01:26Saw a lady who worked at the gas station on the phone walking out toward me
01:30As soon as that young lady started walking up I hit record. I knew there was going to be a problem
01:41I don't I'm pretty sure she's in the Cadillac. Yeah, is there anybody else with her?

02:25The tenant over here at the gas station advised
02:28They're smoking drugs in the bathroom now sitting in the car. Can you also contact Edgewood and have them roll me a unit?
02:38I'm thinking drug use this early in the morning in a silver Cadillac silver Cadillac's a little higher-end vehicle
02:44I'm thinking this could be a higher slightly higher-end drug dealer of some kind
02:48But we have no idea what's going on the car. They're innocent until proven guilty
02:58All right, Jason can come
03:18I turn one second Tommy's attempting to flee. He ran my car
03:3410-4 is on that one
03:36I'm like kind of another unit if there's any East unit DCS over there to help him and come through there until he

04:21He is out by pizza barn he is headed eastbound on their frontage of significant damage to my vehicle
04:37Also be advised. I don't have a sirens. I'm gonna be like someone
04:39I was a little surprised he was willing to smash his way out of there to get away
04:51It's gonna be a silver Cadillac female passenger male driver dark tinted windows
04:56He is coming out eastbound triple three now
05:0110-4 eastbound triple three
05:02This is a pretty brazen individual so i've got to stop him
05:17After one traffic light eastbound about 80 miles an hour and no instructions
05:24On the roadway
05:28Wrong side of the roadway back in Los Angeles
05:35I don't want to scare this gentleman into further erratic behavior and so i didn't want to be up on his bumper
05:43Or tapping his vehicle or driving so aggressively myself that i caused more problems than we tried to solve
05:48Oh

06:51The male driver is hell-bent on getting away and opens fire on Lieutenant Vaughn as soon
07:07as he gets out of his car.
07:12Being shot at is terrifying.
07:17The sound was terrifyingly loud, and it got loud and crazy really, really fast.
07:3110-Colb, shot's fired, I'm down.
07:4310-Colb on hit, bleeding, subjects are fleeing, what? Female and a male.
07:49it was all very clear but it was strange it was very real it seemed slow and i was scared
08:06the fear of being shot was constant
08:16we got a gunfire on the overpass the city of hill
08:19501 do you have a weapon description negative but i'm hit please give me a 55.
08:30as lieutenant vaughn waits for a 55 which is police code for an ambulance he is running on
08:37adrenaline but it is clear that his injuries are severe
08:50that's affirmative uh cedillo hill overpass over i-40
09:06501 i think i'm okay i'm bleeding shot through the shoulder possibly the chest
09:20subjects are fleeing westbound a little bit of trouble breathing
09:27i'm able to observe the car good enough for me to decide there's nobody left in the car
09:31so far i was scared because now i have time to think about my injury
09:36and i don't know if i'm shot through the chest
09:40level one i'm just going to sit tight i'm not going to start
09:42so
09:52i'm not going to be able to see you
10:00officer jared mogling from the edgewood police department is nearby and responds
10:06to the chest whenever you hear an officer call for assistance you get that kind of sinking feeling
10:13in your stomach and then all that matters is trying to get to your brother quickly and safely as possible
10:25a civilian who witnessed the shooting is assisting lieutenant vaughn
10:29i've been through two shootings before this
10:40i was afraid and i couldn't articulate why to have him hold my hand that was super helpful
10:45any injuries yes okay you're hitting right in the neck
10:49is it bleeding a lot or yes it's bleeding
10:55409 that was deeply sent in the city of york
11:06all right man you get right in the neck right here everybody give me some pressure on it
11:10man i'm scared as you can see the blood coming out of my neck on the left side just pouring out
11:15right away and that was terrifying
11:29new mexico state police lieutenant jeremy vaughn has just been shot by the driver of a vehicle he was
11:35pursuing all right man he's hit right in the neck right here everybody give me some pressure on it
11:40okay thank you bye
11:44this side
11:45helping this crap off what he's in there he's in he's not bleak
11:50already stopped how do we get this vest off and just understand
11:53hold on hold on the velcro is like this on the other side
12:01i'm thinking do i have a hemo pneumothorax do i have a collapsing loan
12:05i don't know if it came out the back but it feels like it hit my scapula brother
12:22paramedics arrived to treat lieutenant vaughn
12:26what's your name jeremy jeremy you having any problems breathing just that scapula really hurts guys
12:32hurts in the back yeah let's get the journey the situation is critical and lieutenant vaughn is
12:39rushed to the nearest hospital my phone kept ringing my uh personal cell phone kept ringing and at the
12:49time i was helping a colleague with a project and we were intensely working on as one of those it's hard
12:55to i'm not going to just answer the phone unless it's something that's important
13:01my colleague from albuquerque police department she calls again
13:05and i hit ignore again and she sends me a message says pick up your phone
13:11and she says jeremy's been shot
13:21and my brain froze liz took me right to the hospital
13:28since jeremy had been in two shootings already i had some practice
13:34and i just know i have to keep it together and i have to be
13:39brave and i have to figure out where jeremy is and what is going on
13:45and i'm terrified
13:48because i don't know what i'm walking into
13:59after the shooting officers locate the gunman thanks to a tip-off from a local citizen
14:04he is arrested without incident and taken in for questioning
14:12so finally i i take a right i turn he puts me up against the bridge
14:17and uh honestly i i don't i i don't i i don't i right there i don't even remember i just remember
14:25after shots of fire i mean i don't know i just
14:27i can't tell you the shooter is caleb dustin elledge he has a history of drug abuse and firearms charges
14:40i remember walking into the er i sit down in a room and who comes in first
14:54is the chaplain and the social worker that those are not the people who i want to talk to
14:59i say no where is jeremy take me to jeremy now
15:12his carotid artery was nicked by the bullet
15:17the bullet was right next to his spine and broke off pieces of his spine
15:21i've spoken with a number of our nurses and we've seen many many medical professionals
15:29who every single one of them has remarked i don't know how you are alive and i don't know how you
15:36aren't paralyzed
15:40so the bullet entered the left side of my neck in a downward angle and stopped right behind my spine
15:4611 days later at the unm hospital trauma clinic they took the bullet out of my back entered it into
15:55evidence and the trauma from the surgery was hard they cut muscle the bones were fractured and there's
16:04a lot of pain in the back from that
16:09the shooter caleb ellich pleads guilty and is sentenced to nine years in prison
16:15and a further three years supervised release with sentencing on state charges still to come
16:21the female in the car alana martinez is charged with harboring or aiding a felon
16:27she pleads guilty and is sentenced to one year in prison and six months probation
16:33no proof of drug use by either suspect is found
16:37law enforcement are real people with real families who love them
16:49and so i went to jeremy after the third shooting
16:54and i said
16:56has three strikes
16:59has three shootings in almost three years and you almost died
17:03the state of new mexico has had you for 20 years
17:09i want our boys to have a dad i don't want to have you on a wall i want you can we please be done
17:18and he had to think about it
17:21you know victoria is a little bit of a terminator machine she she's a machine she's a federal agent
17:30she's a triathlete she eats nails for breakfast
17:35my wife gave me the look and i couldn't tie my shoes i couldn't drive i was a total mess
17:43and it was smart to take the duty injury leave and then go ahead and retire
18:00and then go ahead and get the job
18:08911. what is the address of the emergency
18:12um apparently on highway five uh at jay street i just heard a big crash and there's smoke over here
18:18your mother. Okay. I heard a loud bang fire house and now I see fire. Officer Kyle Roberts from the
18:31Chula Vista Police Department launches a drone to investigate the source of the fire. The drone
18:37can arrive on scene faster and it can get information back to the officers. Save vital
18:41seconds. The camera that the drones equipped with has a zoom capability as
18:47well as a thermal or infrared capability. I'm using the thermal cameras able to see
18:51a significant heat source. And then switching to the photo camera I can see
18:57that there was something on fire.
19:11Officer Donald Truong is one mile away and responds.
19:25My concern was if someone was in there and was there a family in there. You never know how much
19:34gasoline is left inside a vehicle and once the fire reaches the gasoline tank if there's enough
19:40gasoline it could cause an explosion. The fire could spread into the nearby
19:45neighborhoods. There's no time to waste.
20:00The vehicle was engulfed in flames and I couldn't see any of the doors open.
20:10I could hear someone yelling from the front driver's side.
20:17Come out through the back! Come out through the back! Come out through the back! Come on!
20:24Come out through the back! Come out through the back! Come on!
20:39Come out through the back! Come out through the back! Come out through the back! Come out!
20:51You could feel the flames at first but that's a person, that's someone's family member.
20:56Your adrenaline gets pumping and the feeling of the flames just completely goes away because now you're
21:06overcome with worry for somebody else's life.
21:17Officer Daniel Hernandez and agent Natalie Garnsey arrive on scene to help battle the blade.
21:23At one point I could feel it on my feet. My boots were actually burning.
21:30So when I first got there he was so far into the car we couldn't really get a hold of him.
21:44The back window was very, I guess it was smushed I would say.
21:51And the headrests were in the way so the individual could not like crawl out the back of the window.
21:56He was starting to burn from the waist down.
22:06The fire extinguisher wasn't going to fully extinguish the entire vehicle.
22:15He was buying him a lot more time in order for us to, you know, try to get him out of that vehicle.
22:21There's a lot of chemicals that are coming out of that vehicle that can potentially make the vehicle explode.
22:29I was not able to immediately pull him through because the exit way was too small.
22:50So I told the subject to just reach his hands out the rear window so that way we could try to just force him out by pulling him through.
23:00Hold on. Give me your hand. Give me your hand. Come on. Come on. Give me your hand. Come on. Come on. Come on. Yeah, you're doing good. Come on. Come on. Come on. Come out.
23:11I could tell by his screams that he was in tremendous amount of pain. I can only imagine.
23:16Give it. Come on. Hey, come on. Give me all the hands. Give me all the hands.
23:23We pulled on him for what felt like forever.
23:30I'm thinking we have him. Like, we just need to pull a little bit harder.
23:34Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.
23:39We can't let this guy die. Like, we have to get him out of this vehicle.
23:42Keep going.
23:44Keep going.
23:46Come on. Come on. Come on. Come on.
23:51Keep going. Keep going.
23:56Hold on, man. You're going to be okay. Murder's coming.
23:59Hold on, man.
24:00Hold on, man.
24:01Hold on, man.
24:02Hold on.
24:03Hold on, man.
24:04His clothing was burned, and parts of his skin were essentially, like, rubbed off or burned off, and he was in a lot of pain.
24:14Hold on.
24:15Hold on.
24:16Oh.
24:17Oh.
24:18Oh.
24:19Oh.
24:20Oh.
24:21completely out of the face of danger yet because as we pulled the subject out the vehicle reignited
24:28its self about three to four seconds later the vehicle fully engulfed itself and when it did that
24:53the driver is rushed to a nearby hospital and treated for serious burns but eventually makes a full recovery
25:23i am proud i'm proud of the teamwork and knowing that when one of us goes to a call that's dangerous
25:35that we're all going to show up and essentially save someone's life
25:44three of the responding officers suffer minor burns they later receive bravery awards if we
25:51didn't take him out of that vehicle he would have definitely you know burned to death inside of that
25:57vehicle i'm proud of myself but i'm more proud of my partners for coming with me at a time like that
26:21it's a normal day patrolling i-40
26:33i noticed a vehicle parked on the side of the shoulder of i-40
26:37i was just taught if i see someone stranded i'm just going to be there to help and see if they
26:50need assistance help any way i can

28:27the 109th detective squad was notified of a male unconscious
28:33when we arrived to the scene we did see a male underneath blankets and clothing on a bed
28:39male was was shot once in the head and was deceased the victim is identified as 26 year old
28:48justin lee at the time we did come up the suspect as he young dang who's a female chinese national

29:00the married victim had been having an affair with dang and investigators believe she shot him in a crime of
29:07passion she fled in a honda crv her phone later pinging on the highway in edgewood en route toward the
29:15mexican border when she did attempt to flee to new mexico from new york we knew that the only thing that

32:33with no other units in the area hernandez needs to keep the driver at the location until backup arrives
32:39i'm worried that something might happen that i might have to pull out my gun and shoot it or i might
