00:00:00Now ladies and gentlemen, let's have a welcome from Patrick Kielty.
00:00:30Good evening folks, welcome to The Late Late Show, where once again we are live from Dublin
00:00:49with another knock-up line-out, as tonight we are joined by double Olympic gold medalist
00:00:55Kelly Harrington is here. I'm just hearing there is a trader amongst us, star of How to Train
00:01:05Your Dragon and Celebrity Traders, Ruth Codd is also in the building. The stars of the brilliant
00:01:13NRG drama, The Sacred Vies, will be joining us. So, so good, Michelle. From Netflix number
00:01:23one show, Runaway I Am Smiling Already, Jimmy Nesbitt is going to be here. I like that. And
00:01:33not that this lot need to get going, but also bringing the party this evening, the tumbling
00:01:38paddies are in the house!
00:01:40CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:01:46But before all that, my first guest is Ireland's favourite bishop, who just celebrated 25 years
00:01:52in comedy by completing a sell-out arena tour and releasing his latest stand-up show live
00:01:57from Dublin. If that wasn't enough, his life has now been made into a Hollywood movie directed
00:02:04by Bradley Cooper, proving that some bishops can actually perform miracles. Would you please
00:02:10welcome John Bishop!
00:02:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:02:14CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:02:18CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:02:21I mean, wherever you want, John, wherever you want, you can sit there. I'll lie down.
00:02:31You can lie here. Great to finally have you on. We've been trying to get you on for so long.
00:02:36You are the busiest man in the world. And now you are on top...
00:02:40I'm not. Donald Trump is the busiest man in the world.
00:02:44Busy doing nothing, John. You're busy doing something. And you are top of the world with this.
00:02:49When you say someone's got a new movie out, you kind of think, tell us the small part you're going to be in it.
00:02:55But this is actually a movie about John Bishop's life. You're up there now with Elvis and Muhammad Ali.
00:03:01This is the John Bishop biopic. How cool is this?
00:03:04Yeah, I'm up there with two dead people. Thanks.
00:03:07LAUGHTER
00:03:08It's funny, actually, because that was one of the things that, when we were talking about doing it,
00:03:13and I met with the studio and they were talking about how we do all this promotion and stuff.
00:03:18And I said to him, obviously, you've done all this before, films about other people.
00:03:22And they said, no one who's alive, no.
00:03:24And it is mad. It is mad. It's a film based on how I got into comedy.
00:03:29Which was basically by accident.
00:03:31Completely by accident. I ended up...
00:03:33I ended up being in a comedy club in Manchester, because I didn't want to pay to get in.
00:03:39I ended up having to do some jokes, and that just led to this life.
00:03:43OK, talk to us about the point of your life that you were going through whenever this stand-up opportunity came around.
00:03:50So, I was married. I got married to Melanie, and we were living in Manchester.
00:03:57We had kids, three kids, all born close together, because I'm a good shot.
00:04:02LAUGHTER
00:04:04And, obviously, I'm from Liverpool, she's from Manchester, so they're a mixed race.
00:04:08LAUGHTER
00:04:10That's a good gag, isn't it?
00:04:11I mean, it's a good gag.
00:04:12So, anyway, we had three kids, and we were just like anyone else.
00:04:17Something just happened, and it's very much revealed in this film,
00:04:22where the way the film begins, you know, the couple break up,
00:04:26but there's no big argument, there's no affair.
00:04:28Sometimes, that's the way it ends.
00:04:30It just dissolves sometimes, doesn't it?
00:04:32You don't know what happened, and you don't know why.
00:04:35And so, I ended up, you know, every Monday, I'd be on my own,
00:04:39I'd have the kids for the weekend, and I hated Mondays.
00:04:42So, I was in Manchester one Monday night, looking for something to do,
00:04:46went past the Frog and Bucket Comedy Club,
00:04:48and I'd only ever been to two comedy clubs in my whole life,
00:04:50and I thought, oh, go in, and someone will make me laugh,
00:04:54and I'll stop feeling lonely.
00:04:56And so, I got to the door, and the guy in the door said,
00:04:59it's £4 to get in, unless you put your name down.
00:05:02And I said, put my name down for what?
00:05:03He said, an open mic night.
00:05:05I didn't even know what that means.
00:05:06He said, that means that if your name gets called out,
00:05:09you go on stage, but it also means you don't have to pay £4.
00:05:12Amen.
00:05:13Well, I was getting divorced, so I thought, well, that's four quid,
00:05:15she's not getting.
00:05:17So, put my name down, go in, get called out, go on stage,
00:05:21and then this whole new life opened for me.
00:05:24But, Melanie, your wife didn't know that you were,
00:05:28that you'd got this new life.
00:05:29No.
00:05:30And then there's a gig that happens where she just randomly,
00:05:34Yeah.
00:05:35This is so good.
00:05:36I mean, what happened was, I started doing it,
00:05:39and because it was like, I don't know,
00:05:41it was just giving me a way to talk about what I was going through
00:05:43without anyone knowing, so I didn't tell any of me mates,
00:05:46didn't tell anybody.
00:05:47And then, and then I got a phone call from this comedy club,
00:05:52The Frog and Bucket.
00:05:53One day, someone had dropped out and said,
00:05:54will you come and fill in?
00:05:56And I didn't have the kids, so I went, yeah.
00:05:58So I turned up.
00:05:59Now, at this point, we'd been apart nearly two years.
00:06:02And I used to go on stage and to let all the ladies in the room
00:06:06know I was a single man.
00:06:08I used to go on and go, eh, I'm a bit sad tonight, ladies and gentlemen,
00:06:11because me and my wife are no longer together.
00:06:14Aw.
00:06:15It's not that bad, honestly.
00:06:16We're not divorced or anything.
00:06:17I've just killed her.
00:06:19But I knew I was going to miss it, so I've kept her head in the fridge.
00:06:22That's right.
00:06:23Not the best joke in the world, admittedly.
00:06:26OK.
00:06:27But I walked on stage, I said that joke, I looked to the left,
00:06:30and the head that was meant to be in the fridge
00:06:34was sat in the audience.
00:06:36And what had happened...
00:06:37She randomly turned up?
00:06:38No.
00:06:39So what had happened, she got a...
00:06:40When you split up with somebody, you end up with parallel lives.
00:06:44So it's like railway lines.
00:06:45You joined, but you're not connected.
00:06:47So I didn't know really what was happening with her.
00:06:50She got a new job.
00:06:51Someone she worked with, it was the birthday,
00:06:53they said, let's go to a comedy club.
00:06:55She doesn't know I do stand-up comedy.
00:06:57They don't even know my name, who she's with.
00:07:00So when my name gets called out, they can't understand why she goes,
00:07:03WHAT THE HAPPY?!
00:07:05And then I come on, tell a load of jokes about killing her
00:07:08and keeping her head in the fridge in front of a room full of strangers.
00:07:11And then afterwards...
00:07:13I remember seeing her.
00:07:15I remember, because we were at the final stages of the divorce,
00:07:17and I remember seeing her and thinking,
00:07:19Jesus, that's going to cost me another ten grand.
00:07:22And then at the end...
00:07:24And it's very much reminiscent of what happens in the film.
00:07:27She came over to me at the end,
00:07:30and I thought we were going to have an argument,
00:07:32because we really didn't talk a lot at that point.
00:07:34We just...
00:07:35All the arrangements were made with the kids.
00:07:37We didn't have to talk a lot.
00:07:39And she just came over to me and she said...
00:07:41And I was expecting a round.
00:07:43She said, that was a surprise.
00:07:45I said, yeah, you mean the stand-up?
00:07:47She said, no, you know, you were funny.
00:07:50She said, I've not seen you like that since I don't know when.
00:07:54She said, you remind me of the man that I met,
00:07:57that little glaze in your eye in the spring of your step.
00:08:00She said, whatever happened to you?
00:08:02I said, I married you.
00:08:03So she said, can we do something about it?
00:08:07And we did.
00:08:08We ended up going to relate and counselling
00:08:12and just found our way back to each other.
00:08:14And that's the genesis of this film.
00:08:16I mean, it's such a good story.
00:08:18It's such a good story.
00:08:23So cut to Will Arnett and somebody called Bradley...
00:08:27What's his name?
00:08:28Tommy...
00:08:29Tommy Cooper.
00:08:30Bradley Cooper.
00:08:31Bradley Cooper.
00:08:32So Bradley Cooper is now directing this movie.
00:08:35They've taken your life as inspiration.
00:08:36They have set this in New York.
00:08:38Yeah.
00:08:39But pretty much everything that's happened
00:08:41in the moments in the relationship
00:08:43are based on what happened.
00:08:45It's so, so good.
00:08:47This is a little clip.
00:08:50I've been doing stand-up.
00:08:51Is it like a hobby?
00:08:52Well, I'm not about to quit my job and go on tour.
00:08:55It's just that something I look forward to.
00:08:57Hey, listen, do you mind if I dropped him off here
00:08:58for a couple of hours?
00:08:59Don't ambush me like this in front of the boys.
00:09:01You suck.
00:09:02You suck.
00:09:03You suck.
00:09:04Give it up for me.
00:09:05I'm doing great.
00:09:06I'm paying rent on a shitty apartment
00:09:07and mortgage for a house that I don't even live in anymore.
00:09:10So I'm the only one who doesn't know about this.
00:09:11I was thinking about this during the week.
00:09:12So you're one of the biggest stand-ups that we have on this side of the pond.
00:09:25Will, Arnett, know who you were.
00:09:28Because if somebody's pitched a movie where they're playing a bishop with two kids that are separated from their partner,
00:09:32that doesn't narrow it down in Ireland.
00:09:35No.
00:09:36So what happened, to be honest, is I met Will Arnett in Amsterdam on a barge, which is the start of all stories.
00:09:45Eight years ago, someone introduced me and said, tell him that story.
00:09:48And that story I just told you is a story I told when I was on my last tour.
00:09:52It's the only way I can tell the story of what happened, because it's the truth.
00:09:56And he just went, man, that would make a great film.
00:09:58Can I have a go at writing it with his writing partner, Mark Chappell?
00:10:01So they started writing it.
00:10:03Well, they started writing it, and I was writing it with them.
00:10:06I know.
00:10:07So they'd send the script, and then I'd send notes on the script, and I'd send my bits of the script in.
00:10:12And then they'd send me a new version of the script back, and I had none of my bits in it.
00:10:17And I'd go, well, you must have missed the email.
00:10:19I'll send my bits back.
00:10:21And then in the end, I went, it's better that you do it.
00:10:24You write it.
00:10:25I'll sort of oversee the sort of story side and contribute where I can.
00:10:29But you write it, and then a few years ago, Bradley Cooper was on a plane with Will Arnett.
00:10:35Bradley says, what are you working on?
00:10:37Will tells him.
00:10:38He said, can I read it?
00:10:39And then he goes, can I direct it?
00:10:41And he also stars in this as well.
00:10:43Well, the thing about it, he stars as a character called Balls.
00:10:47That wasn't my picking.
00:10:48But he plays the best friend of Will Arnett, which is effectively my best friend,
00:10:53which means all of my fat Balls mates.
00:10:56And I'll go around going, Bradley Cooper's me in a film.
00:11:02And then, so Bradley turns up at the screening at the London Film Festival.
00:11:07Who was more excited, you seeing yourself up on the big screen,
00:11:10or Melanie actually meeting Bradley Cooper?
00:11:14Well, to be honest with you, for us as a couple, you can imagine.
00:11:18Because that was one of those, that period in our life could have gone so many different ways.
00:11:22So there's been a lot of emotions with this.
00:11:25And also we put a lot of trust in them to make it.
00:11:29And so when we had the first big screening, Melanie said, look, I really want five minutes with Bradley Cooper on my own.
00:11:40So what for? She said, I just want five minutes with him.
00:11:43So she pulled him to one side and she said, look, Bradley, I didn't know what this would be.
00:11:47But this is the film that I always dreamed it could be.
00:11:51And I'm just glad that you, she summed it up. She said, you took something precious and you've handed it back to me.
00:11:58Because it's not just your story. It's her story as well.
00:12:00Yeah. Well, there's a scene in the film where we have to do this intimate thing of taking head lice, checking each other for head lice.
00:12:10And that really happened.
00:12:12And what happened, Laura Dern got cast.
00:12:15And then Laura reached out to Melanie and said, can I meet you and get your side of the story?
00:12:19And so she's put so much into it that reflects what goes on.
00:12:23So it feels, it feels our film.
00:12:26I've got to tell you this though, because we had a big thing in London on Monday.
00:12:30And then, and then we had a big dinner with it, with the cast.
00:12:33And so there was Bradley there and Will Arnett there and Karen Hines there and Andrea there and Laura there.
00:12:38Karen Hines is so good.
00:12:39Oh, fantastic. That was my dad. Brilliant.
00:12:41And so we had this big dinner and then, and then we go back to the hotel.
00:12:46It was like the last time we all think we'll be in the same room together and we were back to the hotel, have a drink.
00:12:51And then, and then the next morning we all got together again to do some press.
00:12:55And as I walked into the room with Melanie, Bradley goes, I was, I was last night.
00:13:00How did you feel about the screen and I was last night? And I said, Brad, it was lovely.
00:13:04I said, you know, for me, I said, I've got to tell you that if somebody makes a Hollywood film about your life that expresses how much you really love your wife,
00:13:13even though at that time in your life, you weren't able to find the language to express it to her.
00:13:18I said, and then they put it on a big screen and you see it. I said, it's not half an aphrodisiac.
00:13:24I love that you brought the kids to, to the premiere as well. I mean, what did, what did they make of seeing their mom and dad's story up there?
00:13:44It's strange because they were little, they were five, three and one when it happened.
00:13:48There they are. Oh God, see that picture. Let me tell you that picture.
00:13:51Because what happened, we were going to this London premiere and that's not what we do.
00:13:56You know what I mean? So as we were getting out the car, the kids were saying, Dad, do not look like a competition winner.
00:14:02Do not be, the thing that you've got to do is not smile. That's the cool thing to do.
00:14:07So look at us. It's a, it's a fantastic picture.
00:14:10Was this before, was this before they posted on Instagram that you guys were all about Bran Bishop?
00:14:15Yeah, exactly. Yeah, yeah. Now one of me lads feels that I've ruined his life.
00:14:21So look, you, you just finished the stand-up tour. You recorded the special here in Dublin.
00:14:26Yeah. And normally people, you know, stand-ups, they put their feet up. You're, you're going back out again.
00:14:33I know because the, the, the last tour I did was 25 years and in many respects it was a bit of a great assist.
00:14:39It was also my opportunity to tell that story in line with the film.
00:14:44Erm, and it's also, it's for a two paddy. You know what I mean?
00:14:48It's like this thing, this thing, stand-up comedy. I owe so much to it because it got me family back.
00:14:56If this hadn't have happened, being on a stage making strangers laugh, I wouldn't, we may not have found each other again.
00:15:03So I feel in some respects, I owe it. I love it.
00:15:07Look, it is such a good story. It is such a good movie. It is fantastic to have you sitting in this chair.
00:15:12Er, give it up for Mr. John Bishop.
00:15:15Thank you. Thank you very much.
00:15:19The good news is John is staying with us. Is this thing on? We'll be in cinemas from January the 30th.
00:15:27OK, time for this week's competition. For your chance to win, here's Blondin with all the details. Roll it there, Theresa.

00:17:01Good luck.
00:17:03My next guest is a Wexford-born actress who in just three short years has gone from making her own TikTok videos starring in The Midnight Club, The Fall of the House of Usher and How to Train Your Dragon.
00:17:14And yet, despite her stellar success, she still ended up being murdered by Alan Carr, Jonathan Ross and Kat Burns.
00:17:21What were they thinking on Celebrity Traders?
00:17:23I am delighted to say we've managed to bring her back to life tonight to tell us all about it and more.
00:17:28Would you please welcome Ruth Coyle!
00:17:31Welcome to the show, Ruth. The Midnight Club, How to Train Your Dragon, Now Celebrity Traders.
00:17:57It has been a wild couple of months for you.
00:18:00Yeah.
00:18:01Yeah.
00:18:02Yeah.
00:18:03And I got my legs chopped off on top of all that, you know.
00:18:05I know.
00:18:06I know.
00:18:07You did.
00:18:08The whole thing has just been a crazy period in your life.
00:18:12We're obviously going to talk about what has happened to you and your recovery and all of those things.
00:18:18Before we get into that, let's talk a bit about The Traders because that was just...
00:18:24How good was Ruth on The Traders?
00:18:26That was Jess.
00:18:27My wife, my wife, when she found out I was on with you, said you've got to say hello to it.
00:18:36My wife loved it on it.
00:18:37Really?
00:18:38Yeah, yeah.
00:18:39She was obsessed with it.
00:18:40Why wasn't she in my Instagram comments?
00:18:42I mean, so what was it like to do something like that?
00:18:45It gets pre-recorded, it's done and then it starts to go out and does your life change?
00:18:51It's weird because you do it and you're like, it's kind of all consuming and then you kind of just move on and then forget about it.
00:18:59And then when it started coming out again, I was like, oh yeah.
00:19:01Yeah, that happens.
00:19:02Yeah.
00:19:03Yeah.
00:19:04That whole round table thing, that happened.
00:19:06Yeah.
00:19:07What made you want to do it?
00:19:09I think I'd watched the show and I thought it was such a cool concept and I'm not going to lie, I did think the celebrity version would be a bit softer.
00:19:20Okay.
00:19:21Kind of like Celeb Bake Off.
00:19:22Yeah.
00:19:23You'd kind of go in and no one would take it that seriously.
00:19:26Didn't really work out that way.
00:19:27No.
00:19:28No.
00:19:29Then I started taking it seriously.
00:19:30Well, I mean, this was brilliant, the fact that you started taking it seriously.
00:19:32That's why we loved you.
00:19:33We've got a little clip here.
00:19:35This is you and a little thing with Jonathan Ross.
00:19:40Oh, Jesus.
00:19:41One of the first things you did was make an alliance with Nico and me and Claire in the car.
00:19:49You said it in the car.
00:19:50Did he?
00:19:51Yeah.
00:19:52What did I say?
00:19:53Yeah, you said we're an alliance.
00:19:54I did not say we're an alliance.
00:19:55Yes, you did.
00:19:56We're an alliance?
00:19:57Yes, you did.
00:19:58Guys, I swear, I have not said the words.
00:20:00You did.
00:20:01No.
00:20:02Okay.
00:20:03I'm not going to say, I'm saying you've misremembered.
00:20:04I have not said to anyone, I'm an alliance.
00:20:06He lied point blank about the whole alliance thing.
00:20:09Don't piss in my ear and tell me it's raining.
00:20:12Like, I know what I heard.
00:20:22I love the story about what you thought you said and where that was from.
00:20:25That little phrase.
00:20:26Yeah.
00:20:27Me and my babysitter, Detty, we used to watch a lot of Judge Judy together.
00:20:32I thought it was, don't piss in my ear and tell me it's raining.
00:20:37That's where I obviously had heard it from.
00:20:39You thought that was a Judge Judy quote?
00:20:40Yeah.
00:20:41Yeah.
00:20:42And I thought everyone knew that.
00:20:44Turns out it's, don't piss down my leg and tell me it's raining.
00:20:48Okay.
00:20:49Yeah.
00:20:50And did you think that Jonathan was pissing in your ear?
00:20:52Because there was...
00:20:53Absolutely he was piss in my ear, yeah, yeah.
00:20:56Because there was a whole thing in the press that you guys, you know, weren't getting on off camera as well.
00:21:00Was that just, like, nonsense?
00:21:01No.
00:21:02Okay.
00:21:03That's not, no.
00:21:04I mean, like, we're probably not on each other's Christmas cards lists or anything.
00:21:07But, you know, there's no beef there or anything.
00:21:10Nah, it was just a game.
00:21:11Yeah.
00:21:12I mean, Melanie loved watching it.
00:21:13Would you, I mean, obviously you're a man so successful you probably live in a castle already, John.
00:21:18Yeah.
00:21:19Would you think about this?
00:21:20We filmed it in his house.
00:21:21She actually said to me, you should go on that, you're good at lying.
00:21:26I mean, that's not a good thing to say.
00:21:28You said, I'm not going to go, but I'm going to send Will Arnett to play me.
00:21:33It's, you mentioned it at the start there, it's, you know, off screen, it's been a rough few months for you as well.
00:21:41You had another major surgery in November.
00:21:44Yeah.
00:21:45How is your recovery working out?
00:21:47Oh, well, you know, I walked, I walked on there tonight.
00:21:51Erm, Mike.
00:21:59My physio Geoffrey now, he's going to kill me.
00:22:02These are not ASX runners.
00:22:04The arch supporting these are not good.
00:22:07So this is your second amputation.
00:22:09Yeah.
00:22:10The first one happened as a result, this is a crazy story, as a result of a football injury when you were at school.
00:22:16Yeah.
00:22:17I didn't even play football.
00:22:18I was just kicking around a ball with my friends.
00:22:20And what happened?
00:22:21I just fell.
00:22:22It was just a bad break.
00:22:24It didn't heal properly.
00:22:26And I think there was a couple of things that went wrong with treating it initially and just kind of spiralled.
00:22:33Yeah.
00:22:34And so from that you had a number of operations and then...
00:22:38I think 11.
00:22:39Yeah.
00:22:4010.
00:22:4110.
00:22:4211 was the big one.
00:22:43And so the 11th one, that was the amputation of the first leg.
00:22:47Yeah.
00:22:48Um, how, how do you put your head in a place when you have the second amputation?
00:22:58Yeah.
00:22:59Um, to keep moving in a positive way with this?
00:23:03Well, like you could do, I could have done without it.
00:23:07Like, you know what I mean?
00:23:08But it was the same situation as the first, you know, a lot of times people say to me,
00:23:15Oh, well you chose it, it was your choice because it was an elective amputation.
00:23:19But I'm like, surgeons just don't go chopping off limbs, you know, willy nilly.
00:23:24It's, it's, it was the only way for my quality of life to improve.
00:23:29And I'm not willing to spend my entire life, you know, in a hospital bed for the sake of keeping a leg that doesn't work.
00:23:40Um, so that's, you know, it's a, it, it was a hard decision.
00:23:48It didn't, you know, but I had to do it.
00:23:52And then you, you get used to your new normal.
00:23:57I'm not going to say that my life is, you know, the same.
00:24:00It's, it's different, but in a, a good way, I think.
00:24:04Yeah.
00:24:05Cause recently you've been learning to walk again.
00:24:07Yeah.
00:24:08Um, you're back horse riding.
00:24:10Yeah.
00:24:11Uh, we've got a little clip.
00:24:13This is, was this you this week?
00:24:15I believe.
00:24:19Where's this at?
00:24:20This is, it's a riding school in Bray and the NRH.
00:24:26So my physio at the NRH organized that for me.
00:24:31Um, his name's Jeffrey.
00:24:34This is my favorite.
00:24:35Shout out to Jeffrey.
00:24:36Shout out to Jeffrey.
00:24:37I mean, it, it, it's an amazing story because at the time of your first amputation, this
00:24:48is when you decided you wanted to get on Tik Tok.
00:24:51And there was one clip in particular, which catapulted you into the public eye.
00:24:57Did you find it?
00:24:58Uh, I didn't find it.
00:25:00Yes.
00:25:01There's a reason why people can't find this.
00:25:03Tell us about it and tell us why we can't find it anymore.
00:25:06Cause I scraped it off the internet.
00:25:08I'm like Beyonce.
00:25:09Okay.
00:25:10I eliminated it.
00:25:11This was a clip that actually, uh, got you noticed.
00:25:14Yeah.
00:25:15In Hollywood.
00:25:16Um, well, I, I was a kind of an apprentice barber at the time.
00:25:21And then COVID hit.
00:25:23I got fired and I had to move home back to mom and dad's and I was just really bored.
00:25:31So I started Tik Tok.
00:25:33And then, yeah, I, I, I dunno, one day I put up a skit of me dressed as a nun.
00:25:42People were dead nuts on that.
00:25:44So, yeah.
00:25:45There's one of John on the internet as a nun, which hasn't been taken down.
00:25:48No, no.
00:25:49Well, no one's clicking on it.
00:25:53So off the back of that, uh, you were noticed.
00:25:56And this is where you got the Midnight Club gig from.
00:25:59Yeah.
00:26:00Casting office in LA.
00:26:01And you hadn't acted before.
00:26:03No, they cast me as villager number like four in my school play.
00:26:07I was fuming.
00:26:08They just stuck me in the back.
00:26:10Yeah.
00:26:11So, so no acting experience at all.
00:26:13You're cast in this huge Netflix show.
00:26:15Yeah.
00:26:16What was that experience like?
00:26:18Mad.
00:26:19Um, yeah, it was just, I mean, I, I immediately, I was like, somebody's going to realize this
00:26:27is a bad idea, but then I kind of looked up in the contracts and you get paid for like
00:26:32the first episode.
00:26:33And I was like, Grant, I can live with that.
00:26:35So yeah.
00:26:36And then they didn't fire me.
00:26:38So.
00:26:39And then off the back of that things move really quickly.
00:26:42And, uh, yeah, well, I've Mike Flanagan really to thank for my entire career.
00:26:48Um, he cast me in the second show then.
00:26:52And yeah, it was just a lovely entry and quite an easy entry.
00:26:58Let's be honest, into the industry.
00:27:00Um, I had people that looked out for me and he always looks out for me.
00:27:04So.
00:27:05Yeah.
00:27:06And then that led to how to train your dragon, which you got to shoot here in Ireland.
00:27:09Yeah.
00:27:10Belfast.
00:27:11Yeah.
00:27:12Um, and that whole experience, I mean, you see, I'm looking at the face here of John Bishop
00:27:18because, you know, I'm looking at this story and, you know, from school to losing a leg to doing a tick tock as a nun to actually then getting, you know, skydied by Hollywood to end up in a Hollywood movie.
00:27:30And yet they still make a movie of John Bishop's life instead.
00:27:34Yeah.
00:27:35How do we get on that gig?
00:27:37And can I act as myself?
00:27:39Well, yeah, but as we've only just met, I don't know how could have got you in the film.
00:27:44Yeah.
00:27:45We can build on it from here.
00:27:47We can build a whole film around this.
00:27:49Can there be a sequel?
00:27:50Well, obviously you're still alive, so.
00:27:51Of course there can be a sequel.
00:27:53Of course there can be a sequel.
00:27:54We'll get on that.
00:27:55We'll get working on that.
00:27:56We can both dress as nuns and, yeah.
00:27:58Well, we'll have to stop doing that.
00:28:00It's becoming a habit.
00:28:01Yeah.
00:28:02Yay!
00:28:10My dad loved that one.
00:28:12That joke.
00:28:13Yeah.
00:28:14You have a busy year coming up.
00:28:16Tell us what we can see you in next.
00:28:19Well, I was kind of hoping, like, the toy show.
00:28:22Yes.
00:28:23Yeah.
00:28:24You get some kid to, like, lie or something.
00:28:26They're a hero.
00:28:27Just, yeah.
00:28:28Okay.
00:28:29We can definitely sort that out.
00:28:30Would love to be on the toy show.
00:28:35You're also going to be in Carrie.
00:28:37Is that right?
00:28:38A remake of Carrie?
00:28:39Oh, yeah.
00:28:40With Mike, yeah.
00:28:41Yeah.
00:28:42Yeah.
00:28:43Yeah.
00:28:44I love how you're just like, yeah, it's just a remake of a Stephen King movie.
00:28:46I'm just in that.
00:28:47It's all good.
00:28:48The massive Carrie.
00:28:49Yeah.
00:28:50I don't remember when I was a kid.
00:28:51That was the first horror film that I saw.
00:28:53Yeah.
00:28:54Amazing.
00:28:55Yeah, he threw me a bone with that one now.
00:28:56Yeah, to be fair.
00:28:57No, fantastic.
00:28:58No, it was, er...
00:28:59It was brilliant, fun to film.
00:29:02Especially cos, like, I love horror.
00:29:03Oh, you've done it?
00:29:04Yeah, it's done.
00:29:05It's done.
00:29:06It's coming out?
00:29:07Yeah.
00:29:08Oh, Jesus, you're busy.
00:29:09Yeah, yeah.
00:29:10Jesus, I've never met anybody who is so easily as brave as you.
00:29:17You're talking about what you've been through with nonchalance,
00:29:20and then you're talking about a career that people could only dream of,
00:29:23as if you've just, you're working quicksave.
00:29:26It's, like, amazing.
00:29:28I bet you carry it so well.
00:29:30Oh, thanks.
00:29:31Yeah, that was, er...
00:29:33I know, family-keeping ground, I know, so, yeah.
00:29:35Yeah, but if I'd have been on Trades, if I would,
00:29:38you'd have been saying to Jonathan Ross,
00:29:40hey, no, but do you know who I am?
00:29:44I don't think any, any, no-one in that show knew who I was.
00:29:47I think most people who watched it didn't know.
00:29:49They were like, why is she there?
00:29:50Er, no, no, no.
00:29:52No, the casting director was like, just, you wait till she gets annoyed.
00:29:56She's there to piss in Jonathan Ross's ear.
00:29:58No.
00:29:59Er, Ruth, I'm delayed to say, er, you're going to stay with us.
00:30:03Er, thank you so, so much.
00:30:05Er, you can see Ruth on both the fall of the House of Usher.
00:30:07And the Midnight Club streaming now on Netflix.
00:30:12Still to come, double Olympic gold medalist Kelly Harrington is here
00:30:16and the one and only Mr James Nesbitt.
00:30:18Don't go away, back after these.
00:30:20Er, welcome back to the Late Late Show.
00:30:21Ruth Codd and John Bishop are still with us and I'm delighted to welcome my next guest who is,
00:30:25an award-winning actor who has lit up some of the biggest shows in television for over three decades.
00:30:30And whose on-screen talent is only matched by his handsome good looks and his off-screen charm.
00:31:01He's starring in Netflix's number one crime drama Runaway.
00:31:04Would you please welcome County Antrim's greatest export since Bushmills and Ian Paisley,
00:31:08Mr James Nesbitt.
00:31:10Welcome to the show.
00:31:19What a threesome that is.
00:31:20Indeed.
00:31:21Me, Bushmills and Paisley.
00:31:22I was about to say, it's a threesome that we all probably don't need in our life, James.
00:31:40We were going through an airport just after Christmas.
00:31:43You were telling me about this big show that you were doing on Netflix.
00:31:46And you thought it was going to do quite well.
00:31:50It is the number one show on Netflix worldwide.
00:31:53Can you control that little grin?
00:31:56How delighted are you?
00:31:57Well, it's sort of bonkers.
00:31:59You know, I mean, particularly, I've been, you were saying there in the intro,
00:32:02I've done this for quite a long time, still getting away with it.
00:32:04But I turned 54 last week, plus four, plus three, 61, 61.
00:32:13It's just numbers.
00:32:14But no, the fact that it's captured in the way Harlan Coben shows do,
00:32:20the imagination of people all around the world.
00:32:22That's what's interesting about it.
00:32:23Like all ages, all people, all countries.
00:32:26People like to go on a roller coaster.
00:32:28It's a brilliant story and a brilliant cast.
00:32:31Yeah.
00:32:32You're in this with Minnie Driver.
00:32:34Uh-huh.
00:32:35And also Ruth Jones.
00:32:36Yeah, brilliant, Ruth Jones.
00:32:37You go on.
00:32:38I mean, Minnie, Minnie, I worked with years ago, so I knew Minnie,
00:32:40but Ruth, you know, John, you say the same.
00:32:43I mean, you get to a certain age and you kind of think you've met everyone.
00:32:46In a way, we've known each other a long time.
00:32:47You think you've kind of done all that work.
00:32:49And Ruth and I saw each other at the read-through and went,
00:32:52oh, we've never met each other and we never worked together.
00:32:54And she was nervous, you know?
00:32:59And I was like, you're Ruth Jones, you know?
00:33:01And she felt intimidated.
00:33:02It was entering a new arena for her.
00:33:04And she was brilliant, accessible, fantastic.
00:33:06She brings an incredible thing to that character, Elena.
00:33:09And she's not kind of bogged down with hidden agenda or secret ego.
00:33:16She just gets on with it.
00:33:17She's lovely, you know?
00:33:18And the story is...
00:33:20Well, you play a dad.
00:33:21Your daughter goes missing.
00:33:23Yeah, I mean, I'm like...
00:33:24I've played so many dads who've lost their kids.
00:33:28And, like, I've played so many policemen who...
00:33:31I've played, you know, police...
00:33:32I mean, I'm the longest-serving policeman in Northern Ireland.
00:33:34And everyone...
00:33:37Every actor that's ever, over the years,
00:33:40got a part where they're playing opposite me
00:33:42as a kind of a junior to me,
00:33:43know they're going to get shot at some point.
00:33:46But, no, in this I play a dad
00:33:48whose eldest daughter, played by Ellie DeLange,
00:33:51who's an extraordinary young actor.
00:33:53And that's one of the great things about Harlan
00:33:55and the people that make it, Key Street.
00:33:57They kind of reinvent and find these new people, you know,
00:34:01that you feel responsible about
00:34:03as they're going up the ladder when you're kind of going down
00:34:05and saying, hey, good luck.
00:34:08And she goes missing.
00:34:10And so there's a human element to the story, obviously,
00:34:14but with all these ridiculous, extraordinary different strands
00:34:17and stories that Harlan Coben does.
00:34:19And yet it comes together
00:34:21because you sort of still want a father to find his daughter.
00:34:24We've got a little clip.
00:34:26This is you doing your stuff in Runaway.
00:34:34Page.
00:34:37It's Dad.
00:34:41It's Dad.
00:34:42Page. Hey, hey.
00:34:43No, what, what?
00:34:44Page.
00:34:45Page.
00:34:47Page.
00:34:48Page.
00:34:49Page.
00:34:51Page.
00:34:52Please.
00:34:53Sweetheart.
00:34:54Page.
00:34:55Please.
00:34:56Please.
00:34:57Page.
00:34:58Take care of me.
00:34:59Page.
00:35:00It's Dad.
00:35:01Page.
00:35:02It's Dad.
00:35:03Just come with me.
00:35:04Come with me and everything will be okay.
00:35:05I promise you.
00:35:06I promise you.
00:35:15So there's a story about losses, about pain, about what people can do when they're desperate.
00:35:19Did being a Man United fan help you with this role?
00:35:22Yeah.
00:35:23Yeah.
00:35:24It was, it was something, you know, obviously as a father I was able to kind of locate the
00:35:28pain of losing a daughter.
00:35:29But as a Man United fan, it was very easy last year to locate the pain of being a Manchester
00:35:35United fan and the sense of loss that that brings.
00:35:37And the sense of loss that that brings.
00:35:38You brought Will Arnett to Anfield, is that right?
00:35:40I did, yeah.
00:35:41Is he an actual?
00:35:42He's now experiencing the same feelings.
00:35:44Yeah, I know.
00:35:45I'm confident about that, by the way.
00:35:47Yeah, yeah.
00:35:48No, he, yeah, we came, we went to watch Burnley last year.
00:35:50He's a Liverpool fan, believe it or not.
00:35:52Oh, really?
00:35:53Is it actually a Liverpool fan?
00:35:54Well, do you know Julia Roberts is a massive United fan?
00:35:57Like, I mean, you know, we're lucky enough to know, I would know Sir Alex quite well.
00:36:01And he said to me a couple of years ago, he says, oh, that's Julia on the phone.
00:36:05And I went, Julia who?
00:36:06And he went, Julia Roberts.
00:36:07And I went, what?
00:36:08She's a big United fan.
00:36:09How do we get Will Arnett?
00:36:12When we get Will Arnett, you get pretty woman.
00:36:14That's not fair, is it?
00:36:15Yeah.
00:36:16I love the way that Ruth is just sitting there like a tennis umpire in the middle.
00:36:21I didn't even get a box ticket.
00:36:23You shot a lot of this in Manchester.
00:36:27Yeah.
00:36:28Of course, you kicked off your career with cold feet.
00:36:30It must have been fun to be back in Manchester.
00:36:32I love it.
00:36:33You know, it's like, and you know, I mean, we're in a city.
00:36:37I come from a country where we're all connected in a sense to places like that, you know, near water.
00:36:44And I love it.
00:36:46I mean, you know, cold feet was such an important part of my life.
00:36:49What was particularly good this year is that it was the last year of my second daughter, Mary's.
00:36:56Mary's, um, her graduation, uh, from Manchester in French and English.
00:37:00And she actually, we filmed a lot at her university.
00:37:03And she ended up being an extra in it, uh, with actually a spoken words.
00:37:08She had to tell me to piss off.
00:37:10Um.
00:37:11Was that a stretch for her?
00:37:12She was convincing.
00:37:14I don't know what to say.
00:37:15No.
00:37:16And I love it up there.
00:37:17And it's like a family.
00:37:18The thing with Harlan Coben shows, what they're very good at is that they do bring you back.
00:37:22Please, God, they keep doing that.
00:37:24And, um, so when you arrive in the first day, everyone knows their worth.
00:37:29Everyone that's in their own particular job are the best people to do that job.
00:37:33So you, you just arrive and you think, right, well, let's go and have a bit of crack, you know?
00:37:36I love that something happened in, in this series where there was anti-aging technology used.
00:37:43Can you talk us through what this was?
00:37:45Well, I didn't even know what was happening.
00:37:46And then when I watched that scene, I thought, God, I look good in that.
00:37:49And then, I mean, honest to God, I didn't realize.
00:37:52And then, uh, someone said, yeah, well, they've taken the years off you.
00:37:55Um, so it was me and Minnie when we first meet.
00:37:58And so this is, is this something that they, they do in post-production, I'm assuming?
00:38:02Yeah, yeah, yeah, they do. I mean, they did a kind of a, uh, it was a week, but I, I didn't...
00:38:06We actually have a little clip. We actually have a little clip here.
00:38:08Oh, God. Where did it all go wrong?
00:38:10Ruth's been in a lot of stuff with special effects.
00:38:11So you can, you can judge if you think this is a decent job.
00:38:15This is, this is young Jimmy.
00:38:17I just thought that was good in there.
00:38:23Ah, look at that!
00:38:24Hello. Hi.
00:38:25Oh, shit. Sorry.
00:38:27I'm Ingrid.
00:38:29I mean, you're Ingrid.
00:38:30I'm...
00:38:33Jesus.
00:38:34Hello, Jesus.
00:38:36So nice to finally meet you. I've heard so much about you.
00:38:40Read your book.
00:38:45What do we know? I'm...
00:38:46Is he getting away with that, Ruth?
00:38:48I'm, I'm...
00:38:49I think it's the same filter that they use on The Real Housewives.
00:38:52I'm swearing to you. I didn't realise that that's what they were doing.
00:38:56Although, funnily enough, I have played Jesus before.
00:38:58I played Jesus in Godspell in the Ulster Youth Theatre when I was 18.
00:39:01OK.
00:39:02What a summer of love that was.
00:39:04I don't know.
00:39:05Well, look, I know that filter is working because you also, over Christmas, you were shooting Baywatch, I think, up in Portrush.
00:39:12This is from your Instagram.
00:39:14Oh, God, I'm not allowed to control my Instagram.
00:39:17Was the...
00:39:19Was the filter on that or is that...
00:39:21Do you know what? I don't, I'm not allowed to control my Instagram in case we go out and have a couple of pints and then I go...
00:39:27Someone does that for me.
00:39:29That's the Instagram that everybody wants.
00:39:30Everybody wants Jimmy Nesbitt in charge of his own Instagram.
00:39:33You'd have a million followers if we actually had that.
00:39:36Yeah.
00:39:37So, so that was...
00:39:39That's up in...
00:39:40I see swim all year round in Portrush where I spend a lot of my time.
00:39:42So, no special effects there?
00:39:44No, no, no.
00:39:45Just blood, sweat and tears.
00:39:47And that was over Christmas.
00:39:49That was...
00:39:50Jeez, I've done that.
00:39:51I've swam in Portrush.
00:39:52It's cold.
00:39:53Yeah.
00:39:54Oh, it's cold.
00:39:55It's brilliant.
00:39:56But also it's...
00:39:57And we've done it for years and years ever since Covid and actually now I do it all year round and I do it when I'm there and it's great for mental health and it raises a lot of money for mental health strategies.
00:40:07It is one of the great things for mental health to see someone.
00:40:10John, of course, you were doing an audition for the new James Bond, I believe, a couple of months ago when you were Down Under on tour.
00:40:18Are there any...
00:40:19Well, this is from your Instagram.
00:40:20Is there any special effects on this?
00:40:21Oh, please.
00:40:22Oh!
00:40:23That's a fella!
00:40:24Hey!
00:40:25That's a man!
00:40:26Wow!
00:40:27I tell you what, we are...
00:40:28We're going to need a bigger boat.
00:40:29That's brilliant.
00:40:30That's a big lad that was, wasn't it?
00:40:31Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:40:32I felt like a gorilla there walking on.
00:40:33I mean, that was dead.
00:40:34That was not Port Rush, John.
00:40:35Where was that?
00:40:36No, that was...
00:40:37That was in Australia.
00:40:38OK.
00:40:39One of the white sandy beaches of Australia.
00:40:40And I just saw it and I thought, I'm going to go swimming.
00:40:41So that's not a costume, near me undies.
00:40:42I just took my clothes off and ran in.
00:40:43That's brilliant.
00:40:44Wow!
00:40:45Wow!
00:40:46Wow!
00:40:47I tell you what, we are...
00:40:48We're going to need a bigger boat.
00:40:49That's brilliant.
00:40:50That's brilliant.
00:40:51That's brilliant.
00:40:52That's brilliant.
00:40:53That's brilliant.
00:40:54That's brilliant.
00:40:55That's brilliant.
00:40:56That's brilliant.
00:40:57I saw you being interviewed a couple of weeks ago.
00:41:00You were offered Celebrity Traitors, the next series.
00:41:03You have decided to turn that down.
00:41:05Yeah, well, only because, A, I'm an actor.
00:41:08And then you might get found out that you're not a very good actor.
00:41:10And, B, yours was just astonishing.
00:41:12Oh!
00:41:13That was brilliant.
00:41:14And it's funny, I was...
00:41:15Because Chris was a good actor.
00:41:17And then you might get found out that you're not a very good actor.
00:41:20And, B, yours was just astonishing.
00:41:22Oh!
00:41:23That was brilliant.
00:41:24And it's funny, I was...
00:41:26Because Chris Evans was offered it.
00:41:27Yes.
00:41:28And we both decided to...
00:41:30To not go for it.
00:41:31To not do it.
00:41:32How do you think you would do, Bruce?
00:41:33How do you think you would do, Bruce?
00:41:34I don't know.
00:41:35Because I watched theirs.
00:41:36And you think the first one, you think...
00:41:38And because the first one was so good, you don't want to be the second one.
00:41:42But my wife loved it.
00:41:43And...
00:41:44But it's one of those things where, like you, you think...
00:41:47Because it's so intense.
00:41:49It looks intense.
00:41:50It was so brilliant.
00:41:51And I hadn't watched the other series, so I think...
00:41:54I mean, basically, I think my fear was that people would go,
00:41:56I knew you couldn't act.
00:41:58You know.
00:41:59When you're in it, Ruth, does it just...
00:42:03Consume you?
00:42:04Do you forget the reality?
00:42:06Do you forget these cameras?
00:42:07Yeah.
00:42:08Yeah, you do.
00:42:09You get sucked in.
00:42:11And I think...
00:42:12I'm so competitive that I...
00:42:14I really...
00:42:15I tried not to get sucked in.
00:42:16I was like, I'm going to go in and go...
00:42:18I'm going to be so funny.
00:42:20And then I was like...
00:42:21Yeah.
00:42:22You're a traitor.
00:42:23Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:42:24You're in it to win it.
00:42:25Yeah.
00:42:26Look, before you go, I just want to say that I love you.
00:42:31And I love having a laugh with you.
00:42:34And I just want to say thanks on behalf of a lot of families on this island
00:42:40for the work that you are doing for Legacy North of the Border.
00:42:44And I know that is something which is dear to your heart.
00:42:47Yeah.
00:42:48I've worked with an organisation called Wave for 23 years
00:42:51who were set up to offer counselling and support to anyone bereaved,
00:42:55traumatised or affected by the troubles.
00:42:56They continue to do that work.
00:42:58It's been amazing.
00:42:59But where my heart really lies with Wave in the many, many big years gone by
00:43:06has been with the families of the disappeared,
00:43:07some of whom I am delighted to say are here tonight.
00:43:09The first time I went to Wave, I...
00:43:14Sorry.
00:43:15I met Michael McConville, who is here tonight.
00:43:18He is the son of Gene McConville, who was abducted in 1972.
00:43:23There are other family members here tonight.
00:43:27It has been a process that has worked the relocation of the remains of the disappeared.
00:43:3313 have been found.
00:43:34It does work.
00:43:35Nevertheless, there are still five remaining.
00:43:38Sitting out there tonight are Columba McVeigh, his sister Dimpnacare.
00:43:42I stood with them on a bog in Bragan, in County Monaghan, in a wind that would cut new rain that was pouring down.
00:43:53And watching them look once again as a dig took place to find the remains of their brother.
00:43:59And they didn't come back.
00:44:02All the families that are still remaining without their loved ones' remains want the same thing.
00:44:06They want to have a funeral or a wake or a grave that they can tend to.
00:44:11We all know how important it is to bury our loved ones.
00:44:14If you've been looking for them for 50 years and you don't know where they are, it's incumbent upon all of us to try and support them.
00:44:21And so it's kind of not last throw of the dice.
00:44:24I don't want to say that to them.
00:44:25But people are getting old.
00:44:28And if there is anyone out there who has any information on where the remains of Columba McVeigh, Joe Linsky, Seamus Maguire, Robert Narak and Lisa Dorian who was disappeared in 2005.
00:44:40If you have any information, please contact ICLVR.
00:44:44Because I've seen the anguish that the families went through and I've seen, and it's the worst word to use, but the joy that the ones that got their families back.
00:44:53I beg people, if they've got anything, have a look into your conscience and contact us.
00:45:06Thank you so so much.
00:45:07Thank you so so much.
00:45:09You can catch James in Runaway.
00:45:13It is on Netflix right now.
00:45:16One more time.

00:47:05Good luck.
00:47:06Still to come, three stars off the new RTE drama, The Sacred Vies.
00:47:11Olympic legend Kelly Harrington and music from the Tumbling Paddies.
00:47:15Back after these.
00:47:16Don't go away.
00:47:17Welcome back to The Lilian Show where it is time to ask the question, what do you get if you cross a wedding?
00:47:18Welcome back to the Lilith Show, where it is time to ask the question, what do you get if you cross a wedding, a week in 10 or a reef, a secret love child and a priest in a swimming pool?
00:47:47Well, we're about to find out as we welcome the stars of a hotly anticipated new comedy drama, The Sacred Vows, coming your way on RTE next month. Here is a little sneak peek.
00:48:17People love a promise, but promises are hard to keep.
00:48:24Please pass the sun cream and the holy water as we welcome Aaron Heffernan, Justine Mitchell and Tom Vaughan Lawler.
00:48:36Welcome to the show, guys. Congrats on this. I was lucky enough to get a little sneak taster off the first episode.
00:49:04An Irish family wedding, Justine, in Tenerife. What could possibly go wrong? Apart from everything.
00:49:13Well, you know, the stars, we have a dead priest.
00:49:18Yes, played by Tom. This isn't a spoiler, by the way. No.
00:49:22So, you know, Tom dies early. Yes, early. But then you live on.
00:49:26I live on. I play Father Vincent O'Keefe, who is a priest who's been flown out to officiate the wedding.
00:49:34And he is a man who hasn't seen the sun for 30 years. And he is a priest who, by some administrative cock-up, ends up housed with the young folk, all the party-going members of the...
00:49:48Played beautifully by Aaron. By Aaron and some of our very good-looking cast.
00:49:52And so, I think I'm going to be met with disdain, but I'm met with indifference.
00:49:58And, you know, you can work with disdain. You can't really work with indifference. And he's a man...
00:50:03I work with both every weekend. Oh, okay. Yes.
00:50:05And you get that at home with your kids as well. Exactly.
00:50:08So, he's a man who's kind of... His vocation is not in question. His faith is in question.
00:50:15And then, Justin, you play the mother of the bride, Sandra, and you've got a few secrets in there as well.
00:50:21I do. I do. I play Sandra. It's near of her daughter, who is getting married.
00:50:28You know, a lot of people talk about brides, brisillas, you know, difficult brides.
00:50:33But there is... Sandra is kind of counterweight to that. She's very much suffering from mother of the bride syndrome.
00:50:42Which is a thing. I've checked with the Irish Medical Association. It's a thing. There are symptoms.
00:50:48I have... If anyone is going to a wedding soon and is going to be the mother of the bride, these are the symptoms.
00:50:55Dry mouth. Bloating. Confusion. Bewilderment. Smoking too much secretly. Drinking too much publicly.
00:51:05Rational. And again, I say rational hatred of golf. Cracks in marriage. Feverish curiosity in random artistic projects.
00:51:16Questionable decisions. Come back to haunt you from your past. Yes. That kind of thing.
00:51:24And also, as a parent at a wedding, how you dance now these days could lead maybe to an Instagram post and a family rift.
00:51:33It can... Yeah. It can all go wrong. No inappropriate dancing with your own son, essentially.
00:51:39Correct. Thank you, Aaron. I've got you. Was this a stretch for you?
00:51:43Because your character is also called... Aaron. Aaron, yeah. It was huge for me. Yeah. It's a lot of work.
00:51:50I basically play this kind of posh idiot who is mostly topless and drunk. So it was a real stretch for me to do that, you know.
00:52:02I had to get up every morning. That was it. That's all I had to do. There he is. That's a great picture, man.
00:52:11I mean, there's the gun show there. It's a strong look. You actually got married in the sunshine yourself.
00:52:20I did, yeah. I got married in Portugal. So, I mean, reading the script, it was a real humbler because I saw a lot of stuff in it that reminded me of our wedding abroad.
00:52:32And it was really slightly embarrassing at times. Like, you know, just Irish people abroad being demanding with staff and doing things that, you know, we wouldn't do at home.
00:52:41That's the kind of stuff we're satirizing in the show. And I think maybe some of our wedding guests did that themselves.
00:52:47So this seems to me to be kind of a bit of a sweet gig. Out to Tenerife. What was it? For a month in the sunshine?
00:52:56Yes. I think people...
00:52:57Can you now pretend it was hard work, Tom? Well, people have a misconception about acting being glamorous.
00:53:02And the, you know, mostly it's like standing in a field at two in the morning in the rain or trying to get a shot for a few hours or filming in a public toilet.
00:53:09So when you get three months in Tenerife in the summer, you've got to make sure you're there to work and remember not wander off and, you know, swim in the day.
00:53:18So it's, you know, we're very blessed.
00:53:21Was it a triggering experience for you, Justine? I know that at your own wedding you had certain rules and regulations that people had to go through.
00:53:29Yeah, this is so, so cringy, Paddy. We got married twice because we liked it so much.
00:53:36We got married in a registry office. There were six of us there, me, my husband and two sets of parents.
00:53:44Hi, Mum. I'm on the Late Late Show.
00:53:47And so it was a lovely ceremony, but everyone was filming it. They were all filming it.
00:53:54So I said to my husband, Ben, that for the party we were going to have like three, four weeks later, where we were going to exchange vows in front of our friends,
00:54:03that we all try to be in the moment. Do you know, we really should be in the moment.
00:54:08And he said, yeah, but the photographer doesn't have to be in the moment, you know.
00:54:12I was like, no, no, no, no. Everyone, everyone should be in the moment. Just, just for the ceremony.
00:54:16And yeah, 18 years later, he is still raging. We have no aid memoir of the ceremony.
00:54:24No photos at all. No, no, no photos at all, because I wanted everyone to be in the moment.
00:54:30I have no idea whether everyone was in the moment because we have no photographic evidence of it,
00:54:35because I wanted everyone to be in the moment. So, yeah.
00:54:39How hard was it for you to be in the moment when you were filming this, Aaron,
00:54:42because you had a little family, a little family side interest going on?
00:54:49Yeah. Yeah. Something small happening. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I was, I was flying back and forth.
00:54:55Like there was a lot of partying going on with the cast and a big kind of, you know, a big session over there.
00:55:01And I wasn't really part of it because I was coming back to Dublin to move into our new house with my pregnant wife
00:55:09as I was leaving her to go back to Tenerife and complain about the pool we were sleeping in,
00:55:13or the swimming in and the beds were, you know, too hard the night before.
00:55:17And your wife was heavily pregnant at this stage. And my wife was eight months pregnant.
00:55:20Yeah. And she was doing everything on her own, which was not, it wasn't, it wasn't very well received.
00:55:26I mean, she's extremely patient with me because I was, you know, in the sunshine complaining about things
00:55:33and she was at home with two barking dogs and a pregnant belly.
00:55:36But you would fly back, like, he would fly back at any chance he got to be with his wife and his guys.
00:55:41And he was really, you know, he was amazing. And then he would, you know, it's a long trek. So he was.
00:55:46That was very, very well rescued, Tom. That was.
00:55:49He was sounding like an awful man. Yeah, it was a lot, but it was, it was, it was a really thrilling experience.
00:55:55You know, we were out there for a long time and it was just an insanely fun show to be on, you know,
00:56:01and it's some of the best stuff I've ever read, I think, let alone seeing it after.
00:56:05Now that it's all put together, it's, it's, it's going to be, it's going to be the best thing you guys have ever seen.
00:56:10It's pretty much the opposite of the gritty world of love, hate. It's hard to believe that's 12 years now,
00:56:17but it's a show that just still endures.
00:56:20It's a show that still endures and people still come up and talk to me about it.
00:56:24And, and yeah, I, it's, it's the nature of being an actor to get the, the priest on the one hand,
00:56:32the gangland crime boss on the other. So I'm very lucky to get to play polar opposites.
00:56:38And your dad played a priest.
00:56:40My dad played, my dad played a priest in love, hate. My uncle's a priest in real life.
00:56:45And so it was a lot of holiness. And, and the thing, the theme of this show is John Butler,
00:56:51who wrote it and directed and created it. It's a very sexy show. It's a very contemporary show.
00:56:57It's a very cool look at the Irish abroad in this wedding context.
00:57:03But the thing about John is what he can do is all great writers do it.
00:57:08They've got like two levels. They've got the, he's pitching at this very cool level.
00:57:12And there's this whole of the world. He's got this kind of underlying drama.
00:57:16He's asking big questions about the nature of faith and nature of identity.
00:57:20What is a marriage? How do marriages work? How do friendships work? Why are we here?
00:57:25And he does it with delicacy and humanity and elegance.
00:57:29And we were lucky to have him as our, our captain.
00:57:32Yes. And, and also to, to add to that, he, he's very much like happiness isn't interesting.
00:57:37It's not dramatic. Let's look at the people who go to weddings who feel like they don't fit in.
00:57:43Let's look at the gay young man who isn't necessarily a believer in romantic monogamy.
00:57:50Let's look at the young woman who's in a relationship she doesn't want to be in.
00:57:56Weddings make you take stock. They make you think, where am I in my life?
00:58:01And put a lot of pressure on you. And, and, and, and, you know, the priest who doesn't fit in.
00:58:05No one likes him. No one has any respect for him anymore.
00:58:09That's my house.
00:58:12People on the periphery, John has written about them at weddings, not the bride and groom. No interest.
00:58:18We also, before we let you go, Justin, we have to talk about the movie of the year, Hamnet, that, that you're in.
00:58:24Incredible performance is a very, very intense film, but quite good crack to be part of.
00:58:32I know. Can you believe it?
00:58:33Yeah.
00:58:34The set was, it was light and frothy and fun.
00:58:37I mean, Jessie Buckley is a shaman magician person.
00:58:42How she could, she, she was so full of light, the light poured out of her on set.
00:58:48And yet to, to just be this conveyor of grief and her story in that film.
00:58:55What a woman, what a performance. Great film.
00:58:58A great film and a great cast.
00:59:00And there was a little clip that the film put out this week of you guys all basically letting yourselves go.
00:59:07And this was a sort of a release of, of all that intense performance on screen.
00:59:12So this is, this is you guys having a little bit of a dance song.
00:59:17And of course you must be delighted with Jessie's nomination.
00:59:42Incredible. Just incredible. Yeah. What an achievement. What a woman.
00:59:47Guys, this is so, so good. You can catch the guys in The Sacred Vies.
00:59:53It is on from Sunday, the 1st of February, 9.30, RT1 and RTE Player.
00:59:59Time now to lift the roof with Ireland's greatest party band who have sold out signs outside every gig they play.
01:00:06The good news is they are coming to a stage near you in the next few months.
01:00:10And the good news for us is that they're on our own late, late stage tonight.
01:00:14Here with the current hit Closing Time, would you please welcome the Tumbling Patties.
01:00:19It's Saturday, you dropped me off to meet the lads at the local spot.
01:00:35This town of ours is looking awful quiet.
01:00:40Nothing wild, nothing crazy. She didn't know I love you, baby.
01:00:46See you on the other side of midnight. And I'll be taking it handy.
01:00:52All your ladies and brandies. I sip the blue shanties.
01:00:57When I'm washing down the white. You're here and frisky.
01:01:02All your gannies and whisky. You're here and whisky.
01:01:05You'll do it for me. A few beers down the line.
01:01:09Where you go, I'll follow you. Where you go.
01:01:14And you know, I'll always be true. Sure you know.
01:01:19And if I call, I'll call for you. Unclosing time.
01:01:26The sun breeze blows your hair.
01:01:29From walking on the culpest stairs. Nothing's ever felt disright.
01:01:44You know I want to settle down. There's no one else I'd want to round.
01:01:49But understand, I still need your night
01:01:53And I'll be taking it handy
01:01:55On the bellies and brandies
01:01:58A sip of the shanties
01:02:00When I'm washing down the white
01:02:04Feeling frisky
01:02:05On the giddies and the whisky
01:02:08Knowing you'll be with me
01:02:11A few beers down the line
01:02:13Where you go, I'll follow you
01:02:17Where you go, and you know
01:02:19I'll always be true
01:02:22Sure you know, and if I fall
01:02:24I'll fall for you
01:02:27I'm closing time
01:02:29Closing time
01:02:34I'm closing time
01:02:40I'm closing time
01:02:47Nothing wild, nothing crazy
01:02:51Sure you know I love you, baby
01:02:53See you on the other side of midnight
01:02:57Midnight
01:02:59I'll be taking it handy
01:03:01On the bellies and brandies
01:03:05A sip of the shanties
01:03:07When I'm washing down the white
01:03:10Feeling frisky
01:03:11On the giddies and the whisky
01:03:14Knowing you'll be with me
01:03:16A few beers down the line
01:03:20Where you go, I'll follow you
01:03:23Where you go
01:03:24And you know, I'll always be true
01:03:28Sure you know
01:03:29And if I fall, I'll fall for you
01:03:33I'm closing time
01:03:35And you know, I'll follow you
01:03:40Oh, I'm closing time
01:03:45Oh, I'm closing time
01:03:50Oh, I'm closing time
01:03:55There we go, the Tumblr Patties.
01:04:04They play the three Olympia in Dublin, September the 30th.
01:04:09Before that, a host of other dates all around the island.
01:04:12Details can be found on the Tumblr Patties, official.com.
01:04:15Give it up one more time for the Tumblr Patties.
01:04:17And for Aaron Heffernan, Justine Mitchell and Tom Von Lawler.
01:04:24Thank you, guys.
01:04:25Now, time to reward our studio audience for good behaviour.
01:04:32I mean, and let's be honest, we're using the term good very, very loosely here.
01:04:36As we would like you all to know that the Greenfields Festival takes place
01:04:41on the May bank holiday weekend in Strad Valley County Leash.
01:04:45If you fancy a bop, then you're in for a treat.
01:04:49Oh, you're smiling now.
01:04:50They have five stages, 90 acts across 25 acres,
01:04:54including band performances from the Human League,
01:04:58Block Rock and Beats the Furies, and so much more.
01:05:01There's also a family-friendly area, a food village,
01:05:05with a taste of the world and lots more to see.
01:05:07And do check it all out on the greenfieldsfestival.ie.
01:05:11And so, to dust off your dance shoes and your bell bottoms and get the camping gear ready,
01:05:17they have given us two camping weekend tickets for the festival for everybody in the audience!
01:05:24CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:05:29After the break, here to tell us why she's back fighting inside and outside the ring,
01:05:40double Olympic gold medalist Kelly Harrington will be here.
01:05:43Don't go away.
01:05:44Back after these.
01:05:45APPLAUSE
01:05:46Welcome back to The Little It Show.
01:06:07My final guest is a boxing legend who reached the absolute pinnacle in Paris 2024,
01:06:14when she became the only woman in the history of Irish sport
01:06:18to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals.
01:06:21We are delighted she is back with us tonight.
01:06:23But first, here's a reminder of how she put Ireland on top of the world,
01:06:27not once, but twice.
01:06:29Here she comes, the offending champion.
01:06:36Do or die
01:06:38I am invincible, unbreakable, unstoppable, unshakable
01:06:45They knock me down, I get up again
01:06:48I am the champion, you don't know my name
01:06:52A big shot at the right with Harrington, that was a beauty.
01:06:55Kelly Harrington, from Dublin, Dublin Olympic champion.
01:07:00Please welcome Kelly Harrington.
01:07:06CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
01:07:08Yeah, sit there.
01:07:23I mean, look, you're asking where you sit.
01:07:26I mean, when you've got two of these, Kelly, you can sit wherever you want.
01:07:29I mean...
01:07:30So, so good.
01:07:33It is so good.
01:07:34It's amazing to have you back on the show.
01:07:38It's amazing to have you back in the ring.
01:07:40You've just won the national title again.
01:07:43How has this happened?
01:07:44Do you know, it's the 12th national title that I've won, and people ask us, how does it feel?
01:07:53It makes me kind of feel old, because I'm like, it's the 12th one.
01:07:57I've been boxing for 21 years, it's mad, and it still feels the same today as what I felt
01:08:03in 2010, like, when I won my first national title.
01:08:07It's a great honour to step in to the ring in your own country, in front of your own people,
01:08:12but it's also a really hard place to box, you know.
01:08:16Sometimes it's actually easier to box in a different country
01:08:19when you're not surrounded by a lot of people who you know.
01:08:23So, yeah.
01:08:23Okay, what did I miss?
01:08:25Because whenever you won these medals, you said that that was it, you were retiring,
01:08:30and then suddenly you're sitting here, you've won another national title.
01:08:33I suppose I just missed the absolute chaos of it all, because it's just,
01:08:42there has to be a madness in you to actually do this type of thing, like,
01:08:48to try and hit someone one or two times more than they hit you.
01:08:53You have to be a little bit tapped to do that, like, you know.
01:08:55But when did you decide that, you know, there's something about the itch that needs scratched,
01:09:02but actually it's a huge decision to go back in the ring?
01:09:05To be honest, like, there's so much pressure on you coming up to it in Olympics,
01:09:12and after Tokyo, everybody automatically thought that I was going to Paris.
01:09:17They don't realise you have to qualify, like, and it's really hard to qualify.
01:09:21And then, like, I qualified, and people were like,
01:09:23oh, Jesus, I thought you were already qualified, like, you know.
01:09:26And you're like, no, you have to qualify.
01:09:28Then they realise, now you're going, and then they think you're going to get a gold medal straight away,
01:09:33you know, like, because you've done it before.
01:09:34Oh, you've done that before, yeah.
01:09:35Yeah, you know, like, it's nothing to you, like, but it's really bloody hard.
01:09:38So, there was a lot of pressure, like, I think more so from myself.
01:09:44And I just, when the fight was over, like, it was like, ah, that's me doing now, you know.
01:09:51Like, I had a nice break.
01:09:52I had, like, 15, 16 months off.
01:09:55I got to enjoy it with my wife.
01:09:58We got to go on holidays.
01:09:59We got to go to concerts and do normal things like the normal people do.
01:10:05And it was nice, but, like, I miss the chaos of it all.
01:10:09I miss the madness, you know.
01:10:11Well, you miss the chaos.
01:10:12You miss the madness.
01:10:13But your wife, Mandy, I was speaking to her before the show.
01:10:16Obviously, you had a run this past her.
01:10:18Yeah.
01:10:19She doesn't miss it just as much as you.
01:10:21No, so, like, I would obviously, like, if Mandy wasn't happy about me coming back, then I wouldn't.
01:10:28Because we're married and, like, I suppose that's what you have to do.
01:10:31You have to listen to her at a half sometimes.
01:10:34So, I, like, I sat down and I told her.
01:10:37But she knew it was coming anyways.
01:10:39And I said, like, what would you say?
01:10:41And she says, well, to be honest with you, like, I, like, I wouldn't really be that happy.
01:10:46And I just asked her, why?
01:10:48And she said, like, I'm not the easiest person to live with.
01:10:51When I'm in full-on, like, prep mode.
01:10:55Focus mode.
01:10:56Because, like, I've always gone for the gold standard.
01:10:58Because the training is brutal.
01:10:59It's brutal and mentally it's very taxing.
01:11:02Honestly, the training is, it's not, the training's not that, it's not that it's brutal.
01:11:05Like, but it's, I just have very high standards.
01:11:08Like, I have the gold standard.
01:11:09Like, I don't, like, everything, like, I expect the gold standard from everybody around me.
01:11:14And that's from coaches, support staff, from everybody, you know.
01:11:20And, yeah, so, she, like, I told her, look, listen, it's not going to be as mad as it was, you know.
01:11:29But, yeah, so.
01:11:30And is it?
01:11:31For the moment, it's not, you know.
01:11:33I'm just taking it day by day.
01:11:34Okay, you're taking it day by day.
01:11:36I'm sort of getting excited.
01:11:37I'm getting giddy.
01:11:38I'm trying to work out how old you're going to be whenever LA comes around.
01:11:41Is there a chance that you might still be aiming for that?
01:11:46There is, like, I could, I could make LA, you know.
01:11:49But, like, I've never looked to go to any Olympics.
01:11:54And I just kind of let it happen naturally.
01:11:56So there's no pressure.
01:11:58But for the moment, I have a much bigger fight on me hands.
01:12:02You do.
01:12:02And this is something that I want to talk to you about.
01:12:04Because you're not just fighting outside the ring.
01:12:07Sorry, inside the ring.
01:12:08You're fighting outside the ring at the moment for your local community.
01:12:12Yeah.
01:12:13So we're, like, we have a campaign going at the moment for Save the Pitch.
01:12:19Basically, at the back of my house on Portlano, there's a pitch.
01:12:23And then at the back of me mother and father's house, this is the pitch here.
01:12:26At the back of me mother and father's house, there's a corporation depot.
01:12:31And there was plans because a lot of the corporation depots have now moved out to Ballymun.
01:12:37And they're all kind of located out there.
01:12:40And they work from there.
01:12:40There's a couple of them around the city and stuff.
01:12:42But the plans was to build housing in that corporation depot.
01:12:47And that's an absolutely brilliant plan.
01:12:49And everybody from the community was all up for that, you know.
01:12:51We all have family on the housing list, you know.
01:12:54I have family, the community have families.
01:12:57They're looking for housing.
01:12:58We're in the middle of a housing crisis.
01:13:00So it seems like a good idea to start with.
01:13:02With that, you know.
01:13:03But then?
01:13:04Then they push the border, the red line, basically.
01:13:07And they're trying to take away our recreational pitch, the safe place we have for kids, teenagers,
01:13:14adults to go and to play sport.
01:13:17It's also a place where if parents have children who are a flight risk, they can come in.
01:13:23And as you can see, it's gated.
01:13:25They close the gate and they don't have to worry about the kid coming out onto a main road or anything, you know.
01:13:30And this is somewhere where you grew up.
01:13:32This is somewhere where Troy Parrott played his first football as well.
01:13:35So there's an emotional aspect to this for you as well.
01:13:38There is an emotional.
01:13:39Like, I've grew up there.
01:13:40I've trained there.
01:13:41I trained throughout COVID on that pitch with my coach.
01:13:43I've trained where I've had the people from the community on the pitch training during COVID and stuff.
01:13:49And what I would like to see is integration with the new community from the depot and being able to happen in that playground, in that pitch.
01:14:01You know, we're looking for integration, not elimination of what's there, you know.
01:14:05And we're not asking for much.
01:14:07We are just, we just want to keep this, but we actually want an upgrade.
01:14:10And what I'd love to see on a, not even so much as half of it, but a good bit of the pitch.
01:14:16I would love to see a playground built on that for children with additional and sensory needs.
01:14:22And kind of a cover on the top.
01:14:24So if parents are at home and their kids are, you know, climbing the walls and it's raining out, then they can come and they can play.
01:14:30And they're, again, close the gate while someone's inside the other side of the pitch playing football or basketball, you know.
01:14:36And that's, that's where communities are built, you know.
01:14:40New, old, built all in this, in this pitch.
01:14:43So it's not a lot we're asking for.
01:14:45We're not against housing.
01:14:46We're absolutely for housing to be built on that depot.
01:14:49So the council would say, yep, a lot of people would support you on this.
01:14:56Honestly, though, I have, I have yet to meet a person who, who doesn't support it.
01:15:01You know, it's, it's a no brainer to keep that there, you know.
01:15:04And actually funny enough, I was in Cork, Cork there for a couple of days and I, like, a lot of people would know me as the boxer.
01:15:12And now it's like, ah, you're going, I hope you're going to save that pitch now.
01:15:16So everybody's talking about saving the pitch, you know.
01:15:18So the council would say that they've got an obligation to build houses.
01:15:21They also say that there's another space 250 metres away, which is going to be an outdoor space.
01:15:26They say they're putting in a cultural space for the new complex.
01:15:30That's, you don't believe that's sufficient?
01:15:32So it's a hundred metre, it's a hundred metre square metres of a room that they're going to put into this complex,
01:15:39which is a private development, therefore the old residents cannot go in there.
01:15:44And if little Tommy wants to go and kick his ball, he can't kick it in there because it's not an outdoor space.
01:15:48Plus it's private, we can't use it.
01:15:51The space they're talking about that they're going to put more funding into and develop is in the flats around the corner.
01:15:57That's, that's unacceptable.
01:16:00It's like, it's two, it's all different places, you know, like, and that space belongs to the residents in those flats.
01:16:07So I know as a kid growing up there, if I'm in them flats and I'm making noise, Sandra's going to shout out a window and go,
01:16:14here, get out of these bleeding flats, you're not from here, you know, like, and that's, that's the truth, like, she does, like,
01:16:19and if you're in there and the guards come along and they ask you, where are you from?
01:16:24What's your name? Where are you from?
01:16:26Right, back over to where you're from.
01:16:28That's, like, I'm from the inner city.
01:16:30Anyone who's from anywhere that, like, with flats or anything knows that that's, that's what the way it goes, you know, that belongs to them.
01:16:37It's not belonged to us.
01:16:38I mean, listening to you tonight, you're, you're very, very passionate about it.
01:16:42I'm, I'm thinking, never mind the ring.
01:16:45I mean, politics could be something that could we see you in at some stage?
01:16:49You know what, like, I've got a lot of that later, that during the week, people asking the same question, but no, I, there's obviously an election, a by-election coming up.
01:17:02And I'm very happy to stand by a lot of the political parties throughout this campaign because they've been absolutely brilliant.
01:17:11We have the majority of them on board who are backing us for this, you know, but I will not be running in any election or anything.
01:17:18The only thing I run after is Mandy when she's making me dinner.
