
38:29Cage class?
38:30Oh, thank you for kicking my derriere, sir.
38:32Well, you weren't lucky today.
38:34OK.
38:35Ah, very funny.
38:36Ah, ah, ah.
38:37I wasn't lucky today.
38:38All right, buddy.
38:39Thanks.
38:40All right, so here's where everything changed up.
38:41Drag racing is interesting because we are at the mercy of Mother Nature.
38:45You guys noticed it's getting cold and dark.
38:47We have cars that we don't necessarily want to send down the track.
38:50So we trust that our Famoso crew has made the right call,
38:53and we're going to have to end a little bit early.
38:56So we still have to do something about our overall winner.
39:00Dave Chappelle is our only one carrying us still.
39:05Yeah!
39:07Yeah.
39:08Wait, all right.
39:09Known for off-road?
39:11Yes.
39:12Carrying the hot rod guys.
39:13Appreciate you.
39:14Yeah.
39:15Yeah.
39:16Yeah.
39:17We thought we would have a foot race to wrap this thing up.
39:20Do the shoes!
39:21So...
39:22Do the shoes!
39:23So...
39:24Do the shoes!
39:25So, Dave, I'm sorry.
39:27You've got to carry us on this one.
39:28Get your running shoes on.
39:29No, not actually carry us, but...
39:31This is running band.
39:32Your own body weight.
39:33Now, for the other class, the non-Motortrend, the cage versus no cage.
39:37Now, if you were a winner, raise your hand in this last round,
39:39if you beat a Motor Trend host.
39:41Raise your hand.
39:42All right, you guys get to collectively decide who here is the fastest and can beat Dave Chappelle.
39:48On their Chevrolet.
39:49Chevrolet's only.
39:50What?
39:51Stew the shoe!
39:52Stew the shoe!
39:53Stew the shoe!
39:54Stew the shoe!
39:55Stew the shoe!
39:56Stew the shoe!
39:57Stew the shoe!
39:58Yes!
39:59Okay!
40:00Can I push him now when we start?
40:01You absolutely can.
40:02He's wearing a padded suit.
40:09Let's cheer him on, guys!
40:10They have a race on him!
40:11Yeah!
40:12Yeah!
40:13Woo!
40:16Don't let him go!
40:17Don't, don't laugh!
40:18Don't laugh!
40:19Don't laugh!
40:20Dave, don't listen to him!
40:24Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go!
40:26Oh, no!
40:27Oh, no!
40:29Oh, no!
40:30Okay!
40:31We won!
40:32We won!
40:33We won!
40:34We won!
40:35We won!
40:37I almost feel bad.
40:39What is going on?
40:40All right, thank you, everyone, for a successful HRG day.
40:44Yay!
40:49That was interesting.
40:50That, uh, that shoe guy was trippin'.
40:53He was trippin'.
40:54But he was a champ!
40:55But you are the actual overall champ!
40:58That's so weird.
40:59That's so weird.
41:00And it is my pleasure to offer you the HRG Day 2024 overall winner award.
41:05Congratulations.
41:06Thank you guys so much.
41:10You did very nice.
41:11Do something nice with it.
41:12Stay in school.
41:13They're very good.
41:14Wow.
41:15I can say I didn't think that's what was gonna happen.
41:17Yeah, the off-road guy kicked everyone's butt.
41:19Yeah.
41:20And it was in a foot race.
41:21What did David Freiberg say?
41:22He drips winning.
41:23Drips winning, yes.
41:24Yeah.
41:25So is that it for Hot Rod Garage Day 2024?
41:28It absolutely is.
41:29First ever open to the public, but third annual HRG Day.
41:33Right.
41:34So many people showed up today.
41:35You guys remember we designed HRG Day to be a day where we wrap up our year
41:39with all of the cars that we built for the season.
41:41We bring our friends out and we have a whole lot of fun.
41:44And I would say we did that times like 10 today.
41:46At least, yeah.
41:47It was a really good time.
41:48So I think we owe some thanks.
41:50We do, but it is a long, long list.
41:53I think, first of all, all the hosts that showed up out here.
41:56Absolutely.
41:57And it was like all of them.
41:58Like, minus Finnegan and that was it.
42:01Yeah.
42:02Everybody else was here.
42:03And there was a guy that looked just like Finnegan here.
42:04Yeah, so it was like, he was here in spirit.
42:05Yeah, yeah.
42:06Yeah.
42:07Oh, and all the fans that showed up.
42:08Uh, yeah.
42:09Thank you guys for coming to spend your day with us today at the racetrack.
42:12That's always a good time, but it's still a day out of your life.
42:15Yeah.
42:16A ton of people packed up all their stuff and brought it out here and hung out with us and made passes.
42:19It was crazy.
42:20Absolutely.
42:21Congratulations to the winners of the Caged and No Caged class, plus Dave Chappelle for taking it.
42:25Overall, carrying the Motor Trend family on his back in the foot race.
42:29Also, thank you to Formoso Dragstrip in beautiful Bakersfield, California.
42:33Nice, nice, nice.
42:34I didn't know if you were going to see it.
42:35I was concerned.
42:36They kept us running today, helped us get our first public event off and to a good start.
42:40Right.
42:41And they didn't kick us out.
42:42It's dark right now.
42:43Surprising, right?
42:44Yeah.
42:45Yeah.
42:46Also, one last thanks.
