00:00Where's the button on this reel?
00:02Do you push and, you know, it winds them up?
00:04Yeah, and last time we went out with the idea
00:06to just go have fun, go explore.
00:08This trip was, we were going to go fill a box.
00:11Ha ha ha!
00:13Free spool.
00:15Oh my gosh, look at that mouth right there.
00:18Ha!
00:19Look at that!
00:21We got a gag.
00:22Is it really?
00:23Oh my gosh, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
00:27I'm just trying to fill a box.
00:29I hope y'all enjoyed seeing Jeff Lang
00:30on his last adventure with Chasin' the Sun TV.
00:40Yeah, look at that!
00:44There he is.
00:45Oh!
00:48Yeah, that's a good one.
00:50Chasin' the Sun is brought to you by
00:54Florida Water Sports.
00:56Get all you need for the water at fws.fish.
00:59Humminbird, simply, clearly, better.
01:05Minn Kota.
01:08And by Pirates Cove Marina.
01:11You enjoy the gulf, we'll take care of the rest.
01:13Well, I think we have just loaded half of Florida Water Sports onto this boat.
01:28Well, about a quarter.
01:30You told me to keep some back in the car.
01:32Last time me and Jeff were together, we were heading offshore and we were going to do a little bit of deep drop grouper fishing.
01:39And, you know, I was hoping we'd try to target a few species that may be open to keep.
01:43But, in all reality, we knew when we were heading out that Red Snapper was closed, Gag Grouper was closed, Scamp, because we were outside 100 foot, was closed.
01:51But, we had some new tackle and I was excited just to go try that out.
01:54Yeah, and last time we went out with the idea to just go have fun, go explore.
01:58This trip was we were going to go fill the marks.
02:00Yeah, totally different.
02:02Good morning, Dennis.
02:04Today's mission, we required bait.
02:06It wasn't like the last time we were going to go play, we needed to have bait today.
02:09And even if we're going to jig doing this, we always want to have bait, because if the jig bite is slow, we want to send some real baits down.
02:16Yep, it's a long run to go out there without any bait.
02:18If we can't make it happen with all them menace, we're in trouble.
02:22Thank you, Dennis.
02:23Good luck, guys.
02:25Have a good day.
02:26You too.
02:27So, I know we had a lofty goal of filling snapper limits, grouper limits, amberjack limits, which means it's a lot of fishing.
02:35Which also means we've got to leave well before daylight.
02:38Especially when you have a long boat ride like this.
02:40You know, we're not going to ride like what we typically do about 8 or 10 miles and stop and fish.
02:45We're going to start at like 60, 70, 80 miles.
02:48Who knows?
02:49We're just going to keep running until we get to the right water.
02:57We're going to start here in about 360 and work our way up to about 600 foot of water.
03:01And what's neat is the fact that I can just hit a button right here and drop a trolling motor in the water.
03:07And then I actually get to fish.
03:08Instead of me sitting here trying to hold the boat up, I'm going to spot lock us right on top of this little show of fish.
03:14We'll see what's down there.
03:17I'm looking forward to it.
03:21You know, I wanted to pick up right where we left off last time, which was you working the jigging rod.
03:26If I can use a jig and catch gags or use live bait and catch snappers, I'm going to go with gags every time.
03:32We've only got 14 days to catch them, so I'm going to take advantage of it.
03:35Me dropping that fathom electric down to the bottom.
03:39Nothing that can explain the excitement of hitting the bottom out there in 400 or 500 feet of water in that first bite of the morning.
03:48I don't know what it is, but he's on there.
03:54He's slowing us down, too.
03:56Didn't look like a lot.
03:58Didn't look like a lot.
04:01What do we got, Jeff?
04:02I'm going to go with a big ol' scam.
04:04I would like that a lot.
04:05That'd be very nice.
04:06I know they tend to not fight a whole lot once you get them off the bottom.
04:09I don't know.
04:10That's the fun part.
04:11No, the fun part is everything's open.
04:13That's true, too.
04:14So as long as he's of legal length, he gets to go home to dinner with us.
04:18You know, this is one of the few times of the year where we could keep red snapper.
04:23We could keep gag grouper.
04:25We could keep the scams.
04:26All those things we had to let go last time, fair game now.
04:34Looks like a red snapper.
04:35Number one.
04:36Looks like a red snapper.
04:39Well, that's quick work right there.
04:43Oh.
04:45Oh, dang, something broke off our other hook.
04:47He got the good one.
04:50Look at that.
04:51I might have had two snappers on and they ran against each other.
04:54Y'all, it's just too easy out here.
04:57I love it.
05:00And we've been throwing these guys back for a while, but not today.
05:06You know, Jeff had a great point earlier.
05:08He was talking about last year when we came out here, we were using the descending device
05:12and safely took these fish right back down to the bottom.
05:15Well, because of those conservation efforts, these guys were still here today.
05:19And now they don't ride back to the bottom.
05:20They ride right to the bottom of the icebox.
05:26And we're on the board.
05:29Where's the button on this reel?
05:30Did you push and, you know, it winds them up?
05:33It didn't even get to the bottom.
05:34Really?
05:35Nope, he didn't fall.
05:36Dang.
05:37Color.
05:38Yeah, there he is.
05:39Gag.
05:40Oh my gosh, it sure is.
05:41Look at that.
05:51You know, Jeff, the difference in this show today is typically we got the chase boat
05:54following us around.
05:55It's all about setting up and getting those perfect shots.
05:58Yep.
05:59Today is about filling a cooler.
06:01Didn't even get to the bottom.
06:02Really?
06:03Nope.
06:04He hit it falling.
06:05Dang.
06:06All right.
06:07This is fun, but just watching right now, that looks more fun.
06:10I'm just glad he hit it before he got to the bottom.
06:13So I don't have the whole 360 feet to go.
06:15So we had another electric reel on the boat ready to go, but you wanted to jig.
06:19I love jigging.
06:20I can't not jig.
06:21So I figured I'll jig while I have the energy and then I'll switch to the electric.
06:25Color.
06:26Yeah, there it is.
06:27Gag.
06:28Oh my gosh, it sure is.
06:29Look at that.
06:31Free spool.
06:32All right.
06:33That's a beautiful gag on a jig.
06:37I'm not going to lie, Jeff, I'm totally jealous.
06:40As soon as I saw that gag come up on your jig rod, I was like, I have a jig rod.
06:45You know, Jeff, we got two completely different presentations here.
06:50We're going to jig.
06:51All right.
06:52I'm going to come up fast and see if I can't get a reaction out of them.
06:57And then dropping that fathom electric down to the bottom.
07:00One of the nice things with electric reels is we're really going to maximize our bottom time.
07:04We have three hooks on our rig and three hook gears and electric reels is a great way to do that.
07:11There we go.
07:12All right.
07:13Now you're on.
07:14I just came off.
07:19Yep.
07:20There we go.
07:23That's had to get going fast.
07:26Where's the button on this reel that you push and, you know, it winds them up?
07:30That's an old school manual one.
07:34Jigging is just like having kids.
07:36And I know it makes no sense, but hear me out, okay?
07:39It's so much fun, but it's a ton of work.
07:42And he's still digging, so I have a feeling we're dealing with the old red snapper.
07:46It takes a little break after each session to forget about how much work it was.
07:53What is it?
07:54He's floating now.
07:55I like that.
07:56I got colors.
07:57Might be a gag.
07:58And then once you heal up and you forget about all that hard work, you're like, oh, I remember it being fun.
08:03Let's do it again.
08:04Or big ol' skimp.
08:05No, it's a snapper.
08:06Big ol' snapper.
08:07Oh, barely hooked, too.
08:08Look at that.
08:09There we go.
08:10Thing's just gonna fall right out.
08:11Nice.
08:12See, they suck you into going again.
08:13Now that was fun.
08:14I'm like, I think I'll drop the jig back down.
08:15I'm gonna cast that out a little this time.
08:16You know, the beauty of your, like, conventional deep dropping rigs that we use on these electric
08:33reels is the fact that it doesn't get tangled up going down and you have multiple hooks.
08:37So if you miss your bite, you don't have to reel all the way back up.
08:40Oh, no, there's something.
08:41Yeah, I think there's a small one on here.
08:44I don't know.
08:45I'm just not used to this stiffer, shorter rod.
08:48Got about 140 feet coming up still.
08:50Looks to be a little bit smaller of a fish.
08:52Not quite as big as what Justin was getting, but.
08:54You know, one of the most fun parts about fishing like this is when you get hooked up,
08:59you never know what it's gonna be.
09:01Big ol' porgy.
09:02There you go, Justin.
09:04It's like we're back in shore again.
09:06Oh my gosh, look at that.
09:07He's going in the box.
09:09And you may hear this locally called white snapper, but it really is a porgy.
09:13And when you see these porgies this size, I get pretty excited about that because it's an amazing eating fish.
09:19And you know what, Jeff?
09:20I think the only reason people aren't more excited about them, because typically they're not this big.
09:24When they get that size, it almost looks like a red snapper.
09:27But if we can catch them like this, we'll keep doing.
09:30Into the slush.
09:32Yeah, it's usually about halfway down with these jigs where you go.
09:37That's a long ways.
09:38The idea of having something really big attached to it at the same time.
09:42It's kind of scary.
09:44You talk about a great time of the year to be on the water.
09:47I mean, when we get this late summer, early fall, September basically, you call it what you want.
09:52For us, it feels more like a late summer month.
09:55You get some of the prettiest weather of the year.
09:57And the fishing just keeps getting better day by day.
09:59I like that I can look back at Justin and he can just look at that rod tip and know exactly what's on here.
10:05Yeah.
10:06Just by the way, it's not fighting.
10:08He saw it bounce a few times and give up, which means we both think it's probably going to be another scant grouper.
10:13Jeff catches something good on the jig and it makes me want to do it.
10:16And then I don't get a bite.
10:18I'm putting this thing up.
10:20I may be in you somehow.
10:22Yeah, I am.
10:23I'm coming up with you.
10:24No wonder I can't catch anything on my jig.
10:26It's a nice scamp though.
10:27Let's get him first.
10:29And then we'll figure out where the jig is at.
10:31All right.
10:33So I have a feeling while you were fishing for that scamp, somehow I kept jigging and jigging until eventually my jig made it all the way down to your line and tangled up in it.
10:42But hey, you know what?
10:43We got the fishing, so that's all that matters.
10:45Double up.
10:46Oh, you got one too?
10:47Yep.
10:48It's another giant snapper.
10:49Bigger than the first one.
10:50Holy cow.
10:51Look at that snapper.
10:52That's what you make that boat ride for right there, y'all.
10:58Uh-oh.
10:59Uh-oh.
11:00Uh-oh.
11:01Come on.
11:02Come on.
11:03I know I've said this before, but you cannot describe the fun of catching stuff on electric
11:19reels until you come do it.
11:21You really can't have two different styles of fishing for what we're in 400 foot of water.
11:26Good, thin, super strong braided line makes this possible and also makes the jigging like
11:31Jeff's doing possible.
11:32And I tell you, they're both so much fun and I enjoy jigging as much as I do this.
11:36The only difference is instead of dropping down and reeling up, when I saw the rod tip starting to bend on here, I just do this.
11:43All right.
11:44I'm on my mono.
11:45Doubled up.
11:46Oh, did you go one too?
11:47Yep.
11:48It's another giant snapper.
11:49Bigger than the first one.
11:50Holy cow.
11:51Look at that snapper.
11:52That's what you make that boat ride for right there, y'all.
11:56Look at that red snapper.
11:57I told y'all today's going to be a grocery run.
12:00Look, we got this all sloshed up right now.
12:02You take that dude and just...
12:04Oh, yeah.
12:05Oh, yeah.
12:06Oh, yeah.
12:07Oh, yeah.
12:08Oh, yeah.
12:09Oh, yeah.
12:10Oh, yeah.
12:11You take that dude and just let him work his way into that salt brine.
12:16That's going to be some good fish.
12:20I don't know what it is, but...
12:21It's a snapper.
12:22Oh, it is a snapper.
12:23Look at that.
12:24If you grab that mean part of the jig, you're pretty safe on it.
12:26Yeah, I know.
12:27I was scared of that.
12:28There you go.
12:29That's one nice thing about these jigs.
12:30They make a great handle.
12:32I don't know if there's any finer meat in the world.
12:39You're trying to one up your PB gag last trip, huh?
12:42Yes, sir.
12:43That might be him.
12:45Could be him.
12:48Now, that one really kicked my butt last year.
12:50This one, I'm at least making headway on.
12:53So, last year, we came out here and first dropped down on this bigger jig.
12:58I got absolutely worked.
13:00And I had a big old 30-inch, probably 35-pound gag on here.
13:04That was my personal best gag grouper.
13:06That's a copper belly right there, baby.
13:09I don't know how the guys do it in six, 800, 1,000 foot of water.
13:13I give them mad credit.
13:15We got color.
13:17We got a gag.
13:19Is it really?
13:20Yep.
13:21Oh, my gosh.
13:22Hold on.
13:23Hold on.
13:24Hold on.
13:25Hold on.
13:26Hold on.
13:27That was a little risky pull there, but you got him.
13:29He was floating.
13:30That's true.
13:31That's a big gag.
13:32Here we go.
13:33See if I can get him off of the jig for you.
13:36Look at that hook.
13:37Perfect.
13:38Right around.
13:39When it gets around that jawbone like that, it ain't coming loose.
13:41One of the main reasons for this trip is we had to take advantage of the good weather in our tight grouper season this year.
13:46Well, he's not quite as big as your PB last year, but that's a fine gag grouper, and he's going to make a lot of mouths happy.
13:54Tell you what.
13:55While we have that up and this up and everything up, let's go and check one of these other places.
13:58All right.
14:01You have to always be on the look for somewhere new.
14:03So if you find some fish, great.
14:05You make notes of that for next trip.
14:07So this is the Daiwa Tanacom.
14:09To me, it's just a little more handheld.
14:10I still get to hold the rod.
14:11I can feel the bite.
14:12I can still feel like I'm fighting the fish.
14:14I'm going to rig it up so that I can join in an electric fund with Justin and capitalize on this little bite we've got going today.
14:20We about to hook up.
14:22All right.
14:23I just hit the bottom.
14:24You know, Jeff, when I'm fishing that electric reel, what I'm mainly doing is watching the rod tip, and I do put my hand on the line.
14:31I ain't got bit yet.
14:33Come on.
14:34It's very responsive to what's happening, even if it's four or 500 feet away.
14:37It's hard to describe.
14:38You just have to get out there, feel the bite.
14:40Every bite's going to be a little different, and then make that decision when they put it in gear.
14:44Oh, there goes the bite.
14:45There goes the bite.
14:46Oh, yeah.
14:47Oh, yeah.
14:48And we're on.
14:49And it's a big fish.
14:55There's a fish on there.
14:56What do we got?
14:57Uh-oh.
14:58It's all yellow mouth.
15:00Yeah.
15:01Yep.
15:02There we go.
15:03Scamp number one.
15:04What a beautiful fish.
15:05The scamp is the filet mignon of the Gulf.
15:09It is the best eaten.
15:10See how the tails come to a point?
15:12The gags don't have that.
15:13They have a little different pattern on their side, too, but you also always tell they got a yellow mouth right here and really green eyes.
15:24One of the nice things with these electric reels is we're not tired anymore.
15:29I'll tell you what, if I didn't have this thing right here, I would not come out here and do this.
15:34No chance.
15:38There he is.
15:39There you go.
15:40Get him.
15:41Get him.
15:42Oh, yeah.
15:43It's not fighting very hard, which is good news, but.
15:46Yeah.
15:47Like it or hate it, the technology is here to stay.
15:50It still keeps the playing field deep.
15:52You can just swing them over here, Jeff.
15:54Porgy.
15:55Oh, it is.
15:56Look at that porgy.
15:57Golly.
15:58Hey, I am not upset about these.
16:00Whether it's adults or children, you name it.
16:03Everybody's going to have more fun in the outdoors.
16:06The humble porgy.
16:09You know, the funny thing is, in a lot of parts of the world, that fish right there, they'd rather eat that than about anything.
16:14They're fabulous.
16:15Yeah, that is the target species in a lot of parts of the world.
16:17Yeah, they're fabulous food.
16:18We're just so daggum spoiled here.
16:20If we can do that, where everybody's respecting the environment, proper conservation, and enjoying the outdoors, what are you losing?
16:28I'm so happy.
16:29Okay.
16:30Let's get it down for the nation.
16:32All right.
16:33Look at that.
16:34Bye.
16:35See.
16:36We'll be back.
16:37Thanks again.
16:38All right.
16:39Bye.
16:40Bye.
16:41Bye.
16:42Bye.
16:43Bye.
16:44Bye.
16:45Bye.
16:46Bye.
16:47Bye.
16:48Bye.
16:50Bye.
16:51Bye.
16:52Bye.
16:53Bye.
16:54Bye.
16:55Bye.
16:56Bye.
16:57it. We're here at the Public Sports Park. We've been open for five years and we've been
17:07hosting events ever since. We've hosted over 400 events here at the Sports Park and we
17:12bring in about 180,000, 200,000 visitors per year and we're doing a major expansion. We're
17:19adding turf where our grass fields were so we can add capacity and do more events. The
17:25turf, the AstroTurf, you can play all day long every day. It's got the Z-Cap which
17:32is a special volcanic rock they put on it that acts like water. It cools it down
17:37and we've been able to you know host events all year long. With the turf you
17:42know it's open for tournaments every weekend. So yeah here at Public Sports
17:47Park you know we host a variety of events in all different sports. It's multi-purpose.
17:51We do over 60 events a year and we have practices almost every day. So if you
17:57want to come check us out we'd love to have you come see the Public Sports Park.
18:00We actually ran over a couple of spots on the way out here. So now we're gonna run
18:09back inshore a little bit back to about 250 feet of water. We'll start working our
18:14way home and try to finish out a box on the way back. During the summertime which
18:18y'all know here in the Florida Panhandle is like the busiest time of year you get
18:22like a continuous season. There we go. All right now he's on. During the fall really all the way
18:29into the winter you get these weekends. I feel like a red snapper to me. And some
18:35holidays where you can still go catch and keep these red snappers all the way
18:39through the end of the year. Red snapper. Oh big snapper look at that dude. Here swing him over here
18:45to me. He's barely hooked. Barely hooked. There we go. We got him. And lucky him we got room for a
18:54couple more in here. Well this is no crazy super expensive technology. This is
19:01something that anybody can buy anybody can use and it shortens that learning curve.
19:05This is why I like my little short rod. It's easy to grab my line and pull over to it. Uh oh. See Jeff's got
19:10another big fish on again. Dang it. We got about 150 feet. All right. Well I'm going to see what this is.
19:15All right. So I got a porgy here. Now that's a normal size porgy. This is what we're used to
19:21catching back in shallower. Those guys like that. That's pretty normal. It's another big gag.
19:27Look at that. Free spool. Oh my gosh. Look at that mouth right there.
19:34All right. Last time we came we had to let pretty much everything go. You know you're not supposed
19:42to make the host look this bad. We come back when the season's open this year and we went straight
19:47wild on them. I'm just trying to fill a box. I hope y'all enjoyed seeing Jeff Lang on his last
19:52adventure with the Jason the Sun TV. After we caught ours the camera guys got behind the rod and they got
19:59to catch some fish. There we go. I mean we got porgies as big as that one but you know what?
20:04Uh oh. He's got a real one on him. And so when everybody gets to catch them like that you know
20:08it's a fun day. That's a little better. Another snapper. What do you think about that? Look at that.
20:15I don't know if there's room for even a cigar minnow in that front box.
20:18Boxes full. We are done. Headed home.
