00:00Hey, tour stop number one, Elite Redfish Series right here in beautiful Slidell, Louisiana, St. Tammany Parish.
00:05Let's get it started.
00:30I'm Pat Malone, he's Mike Frenette, and this is Game Time.
00:43Mike, welcome to the show again, my brother.
00:45Oh, thank you. I always love being here.
00:46Well, we love being where we are this week.
00:49We're on the Louisiana North Shore in Slidell, and I know the fish are popping.
00:53I tell you, it's such a great destination for a tournament because there's a variety of different ways to fish in this area.
00:58You've got Lake Pontchartrain, you've got the Regulies, you've got the Biloxi Marsh.
01:02So you can fish shallow, you can fish deep.
01:05Whatever your choice is for an angler, you've got it here.
01:08Top water down below, throwing a spoon, a little bit of everything, Berkeley gulps.
01:12What are we looking at, Mike?
01:13I think you hit the nail on the head.
01:14I think it's going to be a little bit of everything, and it really depends on where you are.
01:18If you're up back in the marsh and you're fishing in the shallow waters, there's a mullet hatch, and they're fairly small right now.
01:25So you're going to use a small, soft, plastic bait with a light jig head or a weedless hook.
01:30Going to have to put the bait in front of the fish's mouth right now because they're not going to charge it.
01:35Right now, they're kind of lazy-daisy, but if you put it in front of them, they're going to knock it.
01:39And the deep water guys, well, you know as well as I do, that's just going to be jigging with a jig head on the bottom.
01:44This week, the focus is on the fishing with over $20,000 to be awarded during this episode.
01:49With a very limited field of anglers, I'm going to tell you what, everybody's got a shot at getting a big check.
01:55Mike, let's get to the action right now, and it starts with the boats going in the water.
02:00An early season cold front would ensure conditions would be tough.
02:04But if the anglers can figure out the fish, the reward could be a huge payday.
02:10Winning any of these is tough.
02:13There's high-caliber anglers out here, and I mean, it's definitely pride.
02:18Everybody knows everybody, and everybody's a competitor, so it's tough out there.
02:22But if you win one, it means a lot.
02:24We've got to catch two more fish at the plant.
02:26Just two fish to weigh in.
02:27That's all we need.
02:29It means a lot, you know.
02:30This is the first time.
02:31We'll see what we can do.
02:33While anglers head out to their favorite fishing grounds for the final day of competition,
02:38we're going to head over to the North Shore Harbor Center,
02:42where the Gulf Coast Sportsman and Outdoor Expo is in full swing.
02:46You're going to see all that is right here at the Harbor Center in the 2022 Gulf Coast Sportsman's Expo
02:52and live Redfish Tournament event.
02:55The Gulf Coast Sportsman and Outdoor Expo is one of the North Shore's premier events,
03:01hosted annually, and features vendors, exhibitors, outdoor enthusiasts, distributors,
03:08and officials promoting conservation with a focus on safety in the outdoors.
03:14Hello, everybody.
03:15I'm Paul Bernard.
03:16I'm the Recreational Boating Safety Program Manager for the Coast Guard's 8th District
03:19based out of New Orleans, and we're here at the outdoor show promoting safe boating.
03:24So get out there, have fun, and be safe.
03:29The anglers have fished a full day and are returning to Wrigley's Marine,
03:34located here in Slidell, where they'll load their boats and head to the North Shore Harbor Center
03:40for the final weigh-in and the crowning of the Elite Redfish Series champions for this event.
03:48Only caught five fish all day.
03:49We got two seven-and-a-half pounders in a live well, and I'm glad to have it.
03:54Today was a struggle.
03:55We didn't catch our first fish until about 12, 31 o'clock.
03:58We pretty much had to leave by 2.30.
04:01We had one with a bad tail this morning.
04:04Sent a picture to the weigh master, and he said no go on that.
04:09So bad tail, don't let it go.
04:11It was like an eight-and-three-quarter pounder, but it is what it is.
04:16Got to follow the rules.
04:17Everybody's on the same playing field.
04:18So I'll see you all at the weigh-in.
04:22Welcome back to the Elite Redfish Series on the Louisiana North Shore in St. Tammany Parish.
04:29Elite Redfish Series television is brought to you by Tidewater Boats, Yamaha Outboards, McLean Trailers, Frog Togs, Berkeley Fishing, and many other fine sponsors.
04:42Welcome, everybody, to Slidell, Louisiana.
04:47This is St. Tammany Parish, and it's time for the Elite Redfish Series from right here at the Harbor Center.
04:53Casting for a Cause, Kevin Edwards and Jay Yancey, come on up here.
04:57Kevin, let's talk a little bit about, you know, casting and what that means to you and what you're doing with it.
05:01Absolutely. We're casting for a cause, Disabled Veterans Outdoors, and our goal is to really get these Disabled Veterans out on the boat,
05:09get their mind off of the things that they may be dealing with.
05:12We have a lot of, the majority of our guys, girls, are competing with PTSD.
05:17All the way from Tampa, Florida, Jacob Meyer and Blake Chitwood, 1386.
05:23We found some local fish, but they just, they weren't there on the first day.
05:26So, like I said, we made an audible, and it didn't work out for us.
05:29Bubba Corbin and Jacob Brown.
05:30Much better day. Bubba and I put them in a boat, and we had a blast.
05:351879. Oh, my goodness. 946. That's why they said, let's do it again.
05:41Get them up. Let's get a good picture of them. Get them out front.
05:43Man, look at that. Gary Marino is coming up next, and he's going to do it with Stephen Fleming.
05:491552. I'd say it's a little bit better.
05:52Story of my life, I'm a little bit short.
05:54Really didn't start biting until things heated up around 11 o'clock-ish, probably before we caught our first fish.
06:00And this is going to be Mr. Barney White and Dwayne Mills, two fish, two alive.
06:05Your new leaders, 1702. There you go, baby.
06:09We put the trolling motor down after we spent about 30 minutes getting unstuck, and we commence to putting on a show.
06:15Let's hope we get them.
06:16Bo Favre and Mark Robinson, 1655, 1633 100s behind it.
06:24We ended up getting a few of them no bite. We actually called two or three times a day, had some overs.
06:28We caught 10 or 12 fish. I mean, yesterday we didn't catch but five.
06:31They had 1785 yesterday. This is four horsemen tackle team of Roger Dowdy and Chad Filiot.
06:38They got 1552.
06:39The last place we stopped, man, we put the fish in the box, and I looked at Chad and said, man, we gave it everything.
06:44We did good. There was no real errors. The fish we lost, you know, it's some freak thing that happened.
06:49And that's your winners.
06:51We laid it down and, you know, did what we can do.
06:53And I looked at Chad and said, man, we had a good time. We come off first to last.
06:56I said, we laid it down.
06:57Wow, Mike, what an exciting conclusion to this week's tournament right here on the Louisiana North Shore in Slidell at the Harbor Center with so much going on, a festival atmosphere right here.
07:09And it was Roger Dowdy and Chad Filiot winning for the first time on the Elite Redfish Series.
07:15What an exciting time.
07:16You know, just because it's their first time winning, that's two great anglers right there.
07:19Yes, it is.
07:20I mean, Chad, he's been around a long time fishing tournaments and done very well.
07:24There's so many good anglers in this event.
07:28But Chad and Roger, I'm happy for them.
07:30Yeah, and, you know, we had 20, 25 competitors in this thing, and they all teamed up.
07:36And so it was a limited field, but a lot of money, $10,000 plus the Brecknell Big Red Challenge bonus money.
07:42There's a lot of money to be won without having to fight 100 boats to get to it.
07:45That's got to be encouraging for the anglers.
07:48Folks, it's been so good being with you.
07:49Thank you for tuning in.
07:50For Mr. Mike, I'm Pat Malone, and we look forward to seeing you on an episode down the road.
07:58Hey, folks.
07:59Pat Malone here, host of the Elite Redfish Series.
08:02And any time we're in Louisiana, you know it's going to start with food.
08:06And tonight, we're at Menendorf Seafood Restaurant in Slidell.
08:09And let me tell you something, folks.
08:10They're known for the world's thinnest catfish available today.
08:17And let me tell you, it is super good.
08:19Y'all stay tuned.
08:19We're going to be back with more from this exciting week of action right here on the Discovery Channel.
08:24Welcome back.
08:28We promised a doubleheader, and here it is.
08:30Game two.
08:32The tour returns to Slidell on the Louisiana North Shore.
08:35It's a bit warmer, and the time of year when the waters of the North Shore are teeming with big redfish.
08:41So let's get right to the action, or more like in action.
08:45The sensor.
08:47What do you have to do, like unplug it and reset it?
08:49I unplugged it and reset it, and the sensor went off.
08:54So we're good to go.
08:55We're ready.
08:56We'll take home the W today.
08:58Things are looking up for Team Marino and the other anglers launching on the final day.
09:03But the Florida team of Stacy and Dean Fratina were not as lucky.
09:08The mechanical bug put them out of the game on day one.
09:15Hello, everybody.
09:17Welcome to Game Time.
09:18I'm your host, Pat Malone, here with Mike Furnette, a great co-host for this show.
09:23And this week, Mike, why don't you tell them where we are and what we're doing right here.
09:27Okay, well, we're fishing out of Slidell, which is just a great area and tremendous fishing capabilities
09:33and a lot of different things to do in Slidell.
09:36It's kind of like the, there's parts of Slidell that's still like living in the country.
09:40It's just a fantastic place.
09:42It's a beautiful area.
09:43And most importantly, they got some pretty good red fishing pretty close to this area here.
09:48And there's going to be, I think there's going to be some special fish caught.
09:51If they're not just hunkered down in the marsh somewhere, if they're fishing at all,
09:54they're going to have to be doing some blind casting.
09:56And for this field, that's not something they really get along with.
10:00The weathermen are wrong most of the time.
10:01But if they're right this time, there could be some challenges.
10:05Hey, folks, we're going to take a short break.
10:07We come back.
10:07We're going to talk to one of the guys out here that's going to be able to fill us in and fill our audience in
10:12on how this got started, what they offer out here, and what makes them just a little bit different.
10:17Because you know us, we always try to find those hidden nuggets when we come to town.
10:21And it looks like we've landed on a gold mine right here at Cajun Encounters.
10:25This is a special place, without a doubt.
10:27Now is the time to rediscover the century-old truths about Louisiana's North Shore.
10:32Here, there is refuge and adventure in the exhilarating nature of St. Tammany Parish.
10:38There's remedy in the famous artesian waters and relief in the fresh air of the piney woods.
10:44Here, grand hotels offer haven, and the area's bounty provides tantalizing tastes.
10:51Now is the time to plan your trip.
10:53St. Tammany is waiting for you to explore the 80,000 acres of wildlife sanctuary to wander,
10:59the waterways to paddle, the music that moves, the dishes that delight.
11:05It's all here, ready for us to love again.
11:09Now is the time.
11:11Time to get back together.
11:12Back to feeding our soul and satisfying our taste bites.
11:16Back to the adventure of St. Tammany.
11:19Plan your trip today, and take the time to rediscover the many reasons we love Louisiana North Shore.
11:27Well, welcome back.
11:28I'm Captain Mike Frenette, and we're here with Captain Luca with Cajun Encounters.
11:33And this is absolutely a very special location located in Slidell.
11:39And Captain Luca, why don't you tell me a little bit about the business here, the area.
11:43Well, welcome to Cajun Encounters, by the way.
11:46We're settled just north of New Orleans, north of Lake Pontchartrain.
11:49We refer to it as the North Shore.
11:51And we tour the Honey Island Swamp.
11:53You know, when people come down to New Orleans, you know, I got to tell you, you know, there's many swamp tours down here.
11:58But the advantage of touring with us is because we take in a true swamp.
12:01The Honey Island Swamp, Louisiana's last untouched weathers.
12:04You know, I tell our captains every day out here that, you know, we're here to entertain.
12:08The swamp speaks for itself.
12:09I mean, this is really a true swamp tour.
12:14Just south of here, about three to four miles, you start getting into the brackish water, into the Wrigalese, which connects Lake Bourne and Lake Pontchartrain.
12:21Some of the best fishing in the world.
12:23When the people get here, do we go further into the swamps?
12:26Well, this time of year, we're clearly in summertime.
12:30We have a lot of guests coming from Texas.
12:32We also accommodate transportation from the city of New Orleans.
12:36We bring them out here to this beautiful pavilion that you're looking at right here.
12:39And, you know, they kind of just hang out.
12:41They walk along our boardwalks.
12:42And then we assign them to a captain.
12:45The captain takes them in the swamp for an hour and 45 minutes and truly entertains them, educates them on things that they're seeing that time of year.
12:53Talks about alligators, lots and lots of wildlife, along with all the migratory birds that are blooming.
12:59You know, the flowers that are blooming this time of year.
13:01Well, there's no better name for your business here than Cajun Encounters because this is a Cajun Encounter experience.
13:10We provide a comfortable ride to and from the city of New Orleans.
13:13It's only about 35 to 40 minutes.
13:15The swamp, the wildlife, everything that you imagine when you come to South Louisiana.
13:20Thank you for having us here today.
13:23Thank you, Cajun Encounters, for a real Louisiana experience.
13:27Don't go anywhere.
13:29After this short commercial break, we'll look back at a championship day of fishing with elite pro Travis Land.
13:35Welcome to this Winning Ways episode.
13:37I'm Pat Malone.
13:38And this week, a look back at Travis Land's impressive win.
13:42Fish on.
13:43On the board, boys.
13:44On the board.
13:44At the Waterloo Rods Roundup.
13:46Get in your boat.
13:46You go find them.
13:47And you figure out what you're going to do for the next eight hours.
13:51It's tough.
13:52Addition of that fish puts you in first place.
13:54The rest of the field is unchanged.
13:55Big fish.
13:57Good fish.
13:57Travis Land just caught back-to-back fish.
14:00His last one weighing eight pounds, two ounces.
14:03Holy moly.
14:04Early the next morning would be this group's first chance at knowing exactly where they were going to be fishing.
14:10While it was in the same area, it wasn't the same waters as round number one.
14:14Historically, that area holds a lot of fish.
14:16So I felt good about where I'm going.
14:18I know what I'm going to do.
14:19I know where I'm going to start anyway.
14:20I knew one or two of those areas that I'd been in had held some fish two years ago.
14:26We've got one minute and 20 seconds until line's in.
14:29All that kind of stuff that we do normally weeks ahead of time, it's all out the water now.
14:34You get in your boat.
14:35You go find them.
14:36And you figure out what you're going to do for the next eight hours.
14:40Where I started fishing was kind of a deep water shelf, widgeon grass flat that fell off into a deep water shelf.
14:47And when I came around the corner, I blew up a big water fish, 25 fish.
14:50They probably want to be on this bank.
14:51They're a little farther off.
14:53I went up and I made a drift.
14:54Four pounds, six ounces.
14:56Got it.
14:57On the board, boys.
14:58In the back of my mind, I keep wanting to go back there.
15:04And I know that I've got to be in for lunch for our midday break.
15:07I just told myself, look, wait till after the midday break.
15:10Six pounds, five ounces.
15:11Sir.
15:12Wait till the sun gets right.
15:13And then you go back over there and check them, see what they really were and how many were really there.
15:17In the afternoon, I had about a 30-pound lead.
15:19In our game, you can change that with three fish, maybe four.
15:22You know, I was fishing when I said dirty water.
15:24It was a stained, teed-colored water.
15:27So, I'm keying on the smallest flashes, the smallest bait flicker.
15:32The conditions kept getting tougher and tougher later in the day.
15:36And I knew with those tougher conditions, it was going to be harder for them than it was earlier in the day.
15:42Golly.
15:43Eight pounds, three ounces.
15:45Woo.
15:46Yes, sir.
15:49Oh.
15:52Nine-fourteen.
15:53Woo.
15:53You can't get much closer to ten than that, boy.
15:57You can't get much closer to ten than that.
15:59Oh, he's ready to go.
16:00Let him, look at him go.
16:01I'm just sitting here, taking it all in, looking at some beautiful South Louisiana marsh.
16:07To come out on top of guys like this, in this scenario, against these type of anglers, it's super special.
16:14Come in this scenario without any help, not knowing where you're going, not knowing what you're going to throw, not knowing where you're going to fish.
16:19To beat this caliber of anglers in this scenario is super special.
16:24Wow.
16:25Another exciting round of fishing.
16:27Travis Land hammers him 83-plus pounds on a day that was very tough to get the fish to cooperate.
16:34Travis figured it out, and congratulations.
16:36He takes home the top prize.
16:38Now it's time to head to the stage for the final weigh-in and crowning of another Elite Fishing Series champion.
16:50Maybe ten fish on that one bank and half a dozen on that other.
16:54Definitely better than yesterday.
16:55We'll have to see what the scales say they are.
16:58Struggled a little bit this morning with the dirty water, and then they bit better after about an hour or so.
17:04I'm sure you heard us clacking them coming in.
17:06Yeah, we've got to.
17:07Quick.
17:21Welcome to the stage, young man.
17:22Joe, welcome back.
17:24Great to see you.
17:25Two alive.
17:26Read your scales and get you locked in at 1282.
17:29Your new leader, 1282 with 2762 over the two-day.
17:33There we go.
17:33Put your hands together and show some love, y'all.
17:36Coming up next, Beau Favre and Mark Robinson.
17:39One fish, one alive, and one just a little bit too big.
17:43802.
17:48With Spotted Addiction, the team of Gary Marino and Stephen Fleming.
17:51You need 1660 to take the lead.
17:55Two fish, two alive.
17:57You need 1102.
17:57I don't think that's going to be an issue with two Louisiana redfish.
18:001604, 3254 over the two days.
18:03Your new leaders, great job, guys.
18:05Make some noise.
18:10Coming off of 1565 yesterday.
18:12Put your hands together if you would, please.
18:14Brent and Cohen Gross.
18:15Ladies and gentlemen, they need 1699 on two live Louisiana redfish.
18:221802.
18:23There's your new leaders.
18:24Put your hands together with 3367.
18:27902, your big red.
18:29There you go, guys.
18:30Wow.
18:30Good job.
18:31Woo.
18:321802, anchored by a 902.
18:34Need 19.
18:35Had 1410 yesterday.
18:37Get your weight in at 1662.
18:39And their big red is going to be 854.
18:57Y'all put your hands together for them one more time.
19:00Great job, fellas.
19:01What an exciting conclusion to a terrific week right here on the Louisiana North Shore in Slidell.
19:12Another father and son team has notched a win on the Elite Redfish Series.
19:17And what's great about it, this is the first tournament they ever fished together as a father and son.
19:23Who would have thought?
19:24I mean, that just goes to show you it's anybody's game once you leave the dock.
19:28And it concludes just a terrific week here in Slidell.
19:31No place like the Louisiana North Shore like we talk about so many times when we get to this area of the country.
19:37Plenty of food, plenty of fun, and, of course, plenty of fishing.
19:40And having some of the events take place at the Harbor Center, man, what a terrific place that was as well.
19:46The Cajun Adventures, what a special time that was.
19:50So cool to be able to go out there and meet those fine folks and to spend a little time with them.
19:54And this area here is still pristine.
19:57It's such a beautiful location.
19:58We learned so much about that place.
20:00Of course, Jeff Rogers is either one of or the principal owner of that.
20:04And he's an avid redfish tournament angler.
20:06Slidell has a lot to offer.
20:07The Louisiana North Shore is teeming with things to do for both the family as well as the hardcore angler.
20:14Mike, thank you so much for being with us again.
20:16My name is Pat Malone saying so long from the Louisiana North Shore right here in Slidell, Louisiana for the Elite Redfish Tournament Series.
20:25Thank you for tuning in and watching this week's episode.
