00:00On this week's World of Saltwater Fishing, we're still in El Salvador in Central America,
00:11and our target is roosterfish. Can Harry Vernon knock a roosterfish off his bucket list? Stay
00:18tuned and find out.
00:30George Bovarumo's World of Saltwater Fishing. Big fish don't stand a chance.
00:48Here we go. This would be our inshore, nearshore day, hoping that Harry Vernon knocks off his
00:56roosterfish from his bucket list. So after breakfast at Casa del Golfo, or resort, we take
01:03that 10-minute van ride to the marina.
01:06All right, here it is. Day one. You know, we're not running 50 miles offshore, 45 miles offshore.
01:12We're just running probably maybe 10, 15 miles real close.
01:16And lo and behold, to my great surprise, our inshore boat nonetheless is a 28-foot Mako
01:25center console. If that's not enough, it's powered by twin brand new Mercury outboards.
01:32I said, wow, this was almost like having a boat, a custom boat dropped off here to go fishing.
01:38So we loaded up on the boat, and we had Captain Junior running the Mako, Harry Vernon and I
01:44and our production team. As we weaved our way to some of the areas that we would try for roosterfish,
01:50the scenery is nothing short of magnificent. Check the scenery out. Something I don't see
01:56too much of in South Florida. So this was our environment when Junior slowed down the Mako,
02:02and he said, here's the drill. We're going to take these 20-pound class outfits, and we
02:10are going to slow troll live mullet for roosterfish. So I told Harry, this is your game. I've taken
02:17roosterfish before. I'm going to sit back, and I'm going to watch the Harry Vernon show,
02:21and hopefully it's going to be a good one. And unfortunately, unfortunately, depending
02:24on how you look at it, a roosterfish came up on the mullet bait. 15 minutes into it,
02:29I'm in the bow of this Mako, and I hear him screaming, rooster, rooster, rooster. And they
02:34could see this rooster coming up on the mullet. And for whatever reason, Harry either didn't drop
02:40back long enough or too far or whatever, he missed it. To increase our chances at hooking a roosterfish,
02:46as well as other species, a Rapala diving lure was added as a flatline bait. But then all of a sudden,
02:53Harry's on, and you could tell immediately it wasn't a roosterfish, but it was one of the biggest
02:59Spanish mackerel I've seen. They got you, huh? I guess. No, Jack. That's a big mackerel, isn't it? I don't
03:08know what it was. That's a big mackerel. Let me put this back here. That's a big one there. You want
03:14to walk down for it, make it easy? I can do that if you'd like. Unless he's got six, eight-foot arms.
03:19Let's land up on top of the T-top, make it challenging. I don't know if he's going to be able to net this. That's a big mackerel, man.
03:24That's what the other one was. You ready? There you go. Now, there's a mackerel. All right. You were
03:33doing a trick. You put the swim in. You're doing your popper, because I know you love your popper,
03:39which just gets normally the big boy and all that. But I figured, you know what? Let's just
03:42try to catch something quality. This thing just walloped it, man. This guy hit hard.
03:47So, Rapala subsurface? That'd be sashimi. Woo-wee! Look at that. Look at that.
03:58This would be an unbelievably big Spanish mackerel out of South Florida. It was like, it was
04:03like you had the wow factor with this fish. Well, the wow factor continued because shortly
04:08after we get another Spanish mackerel. You got something, Harry? I don't know. A mullet? Oh, no.
04:15What is it? A rooster? A mackerel. Alligator. Another mackerel. Another mackerel.
04:19Another mack. Eat your mullet. What's for? King Vernon? King mackerel? Well, what kind
04:25is that? We got to see. It looks different. It does. Whoa. Holy moly. A holy mackerel? That's
04:33an old joke. All right. We're just free lining the mullet out, trying to get the rooster fish,
04:39and on 40-pound mono circle hook. And as you can see, right in the corner of the mouth,
04:45and normally they cut you off. You can see as we brought it in, it cut it off with the
04:49teeth. But it just, all kinds of fish out here. It's a lot of fun. Casting, trolling
04:55live baits. A lot of fun. And we net that one, another monster Spanish mackerel. If somebody
05:02wanted to come down here and concentrate on Spanish mackerel for like light line class world records
05:08or something, I think they'd have a really good shot of popping it and making that happen.
05:13And unfortunately, we did not get another rooster fish opportunity that day.
05:19George Poveromo's World of Saltwater Fishing is proudly brought to you by Penn. Let the battle
05:25begin. Mako. You'll find them where the fish are. Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's. Your adventure
05:30starts here. Mercury Marine. Go boldly. George, we'll be right back.
05:35With rooster fish seemingly taunting us, Harry Vernon and I forge ahead in our quest to catch
05:41this elusive predator. We're fishing off El Salvador in Central America.
05:46So, George, he's up in the front of the boat. I'm back with all the live mullet swimming back
05:50in our spread. And sure enough, he hooks this fish. And I'm telling you, it was, it was a fight
05:56and a half. He's working this. Look at this. Thing going. Oh, man. Yeah, I think it was.
06:06It looked like a rooster. Thanks, George. Throwing the Williamson Kamami jig out there.
06:12This thing got drilled. Let it sink to about 10 seconds. A couple quick jerks and bam, I'm on.
06:19He's getting a little closer here. Let's see what he got. All right, straight up and down.
06:22What you got, bud? I'd like to get another glimpse of him. Go back, back. Oh, he's down near the bottom.
06:32Here he comes up. Here's the leader. No way. Are you kidding me? No way. No way this happened. No way.
06:39There is no way in the world this happened. This thing snagged him. It got eaten by what looked like
06:48a big jack or a rooster fish. I've seen it. Come on. Unbelievable. This thing is not going to pull
06:53that kind of line out. Seriously? Yes. You saw it on camera. I'm telling you what, you want to talk
07:00about the booby fries. I'm going to go get a rooster now. And he pulls up this little fish about this
07:06big. And a rooster fish ate it. And as I was fighting that fish, it regurgitated the thing out.
07:12When he pulled that up, we were all like, nah, come on. No way this happened. But it was pretty
07:18neat how that happened. And it got away. Sorry, sorry, George.
07:22Just a cold slap in the face. That one hurt.
07:35With rooster fish still avoiding our hooks, we keep busy catching big jacks.
07:39What do you got there, buddy? Big Jack Revell.
07:43Oh, good job. I'm free-lining this one here. All right. I'll get him.
07:47You get him? I will in a minute.
07:52There it is. Nice one. That's a fatty.
08:00And there it is, big jack.
08:09Oh, look at here. You got a big jack. What is it? What have you got?
08:13Jack. Yeah, big jack. It's a thumper fish. It's a false rooster.
08:24Oh, look at this guy here. This is a Florida rooster fish.
08:31And of course, the mackerel fishing certainly didn't disappoint.
08:35Look at this. You can probably flip them in, huh?
08:39Man, yeah, I will. The macks are chewing.
08:41I'm just going to fling them in.
08:43Fling it out of the way.
08:45Yep. Get out the way. Here we go.
08:48Here we go.
08:50These are bigger mackerel here.
08:52Want another Rapala? Check it out.
08:55All right. Check it out. The X-Wrap 15.
08:58This we put way back and out of nowhere, the mackerel are just tearing it up.
09:04Mono leader, not wire.
09:08You can use wire on there, but a lot of times the fish get hooked in the back or in the front.
09:15But you very seldom lose them, but you will lose them with mono.
09:18You get more strikes with mono than you do wire. Pretty cool.
09:21The rooster fish is the number one sought after inshore game fish along Central America's
09:26Pacific coast.
09:27These aggressive and powerful predators seek forage throughout lagoons, along shallow beaches
09:32and tight against islands washed by strong currents.
09:35When in hot pursuit of a surface lure or bait, their plumes stand direct, hence their namesake.
09:40Best bet, a noisy topwater chugger is hard to beat.
09:44Increase the speed when a rooster fish is in pursuit, teasing it to deliver a powerful strike.
09:49And artbypasta.com from catch-to-canvas rendering.
09:52Catch-to-canvas, baby.
09:54George Poveromo's world of saltwater fishing is proudly brought to you by
09:59Simrad, never settle.
10:02Rapala, holds the world record for world records.
10:06Suffix, always use the best line.
10:09Starbright, clean and protect with Starbright.
10:13George, we'll be right back.
10:15Will Harry Vernon check rooster fish off his bucket list?
10:19Or will this exotic species get the best of him?
10:22We're fishing along the beautiful coastal waters of El Salvador in Central America.
10:26And I'm telling you, these rooster fish were haunting Harry and taunting him too.
10:33The next example, that came 25, 30-some pound class rooster fish.
10:39Swimming up to the bow of the boat like a mahi would do.
10:42And that fish disappeared.
10:43Yeah, the rooster fish, they were taunting Harry.
10:46This was becoming a personal deal.
10:48I just happened to be on board as a witness.
10:50So, we're trawling our baits around.
10:59I'm letting this one bait pretty far back.
11:02Going back, going back.
11:04Then trying to get him into where the waves are breaking.
11:07And sure enough, I hooked this nice fish.
11:09And it's pulling pretty good.
11:11And I saw a big splash, and I'm like, what the heck is that?
11:13And then it leaps, okay?
11:15It's a hound fish.
11:16Oh!
11:19Oh, I didn't even have any idea.
11:21You got a lead room.
11:22Are you kidding me?
11:23Yeah, no.
11:24Oh, no.
11:25Oh, no way, man.
11:26This is, if you knew the story behind what happened to me one time,
11:30they scared the heck out of me.
11:32And I'm telling you, I've been stabbed by one right through my foot or my ankle.
11:36In one side and out the other.
11:38So, I get this thing to the boat.
11:40I'm so scared right now.
11:42They're standing in front of me.
11:45I've had bad luck with these things.
11:48Hey!
11:49And have a look at them.
11:50Come over here.
11:51Am I going to play around with them?
11:52Keep them away from me.
11:53That's all I got to ask you.
11:54Come over here.
11:57Oh, saltwater garfish.
11:59Take the hook out.
12:01No, I ain't taking the hook out, George.
12:04He grabs this thing, and he pulls it up my face.
12:07And I wanted it.
12:09I don't know what I was going to do.
12:11But if you kept pushing the envelope, I was getting pretty mad.
12:14Come on, Harry.
12:19Come on, let's go.
12:20No, you do it.
12:21Come on, I've only got two hands.
12:22No, I don't play with that.
12:23Come on.
12:24Those teeth are sharp, bro.
12:25I will do it again.
12:26All right.
12:27You want to release it?
12:28Nope.
12:29Throw it over there, buddy.
12:30You want them?
12:31No.
12:32That was a big...
12:33That was a huge one.
12:34That's not the size that went through my foot.
12:35What size went through your foot?
12:36It was like half that size.
12:37Thank God.
12:38If it was that size, it would have cut my foot off.
12:39Oh, Lordy.
12:40And I think he was getting me back from the prior time, me pouring water on his head.
12:55But he kept poking that thing.
12:58But the teeth on this thing, it's a crazy looking fish.
13:02But yeah, I caught a hound fish.
13:04So he got the hound fish off the list.
13:06And this time he actually caught it on hook and line and not with his ankle like it did the other one.
13:11So this was probably an IGFA legal catch for him as far as hound fish are concerned.

15:07We're pretty dejected, as was Captain Lucio and Junior.
15:12We can't let you leave without Harry getting his rooster fish.
15:15This is crunch time.
15:16I've got to do this rooster fish deal.
15:18And I'm super excited about it.
15:20And it's going to happen.
15:21I know it.
15:22I said, all right, Harry.
15:23All right.
15:24You got another shot at this thing.
15:26Let's make it happen.
15:28Uh-oh.
15:29Ah, man.
15:30Look at this.
15:31Look at this guy go.
15:33Hope he don't take me to the rock.
15:35Take me to church.
15:37This guy, I hit the two.
15:39Oh, look at this guy go.
15:41He hit the two lead off the rigger.
15:45What do you got, Harry?
15:47George, this guy pulled a lot of line in hard.
15:50Got a decent drag on him.
15:52But he's real close to that rock pile right now.
15:56I know you're familiar with that rock pile.
15:58Look at him hitting the surface here.
15:59Oh, yeah.
16:00Oh, gone.
16:01Nope.
16:02Nope.
16:03Just a sight.
16:05Can you see?
16:07Got a big jack?
16:09I don't know, George.
16:11Okay, now you want to grab the lead.
16:13Hang on.
16:16Okay.
16:17Two leaders.
16:19Whatever it is.
16:20See, at least get a glimpse.
16:22Let him do this thing.
16:23Remember, you're in good shape here now.
16:26Rooster!
16:27I didn't hear a crow.
16:29You got it.
16:31Uh, not yet.
16:33He's fighting this thing.
16:35And sure enough, we saw a couple glimpses of it as it turned.
16:39It's a big rooster fish.
16:41Finally got the rooster.
16:42Harry got it up there.
16:43I brought chicken feed.
16:45Throwing it out there.
16:46Instead of being your, uh, comic.
16:48Whee!
16:49Let's put this thing in, yeah.
16:50Focus.
16:51Yeah, right here.
16:52Focus.
16:53Yeah, focus.
16:54Focus.
16:55Harry's first rooster.
16:56I've caught mine before.
16:57Trips way down here.
16:59I know he wants it so badly.
17:01I'm not even dare attempt to wire this fish.
17:03Put the junior on it, you know.
17:05Otherwise, it'll be a long flight home if that leader shapes when they have it.
17:09Whatever goes wrong with that leader, I'll get the blame for it.
17:11So, I'm, I'm gonna be an observer.
17:14There's the leader.
17:20Woo!
17:21Look at that one.
17:22Holy rooster.
17:29Trying to wear him out before I get worn out.
17:32Trying to get him up.
17:33Oh, look at that.
17:34Go back.
17:35Go back.
17:36Go back.
17:37Go back.

17:46You're here for the celebration, Harry?
17:47You're your first rooster.
17:48Finally.
17:49An El Salvadorian rooster.
17:50Yeah, baby.
17:51Yee-haw, baby.
17:52Oh, pull the tail.
17:53My first.
17:54Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa.

17:56Okay, pull the plume up.
17:57There you go.
17:58Yeah.
17:59Yeah.
