17:13But the chicks' months of being waited on are coming to an end.
17:21As the days continue to get shorter this far south,
17:25the water is getting colder.
17:32Currents are shifting and prime feeding areas are moving further away.
17:44Soon, her parents will be gone for months on end.
17:49And the chick will be left to fend for herself.

31:09Summer here is the wettest time of year.
31:14Over 70 cm of rain can fall in a single month.
31:21While in the south, in Australia's northern territory, there is serious drought.
31:33Out here, bushfires can spread 25 km each day.
31:42Months without rain and dry grasslands are like a tinderbox.
31:48It only takes a tiny spark to set these flammable plants alight.
31:55Add wind and the woodland is ablaze.
32:06Those that can flee for their lives.
32:15But not everyone has the nerve.
32:19or the know-how.
32:25These hooded parrot chicks are one month old.
32:34They're getting ready to fledge.
32:36But they've left it too late.
32:42As well as the flames, deadly firehawks are on the prowl.
32:48looking for creatures flushed out by the fire.
33:00The chicks have missed their chance.
33:22Bushfires kill billions of animals every year.
33:33Which is why the chicks' parents have planned ahead.
33:48The home they've chosen, this termite mound made of sand and clay, is fireproof.
34:03And this scorched ground is in fact what the chicks need to tempt them out.
34:15The grasses have dropped their seeds.
34:19Just in time for the parrot's first meal out as a family.
34:27In less than a week, the chicks will leave home.
34:32And the parents will be empty nesters until they breed again next year.
34:43The winds that gave fuel to these fires are the south-easterly trade winds.
34:51Vast currents of air that are carried west as the earth rotates.
34:55and pulled north towards the heat of the sun.
35:02As they sweep over the Indian Ocean, they change the direction of the currents beneath.
35:10creating conditions for the sea's most important food source to thrive.
35:19Plankton.
35:20Microscopic plants and animals.
35:22The staple food of almost every marine ecosystem.
35:34The miniature plants produce over half of the oxygen that we breathe.
35:52On this coral reef, they feed fish.
35:57from the smallest to the largest.
36:14Reef manta rays with a four-meter wingspan make a seasonal migration around these atoms following the plankton.
36:45Swimming one behind the other, they catch plankton from the slipstream of the manta in front.
36:53And as the leader turns, they form what's known as a feeding cyclone.
37:02Channeling the tiny plants and animals into their supersized mouths.
37:14These gentle giants need a constant flow of water to breathe.
37:23So, with their wing-like fins, these birds of the sea are always on the move.
37:33Returning to this bay year after year in numbers up to 5,000 strong for the biggest manta feeding aggregation
37:44in the world.
37:51While the mantas are free to follow their food,
37:56in the same ocean 6,000 kilometers south,
38:02the king penguin chick is close to starving.
38:24It's been four months since her parents left to find food.
38:29And she hasn't eaten in all that time.
38:43Most parents have returned with bellies full of fish.
38:52But hers have yet to make an appearance.
39:02In response to fasting, her metabolism and growth rate have slowed.
39:11Beneath all that fluff, she's lost 70% of her body weight.
39:18And is now just 4 kilograms.
39:25King penguin chicks can survive without food longer than any other bird.
39:35But each year, half starve to death, waiting for their parents to return.
40:01But her mum and dad aren't going to let that happen.
40:08They arrive in the nick of time.
40:24The family is at last reunited.
40:31With her parents' help, this chick has made it to eight months.
40:39The time it's taken for our planet to journey two-thirds of its way round the sun.
40:49By the time it's gone full circle, this chick must be ready to go it alone.
41:11As we enter the final leg of our journey,
41:15in the north, the sun's rays become less intense.
41:23Temperatures fall.
41:25And this triggers a season of spectacular change.
41:37Autumn.
41:45And it's not only the leaves that are changing colour.
41:51In north-east India, heads are turning.
42:05Because the one and only male in this group of golden langers has never looked so good.
42:18For most of the year, he's creamy white in colour.
42:22But in the breeding season, his coat turns a stunning gold.
42:27making him irresistible to the troops' six females.
42:38These shy langers are becoming increasingly endangered.
42:45As their habitat has fragmented, their numbers have halved in the last 30 years.
42:57There are only six and a half thousand left in the world.
43:08But this male is doing his best to get those numbers rising.
43:21And he's not the only one feeling hot-blooded right now.
43:31As temperatures continue to fall, in northern Norway, this alpha male musk ox prepares to breed.
43:45He's responsible for all the youngsters and females in his harem.
43:51And autumn is when it's hardest to defend them.
44:11To prepare for the hardship of winter to come, these 400-kilogram herbivores have grown an extra layer of insulation
44:23beneath their long, shaggy outer coats.
44:26One of the warmest natural fibres in the world.
44:37But for the alpha male, there's a much more pressing problem than the cold.
44:49Lone males that come here to steal his harem.
45:00It's the alpha's job to fight them off.
45:07He sidesteps to make himself look bigger.
45:13But his rival is an equal match.
45:19And is not backing down.
45:34Running head-on towards each other at 50 kilometers an hour is like driving towards an oncoming car.
45:51If the alpha's defeated, he'll lose all his females.
45:59Ten centimeter skulls and horns protect them from fatal brain injury.
46:22The challenger is finally chased off.
46:28Leaving the alpha free to mate with all the females in his harem.
46:36For this season, at least.
46:46For this season, at least.
46:50It's late October.
46:52and the largest shift in the Earth's weather system is underway.
47:02For the last four months, northeast India has been the wettest place on the planet.
47:12Now, as the sun's intensity moves further south, it pulls the tropical rain band across the equator into the southern
47:23hemisphere.
47:25Where one elephant family is desperate for it to arrive.
47:37This herd has endured six months of grueling drought, which has taken its toll.
47:49especially on the two youngest members of the family.
48:01They're exhausted and struggling to keep up with the herd.
48:19This late in the dry season, the calves are at their weakest.
48:29And the lions know it.
48:37Nightfall brings a little respite from the heat, but also increased danger.
48:48Our specialist night vision cameras allow us to see in the dark.
49:01Much like the lions.
49:08They've waited until night to separate one of the calves from the herd.
49:21They've waited until night.
49:23They've waited until night.
49:26They've waited until night.
49:28They've waited until night.
49:34Mum is desperate to lead her son away.
49:40But her night vision is far worse than the lions.
49:44A huge disadvantage.
49:52When lions hunt elephants, they always attack from behind.
49:58Biting the spine to bring them down.
50:10The calf is injured.
50:12The calf is injured.
50:15Now, all the lions need to do is wait.
50:34By morning, her calf is dead.
50:39By morning, her calf is dead.
51:03It's believed that elephants grieve.
