00:00Go on, what's the best thing about those Spanish costas?
00:04I like getting the sand in between my toes.
00:06The great shops.
00:07Atmosphere.
00:08Sea.
00:09You hate the sea.
00:10Shut up.
00:11But one thing we could all agree on,
00:13with over 300 days of that glorious sunshine a year,
00:17it sure beats the cold and grey of the old UK.
00:21Ah, this is a lie.
00:23Living that dream can be blooming hard graft.
00:26Misting.
00:27My lad, you're right.
00:28Stress level.
00:29Through the roof.
00:31But at the end of the working day...
00:33Girl power.
00:34Girl power.
00:35Come on, Sam.
00:35Forward.
00:36Booyah.
00:37The quality of life on the costas...
00:39Is priceless.
00:44Cheers.
00:45Peace and love.
00:46Cheers.
00:47That's why there will always be...
00:49Start again, she's waffling.
00:50Oh, Kerry.
00:51A lot cheaper than England.
00:53Everybody's in that friendly zone.
00:54This is heaven.
00:56Bargain-loving Brits in the sun.
00:58Yeah.
00:58Today on the costas...
01:02We're all shook up as Simon faces a rock and rollercoaster day.
01:07I know why Elvis died at 42 now.
01:10I'm 65.
01:11It's going, going, gone.
01:1315, madam.
01:14In the sale of the century for Debbie.
01:16Wow, wow, wow.
01:18And a furniture flashback...
01:19This is where the magic is made.
01:21As Hayley goes for broke with a big new business.
01:24It's a risk that we've never, ever gone into manufacturing before.
01:34Hi, everybody.
01:35Welcome to Sunshine FM.
01:36Lovely to have your company today.
01:37It's another beautiful day here in Spain.
01:40It's an early start for the owner of a Costa Blanca radio network.
01:44We've got some great news here.
01:46If there's any songs you want, you let me know.
01:48Simon is also the station's breakfast DJ.
01:51Busy boy.
01:52The thing I love about being a radio DJ is that you're making people happy all the time.
01:57I've looked at on WhatsApp and Helen and Dream Hills.
01:59Don't forget my voucher.
02:01Oh, right.
02:01No, I won't.
02:02Neil and Ruby the dog, good morning to you as well.
02:06Music Mad Simon entertains the expat community with his dulcet tones and classic tunes every morning seven days a week.
02:15I've always loved music, ever since I was a boy.
02:17When I was five, I was sat at a piano.
02:19My mum made me play for an hour every day.
02:22But I'm glad now because I was in a church choir and things like that as well.
02:27But I've had music all my life.
02:28That was, in fact, the Trogs and Wild thing played backwards.
02:32I love all types of music and I always have done all my life.
02:35And I think I'm in a really lucky position to be able to play those on the radio every day.
02:40And we'll have a quick chat with Amy.
02:41I know she's got a great show.
02:43Here she comes in now.
02:44Morning, Amy.
02:45How you doing?
02:46Simon is passionate about performing.
02:48But the radio station isn't his only musical outlet.
02:51What have you got planned for your show?
02:52Anything good stuff?
02:53Lots of great tunes.
02:55Got quiz going as well?
02:56Yep.
02:56Later today, this talented musician has got a lucrative paying gig booked.
03:02I'm going to say my goodbyes now anyway.
03:03So God bless everyone and thanks very much for listening.
03:05Bye.
03:06In Spain, you have to do more than one thing because you never know if one can go quiet and the other can get busier.
03:12So I own a radio station, I'm a musician and a singer, I do bingo, I do anything for money just about.
03:20Well, within reason anyway.
03:22So I'm very busy indeed and it is a lot of hours of work.
03:27So what have you got planned this afternoon?
03:29We've got a busy day, yes.
03:30We're at the Sunset Cafe.
03:32We're going to be down there and Elvis Presley might be there as well as Frank Sinatra.
03:36All the legends sound that fun.
03:38And then tonight we've got Halloween because it's Halloween, the 31st of October today.
03:42So it's all happening.
03:44I'm 65 now and, you know, that age comes when you want to retire.
03:49But I do enjoy my job, so I'll probably carry on for a few years more.
03:54It's hard work.
03:54It's not easy, you know, it's 24-7.
03:57But it is good fun.
03:58It's great fun to do.
03:59Having signed off from his radio show, Simon's thoughts now turn to his big performance later today.
04:05Yeah, we've got a busy day ahead.
04:07It's going to be all the way till midnight tonight and we don't finish.
04:09I'll be sleeping well tonight.
04:11Bye, Amy.
04:11Thanks very much, Eve.
04:12Have a good show.
04:13God bless.
04:13Bye.
04:14See you tomorrow.
04:15Hopefully this one-man musical marathon can sustain this pace for the rest of the day or it'll be burnout before bedtime.
04:31Do I donate this one or the other one?
04:35This one follows you around the room.
04:38The leopard.
04:40Leopard's eyes.
04:40Um, spotted near Alicante.
04:43So there's that one or this one.
04:46Professional will writer Debbie is raising money for a very good cause.
04:51So one of them has to go or do I donate both of them?
04:54Very difficult decision.
04:56Very difficult decision.
04:58Oh, I'll donate both.
05:00It was the middle of last week when the news got to me that something absolutely terrible had happened around Valencia.
05:08In one day, the Valencia region had a whole year of rain in eight hours, a whole year of rain.
05:22It's unimaginable.
05:24It's unimaginable.
05:29When I saw it on the news, I was in shock.
05:31It was unbelievable.
05:34There were people clinging to cars and being swept away.
05:39And at first, people didn't know what to do, and then suddenly, everyone wanted to help.
05:48I nearly forgot.
05:49Very appropriate.
05:51A wine with legs and a waggy tail.
05:53I just want to do something this weekend to do a little fundraiser, but also to help the underdogs, excuse the pun, in animal rescue.
06:05There's going to be a little fundraiser at the auction that I go to sometime.
06:09I'm going to auction off my own personal items.
06:13Debbie's decided to raise money for pets and their owners affected by the floods.
06:17So when I first came to Spain, I volunteered in my spare time for some animal rescues.
06:23And hopefully today, we can raise some money for the medicines and also get some donations in.
06:31I'm going to say my goal today is 200 euros.
06:35Aim high and then overachieve it.
06:40Go on then, Debs. Let's hear your best David Dickinson.
06:42It's this amazing, unique, one-off little ducky made of Murano glass, which comes all the way from Italy.
06:49It's very rare. It's 30 years old.
06:52You'll never see another one of its kind.
06:53How much am I bid? Let's start with 30 euros.
06:56Sold.
06:57But before she gets her mitts on that gavel, she's got to get all her loot into the car and down to the auction.
07:03Hey. Hello. How are you?
07:05With the help of her neighbour and fellow charity cheerleader, Vicky.
07:09I've just had somebody deliver loads of donations, yeah, which is really great.
07:15It just turned up just now.
07:17As well as raising money for the animal rescue, the pair are also collecting useful items for people and their pets caught up in the disaster.
07:24We're going to take everything, all the bedding, all the donations, any funds that we raise,
07:29and we're going to take it to where I used to volunteer, and then they will distribute it.
07:33All right, let's get cracking.
07:34OK.
07:37That's amazing. Oh, that's amazing.
07:38That is a glass. That's plastic, so nothing will break.
07:43People just started rallying round.
07:46It was like the Blitz spirit.
07:48This is a unicorn made out of green mammoth fests.
07:50Oh, wow.
07:51Shall I put it in there?
07:52It just goes to show that in times of need, people will all band together and help out.
07:58We do have a sense of community here, and we care about the people that were affected in Valencia.
08:03I have in here, I have some cat litter.
08:07Lovely.
08:07I've got a couple of big bags of cat food.
08:10Oh, lovely.
08:11I was nervous about how much we would get in terms of donations, but this has blown my mind.
08:18I think it's going to be a great fundraising day.
08:21There's a lot of love around today.
08:24With both cars packed to the pistons, it's time to hit the road to the auction.
08:28Are you coming out with us?
08:30Are you going to help?
08:32It's all for a good cause, Tootsie, isn't it?
08:34Let's hope the day will be going, going, gone.
08:38Come on.
08:39Without a hitch.
08:44Coming up.
08:45Furniture high flyer Hayley hits the factory floor.
08:48This is a lot more difficult than it looks.
08:51And a whole lot of auction anxiety as Debbie's delights go under the hammer.
08:56Twelve anywhere.
08:57Twelve anywhere.
08:59Help me, please.
09:12About an hour south of Benidorm.
09:14So, let's have a little play in the park, eh?
09:17You'll find single mum Hayley and her two sons, Marcos and Oliver.
09:26She moved to Spain when she was just 16.
09:28Hiya.
09:29Hello, boys.
09:30Hello.
09:33And her mum and dad followed.
09:35I'm going to rush off to work, Mum, because I've got a busy day ahead of me.
09:39Love you.
09:40Bye.
09:40Bye-bye.
09:41Bye.
09:47You OK, Rob?
09:49Yeah.
09:49How was your evening?
09:51Morning, as usual.
09:52Another day in paradise.
09:53Since 2016, Hayley's been building up the family furniture business.
09:59And we've got some white den marks.
10:01Yeah, I've got white den marks as well.
10:03And with her is dad, Mark, a former market trader.
10:07It's my dad's fault that I'm so bossy, I think.
10:10I blame him for everything.
10:12And we're unpacking this classic piece and going back to when Hayley was about to take a huge risk with the business.
10:20We've got a new venture that we've just started recently, which is manufacturing.
10:25So we're now not only selling furniture, we're also actually making it as well.
10:29So this is where the magic is made.
10:36First of all, we've got this machine.
10:37It cuts the foam.
10:39We use it to plug the seats in the sofa.
10:41So me and my dad, in our wisdom, decided that we would do the manufacturing ourselves.
10:50We're now designing our own headboards ourselves.
10:53Sofas now as well, which we didn't do before.
10:57It's brand new.
10:58I love the colour as well.
11:00Oh, it's lovely.
11:00I'm really pleased with it.
11:06For us, this is a risk, you know, that we've never, ever gone into manufacturing before.
11:11This is the first time we've done anything like this.
11:14Such a big investment into manufacturing is a gamble.
11:17This new product launch needs to be a success.
11:22You know, if we want our business to improve, we have to make it bigger and do better.
11:27We're risking everything.
11:28You know, it's like dominoes.
11:29If one falls, everything falls.
11:31So we have to make this work.
11:41Busy, isn't it?
11:41It's really busy, which hopefully it's a really good sign.
11:44Fingers crossed.
11:45Kind-hearted Debbie and her neighbour Vicky...
11:48Right, what do you need a hand with?
11:50...have arrived at their favourite expat haunt to hold a charity auction.
11:55OK, so I'm just getting out the items that...
11:58Oh, I just pressed that bike, didn't I?
12:02Well, that's announced your arrival, Debbie.
12:04Yeah, I've got my glass stuck.
12:05That's it.
12:07Snow, don't get excited.
12:10Alongside the hundreds of people scrambling to help,
12:13our charitable chums are fundraising to buy medical supplies for animals caught up in the disaster.
12:19Let's hope she behaves herself today.
12:20I had a sleepless night last night thinking about it because I just want to raise enough money to make a difference,
12:29to get some prescriptions for the animals and things like that.
12:31Right, let's see if we can't get things organised.
12:36The local auction is taking place.
12:39They do it on a regular basis, a couple of times a month.
12:42And they've allowed me to actually, just at the beginning, try and raise some money and awareness.
12:47Debbie's aiming to raise 200 euros for the rescue charity she volunteers for.
12:52And she's scoured her own home for items to auction.
12:55I'm going to just pass you over to this young lady at the side of me.
13:00And she's going to explain what's happening.
13:03Here's hoping Debbie's got enough animal magnetism to persuade the crowd to part with their cash.
13:08I just want to thank everyone today for any donations that you make.
13:12It will be so well received.
13:13So, let's make a start.
13:17First up, the pooch-themed plonk.
13:20I like that one.
13:21I'll start this at 3 euro for anywhere.
13:25Can I have 4 for it?
13:274, 5 then.
13:296, 7 anywhere.
13:317 anywhere.
13:32It's away at 6 euros.
13:34Yours, number 27.
13:36It's a slow start, but let's hope Debbie's glass duck can raise a hefty bill.
13:415 to start me.
13:435, 6 anywhere.
13:456 anywhere.
13:46This is Murano glass.
13:477, 8, 9, 10, 11 anywhere.
13:53That's better.
13:5414 anywhere.
13:5515, madam.
13:57Another one.
13:5715, thank you.
13:5816, sir.
14:01OK, done.
14:02There we go, sir.
14:03Well done, Debbie.
14:0416 euros buys a lot of cat food.
14:07I've always liked to volunteer.
14:08Volunteer places all my life.
14:10Oh, 20.
14:11Then I had 22.
14:13But Spain has given me a new life.
14:18Spain has welcomed me with open arms.
14:2024 anywhere.
14:21It's away at 22.
14:24The lucky bloke with hair.
14:26I want to give back and I especially want to help the people of Valencia.
14:3010 items under the hammer.
14:3210 to start me again, surely.
14:34This is bound to be worth 10 euros.
14:37Or bringing in the books.
14:3812 anywhere.
14:4012 anywhere.
14:42Help me, please.
14:445, 6, 7, 8.
14:478 anywhere.
14:48It's away at 7 euros over here.
14:50The lady bought the bargain of the day.
14:52Well, us Brits do love a bargain.
14:54The lady there, number 38.
14:57The hammer's fallen for the last time.
15:00OK, I just want to say thank you to all that donated today.
15:03It's a very worthy cause.
15:04But even with the auction done...
15:06Thank you very much.
15:09Debbie's charitable efforts are far from over.
15:12Hopefully we've got a few more donations to come today.
15:15Fingers crossed.
15:21Debbie's not the only animal-mad Brit on the costas.
15:24Yeah, I've got a lot of dogs.
15:26I've got about nine dogs.
15:29While we're soaking up the rays,
15:31we're also missing our furry friends back home.
15:34I've got my little Tilly.
15:35I've got my Tilly Flossy at home.
15:38But I've noticed loads of people here with little doggies.
15:41So next time, I'm going to sneak from my case
15:43and bring her along with me.
15:44I have a car called Pablo.
15:46After the Escobar.
15:49We have one pet at home called Gizmo.
15:53A little Shih Tzu here.
15:54I beg your pardon?
15:56They're better than people in some...
15:57They don't answer you back and they'll give you a lot of love.
16:00Because it's a dog's life, isn't it?
16:04So we've got a busy day today.
16:10Obviously, I started at 7 o'clock this morning getting up
16:12and the radio show was at 8 o'clock.
16:15Hardest working man in showbiz, Simon,
16:17has a brief window between entertainment engagements.
16:21Just popping home now.
16:22We're going to go and see the missus,
16:24have a bit of lunch and just get ready for the gig.
16:26Time to come.
16:31Playing a reluctant chair to Simon Sonny is wife, Jane.
16:35And there's my wife, Jane.
16:36Hello, Jane.
16:39My wife, Jane, and I, we go back to...
16:42I think it's our 33rd wedding anniversary.
16:45I think I'm right in saying that.
16:46I hope so, anyway.
16:47But we met when I was about 30, just coming out of the Marines.
16:50We fell in love straight away and, you know,
16:55it was within a year, I think we were married.
16:58Jane and I make a great team
17:00and we're always having good fun as well.
17:01We have a really good life together.
17:03How is it going to be today then?
17:05I mean, is it going to be busy, do you think?
17:06It's been three days of really, really busyness,
17:09one after the other.
17:10You work too much.
17:12Well, one day we're going to try,
17:13we're going to have a great life together.
17:14We really are.
17:16Before we have an heart attack and die.
17:18I'm not a groupie, so I usually don't go and see him.
17:24And if I go and see him, then I tend to criticise.
17:30So, yeah, I tend to stay away.
17:37Jane may not be keen on the rock and roll wife style,
17:40but maestro Simon is fully committed.
17:43There's some of my Elvis costumes.
17:45Now, the Elvis costumes are made in America,
17:47the best ones.
17:48In fact, they're still the same company
17:50that made Elvis' costumes.
17:51I've got a nice red one as well.
17:53This was the hunk of burning love one.
17:55I reckon I've spent on Elvis costumes
17:56probably upwards of €10,000.
17:59I've got two white ones.
18:00Here's one of the white ones.
18:02I hope my wife's not listening to this.
18:04I'll be in trouble.
18:05Now, when you get a true Elvis costume
18:08and you put everything on,
18:09the proper boots,
18:10and some people even grow their hair,
18:13the very top ones,
18:14but I wear a wig.
18:15You actually feel, I'm not joking,
18:17you feel like you really are Elvis.
18:20But this Costa Blanket King
18:21can't live on performance passion alone.
18:24Look, that's signed by Bonham.
18:26It's all about that money, honey.
18:28When I moved here,
18:29I sold a nice house in the UK,
18:30so I'm pretty lucky.
18:31But you can struggle to be here
18:33because I wouldn't say the wages,
18:35they're not as high in here.
18:36There's a lot of self-employed as well.
18:39I got up at 7 o'clock this morning
18:40and then I started the show at 8 o'clock
18:42and I won't finish until probably midnight.
18:46Generally, it all comes at once
18:47or there's nothing.
18:48That's the way life works.
18:49Juggling the tribute acts,
18:51the radio station,
18:52singing and piano gigs
18:54with bingo calling
18:55means there's little time for much else,
18:58including music widow, Jane.
19:00OK, this is my studio
19:01where I spend a lot of hours here
19:02at the moment.
19:03Well, all the time.
19:05Making adverts,
19:06doing backing tracks.
19:09Salmon is very, very busy.
19:11We really don't see each other very much.
19:13I mean, the only time he's free
19:15is Sundays or a Tuesday afternoon.
19:20I'm 65 now
19:21and I think as you get older
19:22it becomes a bit harder.
19:23Everyone sees him as the performer
19:27and think that he's like that at home
19:29but he isn't.
19:30You know, when he's at home
19:31it's quite stressful
19:33because everything then is coming
19:34to the house, work-wise.
19:39It's not easy life, I wouldn't say,
19:42but if you try your hardest
19:43and you're good at what you do
19:44then you'll succeed.
19:47Simon's living his rock and roll fantasy
19:48while Jane's dreaming of them
19:50putting their feet up together.
19:52Here we go, I hope I've got everything.
19:54Oh yeah, I hope you have
19:55because I don't want to be bringing it down, do I?
19:58Okay.
19:58Elvis is leaving the building.
20:00Okay, good luck, have a good day.
20:02Briefest of break's over.
20:03Thanks, love you, bye.
20:04Bye.
20:05There's now just three hours
20:07until curtain up on this afternoon's gig.
20:09All done, ready to go.
20:11So come on, Simon.
20:12A little less conversation,
20:13a little more action.
20:14I need a button, yay!
20:21As part of her new bold business venture...
20:23See, I can do this, Javi.
20:25You can retire now.
20:27Entrepreneur Hayley is learning
20:28the nuts, bolts and buttons
20:30of making her furniture.
20:32My skills are more as a businesswoman
20:34rather than putting buttons on headboards
20:36and fitting headboards.
20:38It will hopefully help us sell
20:40the new furniture designs.
20:42But I will give anything a go.
20:44I think it's really important
20:45to understand at least a little bit
20:48of what's going on
20:50and the process of making stuff.
20:52Easier said than done.
20:54This is a lot more difficult than it looks.
20:57So Javi keeps on a little bit slow, but...
20:59I can do that, Javi.
21:05Yes, I'm good morning.
21:07Voilà .
21:08Headboard done.
21:09Fabulous.
21:10So we're just loading up
21:11the last lot now
21:12with our headboards
21:13and then our guys
21:15are going to get off.
21:16All right, let's get out of here, guys.
21:20See you later.
21:22For me today,
21:24it's been a real eye-opener.
21:27So I think there's a lot to it
21:29and there's still a lot more
21:30that I've got to learn.
21:32Back at the shop,
21:33it's time to try and sell
21:35some of that furniture.
21:37I always pass me
21:38some of those sales when going.
21:39You know, not many people get past me,
21:41but she's better.
21:43Right, let's go and do a minute.
21:45Yeah.
21:45Right, let me show you.
21:47This is one that we actually designed
21:48and made ourselves.
21:50Hayley's gamble with the factory
21:51is all to support her family.
21:53The last four years,
21:56my illness has suffered
21:57from diabetes that I've had for 35 years
22:01and then four years ago,
22:03I get diagnosed with kidney failure.
22:05But with him being ill,
22:06he hasn't had any choice
22:07but to step back a bit
22:08and I've had to kind of
22:09take over a little bit more
22:10in all aspects.
22:12Her and the staff here and my wife,
22:14they're just all battered together.
22:16I've had a heart attack.
22:17I've been in hospital.
22:18I've had pneumonia with COVID.
22:19I keep pulling through
22:20and they're all really surprised.
22:23But having any worries
22:24about this place
22:25while I was in the hospital?
22:26Not at all.
22:27And you really need to start?
22:28We make these ourselves.
22:31Manufacturing has been
22:31a massive gamble.
22:32They need customers
22:33to love the new range.
22:35I prefer to lie down on them though,
22:37you know.
22:38You're more than welcome
22:39to lie on it.
22:40You want to give it
22:41the ultimate test.
22:42It's come back in an hour, does it?
22:47The total works out
22:48€2,400 for the long.
22:52Right.
22:52Do you want it?
22:53Yeah.
22:54Ka-ching!
22:55First sale made.
22:56Thank you very much.
22:58All right.
22:59Thank you very much.
22:59Nice to meet you.
23:00Thank you, lovely to meet you.
23:03But Hayley can't put her feet up
23:05just yet.
23:06We've got a big order
23:07going out this morning.
23:08We've got to get it all loaded up,
23:10prepared,
23:11and delivered to her
23:12by half ten.
23:13So,
23:13we need to get out.
23:14We need to get it all sorted.
23:19Coming up.
23:20We're all ready to go.
23:21Rock and roll.
23:23Showtime for Simon
23:24suffers a setback.
23:25We've had a little bit
23:26of a hiccup this week.
23:27Oh,
23:28so exciting.
23:29And has Debbie's fundraising
23:31been a win
23:31or a washout?
23:33We're going to count
23:34this money now.
23:44I'm going to head off
23:46with the guys on the delivery.
23:48They know what they've got to do.
23:49They're going to load up.
23:50Hayley's delivering a big order,
23:52but she's hoping to boost the sale
23:53with an item from their new factory.
23:55And let's see if we can
23:57fit her in a headboard.
24:01If she wants it.
24:03Expanding the business
24:03has brought a lot
24:04of added pressure.
24:06We've always sold furniture,
24:08but we've never actually
24:08made furniture.
24:09So,
24:10it's a massive,
24:11massive challenge.
24:11It's all new for us.
24:12So,
24:13we do need to sell this stuff
24:14rather than just the furniture
24:15packs that we get in.
24:16While Hayley's off on the delivery,
24:19her dad Mark
24:19will be holding the fort.
24:22So,
24:22I'm on my own now this morning?
24:23You're on your own.
24:24Okay.
24:25I can't really leave him too long
24:27because with his health issues,
24:29he doesn't generally last all day
24:31and it's hot up there.
24:33And there's other pitfalls
24:34with leaving him in charge.
24:36Behave.
24:36This morning.
24:37Don't give to,
24:38you know,
24:38don't give everything away.
24:39I know I've made the customers,
24:40especially the old ones.
24:41I had a customer phone me yesterday
24:43and I said,
24:43oh,
24:43I'm not into my eyes.
24:44He said,
24:45oh,
24:45it's your dad.
24:45They said,
24:45oh,
24:45great,
24:46because he gives me stuff for free.
24:47I said,
24:48oh,
24:48does he now?
24:53The delivery is for customers
24:55Kate and Lee.
24:56Well,
24:57see you in a bit.
24:58See you in a bit.
24:59Bye-bye.
24:59Bye-bye.
25:00And Hayley's hopeful
25:01she can sell them
25:02some extra items
25:03for their new home.
25:05Oh,
25:06lovely.
25:08Oh,
25:08I love it.
25:10Oh,
25:10that's stunning.
25:11And all these lovely shutters.
25:13You wake up in the morning
25:14and just like,
25:14the shutters are.
25:17Oh,
25:17gorgeous.
25:18This could be
25:19the first bespoke order
25:21for Hayley's new factory.
25:23I was thinking
25:23we can go in
25:24and sort of
25:25have a look
25:26to see how
25:27that colour would go
25:27with the bedroom furniture
25:29and then maybe
25:30have a measure up
25:30and see
25:31how we can go
25:32from there.
25:33Yeah?
25:34Hopefully Hayley
25:34can work her magic
25:35and clinch the deal.
25:40Right,
25:40let's get cracking.
25:42Elvis impersonator,
25:43radio DJ
25:44and all-round
25:45impresario Simon
25:46is on his way
25:47to his second job
25:48of the day.
25:50I've got two gigs
25:51on today
25:51in Sunset Cafe
25:53which is down
25:53in Los Altos
25:54in Oriola Costa
25:55and I play there
25:56every Thursday.
25:57Hi, folks.
25:58Hi, how are you doing?
25:59All right, nice to see you.
26:00I do a bit of cabaret,
26:02a bit of karaoke,
26:03a bit of live music
26:04so I try and mix it up
26:05and make it
26:06as entertaining
26:06as possible.
26:08Oh, I can't wait.
26:09Simon will be
26:10warming up
26:10a hopefully packed crowd
26:12with some piano
26:13and trumpet numbers
26:14before transforming
26:15the two megastar
26:16tribute acts.
26:18I'm very thick-skinned
26:19so I don't get nervous
26:20because it's been
26:21my job all my life
26:22and you get a little bit
26:23but not as much
26:24as, you know,
26:25as much as you used to.
26:25Part of my love of music
26:27was what to do
26:29when I was 16
26:30and left
26:30grammar school
26:32at Doncaster
26:32in Yorkshire
26:33and I think
26:34how do you make a living
26:35doing music
26:35and one of the only ways
26:36really then
26:37was to be a military musician
26:39so I joined
26:39the Royal Marines Band Service
26:40for 14 years,
26:42went all around the world
26:43had a great time.
26:44So here we go
26:45at B-Fat Trumpet
26:46I've got my spit valve here
26:48whilst I'm just empty
26:49because you don't want
26:51that rattling around
26:51when you're playing
26:52and then you should do
26:53flexibilities
26:54and a bit of tonguing
26:55just to get your lip in.
27:00I still play the trumpet
27:01and I play the keyboards
27:02as well,
27:03I'm singing
27:03so I'm very lucky indeed
27:05and I really enjoy
27:06doing the job I do.
27:07Are we all ready to go?
27:08I think we're ready to go
27:09don't we?
27:09We get a good crowd
27:10yeah,
27:10everything's in ship shape.
27:13Bar owner Hayden
27:13has no doubt
27:14about Simon's work ethic.
27:16You are one of the most
27:18dedicated people
27:19I know in the circuits
27:20around here
27:21anywhere in Orivala Costa
27:22every day
27:23he's got
27:24the breakfast show
27:25he's got
27:26the evening show
27:26on Sundays
27:27he's got
27:28all the gigs he does
27:29it's just unbelievable.
27:32It would be great
27:32for him to do
27:33but on the second hand
27:34no,
27:34we can't
27:35we can't
27:35not have Simon around.
27:38Okay,
27:39so we're all ready
27:39to set and go now
27:41this is stage area lobby
27:42and over here
27:43is the stop room
27:45which is Elvis's
27:46green room.
27:48It's free drinks
27:49apparently.
27:51It's here
27:52in the glamorous
27:53confines of this
27:54store cupboard
27:54Simon will transform
27:56himself into his
27:57musical alter egos.
27:59This is my
27:59best Elvis costume
28:02it's called
28:02the American Eagle
28:03and just getting it ready
28:06and then beyond that
28:07we've got Frank Sinatra
28:09and his trilby
28:09it's a bit
28:10and he's pushing out
28:11what should be kept
28:12in a box or something
28:13there we go
28:13we're all ready to go
28:14rock and roll.
28:15the costumes
28:16may be all present
28:17and correct
28:18but the same
28:19can't be said
28:19for the audience
28:20we've had a little bit
28:22of a hiccup this week
28:23because with the
28:24clocks going back
28:24we're not sure
28:25the messages got out
28:26because this place
28:27is normally
28:28gave in now.
28:29No paying punters
28:30is bad news
28:31for a performer
28:32like Simon.
28:33Yes I do get a buzz
28:34from the audience
28:34especially you know
28:35the bigger the audience
28:36the bigger the buzz
28:37obviously.
28:38In the winter
28:38it can be quite hard
28:40work as well.
28:41We need a few more
28:42people it's still
28:43a bit quiet
28:44so hopefully more
28:45people will turn up
28:46there's not that many
28:46here at the moment.
28:59We didn't want
29:00the memory of
29:01Woody to leave us
29:02so we take
29:03this little chap
29:04everywhere with us.
29:08We had a favourite pet
29:10don't let Chico know
29:11but our favourite pet
29:12was Woody.
29:16Fifteen wasn't he?
29:19He was fifteen
29:20was he was
29:21so we carry this
29:22little Westie
29:23around with us.
29:29It's so precious
29:31to us because
29:32it holds a part
29:33of Woody
29:33inside of him
29:34he actually has
29:35Woody's hair
29:37inside of him
29:38so
29:38it comes
29:40everywhere with us
29:41and we never
29:41want to let that
29:42memory of Woody
29:42leave us.
29:46Back in
29:49Benny Hoffa

30:09inclined to go with
30:10like a turquoise
30:11colour headboard
30:12which is what we
30:12can make for her
30:13With a bespoke
30:14headboard on the
30:15cards
30:16She'll be adding
30:20an extra 300
30:21euros to a

30:24Who's going to
30:25christen it

34:06or crashed out?
34:07So exciting
34:10Fine Vicky
34:11We're going to count
34:12this money now
34:13Okay
34:13Well let's see
34:15what we've got
34:15shall we?
34:16You ready?
34:17Yeah
34:17Well let's do the notes
34:20first
34:20Those are the notes
34:21Oh
34:2160, 70
34:22No
34:2380, 90
34:25100
34:25110
34:26120
34:27I had no idea
34:29where we'd make it
34:29I thought we'd be lucky
34:30to get 100
34:31But as the coins are counted
34:33No pressure
34:34It is when everyone's watching
34:35Can't speak
34:40Let's hope
34:41Let's hope the final
34:42total makes the day's
34:43efforts worthwhile
34:44What is it?
34:48Coming up
34:49Curtain up for Simon
34:51as long as he can
34:52get dressed in time
34:53Because we've got
34:54about three minutes
34:55between each costume
34:55So it's a bit of a
34:56situation
34:58Oh my
35:00Oh my gosh
35:00And Debbie delivers
35:02for the doggies
35:03Wow
35:04It's Curtain up in
35:15Aruella
35:15as dedicated showman
35:16Simon warms up the crowd
35:18Who we've got for you
35:19today folks
35:20We've got Frank Sinatra
35:21all the way from New York
35:23And then real
35:25Yes real
35:26Envy's Presley
35:28The changing of the clock
35:30sparked an earlier panic
35:31about audience numbers
35:32But the place is filled up
35:34nicely
35:34And even wife Jane
35:36has turned up
35:36to show her support
35:38I have to watch
35:40what I'm doing
35:40because she's a
35:41Robbie Williams fan
35:42She's not really
35:42into Elvis too much
35:43So I have to try
35:44and play some
35:45Robbie Williams as well
35:46First on the bill
35:47Old Blue Eyes himself
35:49And Frank Sinatra next
35:51So I'm just getting changed
35:52because we've got
35:52about three minutes
35:53between each costume
35:54It's a bit of a
35:55with a
35:57situation
35:58Yeah they're a really nice
36:00crowd
36:00There's more in now
36:01so we can have
36:02a bit more of a
36:03Yeah the more people
36:04are easy it is to play
36:05I think
36:05Oh yeah you weren't
36:06kidding about the state
36:07of that hat
36:08were you Simon
36:08Well I think we're
36:09ready to go
36:10Despite Simon's
36:18commitment to a life
36:19of music
36:20devoted wife Jane
36:21craves a quieter life
36:22Showtime is quite
36:24awkward for me
36:25because yeah
36:26I do think it goes
36:27over the top
36:27sometimes
36:28Hello honey
36:28how you doing
36:29baby
36:29Captain's here
36:32Captain Birdseye
36:33I found it
36:35quite embarrassing
36:36but
36:36you know
36:37that's because
36:38he's my husband
36:38I suppose
36:39Thank you folks
36:43God bless you
36:44It's so long
36:46Sinatra
36:46and back to the
36:47broom cupboard
36:47for a speedy
36:48costume change
36:49Elvis is the
36:51hard one
36:51because you really
36:52have to put your
36:53body into that
36:54and you have to
36:54jiggle around
36:55and you know
36:55you've got to
36:56warm up your
36:56hips and everything
36:57The wife may be
36:58encouraging retirement
36:59for 65 year old
37:00Simon but the
37:01maestro is
37:02determined to
37:03deliver
37:03Coming up to
37:04showtime now
37:05Well I mean that
37:06wig is less Elvis
37:07more Elton John
37:08We've got a few
37:09minutes left
37:09a few seconds left
37:10So we're on now
37:14Here we go
37:15Howdy Fox
37:16How you doing
37:16He may be lacking
37:17lift on the quiff
37:18but after decades
37:20as a musical performer
37:21Simon knows how to
37:23work a crowd
37:24You can get
37:31audiences and
37:32they're just
37:32sitting there
37:32looking at you
37:33and they don't do
37:34anything
37:34and it's really
37:35hard work
37:35and then other
37:36times you can get
37:37audiences where
37:38they're up and
37:38dancing straight away
37:39and then it's much
37:40easier but that's
37:41part of being a
37:42professional I would
37:43say
37:43Thank you folks
37:53Thank you
37:53Elvis has been a
37:55big hit
37:56Literally
38:00I bet that's
38:03left her all
38:03shook up
38:03Thank you
38:05Mums
38:05God bless you
38:06Elvis is leaving
38:07the building
38:08He was brilliant
38:09He's always on top
38:11Yeah
38:11He keeps a good
38:12show
38:12Gets everybody
38:14going
38:15and he's just
38:16fantastic
38:16I know why
38:18Elvis died at
38:1942 now
38:20I'm 65
38:22My wife Jane and
38:26John my father are
38:26in the crowd and
38:27having a really good
38:28time tonight so it
38:29makes it extra
38:29special when they're
38:30there
38:30But wife Jane doesn't
38:32get to go home with
38:33Elvis just yet
38:34So this isn't the
38:35finish
38:36He's got to go on
38:37now and do another
38:38gig
38:38But that's how it goes
38:40He loves it
38:41He knows so
38:42long may it continue
38:44Dimey
38:45I bet Priscilla was a bit
38:46more enthusiastic
38:47It's been a great day today
38:49and we've had a really good time
38:50So it's viva
38:52Areola
38:53Thank you
38:54God bless you
38:55Elvis is leaving the building
38:57Well let's see if we can find Danny
39:08Debbie and her neighbour Vicky
39:09have spent the day
39:10collecting money
39:11and pet supplies
39:12for the victims
39:13of the Valentian floods

39:24to Danny
39:25I volunteered at a couple of charities
39:27animal rescue charities
39:28and through that
39:30I met Danny
39:31Danny
39:32is an earth angel
39:34and he will rescue
39:36all types of animals
39:37not just dogs and cats
39:38He's absolutely
39:40passionate about rescue

39:44get some items
39:45for donation
39:46for
39:47the smaller rescues
39:49that have been affected
39:50by the flooding
39:50and we managed to get
39:53what
39:53we filled up
39:54both our cars
39:55Oh my god
39:56So yes
39:57unload all the stuff
39:58and then they will
39:59distribute it

40:16so he obviously
40:17has been going backwards
40:17and forwards
40:18all the time
40:19helping in the mud
40:20to clear places
40:21to repair

40:34and I'll try
40:35but it's so much
40:36that I'm
40:37going to ask my friend
40:39to
40:39help me with the stuff
40:41to bring it to Valencia
