00:06We're getting closer, we're moving nearer to the sun, na, na, na, na, na.
00:13Can I have a croissant?
00:15Yes, you can.
00:16How you doing, buddy?
00:17Jordan, my dad wants to do a croissant.
00:21What do we say to Jordan?
00:22Please.
00:23I'll have Americano with milk, please.
00:26And it's a go cup.
00:27I'm Sarah Keenlyside.
00:28I'm an interior designer based out of Prince Edward County, Ontario,
00:32where my family and I moved to from Toronto about two years ago.
00:35Making it through another day in renovation world,
00:37and child world, and parenting world.
00:39Prince Edward County is only a couple of hours outside of Toronto,
00:42but it feels like a whole different world.
00:45It's got incredible beaches and charming towns
00:48and an amazing community of artists and artisans.
00:51It really is the kind of place that you want to raise a family in.
00:55Once you get a taste of a life like this,
00:58you just can't go back.
00:59So I just want to stay for as long as we can.
01:06You guys are done renovating your house, right?
01:08It never ends with ours.
01:09Yeah.
01:10Right.
01:10How is the old farmhouse going?
01:12It's a big project, Jordan.
01:15Ten months ago, we bought an old farmhouse that's just outside of town.
01:19It's a brick farmhouse built in 1860, but it needed a lot of work.
01:24So we've been working on the renovation for about four months.
01:27Jordan!
01:28Yeah, Louie!
01:29Jordan!
01:29I want to pee!
01:30Good job, Louie!
01:31Good job!
01:32I want to pee!
01:33I'm so proud of you.
01:35SKDS is the design firm that I've just started up here.
01:38I had an established design firm for the last 15 years back in Toronto.
01:43I've done so many renovations for people.
01:46With this fresh start, in this new community, with new housing stock,
01:50I really want to think outside the box.
01:52What's your favourite thing about living in the county?
01:54Playing!
01:55Playing?
01:56I like being here because I like to be here.
02:00Here.
02:01That's the best reason ever.
02:03Mommy, what's your favourite thing about living here?
02:05This.
02:06This season on the county.
02:09One, two, three.
02:10Yellow.
02:11Yellow?
02:11No!
02:12I moved my design firm from the city to Prince Edward County.
02:16So I'm taking on everything from rundown barns.
02:19There's a rotting beam over there.
02:20Ooh, that's carpenter ants.
02:22To tween bedrooms.
02:24Historical renovations.
02:26To a kitchen for a Michelin star chef.
02:28I apologize.
02:28I think we waited until the 11th hour to give you that.
02:3012, 13, 14.
02:32I've brought my closest friends into the chaos.
02:36It's out of my comfort zone.
02:37Yeah.
02:37But I think that's good.
02:38I feel like we're already over budget.
02:40And I also happen to be working on the biggest renovation of my life.
02:44Transforming this 1860's farmhouse from top to bottom.
02:48No turning back now, babe.
02:49I guess not.
02:50And then it's just minimal plaster work over here.
02:52So you see.
02:54Adam started installing the flooring upside down.
02:57So we're gonna have to rip it out.
02:59Are you kidding me?
03:00You have to be pretty bold to approve this.
03:03I am trying to devote all my time to our client work.
03:07I feel like I don't see the boys anymore.
03:09I just kind of feel like I'm failing.
03:13Check out your new room, Adeline.
03:15As challenging as it can feel sometimes.
03:19Oh my goodness.
03:21There is nothing else I would rather be doing.
03:24This is absolutely gorgeous.
03:27And there is definitely no place I would rather be doing it.
03:31Love you guys.
03:32Love you too.
03:45That's all we need.
03:46We just need a whole bunch of animals around to keep our kids busy.
03:49Throw them in the pen, Sarah.
03:52One of my favorite things about living in the county is these amazing community events.
03:57So we're taking our families to one of the best kept secrets here, which is Little John Farms.
04:02They do a farm to table dinner series.
04:04It's also a really great way to connect with your friends and also meet new people around the community.
04:08We're about to start this whole venture together as a design firm.
04:14Couldn't pick two people I love more to do this with.
04:17Aw.
04:18Same.
04:18Kate and Joe were friends of mine first before we decided to start working together.
04:23We've all found ourselves moving to the county for a change of life.
04:27It's just nice to have collaborators in this line of work.
04:31Yeah.
04:31It's lonely by yourself.
04:32It is.
04:33And that's the thing is all of our skill sets are really complimentary.
04:37Kate is our art director and stylist.
04:39I started my career as an actor for many years.
04:42I started to do event design.
04:45I was less interested in auditioning and more interested in design.
04:49I'm self-taught.
04:50So when Sarah had the idea that this could work between the three of us, I was super excited.
04:58I love exploring how other people work and what their process is to get to a finished design.
05:04Jo is our project manager extraordinaire.
05:07She's also an interior designer and has a great eye for color.
05:11Even as a kid going to play dates with friends, I didn't want to see their playroom or play with
05:17their toys.
05:17I wanted tours of their houses.
05:19Worked for large construction companies and then worked for smaller ones until I eventually started running my own.
05:25And then eventually just realized I loved the design work.
05:29Cheers.
05:30Cheers.
05:31SKDS.
05:32Cheers.
05:33To working with your best friends.
05:35Jo's personal style is big color, fun pattern.
05:39And then Kate on the other hand has much more of a historical nod.
05:43I come with a real mid-century modern angle.
05:47I'm not really frilly pinks and stuff like that.
05:49So it's going to be really interesting.
05:50The more projects we do, the more I think we'll be able to hone in on what that SKDS look
05:56really is for our clients.
05:58Actually, I wanted to tell you that I mentioned the event tonight to Sunny and Grant.
06:02Oh, yeah.
06:02Because I was thinking it might be nice for you to meet them as well.
06:06They kind of alluded to the fact that they might be interested in doing some work on their kitchen.
06:11So you're already hustling for work.
06:14Sunny and Grant not only are really cool residents here in Prince Edward County, but Grant is actually a Michelin
06:20star chef.
06:21He owns several restaurants in Toronto.
06:24Sunny's also a chef.
06:25They have two young boys.
06:27They're just really cool people.
06:29Hello.
06:30Hi.
06:31How are you?
06:31Nice to see you.
06:32I thought you might be here.
06:34Hi.
06:34Hi.
06:35I actually mentioned to Sarah what we were talking about the other day about how you were kind of thinking
06:40you might need some work done in your kitchen.
06:42She's been wanting to do the kitchen for like four years, but I feel like we need help.
06:47It would be nice to have you guys check it out, right?
06:49That's great.
06:50I'll give you my number so you guys can let me know and I'll swing by and see what we
06:54can do.
06:55This would be an incredible project to kick off SKDS.
06:59Not only would we be doing a kitchen for a Michelin star chef and his chef wife, but it's also
07:05technically the first time that Joe and Kate and I have run projects together.
07:10We've all independently helped each other out.
07:12But for it to be our first official project as SKDS, like the stakes are pretty high. We can't get
07:17our first one wrong.
07:19Cheers.
07:19Cheers, everybody.
07:24Getting into kitchens was first job and last job and I've never really done anything else, especially in the kitchen.
07:30It's a very male dominated workplace. Sunny was just so badass, you know.
07:36She interviewed for a job. I offered it to her and then she turned me down.
07:40A few years later, she came back asking for the job. So I hired her and then, yeah, we worked
07:45together for a bit and then we went on a date.
07:47We've been together ever since.
07:50The project we really need help with is our own kitchen.
07:54You know, sometimes when it comes to our own space, it's either an afterthought or something that gets pushed to
07:59the sidelines.
08:00Having Sarah come in and just make it happen is so exciting.
08:06I have been known, I've been called to control frequently, especially when it comes to design.
08:11I'm going to learn to just let it go and go with the flow, but it better be awesome.
08:18We better like it, Sarah.
08:26Sunny and Grant live in Cressy, this beautiful area and it's about a half hour drive outside of Picton.
08:32I've never been to their property before, so I'm really excited to see it with my own eyes.
08:37I've seen photos and it looks amazing.
08:40You guys live here?
08:41Welcome, we do.
08:43This is like heaven with the lake. This is gorgeous.
08:47How big is this property?
08:49Five and a half, almost six acres.
08:51Did you guys plant all of this?
08:53We did, yeah.
08:53Almost 10,000 perennials a few years ago.
08:56You've got a greenhouse as well?
08:57Greenhouse, organic garden.
08:59Halfpipe, trampoline.
09:01We like to keep busy.
09:02How long have you guys been living in the county?
09:04We bought the property eight years ago.
09:07Okay.
09:08And then we moved out here full time.
09:10Almost five.
09:11With the dream to retire here.
09:13Yeah.
09:13We sold our house in Toronto.
09:15We had already this property, which we use as short-term rental.
09:18There's two houses, so we moved into one.
09:20But we never really focused on our living space.
09:24Can we go check it out?
09:24Yeah, absolutely.
09:26You know that saying, the shoemaker's children go shoeless, right?
09:29It happens with me as an interior designer.
09:32No surprise that two chefs haven't had the attention to put towards their own kitchen.
09:37This is gorgeous.
09:38I love this with the slate floor and, like, the Persian rugs in the mix.
09:43There's a very European influence, but then there's also this sort of rustic hunting lodge kind of a vibe to
09:50it as well.
09:51Wow.
09:52This is gorgeous.
09:53I love you've got living room, dining room, and kitchen in here.
09:57What is working and what is not working for this kitchen?
10:02I like the layout.
10:03A lot of the cabinetry, a lot of things are wonky.
10:06We just put in this sink.
10:08She's beautiful.
10:09She's beautiful.
10:09But I'll give her a bigger stove.
10:12Okay.
10:14And probably a slightly bigger fridge.
10:17Got it.
10:17Tell me a little bit about these countertops.
10:20Do we love tile countertops?
10:22We inherited this.
10:23We hate it.
10:24We love stone.
10:25We love real stone.
10:26We don't like synthetic stuff.
10:27Okay.
10:27So doing, like, a marble?
10:29Marble.
10:29Okay.
10:30Not too, too gray.
10:31Okay.
10:32So a bit of warmth to it?
10:33Yeah.
10:33I've been blessed before with clients that are just like, we trust you.
10:38Do whatever you want.
10:38I can tell that that's not going to be the case with this project, but that's great.
10:42It's going to keep us on our toes, and all we care about in the end is happy clients.
10:46I can see that you have this overhang here.
10:48Looks like it has the ability to have stools there, but you're not using it that way.
10:53Yeah, we don't use it, so we're kind of flexible.
10:55We'll lose that to create a now built-in banquette that's probably an L-shape.
11:00I love that idea.
11:01So I noticed you do have quite a bit of sort of cool found storage, which is nice.
11:06Can I check this out?
11:07Yeah, absolutely.
11:08We're big into antiques and just kind of, you know, old stuff.
11:11We have this family heirloom dining table, so we want to keep that.
11:14Cool.
11:15Ideally.
11:15We love it.
11:16Like the patina, the old pine, right?
11:19Those chairs were like super awesome vintage, great condition two years ago when we bought
11:25them, and now they're just ripped and stained.
11:27These chairs are to die for.
11:29Just unfortunately, it looks like they died.
11:32These original floorboards are amazing.
11:35They look great.
11:36Are we going to celebrate the patina of the floors, or do you want this refinished?
11:41We really like this color, you know, kind of.
11:44The kind of natural color that comes through.
11:46Oh, yeah, yeah.
11:46So more of like an oiled, natural pine finish.
11:49Yeah.
11:50Vibe-wise, style-wise, let's really make sure that I'm on the right track with that.
11:54You know, old world Europe, like south of France, kind of.
11:57You know when you go to Europe and you're like, I wish I lived somewhere like this.
12:01You don't.
12:02Yeah.
12:03That's right.
12:04So I guess lastly, let's talk budget and timeline.
12:08So how much are you guys thinking to spend for this reno?
12:12We're hoping to be in the 60, 70 range.
12:14Okay.
12:15We'd like to get it done before the winter.
12:18Yes.
12:19So.
12:19That will happen.
12:20Thank you so much for trusting me and the team with this.
12:23This is going to be great.
12:24All right.
12:24Well, I'm going to take some measurements and then draw this up.
12:27Let's get started.
12:28Cool.
12:28Okay.
12:28For our first project with SKDS to be a property like this for cool clients, I'm pumped.
12:37Now, can the three of us pull off this very unique design on time, on budget?
12:44I guess we'll have to wait and see.
12:46Let's see.
12:47Let's see.
12:48Let's see.
12:49Let's see.
12:52Let's see.
12:53Let's see.
12:54Yeah, yeah.
12:55You got to play your opposition.
12:58Not too shabby, view-wise.
13:01So this is our first official Sarah Keenly Side Design Studio trifecta.
13:07I need us to like pinky swear if this doesn't work out the cool friendship has to last okay
13:15Pinky swear all right triple pinky trifecta. I'm like, I don't know guys
13:24Joe and Kate and I have already been here to take all of our measurements. We've done the base plans
13:28But today is our first day being in the space together and really hashing out the final details before we
13:34start demo tomorrow
13:35Oh man, they just exude cool. It's almost like their style is the antithesis of a design firm design
13:43Exactly. No, you're totally right with that Kate. There's a lot of rules that we're breaking here in this open
13:49concept space
13:50It's I guess mixing eras. I've always broken that rule. I love a good mid-century modern
13:56Hit in a historical home, but this we're like almost adding too many different styles into one space
14:02I'm just trying to distill what we're going for here
14:05Classic European country home and then we're also going to incorporate some mid-century modern hits as well
14:13Yeah, what we're doing big picture is
14:16Buying them more space in this open concept room the kitchen is staying in
14:23The C shape we're just gutting this and we're starting from scratch
14:26We're upgrading them to a 36 inch range induction
14:29We'll do a concealed range hood above
14:32We're gonna keep the sink over here centering that more on the window and just having something that's a better
14:38scale will work out great
14:39Keep the fridge location where it is and then the big sort of wild card that we can't design in
14:46that we have to find
14:47Ideally is our open storage here open shelves or do we need some with glass?
14:53Kate this is where I'd want to lean on you
14:55Sunny also made a really clear point of like this is the kind of furniture that she loves having
15:00She doesn't want it all to be like matching cabinetry
15:03So if you want to put that on your to-do list sure
15:05Over here, we've got lots of furniture to work with so we are gonna keep this table
15:10Our design has lost the overhang, but we're gonna design in a L-shaped built-in bench
15:17Yeah
15:17That way this table will have its permanent resting place
15:21It can expand and contract out but because we know where it lands
15:24We can have a nice pendant light over here
15:27And then over here we're keeping a lounge space, right?
15:31Maybe we pivot on these chairs a little instead of getting new ones
15:34Maybe we're reupholstering
15:35Maybe the ottoman
15:36Yeah
15:37So we've got this European old world looking range
15:41But plot twist
15:43Sunny has selected this retro mint green fridge
15:47This is that look that designers don't usually do
15:52Mint green and retro doesn't really naturally fit with old world European
15:58Until frankly we physically can see this fridge and like color match it
16:03We can't really figure out our paint color for our cabinetry
16:06Without actually knowing the exact shade of the fridge
16:10I think going slightly more olive
16:12As much as it's not a match, it looks a bit more intentional
16:16We've got this powder pink ceiling
16:19Yeah
16:19So let's color match that to see if we want to keep it the pink
16:22But I do like it
16:23I like it too
16:24Yeah
16:25This is like the anti-designer's design
16:29You know?
16:30If we pull it off, it's going to look so frickin' cool
16:34Mm-hmm
16:34If we don't pull it off, it's going to look like
16:38What were they thinking?
16:39Yeah
16:39So no pressure, but all the pressure
16:41Great
16:42Let's get at it
16:51Thanks so much, Laura, for being here and helping with this
16:54No problem
16:55Let's move some of this furniture out of the way
16:57And then we will get to ripping the cabinets
17:04Woo!
17:05This is pretty familiar to me, but I don't normally take on the physical act of demolition myself
17:11Generally, I hire the individual trades to do that
17:14But I ran my own construction company for seven plus years
17:19I've been in the construction field for many more than that
17:22So it's nothing new for me
17:26Oh, hey
17:28I'm good
17:28How are you, Grant?
17:32Um, that's totally up to you
17:37It's okay, we can pivot
17:39We can pivot
17:40I mean, this will likely be more than what we budgeted for
17:44Because we just budgeted for a stand and finish
17:45But, yeah, okay
17:47Um, great, yeah, send me what you've got
17:49And then we'll go from there
17:52Yeah, Grant just called and wants to do new flooring
17:58He's found a floor that could work
18:01We've got to see if the flooring guy, Miles, can fit this in
18:05And it doesn't delay anything further
18:16Starting up the design firm is just one of the many things I have on my plate right now
18:22So whenever I have some time, I'm working on my 150-year-old farmhouse renovation
18:27I don't think I'm ever going to get tired of driving up to this house
18:31No
18:32I kind of saw me taking on the design of our own home as getting my feet wet here
18:38And I love the fact that on my own project, on my own dime
18:42I can be meeting all the trades, making these connections
18:44We're going to grow old here
18:46I know, and our boys are going to grow up here
18:48And there's something to be said about a forever home
18:51We've been working on the renovations for several months now
18:54There's been a lot going on
18:57We essentially raised the entire roof on the backside of the house
19:01It was all knob and tube
19:02We had to replace all the electrical
19:03All new plumbing
19:04And a lot of floor re-leveling
19:07It's been a real slog
19:09But at least now I can start doing the pretty part of the design
19:12You know, I come here most days after the workers are gone
19:16And I'll stand in our living room or our kids' bedrooms
19:19I can see the future
19:20I can see them falling down these stairs
19:22You know?
19:23I don't, you know, it's not always positive
19:24But I can see it
19:25But what's your overall design sense?
19:28What's the big picture?
19:29I see a real mix of like mid-century modern
19:32More modern furniture in a traditional space
19:35So it doesn't feel like a museum
19:36I want to pay homage to the history and the traditional detailing of this Victorian farmhouse
19:43But inject fresh family energy into it
19:47And when we photograph it, hopefully it just attracts more of that kind of work
19:52This is my dream design style
19:54If you want it, it's the easiest thing for me to do
19:56And a king-sized bed, I imagine
19:58We are upgrading to a king-sized bed
20:00We have reached that point in our adult lives
20:02I know
20:03We're like, when we started, we're like
20:05From double to queen
20:06And now it's like a double, then queen
20:08And now we're like, I just need to sleep
20:10The only way to keep our home renovation moving forward
20:14Is sort of to do it in sections
20:16Because I need to leave room for client projects
20:19So I'll be tackling it room by room over the next few months
20:22But my first priority is to figure out
20:25How we're going to finish the exterior parts of the house that we've restructured
20:28You do have to make them look beautiful from the outside
20:30And for that, I want to use an authentic, real wood siding
20:34Joe's got Sonny and Grant's kitchen under control
20:37So I'm carving out a little bit of time for my own project
20:39And picking up some samples
20:41Hey, Bob
20:42Hey, Sarah, how you doing?
20:43I'm good
20:43I got a call from Kelly
20:45And she said that my Maybach samples are ready
20:47They are, definitely
20:48I'm really excited to see this color sample
20:51I mean, I know this color so well
20:52I use it so often that I kind of know it's going to be perfect
20:55This is like my favorite shade of blacky blue
20:58It's not black, it's not navy blue
21:00It's blacky blue
21:01By the way, our Maybach rep is here today
21:03Would you like to meet him?
21:04Like right now?
21:05Yeah
21:05Oh yeah, for sure
21:06It's right over here
21:07I have some questions before I place this order actually
21:11Hello
21:11Hi there
21:12This is very convenient, I'm Sarah
21:14Hi Sarah, I'm Adam, nice to meet you
21:15Nice to meet you, Adam
21:15I just got my color match samples that showed up today
21:18So the brushed modern in the custom color for the first floor
21:22Which is going to be our mudroom and our family room around the back
21:27And then the whole second floor is getting shingles
21:29Love that
21:30Yeah
21:30It's a great accent and I see you chose a custom color
21:32Yeah, well I was looking at the Express colors
21:35But I was concerned that the black or the charcoal would look too stark against the old orange brick
21:40Okay, that's one of the big advantages of going with a wood siding is that you can have any color
21:45that you want
21:45So basically we have our Express
21:47That program represents our most popular colors and profiles that we sell in all the Canadian markets
21:52And then we have custom colors as well, we have a 90 color Maybach custom chart
21:56Yeah
21:56But then you're not limited to that, you can go outside of that chart and you can match that
22:00Break it to me easy
22:01Have I shot myself in the foot by going with a custom color?
22:05Like what's the up charge for something like that?
22:07There's no up charge for that
22:09The same price is applied to the 90 colors that we carry or any other custom
22:12Sort of one price for all customs
22:14And it's all made in Canada, right?
22:16It's all made in Canada, yep
22:17With responsibly sourced materials that are all from Canada
22:20Well, this is great
22:21I'll send you guys some photos when it's done
22:23Sounds great
22:23Okay, good luck
22:25Hi!
22:27Hello!
22:29Fancy seeing you here
22:31I know
22:31How are you doing here?
22:32I thought you were demoing up at Cressy
22:34Yes, I was
22:35And then I get a call from them
22:38They don't want to refinish those pine floors
22:41I thought that was like a done deal
22:42Yeah, so did I
22:43It's technically not too late
22:45I will give him that
22:46I know
22:46But then what's the solution?
22:48Not happening
22:48Grant found flooring
22:49Like three quarter inch
22:51Like white oak unfinished flooring
22:53Today I've been chatting with Miles
22:55Then chatting with Grant
22:56Who's Miles again?
22:56He's the floor guy
22:57I'm here just grabbing some 3-8 plywood for him
23:00Cause he's gonna lay that down first
23:01On top of the old pine
23:02Oh, you really are on it?
23:04I'm on it
23:04And then he's sanding and finishing it
23:06Like he would the existing floors
23:07It like gets about $4,000
23:10And do Grant and Sonny know that that's something
23:12They have to like bump their budget by?
23:14This is a client instigated change
23:16Yes
23:16And it is a paid for pivot
23:17A paid for pivot
23:19I like it
23:20Yeah
23:20Okay
23:20Grant has mentioned to me
23:22That he goes with his gut
23:23When he's renovating his restaurants
23:25And when he's like creating these spaces and stuff
23:28Which is totally fine
23:29I mean Sonny and Grant are our clients
23:31I just really want to keep it on budget and on time
23:34And I also don't want to make some decisions that don't pivot well
23:36Sometimes I feel the sun
23:41Sometimes I turn to the core
23:44Sonny and Grant know their way around beautiful kitchens
23:48Probably throughout the world frankly
23:51So when they're interacting with their kitchen daily
23:54I want it to have these beautiful details
23:56That they will really appreciate
23:58I'm going to be finalizing cabinetry today
24:00We've got the kitchen layout
24:02Everything is exactly where it needs to be
24:04But now it's about door styles
24:05That will give it that old world feel
24:08The most logical place to go cabinetry style wise
24:12Is actually with a face frame
24:14This is very old fashioned
24:16Because it's the way kitchen cabinets used to be made
24:18You've got that exposed frame around all of your cabinets
24:22And so what we're thinking of doing is actually a groove detail
24:26In the door fronts themselves
24:28Which again is an old world detailing style
24:32Color TBD
24:34We're meshing it also with the retro vibe
24:37Of this fridge that's going to be showing up
24:40Honestly until that thing shows up
24:42I'm not sure any of this is the right decision
24:44That being said
24:46Face frame is definitely the right decision for this kitchen
24:56Floors are done
24:57Yes
24:58And can we go in there?
24:59I think we should just take a peek
25:01Okay
25:01It's the 48 hour period
25:04Yeah
25:04Which means socks but not boots
25:05Exactly
25:08Oh
25:09Mm-hmm
25:10I love that they look more weathered
25:12It actually works with the house better
25:14It matches the imperfect nature of the boards on the wall
25:18And the ceiling and everything
25:19Yeah and the fridge is here
25:20So we should go check it out
25:22Yeah
25:23This elusive fridge that we don't know exactly the color of mint that it is
25:28We have been waiting for this
25:30Because we need to nail down this cabinetry color
25:33Aha
25:34Thank you for showing up
25:36It's here
25:37Joe has this mill worker
25:38And he is like chomping at the bit to get this paint color
25:43Like that's on us
25:44Whoa
25:46Oh that's nice
25:47French doors
25:49Yeah
25:49Oh we were kind of off with our assumption
25:52This one's quite a bit yellow
25:53Got a bit more green to it doesn't it
25:55Yeah
25:55Right? And yellow
25:56It's yellower
25:58The colors that we were sort of making work were off of that
26:01Oh god
26:02That's really bad
26:03That's really bad
26:04That's really bad
26:05Is this what we were thinking for cabinetry?
26:07Yeah
26:07Ick
26:13Oh that's really bad
26:15Yeah
26:16This is why we had to wait
26:17Because we were actually embarrassingly way off
26:21When it came to the cabinet color
26:23Okay
26:23So let's go back into the archives
26:25This is where we have to start going more retro
26:29What's that?
26:30That one
26:32Can I see what that looks like just as a single?
26:36That's how we do a green kitchen with this mint
26:39I just got goosebumps
26:41Oh you did?
26:42Yeah
26:43Now we've nailed down our cabinetry color
26:45Which means we can pick our upholstery colors
26:47We've got these beautiful leather chairs
26:49That we're going to have reupholstered for Grant
26:51We also have to pick the ottoman that's going to sit between them
26:54We want to have a lot of fun with that
26:56This is really Kate's world
26:57And what she really pushes forward for us
26:59We want to loop her in with where we're landing
27:01And make sure that she's on board
27:03So that she can run with that
27:05Oh so let's go
27:08To our secret place
27:10That we used to know
27:12I'm falling in love
27:14Hi Conoboy
27:15How are you?
27:16I'm at the stage where I let myself in now
27:19Conoboy is a very, very skilled seamstress
27:22Pretty much every banquette you might sit on in the county at a restaurant
27:26Was probably made by Conoboy
27:29She's going to handle the ottoman
27:30And then our banquette cushion
27:33For the ottoman
27:34How do you feel about this fabric?
27:36I love that fabric
27:37It's gorgeous, isn't it?
27:39Maybe we do the blue piping on this fabric for the banquette
27:43What is the other thing I need to pick?
27:46So you have the fabric, you have the piping
27:47Foam
27:48But for a banquette I would probably go higher density
27:50Because you don't want your banquette to sag
27:53No
27:53And do you think that we need to upholster the ottoman?
27:57Slip cover
27:57Oh
27:58And then you can wash it or get it dry cleaned
28:01Okay, great
28:02So that would sit right down
28:03A couple of weeks
28:05Do you think it's possible?
28:06Yeah, okay
28:07We can do that
28:08Thank you
28:09I'll see you in a couple weeks
28:10Okay
28:10Thanks Conoboy
28:11See you later
28:12See you later
28:22Hey Frank
28:23Here comes the boss
28:24Great news, my samples came in
28:26Oh, for the siding?
28:27Yeah, yeah, yeah
28:27Let's take them up
28:28Oh, nice, nice, nice
28:28Here was our original option
28:30Right
28:31That's the stock one that they have
28:32Yeah
28:32I got the custom colour samples
28:35They just showed up
28:36Ooh, look at that
28:36It's almost a black
28:38It's like a nice inky black
28:39Yep
28:39And I love the way this plays off the red brick
28:42Yes, it does
28:43It does
28:43You're right
28:44And then also like greenery against this dark colour
28:46True
28:46And
28:47What's that?
28:48Oh, cedar shakes
28:49The cedar shakes for up top
28:50So when it comes to adding extensions onto traditional homes
28:54You can go super modern
28:56And I love that juxtaposition against a traditional space
28:59But this house wasn't asking for that
29:01So as much as I'm doing a modern horizontal siding on the bottom areas of our extensions
29:06The cedar shake is a real nod to the heritage of the home
29:10And it's something that you would have seen on a home of this era
29:13Now that I know these samples work perfectly with the house, I can put the order in
29:17We just need to wait for some new windows to be installed
29:19And then we can finally get this exterior finished
29:31Cabinets are going in, which is such a fun time in kitchen renovations
29:35You don't have to use your imagination anymore
29:38Usually you're proved right that you've picked the right thing
29:41Hey, Jo
29:43Hi
29:44Love kitchens going in
29:47I know
29:47So good, babe
29:48They're almost done
29:49We made the right call with this cabinet colour
29:51Who's Mike?
29:53That's me
29:53Mike, hi, I'm Sarah
29:54Sarah, good to meet you
29:55Nice to meet you
29:56I apologise, I think we waited until the 11th hour to give you that laugh
29:59The 11th hour, the 12th, 13th, 14th
30:01We do everything for Jo though
30:03See, we're only as good as our trades, honestly
30:06Exactly
30:06That's so true
30:07Face frame makes it look more French
30:09Mm-hmm
30:10The V groove gives it a bit more of like a country farmhouse vibe
30:13Yep
30:14Um
30:18Something isn't sitting right
30:22What?
30:24I'm happy to be wrong and I would like to be wrong
30:27But this beautiful pink ceiling colour that we've always really loved in this space
30:33Does it look Easter egg-y?
30:36It looks like the Easter bunny came in here and threw up all over the place
30:42I love the warm white on the walls
30:47That's perfect
30:48If we did something just as simple as that
30:51It'll just read as a neutral
30:53We budgeted for touch-ups
30:55I think we budgeted around $700 for the paint touch-ups
30:59Got it
30:59We'd probably be $2,000
31:02There is no way that we can leave the ceiling pink like this
31:08SKDS is just gonna fall on the sword for this one
31:11We'll take care of the paint and the labour to redo it
31:14I just really am putting pressure on this project, I think
31:17Because I want it to be a real example of the kind of work that our design firm can do
31:23Ugh, Easter eggs
31:34Now that the cabinetry's in, our banquet is in, the kitchen's almost complete
31:39We're waiting for appliances coming soon and fixtures
31:42The only thing that's a bit of a wild card right now
31:45Is that Kate is still looking for that open cabinet
31:49That we want to have on top of the corner of that peninsula
31:52Sonny and Grant love fun vintage pieces
31:55And we want something with character that only a vintage piece can give
31:59I have been searching high and low for this cabinet
32:02I spend a lot of time on online marketplaces
32:06And lo and behold, the perfect antique cabinet pops up on my phone
32:12So who has a car bag enough that I can fit these two cabinets in?
32:15Jo
32:15Oh good, her car's here
32:16Okay, okay, okay, okay
32:18I just got an alert from an online marketplace
32:20You have to see these cabinets, Jo
32:22Oh, thank you
32:23I'm here, I'm here, I'm here
32:24Okay
32:25Ooh, for Sonny and Grant
32:26Yes, yes
32:27Those are so perfect
32:28Yeah
32:28Why are you, like, out of breath?
32:31I think we got a strike while the iron is hot, Jo
32:33Uh, I don't think two will fit in my car
32:37Oh, yeah, probably not
32:38You wanna borrow the car
32:39Could I borrow your car?
32:41Could I borrow your car?
32:41Yeah, you can borrow the car
32:42Okay, that would be great
32:43Look at it, it's just perfect
32:45Oh yeah, I love them
32:46You gotta act fast
32:47Somebody else will snatch them up
32:49No, no, I gotta act now
32:50Is actually what I gotta do
32:51Okay
32:52Ooh, baby
32:53I love driving your car
32:55Uh
32:55Uh
32:56Oh, jeez, yeah, sorry
33:08The kitchen is poppin'
33:11The countertops have gone in
33:12The ceiling's been painted
33:14We needed this progress
33:17Wow, hi
33:19Hello
33:19You are the famous Anton
33:21Mm-hmm
33:21Sarah?
33:22Yes
33:23I've heard so much about you
33:24This is looking so good
33:26The Cuara marble's in
33:28Mm-hmm
33:29That looks pretty
33:29Guys
33:30This is a tough look to pull off
33:32Jury's still out, but so far
33:33Everything is looking amazing
33:34I can envision it
33:35I can see it
33:36Like, what a difference paint can make
33:38I'm really happy with our color choice
33:40It's so subtle
33:41So subtle
33:41Oh, I love it
33:42Oh, dear
33:43It's Kate
33:44Kate
33:45Kate driving a vehicle
33:47Of course
33:48That is not her own
33:49Oh my gosh
33:50Yeah
33:51Guys
33:52Ooh
33:53I got her
33:55You are coming in hot, girl
33:57Oh, is it gonna fit?
33:58Let's do it
33:59Meet me over here
33:59It's pretty tight, actually
34:00Oh my god
34:01Anton, Anton, everything is fine
34:03Actually, nobody asked you
34:04Yeah, that's right
34:05Oh, yeah, sorry
34:06Ooh
34:08Is it fitting?
34:13Is it fitting?
34:15Just getting it past this outlet
34:18Oh
34:19It fits, guys
34:19That is totally fitting
34:21Too close for comfort
34:22I'm really feeling great about how this is all coming together
34:27This has been a tough one
34:29I mean, Joe and Kate and I have always helped each other out in the past
34:32But never as a proper design firm
34:35And I really love seeing how all of our expertise are really complementing each other
34:40I knew that was gonna happen
34:42But I would like to say, for the record, I was right
34:44It looks like it was custom made
34:48You never get that lucky on vintage finds
34:50Well, we got that lucky, Sarah
34:51Remember the kind of 80s chandelier that was here?
34:56So Sunny's actually in her workshop right now doing some work on that
35:00Because we think it can be repurposed as a chandelier over the dining room tape
35:04Sunny's on the property right now?
35:05Yeah
35:05I didn't even know that she was here
35:07Yeah
35:07Sunny's a welder and it would be such a missed opportunity
35:11If we couldn't use her skill set for a cool project in this kitchen
35:16I just wanna make sure that her vision for the light over the kitchen table
35:19Is gonna work with what the ladies and I have been working towards
35:23Hello
35:24Hi, what's up?
35:25Didn't want to interrupt you
35:27You're the freaking coolest woman I know, oh my God
35:29Thank you
35:30When did you get into welding again?
35:32When I sort of started working, helping Grant with the restaurant
35:36I kept finding myself tiling
35:38I hated tiling
35:40And I was like, I need a new trade
35:42Kate mentioned that you were working on a cool light for the kitchen
35:45Yeah, well, we had the old one
35:48The light that I really wanted was like, $2,000
35:51When I can't afford it, I can kind of figure it with knockoff versions sometimes
35:55I'm the same, but my DIY skills only go so far
35:59They don't usually involve welding
36:01So you'll take the five gang off
36:04Exactly
36:04Put it on here
36:06Yes
36:06You're like Dr. Frankensteining
36:09Kind of, yeah
36:10The light
36:11So I had these like mirror pieces and they would just sort of go around
36:18Like just hang there
36:20Yeah
36:20That instantly is more mid-century and less 80s, right?
36:24Yeah
36:24This direction of a light will totally work in the new kitchen
36:28Awesome
36:28Kitchen's coming along
36:30Thanks for showing me
36:31Okay, see you later
36:32Something that I'm finding is very common in the county
36:34Is that because life's a bit slower out here
36:38You have more time to work on your hobbies
36:40On your interests
36:41It's a real sense of community
36:43And it's a very creative community
36:45And Sunny is a perfect example of that
36:47I'm finding that myself
36:49I'm really hoping I eventually get back into painting
36:51Like painting pictures, not walls
36:54Because I'm over my wall painting years
36:56I outsource that now
36:58You said we changed, we're the same somehow
37:01Cause we're leaving mine now
37:03Don't ever try and bring us down
37:08Joe and Kate and I are at Sunny and Grants today
37:11We are styling their space
37:13This is where we're really gonna see if our eclectic retro French country kitchen
37:20Has really pulled its look together
37:23Or if we've missed the mark
37:24Let me see this thing
37:27Oh, she's beautiful
37:29On styling day, our roles are a little less defined
37:32I mean, Joe is still on top of the trades
37:34That are gonna be coming in and finishing off things today
37:36And Backsplash is happening later today as well
37:39Okay
37:39And plumbing
37:40It's all gonna come together
37:42It's a little bit of an adjustment to county timelines
37:44Yep
37:45This is a good thing for us to learn
37:47Leave a buffer
37:48For Kate, she's kind of the boss of these days
37:51Cause she knows everything that we have to work with
37:53And then my role on these days, I guess we'll see
37:56This is our first time working together
37:58But I'm pretty good at keeping the big picture locked in
38:03I think best laid plans would be for us to figure out big picture of where we're putting everything
38:09And then once the Backsplash is in later
38:10I can do any of the final touches on the counters
38:13Yeah
38:13But if we have everything else up, we're golden
38:15Perfect
38:17Oh, Kate
38:18Well, that's Conaboy's handiwork
38:20I just sent the measurements
38:21This is marine-grade fabric
38:24So the spaghetti sauce is just gonna slide right off
38:27Oh, that's nice
38:29The velvet fabric
38:31I love that little detail
38:33It's pulling in the same fabric on the ottoman
38:35This ottoman is holding together the entire space
38:40All of the colours that we're using within this entire open concept space are celebrated within that
38:47Sunny and Grant have provided a few amazing pieces for us to incorporate
38:52This amazing cupboard that is so weird but so cool that Grant found online
38:57This beautiful buffet with the marble top is exactly what this kitchen needs to give it that old world European
39:05feel
39:05I picked up some handles
39:08They're unlockered brass so they'll patina
39:11Oh, those are cute
39:13Oh, nice
39:13This is definitely our interpretation of what they have asked for
39:20I think it's looking amazing but Grant is the first to say he's hard to please
39:26And he changes his mind a lot
39:28So I guess we'll see
39:29Light me up, let me see your fire
39:34Light me up, let me see your fire
39:38Hey guys
39:39Hi
39:40Are you ready?
39:42We're ready
39:42You guys have been so patient
39:43You've peaked
39:43But not in the last few days, right?
39:46Not in a while
39:46How are you feeling?
39:47I'm a little bit nervous now
39:49Just because it's like officially time
39:51But I'm really excited for you guys to see your new kitchen
39:54We're ready, we're ready
39:54Yeah, alright
39:55Let's do it
39:56See you in the chair, ready?
39:58Whoa
40:05Wow
40:06It looks amazing
40:09Very good
40:10Yeah?
40:11Yeah, yeah
40:11Yeah, yeah, yeah
40:19It feels so much bigger
40:20And brighter
40:21It's so bright in here
40:23I didn't even notice the floors at first, look at that
40:26There's a lot, there's a lot going on
40:28Oh yeah
40:28Yeah
40:28It doesn't bounce
40:29Yeah
40:30My chairs
40:31Love this fabric
40:33Isn't it cool?
40:34Did you refinish the wood?
40:35We did
40:36Wow
40:37We did
40:37They look so rich and luxurious
40:40I know
40:41This seating area was always so great in front of the fireplace
40:44We just gave everything a little bit of a facelift
40:48Great
40:49Wow
40:50Oh, you got your stove
40:57Look how big it is
40:58Wow
40:58Wow
40:59Wow
41:00Oh my God, look at it
41:01The puppies
41:02Our doggies
41:03For your spices
41:04Love this color too
41:05This is awesome
41:05Beautiful
41:07Fridge is amazing
41:08Fridge is amazing
41:08Well, and that was like the jumping off point, right?
41:10Yeah
41:10Is that retro mint fridge that you loved?
41:13That's where we started with the colors of the cabinetry and everything
41:16And the gorgeous range that is like dream range
41:21Well, I was always meant to have a 36 inch stair
41:23You were
41:24If anyone in the county should have one, it's the two of you
41:27Is the old stove still around so I could say goodbye to it?
41:30Yeah, yeah, yes
41:31Yeah, I figured we could have like a seance or something for it
41:34I never got to say goodbye to it
41:37Because you used to have the full depth plus the overhang
41:41Yeah
41:41And so we've really taken advantage of all that space
41:44And then also by using the banquette up against the back of the peninsula
41:48It's pulled the dining room over more
41:51And then we've also zoned that with the lighting above
41:54Everything has its place now
41:56Yeah
41:56And it's efficiently used
41:58Everywhere feels like it has a more appropriate space
42:00Less big cabinetry, you know, over towering and stuff
42:03Nice, voluptuous kind of sturdy fabric too, eh? Look at that
42:08Oh, yeah!
42:10We picked up on that blue
42:11Yeah
42:12With this piping which works so well with these great chairs that you have
42:16A great way of pulling all these very different elements together
42:20Beautiful, I love this too
42:22You nailed it
42:23It's such a perfect addition there
42:25Yeah
42:26And it doesn't feel like brand new open shelves
42:28Yeah, it's perfect
42:30Yeah
42:30Things that you use all the time leave them up
42:32Things that you just use once in a while
42:34Yeah
42:34That you don't want dust to get to
42:36It's enclosed
42:37So good
42:38And that's your chandelier?
42:40Yeah
42:40Yeah
42:40I love the very unexpected nature of it
42:44And it's so great to repurpose something like that
42:47Yeah, it looks good
42:49Yeah
42:49It feels very European, right? Like, you know
42:51This is almost like a marriage of two very different styles within one space
42:56And it's frickin' awesome
42:59Yeah, normally I'm pretty critical
43:01Yeah
43:02You know, and I'd always, you know, walk into something like, gotta change that, change that
43:06I can't, I can't see anything to change
43:08Are you kidding me?
43:10No, that's it
43:10No
43:10Thank you, chef
43:12Yeah
43:15This is not a look that's for everyone
43:17But it's a look that is tailored specifically to Sonny and Grant
43:21And the fact that we pulled it off for them
43:25Just is like exactly what we needed for our first project
43:29Good word will travel fast
43:31And it's exactly the momentum we need to get started this season
