00:00we're back on the road in our trusty traveling auction house on the hunt for treasures hidden
00:11in homes all across Britain oh yes finding value in those overlooked objects auction
00:18supremos Izzy Barmer excited James Broad and Bryony Harford Wow the star lot of the day
00:26and transforming has-beens into must-haves restorers JJ Chalmers Robin Johnson Lauren
00:34Wood and Saf Fakir our mission beautiful to give those unloved and forgotten gems a new lease of
00:42life and make their owners some much-needed money we've got three to four thousand everything we
00:49find and fix we'll go under our gavel as we bring our auctions to you four thousand one hundred
00:56pounds well you know what we say have gavel we'll travel
01:09one babe
01:10woodworker Saf and auctioneer B are zooming towards the Norfolk town of Hunstanton a popular
01:19Victorian seaside resort since the mid 19th century are you enjoying being my passenger princess I am
01:27being your princess today this is a first for me come on you two we have a very important job to do
01:34it's got enough dust on it I think it's they're meeting sisters Charlotte and Lauren in this five
01:45bed family house overflowing with memories it's really special house for us this house to me is
01:51like the place where you want to go for Christmas like it's the place to gather everybody Nan Noreen and
02:00granddad Gerald met over 60 years ago and their love story began in a bakery they took a little
02:07liking to each other so I think she'd give him some extra cakes and I think it went from there really so
02:14our granddad had his own little antiques shop so he just loved collecting stuff they built 40 years of
02:23life together until tragedy struck in early 2000 when our granddad passed away she really
02:29wanted to spend more time with us here as a family Noreen moved to this house and for the next 20 years
02:37she was the family's heart until the arrival of upsetting news she was diagnosed with dementia
02:44and she deteriorated really quickly she had to go into a care home which was really awful for everybody
02:53last summer the family was caught between joy and sorrow so the week that she passed I was due to have my
03:10son so it's a really it's a really tough week actually I was sorting out a death certificate and a birth certificate at the same time
03:21who does that a week of beginnings and endings the house is now going on the market and its contents must
03:30be cleared fast because we also have our granddad stuff just needed to be sorted boxes brim with buried
03:40bounty even battle helmets beckon someone that's going to know about it appreciate it because we
03:46don't know anything about it and I know the perfect pairing for this mission I think we have to be quite
03:52sensitive on this one especially if she only passed away recently it's tough isn't it
03:59this is the one this is it
04:01hey great to see you do you want to come in yes please
04:12we're super excited to be here so thank you for inviting us but I just want to check we can search
04:20from top to bottom yeah of course yes anywhere brilliant
04:23we better roll up our sleeves we have our work cut out three floors five bedrooms and only one day
04:33to scour every inch of nan noreen's house that's crammed to capacity with cherished belongings
04:40nice little tantalus lucky bee has the very rare opportunity to explore the treasures of an antiques
04:49dealer you know the job of a traveling auctioneer is not quick and easy but what is here is really
04:57important the military for example you need to look at it properly each piece is it reproduction is it
05:03period what country is it come from what age is it these things take time from feeling a little bit
05:10up against it while Saf needs to rifle through mountains of boxes for restoration possibles this
05:17is nice there's lots to go through there's two lifetimes worth of stuff in there hopefully Charlotte and
05:25Lauren have left out a collection of Nan and Grandad's jewelry for bee to cast her expert eye over in the
05:31sitting room I've got my silver on the left and my gold on the right bee has her trusty scales because the
05:39weight and purity of gold and silver can help determine its value and just here we've got a
05:44beautiful nine karat gold simulated bamboo bangle I really love that it's a beautiful piece with an
05:54estimate of between 200 and 260 pounds this is a welcome find bee also discovers two pairs of nine
06:03karat gold cufflinks with an estimate of 360 to 450 pounds a nine karat gold masonic signet ring and a 14
06:14karat gold signet ring centrally set with a ruby but the thing that I'm most excited by is this piece of
06:22jewelry and we'll call it jewelry because it's mounted as a pendant here on a chain but actually
06:30inset is this fantastic 1904 22 karat gold American 20 dollar coin American coins like this were never
06:45hallmarked in 1904 American coins had no hallmarks because their weight and purity were guaranteed by
06:53federal law and the u.s. mint at auction I can see this making anywhere between 1200 and 1800 pounds a
07:02real gem to have found today what a way to start B and with a conservative estimate to draw in the bidders
07:11this could really fly at auction oh wow oh that's nice that looks interesting and definitely needs
07:24fixing better see what B thinks oh what do you think of this oh that's lovely it's nice isn't it do you
07:32know what it is a helmet it is a helmet or replica this does come off a little bit this is a sort of
07:40second half of the 20th century but it's a household cavalry lifeguards troopers parade helmet the
07:48household cavalry is made up of two of the most senior regiments in the British army introduced
07:55by Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert back in 1862 hence the reason it's referred to as an Albert
08:02helmet the plume needs a bit of work that's a good find that is a good find it looks like you've got
08:08the all clear Saf but in its current state it's a little tired lots to do to make it auction ready
08:15time to pitch base camp and deploy the little blue van filled with an arsenal of handy tools
08:22to help Saf revive this impressive household cavalry lifeguard style helmet right now this is an
08:32interesting one I think the plume could do with a bit of a clean need to fix that back on see find a
08:36bolt somewhere then I'll deal with hair which I've not to deal with a good 20 years so that'll be
08:42interesting now the helmet itself it's quite impressive we did say I'm okay to polish it up
08:48sometimes they do need to leave the patina because add the value to it but this can need a bit of shine
08:53so there are a few techniques you can use but I think I'm gonna go with a straight on with the proper
08:59polish metal polisher in this instance the shinier the better if it was original we'd keep the patina but
09:06as it's a replica it's better to shine it up get some of this metal polish just give it a go the metal
09:14polish is removing years of staining and can also act as a protector too I can see me definitely a
09:21mirror-like shine now because of the detail of the helmet the cloth really doesn't get into all the
09:28little nooks and crannies so the best way to do that is with a toothbrush now I've just dipped it into
09:33the metal polish I'm actually just agitating the grime and the dirt with it I'm just being careful not to
09:41flick any of that into my eyes being very gentle it's good in a circular motion look at that it's
09:49done a brilliant job all I've got to do is the rest of the helmet Saf is being ultra careful the helmet appears to be
09:57sturdy but is fragile in the finer details the replica helmet was a favorite of granddad Gerald's
10:08well our granddad joined a society in the 70s well helped start it up he joined the Viking Society which
10:17was known as the Norse Film and Pageant Society at the time and they did reenactments and so he ended up
10:25with a really big collection of things from there you can say that again granddad Gerald was a big fan
10:32of militaria and bees happened upon some quirky finds in a spare bedroom we have this really fabulous
10:41Indian dal shield and this is from the 19th century and it's so typically Indian in design with this beautiful
10:52detailing but also these very very typical four roundels this Indian round shield is known as a
11:02dal usually made of steel or lacquered hide the large smooth surface gave Indian craftsmen an opportunity
11:09to indulge their passion for decoration so I'm going to group this Indian dal together with a 19th century
11:20Indian helmet now this still has remnants of its original chain mail we've got this lovely gilt
11:30decoration along the top the cooler kud helmet translates to cap helmet it was used by Indian soldiers in the 1800s so I think putting together our 19th century Indian helmet and our 19th century Indian shield the two together at auction should make in the region of a hundred to two hundred pounds I think they're a great collector's piece for any military collector
11:56out there and then we have these two chaps they are reproduction great helms from the 13th century and easily together they can make sixty to a hundred pounds at auction
12:08this is the room that just keeps giving we also have a bundle of arrows and throwing darts with a potential of forty to sixty pounds
12:17and a reproduction Elkington and co electroplated shield possibly fetching as much as sixty pounds
12:24what a haul of granddad's military
12:28charlotte and lauren have big plans for the money raised at auction all in honor of their beloved grandparents
12:37we were really lucky when we were little because our man had a friend who had a nice property in the south of France and he would always let her take us there
12:46whenever we wanted in the summer
12:49the sisters plan on spending the money on a family holiday back to the south of France
12:55but a trip for both Charlotte and Lauren's families to their sun-drenched Gaelic getaway could cost in excess of six thousand pounds
13:03what we're really hoping is to make some more memories because that's the whole reason we're doing this
13:10our memories are really lovely of our nan and granddad and we just want to make some more lovely memories for our kids as a family together
13:19returning to the spot that gave Noreen so much joy will help Charlotte and Lauren in their journey of healing
13:25I just feel like my nan to me is like a lot of the reason of who I am
13:34even when I'm like slouching I can just hear her saying pick your shoulders back suck suck up some again
13:39definitely she was a big part of what kept us all together
13:44it's clear just how much now Noreen was very much loved
13:48let's make that holiday in the south of France a reality
13:53onwards to the sitting room where Charlotte has been busy delving
13:57hey I've got something to show you here
13:59ah fantastic
14:01well I like the colour of the box already
14:04and yes
14:06we have a beautiful
14:08Tiffany necklace
14:10so what the back here tells us is that the yellow metal is 18 carat gold
14:17and the silver is exactly that it's 925 sterling silver
14:22but what I really love is this interlocking heart design
14:27but it looks almost perfect has this not been worn very much
14:31I don't remember my nan ever wearing this
14:33really?
14:34or yeah not sure why
14:36but jewellery wasn't really her thing
14:38well I would be delighted to take this off your hands
14:41perfect thank you very much
14:42leave it with me
14:43cheers
14:44thank you
14:45great find Charlotte
14:47such a high-end luxury brand could fetch as much as a thousand pounds
14:52with nan's jewelry and grandad's militaria
14:55we're gathering momentum with lots of auction possibles
15:02outside with the helmet shining
15:04Saf can turn his attention to the plume
15:07I'm gonna use something quite gentle on this
15:10now baby shampoo
15:13is quite mild
15:14it's quite gentle
15:15it's got very little chemicals hopefully
15:18and I think that'll do a grand job of just softening this up
15:21just so I can tame it a little bit
15:23now it's been a while since I've washed anybody's hair
15:26hmm especially your own
15:28now you can see straight away the water's gone mucky
15:32to be fair
15:33do you know what that's actually quite soft
15:36doesn't feel as greasy really
15:38but you need to be careful Saf
15:40gently does it
15:42it's out of the soapy bath now
15:43I'm actually giving it a little comb as well
15:46it's running through it beautifully
15:48look at that
15:49move over Vidal Sassoon
15:51I'm just gonna leave that in the sun to dry a little bit
15:55very pleased with that
15:57oh gosh Saf you're a salon pro
16:00let's hope it dries smooth and silky
16:03and while you wait for the hair to dry
16:05you can find your next task
16:06meanwhile B's upstairs having a good old rummage
16:10ooh
16:13what you got there?
16:14hello
16:15it's a fabulous reproduction suit of armour
16:18looks like he's fainted B
16:19but it's kind of in bits at the moment
16:22but Saf look
16:24I mean it's really got
16:26oh
16:27the potential
16:28yeah
16:29to look so impressive
16:31it looks impressive as it is
16:32it does but you know
16:33it's missing a leg
16:34well his leg is here
16:36his gauntlets are here
16:37he's got it all
16:39oh I can feel a bat coming
16:41but the problem is
16:42he doesn't stand up
16:43no
16:44and I want him to be
16:46a fantastic statement piece
16:48is this something that you could do?
16:50definitely
16:51I mean it's not our normal stuff
16:52but I can make him stand up I reckon
16:54yeah a nice display
16:55just so he looks the part
16:57definitely
16:58so what do you reckon the value is?
17:00I think like this
17:01it's kind of
17:02£60
17:03£80
17:04something like that
17:05this looks great in my office by the way
17:06there you are
17:08and once Saf puts his restoration skills to action
17:11this will increase the value
17:13now
17:14you just need to get
17:16Sir Lancelot downstairs somehow
17:18how's that?
17:19keep going
17:20keep going
17:21but with most of the pieces unattached
17:24getting it out to the van
17:25is a job in itself
17:27oh
17:28don't forget those legs B
17:30let's prepare for some medieval surgery
17:33right
17:34don't know if there's a left and right
17:40well you'd better find out quite sharpish
17:44the patient awaits
17:46what's the diagnosis Saf?
17:48considering it's a suit of armour
17:50it's actually really flexible
17:52I think that's how it goes
17:53what I need to do
17:55create like a really nice base
17:57so it'll stand up
17:58making this night battle ready
18:00is a first
18:01for our trusty restorer
18:03and to get him back on his feet
18:05Saf needs to make a base
18:07but with so much to do today
18:09he needs to get cracking
18:11lickety-split
18:13now if you don't have a set squared hand
18:15swords like these are very very handy
18:16you've actually got a 45 and a 90 degree
18:19built in to the actual blade
18:20so if I push this against there
18:22that's where I want
18:23mark my line
18:24that's a perfect 90 degrees
18:26ooh good tip Saf
18:28so this timber is going to go
18:30on the back of the spine
18:31just there
18:32this one is going to go between the two feet
18:36kind of there
18:37lift it up
18:38now I'm going to cut two more pieces
18:40just like this
18:41and that'll create from one side
18:42to the back piece
18:43and this side to the back piece
18:45and create a tripod essentially
18:47without a suitable stable base
18:49the heavy suit of our might
18:51could potentially fall over
18:52not a good look in the auction room
18:55better make this extra sturdy Saf
18:58so I've got my back piece
19:00the spine
19:01got my two legs
19:03that's going to go across there
19:05that's going to go across there
19:07and that'll create my triangle
19:09in that kind of shape
19:11lots to do Saf
19:13best let you get on
19:15meanwhile Bea has made her way
19:17to the third floor
19:19wow
19:21even more boxes
19:23this looks like
19:25a toy box
19:26ah
19:27Bea has found another grandad collection
19:30I think these are Japanese
19:32the market at the moment for Japanese toys
19:35is really strong
19:36and isn't that
19:38a formidable thing
19:39anything space or robot always does well
19:42limited runs and iconic designs
19:44have turned Japanese retro remote controlled toys
19:47into highly sought after fast rising collectibles
19:50and it looks like
19:52anything else in there
19:54we have another robot toy here
19:57Chinese by the looks of things
19:59oh but look at him
20:01he's great
20:05I mean easily now
20:09we're getting a lot together here of toys
20:12what else do we have
20:14ah
20:15a remote control Lancia here
20:18bit more recognisable to me and up my street
20:22as a specialist in high-end car auctions
20:25Bea's as comfortable selling Ferraris from the rostrum
20:28as she is rifling through boxes in spare rooms
20:31I'm going to put a sort of attractive estimate on this
20:35in the region of 40 to 60 pounds
20:38and kind of let's see what happens on the day kind of thing
20:41good idea Bea
20:43what a fun find
20:44out at the van
20:46Saf's on a mission
20:47with the reproduction suit of armour
20:49it's having its base firmly attached
20:52but it's gloriously heavy
20:54here's to a stable knight
20:56and no surprise face plants
20:58Sir Lancelot is on his feet
21:00so I'm going to use this bit of timber here
21:03use the back support
21:05we'll rest it on there
21:06get it nice and level
21:08we've got a long screw
21:10I think it's finally stood up
21:12result
21:13great work Saf
21:14standing
21:15that's not bad
21:16it's harder than I thought
21:18our poorly knight now looks just about ready
21:21to rescue a fair damsel
21:23now that I've got him standing
21:25the base actually stands out in miles
21:27so I'm trying to tint it
21:28similar colour to the original base
21:31now I've chosen a walnut
21:33it does look grey
21:34but trust me
21:35it does dry
21:36like a deep brown
21:38Saf will need to let the stain dry
21:40before he can buff the reproduction suit of armour
21:42to be shiny
21:43and auction ready
21:45while Saf hunts for his next job
21:47Bea's exploring the garden
21:49oh
21:50we've got this lovely oak and brass ship's wheel
22:01now goodness me that's heavy
22:03the brass content alone of this is worth something
22:07and we can see it's not hugely old
22:10but as a decorator's piece
22:13hanging that up on the wall
22:16I think that's a really nice thing
22:18ship's wheels are an iconic design
22:20that can still sail to the top at auction
22:23not only are they easy to repurpose
22:25but originals from the 19th and early 20th centuries
22:28are relatively rare
22:30and can therefore attract lots of buyers
22:33I think for a little one like this
22:35we're probably looking at 40 to 60 pounds
22:38definitely one for the yes pile
22:40amazing what you can find in a garden shed
22:44the ship's wheel can join Bea's jewellry
22:49including the 1904 gold $20 coin
22:53a real gem to have found today
22:55a mountain of militaria including the Dahl and the Kula Kud
22:59I think they're a great collector's piece
23:01a bundle of arrows and throwing darts
23:04two great helms and an electroplated shield
23:08also going into the catalogue are the vintage battery operated toys
23:13isn't that a formidable thing
23:16and not forgetting the replica household cavalry lifeguard helmet
23:20and a reproduction suit of armour under repair
23:24with everyone searching high and low
23:28Bea's diving into the treasures of an upstairs small bedroom
23:33that's screaming 60s, 70s psychedelia isn't it?
23:41that's a groovy little find
23:43actually I think this could be quite interesting
23:47let's go and find Charlotte
23:49it's certainly a mix of finds in here
23:52you never know what's going to turn up next
23:55oh Charlotte
23:56oh I have found this gorgeous
23:59limber solution print
24:01ah
24:02what do you think of this one?
24:04my granddad found that he really liked it
24:06my nan absolutely hated it
24:09did she?
24:10so he hid it in the toilet
24:12and that's where he displayed it
24:14can I say the toilet was probably a good idea
24:17because it's had no sunlight damage
24:19because these colours are gorgeous
24:20wow
24:21this is by an artist called Peter Max
24:23okay
24:24and it's a limited edition run
24:25so only 99 of 300
24:28oh wow okay
24:29and because the colours of this lithograph
24:31are so bright and so beautiful
24:33and it's got a kind of mix between
24:35Art Nouveau, Edvard Mooker meets kind of pop art
24:39and it's really going to be on vogue right now
24:42from the 1960s Peter Max had lit up pop art
24:46with neon soaked psychedelic visuals
24:48bold colours, swooping lines and cosmic motifs
24:52became his signature
24:54Bea thinks this could fetch 60 to 80 pounds
24:57well I'm delighted that you're seeing the back of it
25:00and I'm going to send it to a new home
25:02lovely thank you
25:03alright
25:04thank you
25:05cheers
25:06keep going Bea
25:08all this searching can hopefully tot up
25:10a tidy sum for the south of France getaway
25:13I'm so shocked at how much stuff they actually had
25:16and like where were these pictures
25:18I've never seen half of them
25:19yeah
25:20where did they keep them
25:21I know
25:22this whole time
25:23it's like the never ending story
25:24this
25:25yeah
25:26amount of stuff
25:27it's full speed ahead
25:28as everyone tries to find as many things as possible for auction
25:33and Saf is on the hunt for more things in need of reviving
25:37oh
25:38trumpets
25:40wonder if it works
25:42maybe not
25:44maybe not
25:45I think you might be missing the mouthpiece Saf
25:47what have you found down here?
25:49some trumpets
25:50I can see that they're pretty cool
25:52very tarnished
25:53they are tarnished but I do like them and I particularly like this bugle
25:59so I mean that's early 20th century
26:021910ish
26:03are these okay being polished up?
26:05definitely
26:06they're still sellable but they're kind of £30
26:08but if you can make them look a bit snazzy
26:11they crack on with it
26:12pressure's on you for that
26:13come on Saf work your wonders
26:16some tender love and care will up the sale price
26:19because a clean and shiny instrument will have more appeal to potential bidders
26:24and they'll look their best for the auction
26:27so the first thing I'm going to do
26:29is have a solution mix of white wine vinegar
26:32and some bicarb of soda
26:35now it is quite strong
26:37quite potent
26:39the acid in the vinegar dissolves the copper oxides and grime
26:43while the fizzy bicarbonate of soda
26:45a great natural alternative to harsh household cleaners
26:49lifts and dislodges the loosened tarnish
26:52now this technique works with all sorts of brass and metal
26:56any tarnished metal
26:58coming up quite nice
26:59it's coming through
27:01and Saf's got a special brush
27:03to help him clean those hard to reach places
27:06now there's quite a bit of tarnish inside there
27:09a bit of dust
27:10from a special snake
27:11I think I'll try and release some of the dirt and tarnish inside first
27:15let's get that through
27:17oh
27:18it is quite mucky
27:19once shiny and looking as good as new again
27:21the bugle and trumpets will be sold as one lot
27:24they could fetch from 60 to 80 pounds at auction
27:28Bea is having one last search downstairs
27:32ah
27:34yes
27:36our good old favourite
27:39a draw
27:41of silver
27:45and I absolutely love these
27:48these are sugar sifters
27:50I mean you need quite a lot of sugar out of that don't you
27:53the origins of the sugar sifter can be traced back to the 18th century
27:57when sugar became more widely available and affordable in Europe
28:02that's a great find and could be worth up to a hundred pounds
28:06but there look to be more shiny things in that drawer Bea
28:10I mean that's beautiful
28:12I wouldn't mind that on my dresser at home
28:14and added to a lot with the other silverware could fetch up to a hundred pounds
28:21great
28:22there's an entire lot
28:24just hidden away in this drawer
28:26outside the wood stain on the new stand for the reproduction suit of armour has dried
28:31meaning that Saf can get stuck into the finishing touches on the armour itself
28:35come up to the final stages
28:38so I'll just try a bit of metal polish
28:41give it a bit of get the dust off
28:43give it a slight sheen
28:45using the metal polish means it can remove the built-up grime and staining
28:49and renew the surface to help give a long-lasting shine
28:52looking good
28:54if you do say so yourself
28:56hey
28:58thought you could do a tea break
29:00oh thank you very much
29:02what do you think

29:54the psychedelic print
29:56the drawer of silver
29:58and not forgetting SAF's bugle and trumpet slot
30:01and now that the plume for the helmet has dried
30:04SAF just has time to secure it back in place
