00:00Key West in the Florida Keys offers a tremendous amount of light tackle
00:05fishing opportunities and in this world of saltwater fishing episode I'll be
00:09with longtime friend and light tackle guide Captain Mark Schmidt and you can
00:13bet we're gonna try to take advantage of a number of those opportunities stay

00:30George Boverum was world of saltwater fishing big fish don't stand a chance
00:47I almost hate to tell everybody how far back my history goes in fishing in the
00:57Florida Keys Key West specifically we spent a lot of time here and I even hate
01:02to tell you how long I've known Captain Mark Schmidt we go way back I remember
01:08when he first started guiding down here he's an outstanding light tackle pro and
01:13we became very good friends and throughout the decades we've done
01:16numerous shows together and spent a lot of time just out there fun fishing which
01:20brings us back to this incredible episode of world of saltwater fishing so the
01:26interesting thing about Key West is that you have the Gulf on one side and you
01:30have the Atlantic on the other you get all kinds of crazy species migrating
01:36between those two bodies of water also the amount of structure that we have
01:40down here whether it's the reef wrecks rock piles and then you have a
01:46shrimping fleet that works you know both the Atlantic and the Gulf side and the
01:51fish aggregate behind those boats at certain times of the year so there's just a
01:56myriad of opportunities down here so what to do this time we're gonna use a
02:02shotgun approach maybe more of a kaleidoscope of angling opportunities here
02:06and that's what we decided to do we had the mark six dock at each weekend which
02:12formerly was the Murray marine and which formerly before that believe it or not
02:17was boog pals anglers marine so again I hate telling you just how many years that
02:22has been but I have a long-standing history even at this marina
02:37so we met up took off it was a beautiful calm day left beach weekend got on the
02:44throttles brought those Mercury's up and we were flying it was a nice calm day and
02:49we decided to go ahead and run the south side until we got to Key West Harbor cut
02:54across Key West Harbor into the open Gulf and our first stop took us out to the
03:00shrimp boats and this is a prime time of year to get behind the shrimp boats and
03:05look for blackfin tuna and one crucial tactic is radar and flip that radar on
03:12and then we could start to see where the fleet was congregating and be able to
03:16start picking the boats that we wanted to try and fish behind so I have a sim rad
03:20with a halo for open-array antenna we had the radar all dialed in and about 24
03:26miles off we were noticing a cluster of what appeared to be shrimp boats
03:37so when you're approaching a shrimp boat most of these crews are very friendly but
03:43you want to go up if there's anybody on deck you know try to get their attention
03:48and they have they're culling the shrimp from the bycatch and the bycatch is
03:53crustaceans and fin fish and so what you want to try to do is secure a couple of
03:57baskets of that to use as bait for the rest of the day either behind the shrimp
04:01boats or on the wreck and they just sit here just take it and you know hey fish
04:05behind the boat we're you know we're glad to see you so you get behind the boat and
04:09you want to get up kind of tight to the boat at first and then you start doling
04:14out the trash and start just throwing pieces you know maybe a quarter of a
04:20bucket of a five gallon bucket worth at first and it's always amazing to me no
04:24matter how long I've done it that you can go from shrimp boat to shrimp boat to
04:28shrimp boat and one will be all sharks and then the next one might not have
04:33anything on it and then the next one boom it's nothing but little tunnies the
04:37little tunnies just it's an awesome game fish it doesn't have much food value but
04:42man they are solid muscle they're in the tuna family and they give you just a
04:47great fight dark oh I'm backing up mark hurry hurry all right we're good we're
04:54good we're good we're good neutral neutral I'm gonna spin the boat around to get
04:58you in the bow hang on but I'm coming around for you here
05:03all right caps all you I mean I could go after them or pull back I don't want you
05:13going back all right I'll go after them but not
05:16ah you just got eight ah all right we gotta re-rig some is this a family friendly show

05:45with our intended target of blackfin tuna nowhere in sight we decided to shift
05:51gears for another species and enjoy some action I'm fishing with Captain Mark Schmidt
05:56off Key West in the fabulous Florida Keys but we did see some pretty wild shark
06:02action and the highlight of this one boat here comes this big tiger shark yeah I
06:09mean we had perfect conditions and they just never happened so we shifted our
06:13focus so sayonara time to leave that shrimp boat find another one so we hit a
06:24couple shrimp boats and a couple of them absolutely nothing behind him Mark says
06:30okay go ahead and bring that bow just to the port side transom of this one shrimp
06:35boat and just slightly put the mark six off to the side where I get most of the
06:39sunlight you know behind me as I start throwing shrimp boat trash over he started
06:44thrown over shrimp boat trash all right I'm on are you good okay well I'm double up here we go
06:51I'm on two I might have come around you here mark where you at I'm over here be trying to go your way but I'll try to contain him here
07:06I think you're trying to get together mine's trying to come back your way George all right mine's trying to go to back of the boat and away all right let me let me walk back to you yeah trade places with you
07:17that big shark that was oh I know he's big
07:24you got yours up I got him
07:34there he is what do you want to do with a mark release them keep for bait let's
07:39release them we got one over bait there you go out here ease that down there buddy but
07:46you got them coming yeah you talked about these are powerful powerful fish hey
07:51they're in the tuna family they're not as prized food wise as a blackfin but
07:57they're huge fighters all right tuna circle
08:01and he's yours mark these are horse beneath them I mean they're monsters but they are monsters let me get
08:11them out for you I think you can tell they're a bloody fish okay launch them yeah
08:18we're gonna watch it here he goes once we were dialed into the little tunny it was
08:24rapid-fire action under heavy shark coverage
08:27on the rappeler twitching mullet he's got so stoked up on this channel I knew if I just lay that in
08:41there make it look like a piece of chum it got drilled I guess from the sound of things more hooked
08:47up over there too coming back to the back of the boat more all right coming around you going hey going
08:52under you so we come around here okay you got him I do have them so I guess you don't need me to net
09:06them then there you have it artificial very cool around the rappeler twitching mullet all right if
09:13you step one step to your right I could work on the left so yeah
09:22yes it's like the miami sea aquarium was brought to the gulf behind the shrimp boats and dropped
09:28off there there's no telling what you're going to see and I guess it works both ways as a curious
09:34pod of atlantic spotted dolphin approached the mark six it's a pretty incredible world out here

11:25we had a blood trail on this one yes they cut his motor off a little short

11:40all right close that right up as mark schmidt and i fished our way to shallow gulf rocks
11:45we happened upon schools of migrating tarpon of course we pitched everything from life crabs to lures at
11:52them without so much as a look fortunately the bottom fish were willing players cobia isn't it cobia
11:59long you document we got them all right come in and cap all right right here
12:17almost oh there's the hook hey good release not bad let go by the boat hey it's going to be released
12:23anyway key west online attractions are nearly endless and it's often difficult to choose which
12:29ones to fit into a day may suggest the key west butterfly and nature conservatory where you can walk
12:36among hundreds of free-flying butterflies and exotic birds and a glass dome butterfly habitat
12:42if you hadn't had your fill of fishing just quite yet head to the key west aquarium there's everything
12:48here from touch tanks to sea turtle conservation attractions the florida keys eco discovery center
12:54will provide a unique and highly visual perspective on florida keys ecosystems creatures history and
13:01conservation efforts and last but certainly not least take a tour of the papas polar rum distillery

14:14the shallow gulf rocks for some bottom fish action prior to running back to a deep gulf wreck toward the
14:20afternoon a lane snapper okay another variety lane
14:26there you go yellowtail this time not a bad one
14:39yellowtail so we decided let's go to another wreck that had a lot of permit and this was sort of
14:45planned to hit this wreck a little bit more in the afternoon when the sun was way up high
14:49we had slick ocean so when you approach a wreck you're very quiet
14:55person standing in the bow maybe one on the gunnels and you stand and you look for these schools
15:00of permit and you have a spinner ready with a live crab and you free line that down a bit and usually
15:08when a school comes past that crab they're gonna eat it and that's what we were doing and bam i got
15:14nailed and i'm on to a permit uh i'm around you let me go over i'll get to the bow mark i'll get to
15:23the bow we're not marking any structure down below that's good
15:32well look at them popping up there whatever's up there
15:35i don't know what i'm gonna do here but i gotta get around the gauntlet
15:38what now stand up on that cooler and fight them all right going on the cooler
15:45up on the angle
15:49here he's right here here he is
15:53i'll get nice and easy i see him down there a little bit always yep trying to get that head coming up
16:00nice there he is all right okay right into it there we go there we go
16:07all right there it is we got him yeah and we had a beautiful permit and i was really excited at that
16:14point it was just you know amazing to see that school and you make your shot way ahead of the school
16:21and they picked that crab off and uh released this fish and said mark let's get back up and do that again
16:26and went back on hunt looking for more permit the permit is one of the florida keys most sought after game
16:33fish especially when pursued on the flats and within channels however they amass on both the
16:38gulf and atlantic wrecks when spawning setting a stage for some challenging light tackle action
16:44best bet on the wrecks
16:45put a live crab down on a jig head while free lining one near the surface
16:51don't over gun the leader 30 pound test fluorocarbon is ideal

17:00and sure enough here they come again i let mark make a shot and he gets hooked up
17:05you can work me off the bow and if we can try to get away from the wreck the structure would be awesome
17:10we're coming off the wreck we ought to be okay he's out this way george i'm going after him
17:17boy when they decide they want to go they go just enjoy the fight it's not gonna be a shorter one
17:21just enjoy it yay we're away from the structure so enjoy the fight i think we gotta show oh look at
17:28that he's gonna get short let me go right up on him let me scare him if i could hang on i'm gonna go fast
17:32on him see him out there i'm gonna do my best that's why i'm fast i can scare the shark
17:40all right he's on the surface george oh oh hey zero boy nothing i can do at this stage and
17:48try to help you come on there's danger down there buddy you don't want to go down there
17:53like that you just had a range we're gonna get him don't rush him don't rush him i'm good
17:59yes you are even better now all right i tell you did your usual light tackle greatness but let me
18:09tell you what give me a little credit where that boat with that shark running down the sea yeah no
18:13you did a great job best i could you did a great job are you want me to take him out here what do you
18:17want i'll do it whatever all right go ahead in there okay net was clear you move this door
18:23brought a bucket out of your way all right george and all right so i wasn't taking any chances yeah
18:36well i can feel i'm starting to get us stronger now he's kicking on his own so thank you mr permit
18:43look at that mark there he goes
18:45after a solid fishing day with mark schmidt it was time to treat ourselves to dinner at hogfish
18:55grill on stock island we've dined here many times but this will be the first coming by boat
19:01in our case the mark six
19:06soon as we sat down here come the appetizers and the appetizers were just a meal all unto itself
19:15and if that uh wasn't enough here comes the main course fresh caught wahoo sauteed with capers and
19:22a seafood fajita it was just a totally an amazing dinner and of course bobby man jelly will not let
19:30you leave the hogfish grill without each and every one of us having a slice of his homemade key lime pie
19:38and a trip like this you you definitely deserve to live it relive it two or three or four times because
19:45it's key west so much light tackle opportunities here we have so many opportunities so many options
19:52down here in key west that we were able to just end up with some great fishing but i'm gonna bug george
19:59we're gonna go someplace wait and see wait and find out because it'll be good whatever we do
20:05and that's what mark schmidt and i decided to do long time friend of mine go out here and just bounce
20:11around and whatever happened happened and he usually does in a good way in key west in the fabulous
