00:17:36If God willing, I hope I make it to the top 20
00:17:39This is too hard
00:17:43It's difficult
00:17:44People really stepped it up to, you know, superstar level
00:17:47Everyone is amazing
00:17:49Sometimes before you can watch someone fly
00:17:52You have to let them hit rock bottom
00:18:01Hello, everybody
00:18:02My name is Braden Rumfelt
00:18:04I'm 22 years old
00:18:05And I'm from Murphy, North Carolina
00:18:07I was standing by my window
00:18:13On a cold and cloudy day
00:18:17When I was a baby
00:18:19My dad would sit musical instruments
00:18:22At the bottom of our cribs
00:18:24And he thought, like, you know
00:18:25That was going to give us, like, these abilities
00:18:27Right
00:18:27Which it might have
00:18:28Who knows
00:18:29Will the circle be unbroken?
00:18:34Growing up in a family where it's cool to sing
00:18:37You know, that's got me to this point
00:18:39If it weren't for them, I wouldn't be here
00:18:41Much less going to Hawaii
00:18:44For you to get here is, um, it's powerful
00:18:49You let your light shine before the world
00:18:53In the sky, Lord, in the sky
00:19:05Some people live for the fortune
00:19:10Some people live just for the fame
00:19:15Okay
00:19:16Okay
00:19:18All right
00:19:18Some people think that the physical things define what's within
00:19:27And I've been there before
00:19:32And that life's so poor
00:19:35So full of the superficial
00:19:39And I'm sure
00:19:40And some people want it all
00:19:44But I don't want nothing at all
00:19:47If it ain't you, baby
00:19:50If I ain't got you, baby
00:19:53Some people want time to reach
00:19:56Some just want everything
00:19:59But everything, but everything means nothing
00:20:02If I ain't got you
00:20:05Ooh, yeah
00:20:09Ooh, yeah
00:20:10Ooh, ooh
00:20:13Ooh
00:20:14Ooh
00:20:14Sing it
00:20:15If I ain't got you, you, you
00:20:18Some people want it all
00:20:21But I don't want nothing at all
00:20:24If it ain't you, baby
00:20:28If it ain't you, baby
00:20:29If I ain't got you, baby
00:20:31And some people want time to reach
00:20:34Some just want everything
00:20:37But everything means nothing
00:20:41If I ain't got you
00:20:50All right, all right, all right
00:20:53Hi, Maddie
00:20:54Hi, Maddie
00:20:55Thank you
00:21:00Kids singing
00:21:01I feel like I just had the biggest smile on my face the whole time
00:21:07Your voice is just velvety and big
00:21:11You've got a lot of power in there
00:21:13And in all the right places
00:21:15Thank you
00:21:15It's good to see y'all again
00:21:16You're good
00:21:19Thank you, Maddie
00:21:20Love you, Maddie
00:21:21You know what?
00:21:22Seeing his family and the connection is exactly
00:21:25That's exactly what I wanted to see
00:21:26It was that
00:21:27I thought he had really great control and power to his voice
00:21:31But he hit a couple of rough notes
00:21:33Here we go
00:21:36Performing in front of the editor of Rolling Stone
00:21:39Geez Louise
00:21:40There's so many other eyes on us who get a say in our future
00:21:44It's a little frightening
00:21:46Oh, come on, Bearfoot
00:21:50I'm Hannah Harper from Southeast Missouri
00:21:52And I'm going to sing a country classic that my grandpa used to sing
00:21:54To honor his musical legacy
00:21:56I'm really excited about the Ohana Round to have the chance to honor my grandpa
00:22:00He was a patriarch
00:22:01So many branches of talented people that came from him
00:22:05He played music until the day he died
00:22:07Good music that we can all relate to as a family
00:22:11And we all play together at it and everybody likes it
00:22:13Bluegrass and gospel
00:22:15That will keep us together
00:22:17The legacy that he left was such a strong impression on my life
00:22:21I want to do the same for my kids
00:22:24I wish my grandpa was here to hear it
00:22:25My grandma's going to be here and she's going to be so thrilled
00:22:27Because it was his favorite song
00:22:29I know your life
00:22:34On earth was troubled
00:22:39And only you could know the pain
00:22:46You weren't afraid to face the devil
00:22:55You were no stranger to the rain
00:23:05Go rest high on that mountain
00:23:13Son, your work on earth is done
00:23:22Come to heaven
00:23:27Come to heaven
00:23:27Come to heaven
00:23:28Come to heaven
00:23:28Come to heaven
00:23:29Come to heaven
00:23:29Come to heaven
00:23:30Come to heaven
00:23:31Come to heaven
00:23:31Come to heaven
00:23:31Come to heaven
00:23:33Come to heaven
00:23:35Come to heaven
00:23:36Come to heaven
00:23:37Come to heaven
00:23:51The work on earth is done
00:23:56Go to heaven
00:24:00There shall be love for the Father
00:24:10And the Son
00:24:27Gosh, there are so many parallels with your voice
00:24:31And Dolly and just, it's just so beautifully country
00:24:36But just remember that key that you got to at the end
00:24:38And really live in that space
00:24:40Because your voice really opened up there
00:24:42You've got the goods
00:24:43And that was, your voice is so beautiful to me
00:24:46Appreciate it, thank you
00:24:48You've got that straight, authentic mountain voice, boy
00:24:53You can definitely see that she was missing something
00:24:56Because she usually plays the guitar
00:24:58But, I don't know, I think she really delivered it
00:25:00And she felt like she was herself
00:25:02I mean, obviously everybody can sing
00:25:04Because they're here
00:25:05But there's going to only be a handful
00:25:07That can make it to that star quality, you know
00:25:10Say that again, what did you just say?
00:25:12No, what did you just say? It was important
00:25:14I said, would you go for the best singer
00:25:17Or would you go for someone
00:25:18Who you know would sell tickets
00:25:20Has a look and has a boast
00:25:22These are the questions we have to ask ourselves
00:25:31Hi guys
00:25:33My name is Genevieve Hayward
00:25:35Today I will be singing your song by Elton John
00:25:37I picked this song today
00:25:39Because the last time that my father was in Hawaii
00:25:42He was on leave from Vietnam
00:25:45Give it up for my dad
00:25:46Thank you for your service, Dan
00:25:49If I could give you the world, I would
00:25:52But for right now, I'm just going to start with a song
00:25:54Aww
00:25:59It's a little bit funny
00:26:03This feeling inside
00:26:07I'm not one of those who can
00:26:11Easily hide
00:26:14I don't have much money
00:26:17But boy, if I did
00:26:21I'd buy a big house where
00:26:25We both could live
00:26:31If I could live
00:26:33If I could live
00:26:34I can't live
00:26:37Or a man
00:26:39Or a man
00:26:40That makes potions
00:26:41In a traveling shot
00:26:46I love Troye
00:26:48Wow
00:26:49That was so unexpected
00:26:50It's the best I can do, my gift is my song and this one's for you, oh, and you can
00:27:04tell everybody that this is your song, it may be quite simple but now that it's done, I hope you
00:27:18don't mind, I hope you don't mind.
00:27:20That I put down and find.
00:27:27Sing it!
00:27:29Wow, wow, wow.
00:27:30A wonderful life is while you're in the world.
00:27:38Wow!
00:27:42Baby!
00:27:45What a voice.
00:27:46Identity is hard when you sing such an iconic song like Elton's, but for you to hang on and keep
00:27:53in control of that is amazing. Way to come out here and box, alright?
00:28:01Thank you guys.
00:28:07I loved her, listen, I always go for the rocker girls and she nailed it. I really liked her energy,
00:28:14I loved her grit.
00:28:16I like honestly, I'm like not an emotional person but like, I thought about my mom and dad and just
00:28:21like how they've literally been there for me since day one.
00:28:24Well, it's okay.
00:28:28Those parents are having to be extra parental today.
00:28:30Oh my God.
00:28:33Hi everyone, my name is Abayami Lewis and I will be singing Rise Up by Andra Day.
00:28:38I'm doing this song for my mother.
00:28:41She is a single parent and life is not easy being a single parent.
00:28:44She has taught me to rise up against all things that I'm dealing with and it inspires me.
00:28:51I know I can rise up.
00:28:53We will rise, we will rise, we will rise up, we will rise, yeah.
00:29:09We will rise up, we'll rise like, the days of day dawn rise up, rise up praise, oh rise up.
00:29:19And I'll do it a thousand times again
00:29:25For you, for you, for you
00:29:37For you, for you, we will rise
00:29:52Thank you
00:29:53Thank you
00:29:57Goosey, come on
00:30:00She's freaking 16 and she's like a Disney star, you know what I mean?
00:30:05And for singer to have like that big belt and a beautiful head voice like that is so rare
00:30:11If the tide takes California
00:30:16I'm so glad I got to hold you
00:30:20My family has always been by my side throughout my entire music journey
00:30:24So it's really exciting to do this Ohana rap
00:30:28Till forever falls apart
00:30:33Till forever falls apart
00:30:37My parents have always sacrificed so much time and everything for this
00:30:41And it means so much to me that they're here right now and doing all this
00:30:44It really means a lot
00:30:45If the tide takes California
00:30:50I'm so glad I got to know ya
00:30:54And if the sky falls from heaven above
00:30:59Oh, I know I'll have the best time falling into love
00:31:09And for a while
00:31:11And for a while you were all mine
00:31:14I spent a lifetime giving you my heart
00:31:18I swear that I'll be yours forever
00:31:20I'll be yours forever
00:31:22I'll be yours forever
00:31:28I'll be yours forever
00:31:30I'll be yours forever
00:31:30Till forever falls apart
00:31:35Oh
00:31:38Oh
00:31:38Thank you so much
00:31:42Breath of fresh air
00:31:47How many are we getting rid of tonight?
00:31:49So there's 30 and we have to get down to 20
00:31:52Oh 10, okay
00:31:53Oh
00:31:54Yeah
00:31:56I'm worried. There's a lot of talented people that are in this group
00:32:00Let's please give it up for Brian Thomas.
00:32:06I can't point a finger at anyone I don't think is going to make it to the top 20, which
00:32:10makes it so scary.
00:32:12This next song goes out to all the people that we've had to leave behind in order to pursue our
00:32:17dreams.
00:32:18For this round, I'll be singing Landslide by Fleetwood Mac.
00:32:20This song is kind of about change.
00:32:23I just recently moved to South Florida in the pursuit of love.
00:32:27I hardly see anyone now. I kind of lost my family.
00:32:30It's just one of those seasons of life.
00:32:34Hey, bud. I'm super proud of you.
00:32:38I know how you've been dreaming about this your whole life.
00:32:42Having you here and just getting to spend the time.
00:32:50I miss you.
00:32:52I miss you. I miss being home.
00:32:55I love you with all my heart.
00:32:57I love you too.
00:33:06Well, I've been afraid of changing
00:33:12Cause I've built my life around you
00:33:19Great. I'm praying for you.
00:33:21Jay.
00:33:22But time made you older
00:33:25Even children get older
00:33:29And I'm getting older too
00:33:36Ooh, so take my love
00:33:40Take it down
00:33:45Caught the mountain and turn around
00:33:50And if you see my reflection in the snow-colored hair
00:34:03Maybe the Landslide will bring it down
00:34:09Oh, the Landslide brought me down
00:34:21Oh, the Landslide brought me down
00:34:39I remember
00:34:40I got a song to deliver
00:34:41And I got to make sure
00:34:43I'm knocking this thing out
00:34:44Start to finish
00:34:45Now, you're one of my favorite voices
00:34:47But it got a little screamy a little bit
00:34:50So just curb down some of that over-raspy gravelly stuff
00:34:55Thank you so much
00:34:58I was trying my hardest to get through this song
00:35:00And that just wasn't what the judges were looking for this round
00:35:03He was trying real hard
00:35:04Yeah
00:35:05He doesn't need to
00:35:05He did a really good job
00:35:07I'm so proud
00:35:08I'm glad my dad got to see it
00:35:10Cause it might have been my last performance of the Idol, so
00:35:18Welcome back to Idol's Ohana Round
00:35:20Where Ray is hoping to make it to America's vote
00:35:23I was looking at the camera and I was like
00:35:25This is so giving Love Island confessional
00:35:27It is
00:35:29Hi everyone
00:35:31My name is Ray
00:35:32I'm gonna be singing I'll Be There by The Jackson Five
00:35:35Yes
00:35:35I wanted to dedicate this song to my sister
00:35:39My heart, my soul, everything
00:35:41My sister Jamie is one of the most important people in my life
00:35:45She's the only person that really understands me
00:35:48And what I'm going through
00:35:51I just love you so much
00:35:52And this is for you
00:35:53My promise to you that I'll always be there for you
00:35:56So sweet
00:35:57A sister's love
00:35:58Ain't nothing like a sister's love now
00:36:01You and I must make a pact
00:36:06You and I must make a pact
00:36:07We must bring salvation back
00:36:13Okay
00:36:14Where there is love
00:36:17Where there is love
00:36:19I'll be there
00:36:23Oh my God
00:36:25I'll reach out my hand to you
00:36:30Come on girl
00:36:31Oh my God
00:36:32I have faith in all you do
00:36:37You better sing the song now
00:36:39But there is love
00:36:43I'll be there
00:36:47Oh, oh, oh, oh
00:36:50I'll be there to comfort you
00:36:54There's my world of dreams around you
00:36:57I'm so glad I found you, baby
00:37:01What is going on?
00:37:02I'll be there with the love so strong
00:37:06I'll be a serene
00:37:08You know I keep falling on
00:37:14I'll be there
00:37:17There you go, there you go
00:37:20I'll be there
00:37:23Yeah
00:37:28I'll be there
00:37:42There you go
00:37:48Sing it, baby
00:37:49I think America's gonna be there
00:37:51I think so
00:37:52You always just command the stage so perfectly
00:37:56Such confidence
00:37:58And I tell you, you are one of our exceptional voices that we have
00:38:04It's just really awesome to watch you be able to tell your sister how much you love her
00:38:10And you are a serious contender
00:38:12That was a great performance
00:38:14Thank you so much
00:38:17I love my sister so much
00:38:18I'm just seeing her just gave me all the nerves went away
00:38:22She came out, hand breaks off, no stops, just went in and I loved it
00:38:26Loved it
00:38:27Loved it
00:38:51Loved it
00:38:52I started gigging when I was nine years old
00:38:54And my parents drove me to every gig until I could get my license
00:38:56It meant a lot to have that foundation
00:38:59They're not here physically with me in Hawaii
00:39:00But my parents do know that I'm dedicating this song to them
00:39:03It's gonna be really special
00:39:05These hours aren't meant for conversation time
00:39:09Well, I'm confident
00:39:11Yeah
00:39:11It's too soon for tomorrow
00:39:13Too late for tonight
00:39:16That's why I'm shaking and pacing like I forgot my life
00:39:23And I wrote the show
00:39:26And I've lived the life
00:39:28The sky looks so vacant
00:39:33On these kind of nights
00:39:37It's gone when you're placing
00:39:43Your cautious hand in mine
00:39:49Forever maintaining
00:39:51The illusion that we are gonna be alright
00:40:00So sleep on me
00:40:01Sleep on me
00:40:03One day I'm gonna get it right
00:40:06Sleep on me, sleep on
00:40:08I'ma make it up
00:40:10Till you kind of get
00:40:12Trying to be
00:40:13Trying to be
00:40:15Someone who you like
00:40:17Oh, sleep on me, sleep on
00:40:20I'm a stranger back to sight
00:40:24Hey
00:40:26Wow
00:40:27Thank you so much
00:40:28I appreciate it, thank you
00:40:29I felt like I was at his show
00:40:31I love it
00:40:32Yeah
00:40:32Alright, Jake
00:40:33So you know you took a big chance
00:40:36Keep those vocals just as you started out at the beginning
00:40:38Strong
00:40:39Keep it all the way through
00:40:42But as a songwriter to a songwriter
00:40:44You did well
00:40:45Thank you so much
00:40:46Really kind of you guys
00:40:47Thank you
00:40:50You could hear him in a studio
00:40:53And like
00:40:54Lock him right there
00:40:55It's like watching
00:40:56Young Bruce Springsteen
00:40:59There you go
00:40:59Paul Simon
00:41:00There you go
00:41:01I don't know
00:41:02I don't know
00:41:02He ain't the artist
00:41:02He's the artist
00:41:04Sleep on me
00:41:05Sleep on me
00:41:07Sleep on me
00:41:09I like it
00:41:11I like it
00:41:26Because family is everywhere
00:41:28And they mean everything
00:41:31Aww
00:41:32Yeah
00:41:36I love this song
00:41:41Two bodies
00:41:44Riddled with scars
00:41:46From our pretense
00:41:48Intertwined in a car
00:41:51Dirty bike scene
00:41:53Stare at a driving screen now
00:41:59It's been a long year
00:42:02And all of our books
00:42:04Pages dog year
00:42:07We write out the ends
00:42:09Of our wrong steer
00:42:11And forget to read
00:42:16This is one of the most unique voices
00:42:18I've ever heard in my life
00:42:20Yet the sun was collapsing
00:42:26Until the seas rose
00:42:29And the buildings came crashing
00:42:37Everywhere, everything
00:42:39When I love you
00:42:41Till we're food for the worms
00:42:43To eat
00:42:43Till our fingers decompose
00:42:48Keep my hands in yours
00:42:54Drop slowly
00:42:56Know every route in this county
00:43:00Maybe that ain't such a bad thing
00:43:05Tell you where not to speak
00:43:13Everywhere, everything
00:43:15Everywhere, everything
00:43:16Love you
00:43:17Till we're food for the worms
00:43:19To eat
00:43:20Till our fingers decompose
00:43:25Keep my hands in yours
00:43:32Keep my hands in yours
00:43:46Every time you open your mouth
00:43:48And sing
00:43:48I want more
00:43:49I feel like
00:43:50We've seen you already
00:43:52Like kind of stepping in
00:43:53Getting a little more confidence
00:43:55In yourself
00:43:55Just keep leaning into that
00:43:57And it's so fun to watch
00:43:59And it's so fun to listen to
00:44:00Thank you so much
00:44:07Thanks, bye
00:44:13I'm obsessed with her
00:44:15So unassuming
00:44:16And I watch this crowd over here
00:44:18They weren't expecting that
00:44:19What kind of alien, unexpected, crazy voice
00:44:22Was that
00:44:24Whee
00:44:24Where'd that voice come from
00:44:26I've never heard a tone like that
00:44:28Yeah
00:44:32Welcome back
00:44:34As our Ohana round continues
00:44:36Lionel checks in on the families
00:44:38I love watching this boy
00:44:40I don't
00:44:41It's just agonizing as parents
00:44:43Who might be struggling
00:44:44With tonight's decision
00:44:45To award one platinum ticket
00:44:48I don't know what y'all are going through
00:44:49But hang in there, y'all
00:44:51I know
00:44:52They're all doing so incredible
00:44:54Yeah
00:44:54Everyone's doing amazing
00:45:10You better sing it, you better sing it
00:45:13Thank you so much
00:45:14Big boy, love you
00:45:15Well, we are keeping tabs on everybody
00:45:17On that piece of paper
00:45:18We're going to vote based on our notes
00:45:21We're very serious
00:45:22I'll tell you
00:45:23It's very difficult
00:45:25And the second platinum ticket decision
00:45:27Belongs to the industry experts
00:45:30The truth is
00:45:30Everybody deserves a shot
00:45:32The talent is so high
00:45:33That everyone literally deserves this
00:45:35But who are we going to give it to?
00:45:37It ain't about how fast I get there
00:45:41It ain't about what's waiting on the other side
00:46:00The third platinum ticket will be chosen by the idols themselves.
00:46:05I just see exceptional talent and I just don't know how I'm going to narrow that down at all.
00:46:11I don't know.
00:46:17I just want you to know who I am.
00:46:22I just want you to know who I am.
00:46:27I just want you to know who I am.
00:46:35I just want you to know who I am.
00:47:05I've been super open about it.
00:47:07It's crazy.
00:47:07It's like the perfect song.
00:47:08I relate to it in so many ways.
00:47:10I'm dedicating this song to my grandpa.
00:47:14He passed away six years ago but he was a photographer and he spent so much of his life capturing
00:47:20the
00:47:21most important moments of other people's lives.
00:47:25I just felt like I could really be myself around him and we could laugh with each other.
00:47:33Even though he can't be here taking pictures of me, I know he's watching right now.
00:47:39Looking back at photos of him reminds me of the love that my whole family shared with him.
00:47:43I'm going to be thinking about him and just reminding the world how great he was.
00:47:56Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes, it is the only thing that I know, it is the only thing
00:48:15that makes us feel alive.
00:48:22Mmm, we keep this love in our photographs.
00:48:28We make these memories for ourselves.
00:48:32When our eyes are never closing, hearts are never broken, time's forever frozen still.
00:48:41So you can keep me inside the pocket of your ripped jeans.
00:48:49Holding me closer till our eyes meet, you won't ever be alone.
00:48:57Wait for me to come home, wait for me to come home, wait for me to come home.
00:49:12Oh, when I'm away, I will remember how you kissed me
00:49:28Under the lamppost back on 6th Street
00:49:33Hearing you whisper through the phone
00:49:40Oh, wait for me to come home
00:49:46Oh, my God!
00:49:49Oh, my God!
00:49:51Oh, my God!
00:49:54Ugh, I mean, it's honest, and it's real,
00:49:58and it's believable, and it's just beautiful.
00:50:02Thank you so much.
00:50:03Thank you, guys.
00:50:08Dude, insane.
00:50:10Insane vocal.
00:50:11I love listening to them talk about it.
00:50:14He was so consistent, start to finish.
00:50:15He went viral already, and I can see why, you know?
00:50:19You can tell when somebody's humble, the way he's standing up here.
00:50:22I think that matters a lot.
00:50:23It now comes down to who cuts through.
00:50:25Yeah.
00:50:34Hello, hello, everyone.
00:50:35My name is Sheldon Riley, and I'm from Australia.
00:50:38I just want to quickly say how beautiful it is to me to see all you family here for this
00:50:43God-given talent over this side.
00:50:45I know what the sacrifice is to be here.
00:50:48Unfortunately, I don't have family here with me today.
00:50:52I actually haven't had family with me in a long time on this music journey of mine.
00:50:58Sorry.
00:50:59We got us!
00:50:59We got us!
00:51:02Sorry, sorry.
00:51:05Sometimes in life, when you are not handed the right cards and put in the right family with the right
00:51:11people,
00:51:14you have to build your own family and your own home, and that's what Ohana is to me.
00:51:18So, I'm really grateful to be here, and thank you for having me, and thank you for being my little
00:51:23family here with me.
00:51:24So, yeah.
00:51:30I'm singing To Build A Home by Patrick Watson.
00:51:33It's about building that home for yourself, that place where you don't feel alone.
00:51:38I think a big reason why I've come to American Idol is that I've found that for myself.
00:51:42You know, I've built my own Ohana, so it feels like the perfect song to celebrate everyone that's made that
00:51:46happen.
00:51:47There is a house built out of stone.
00:51:54Oh, this is a place where I, I don't feel alone.
00:52:05Oh, this is a place where I, I feel at home.
00:52:22Oh, that was so special!
00:52:34Oh!
00:52:38Oh, you've always learned!
00:52:40Oh!
00:52:42Oh!
00:52:42Oh!
00:52:43Oh!
00:52:43Oh!
00:52:51Oh, yeah.
00:52:54Oh, yeah.
00:52:55Oh, yeah.
00:53:00Oh, yeah.
00:53:02Yeah.
00:53:04Oh, yeah.
00:53:07For you.
00:53:09For me.
00:53:11Yeah.
00:53:13And now it's time to leave.
00:53:20Yeah.
00:53:22Yeah.
00:53:25Oh, yeah.
00:53:28It's time.
00:53:35I built a house.
00:53:38No.
00:53:41I built a home.
00:53:55I'm so sorry.
00:53:58You good?
00:53:58Yeah, I'm good.
00:54:00I'm good.
00:54:01You have so much talent and range and power in your vocals.
00:54:08I feel like your brain just gets in the way.
00:54:12I feel like you're kind of building up some walls in front of us every time you sing.
00:54:19But you don't need to do that because you're enough.
00:54:24Get here.
00:54:26That was some words of wisdom right there.
00:54:29It's just going to be a mind game I have to kind of work through.
00:54:33I don't know.
00:54:34I don't know.
00:54:34The industry has been really nasty to me.
00:54:36I've had to put walls up for a long time.
00:54:40I think that what is going to come out of this experience for him, he'll actually find himself.
00:54:47Yeah.
00:54:48Carrie, that was good.
00:54:49You better preach.
00:54:50That was so good.
00:54:51That was deep.
00:55:03My name is Julian Kalel.
00:55:04I'm 19 years old from El Paso, Texas.
00:55:07And I wrote this song called Surrender.
00:55:09I auditioned with this song for my very, very first audition.
00:55:12My family was there.
00:55:14Feels like it was only yesterday that I was in that room with those judges.
00:55:17When I wrote the song Surrender, I was really, really down.
00:55:22So I went to my dad and he told me that anxiety, the fear, whatever's out of your control,
00:55:28let it stay out of your control.
00:55:29It's not worth your fear.
00:55:31He was the one that said, surrender.
00:55:34Surrender those feelings.
00:55:36Not only were we able to help him reach lighter place, it actually turned into a song.
00:55:43I don't know why.
00:55:48To see him arrive on this stage, this is everything that we've prayed for.
00:55:56I just want to dedicate this song to you, Papa.
00:55:59Thank you for always being by my side through my absolute worst and my best.
00:56:03And I love you.
00:56:05Love you, Michael.
00:56:06Bye!
00:56:07We kissed the cross!
00:56:09You may always do that.
00:56:11You may always do that.
00:56:13I love you.
00:56:25There's a hole in my chest.
00:56:30Knock me down, lay me to rest.
00:56:35Drown my thoughts with kerosene
00:56:40Bring my fears to my soul
00:56:45Tired of fighting, tired of keeping up the side
00:56:49Now I'm a couple ties in, memories are putting back
00:56:53So I surrender
00:56:57If it's more than I've waste, I'll raise a flag
00:57:01But fate is innocence, oh I'm tired, it's empty
00:57:08So I'll let it go, my soul, you know, let's live
00:57:12But I hope I pass your test
00:57:16I'll be gone without a sound
00:57:19When my heart fails me and I'm not around
00:57:22Floating on the paths I used to draw
00:57:27Something stops me, guess I've found
00:57:30The stories end, it's all clear now
00:57:33The only feeling bigger than love is lost
00:57:36So I surrender
00:57:40If it's more than I've waste, I'll raise a flag
00:57:44But fate is in his hands
00:57:47You know I'm tired, it's empty
00:57:49Oh, I'm tired, it's empty
00:57:55Oh, I surrender
00:58:13Oh, I surrender
00:58:16You're so solid, I mean, I've heard you do that song before
00:58:20And the fact that you've written that song
00:58:23Just even some of the changes in the chord progression
00:58:26Are so mature and far beyond your age
00:58:30And you just got the star magic
00:58:32One of my favorite performances of the night
00:58:35Yeah, love you
00:58:36Thank you so much, thank you
00:58:38To get the opportunity to even play that song
00:58:40On a stage like this
00:58:42I'm just glad that I never gave up
00:58:43It's come full circle
00:58:45For him to share it with his sister
00:58:46Just made it all the more special
00:58:49It just makes me so, so thankful
00:58:51To be loved by my parents and my family
00:58:54And I'm just so grateful
00:59:02Just beeping, hold on one second
00:59:04Takes me back to the construction days
00:59:07Back it up
00:59:09My name's Cutter Bradley
00:59:11I'm from Florence, Alabama
00:59:12Florence, Alabama
00:59:13I know where you're from
00:59:14I used to be a welder and a machinist
00:59:16So I went to college for that
00:59:18I've worked many jobs
00:59:20From carpentry, welding
00:59:22To construction
00:59:23But music, ever since I did music
00:59:25Something was just poking at me
00:59:27Like, I gotta see how far I can take it
00:59:29I'll be singing some Jason Aldean
00:59:31Amarillo Sky
00:59:32And the reason I picked that song
00:59:34Is because it's a song about hard work
00:59:36Dedicating it to my parents right here
00:59:37Because they showed me what hard work is
00:59:39And it's rubbed off on me
00:59:41Because I'm hard working for my dreams right now
00:59:45That's right
00:59:48This is a lot of tempo I was hoping for
00:59:50I love it
00:59:51It gets up before the dawn
00:59:54Cracks and lunch and thermos full of coffee
01:00:00It's another day in the dusty haze
01:00:03Burning rays are wearing down his body
01:00:09This is worth the price of gold
01:00:12It's the cheapest thing he's ever sold
01:00:16Come on now
01:00:17He's still holding on
01:00:20Just takes a tractor another round
01:00:24Pulls a plow across the ground
01:00:27He sends up another prayer
01:00:31He says, Lord, I never complain
01:00:34I never ask why
01:00:36Please don't let my dreams run dry
01:00:41Underneath, underneath this Amarillo sky
01:00:46Oh thy ciento
01:00:49And
01:00:51And
01:00:51take a tractor another round
01:00:54Another round
01:00:55Another round
01:00:57У
01:00:57It takes a tractor, another round, another round.
01:01:02Come on, run!
01:01:03It says I never go plain, I never ask why.
01:01:06Please don't let my dreams run dry.
01:01:11Run underneath, run underneath these Samarillo skies.
01:01:19Thank y'all.
01:01:25Great song choice for you, and I tell you, rockin' overalls in Hawaii.
01:01:30I tell you what, that's pretty amazing.
01:01:33You really impressed me with where you went vocally.
01:01:36I enjoyed it. Great job.
01:01:38Thank you so much. Thank y'all.
01:01:41Taking the part, playing it, swinging it around, and then going out to the audience, I was like,
01:01:46Hey, I see you, I see you.
01:01:48Somebody crushing down there?
01:01:51Yeah, Carrie's crushing, too.
01:01:53I said, no.
01:01:54I see where you're coming from, and you are correct, ma'am.
01:02:00With the added pressure of not only the judges, but also the industry experts deciding their fate,
01:02:06the weight of the moment is getting to some.
01:02:09The industry experts are going to be voting for us, which is scary.
01:02:13She was missing, was a little bit of confidence.
01:02:15You can tell she's one of the younger performers.
01:02:17She doesn't have the experience.
01:02:18There'll absolutely be more pressure.
01:02:20I thought she was a superstar.
01:02:22I agree.
01:02:25Oh!
01:02:26That's a steal wrong!
01:02:27It's super scary to know that they're going to be watching and judging.
01:02:30It looked like she was a little bored.
01:02:33Oh, no!
01:02:33What are you talking about?
01:02:35Oh, my goodness.
01:02:36That was storytelling.
01:02:37I wish she would have looked over here, but I thought she brought the power to the song.
01:02:43That was beautiful.
01:02:44Okay.
01:02:44The way she said it sounds better than you say.
01:02:47I hate what you said.
01:02:48Yeah.
01:02:49Definitely got to bring my A-game.
01:02:51I got to, you know, I got to do something.
01:02:54You got it, Mike!
01:02:59You got it, Mike!
01:03:20Until you can, until you can.
01:03:23He's just a baby.
01:03:25It just felt like it was, something was a little off.
01:03:28Maybe it wasn't his best performance.
01:03:30I was seeing, like, a country Bieber with the, you know, the little hair flip.
01:03:37Yes!
01:03:37Yes!
01:03:39That's exactly right!
01:03:41Shirley, the co-editor-in-chief of Rolling Stone, is going to be here.
01:03:45I am, like, freaking out.
01:03:50Hi, everyone.
01:03:51My name is Kendall, and today I'm actually singing a song that I wrote.
01:03:55It's called Woman of Me.
01:03:57I wrote it for my mom.
01:03:58I can't look at her too long or I will immediately cry.
01:04:01My mom is my favorite person in the whole entire world.
01:04:04She has been a backbone and just a rock in my life.
01:04:11But growing up, we had a tendency to clash.
01:04:15I was a pretty rebellious kid.
01:04:16Like, I started hanging around with the wrong people, dropped out of school, moved all the
01:04:20way to the other side of the country in L.A.
01:04:23I needed to go and explore the world and learn and fall flat on my face.
01:04:28And I'm sure that, like, I'm sure that really broke her heart, you know?
01:04:37Whoa.
01:04:39I think that sometimes before you can watch someone fly, you have to let them hit rock
01:04:45bottom.
01:04:46And it was the hardest thing that I've ever done.
01:04:48She was 18 years old, and she needed to go.
01:04:52She needed to figure it out.
01:04:55Having a mother that loved me enough to let me go, but be standing there with open arms
01:05:02when I ran back is a gratitude I can't fully even express.
01:05:09And so I tried with this song.
01:05:11And I just, I really want to honor her with this.
01:05:14I really want her to understand just how special she is to me.
01:05:26I'm the daughter of a God-fearing woman
01:05:31Countless nights she probably laid there awake
01:05:34To her surprise, I did everything I shouldn't want to wear
01:05:41Both hearts would break
01:05:46From time to time, there's a look in her eyes
01:05:52She didn't think she did it right
01:05:54Oh, God.
01:05:56She was the light when there was no light I could see
01:06:01Gave me a reason to fight
01:06:06She wiped my eyes when the world turned its back on me
01:06:12Taught me all my wrong from rights
01:06:17Couldn't fit all of my thanks in a bottle
01:06:22It'd break before it drifted into a sea
01:06:27She was a girl
01:06:30She was a girl
01:06:32She was a girl
01:06:32Now she's made a woman of me
01:06:37Very good
01:06:38She wiped my eyes when the world turned its back on me
01:06:44Taught me all my wrong from rights
01:06:48I could have fit all of my thanks in a bottle
01:06:54And break before it drifted into a sea
01:06:59She was a girl
01:07:01Before she was a woman
01:07:04Now she's made a woman
01:07:07She's made a woman
01:07:10She's made a woman
01:07:14Of me
01:07:19Thank you
01:07:20Your songwriting is incredible
01:07:24Oh, Kendall
01:07:25I just want to hear more of your songs
01:07:29You're such a great storyteller
01:07:31Thank you
01:07:31And you have the voice to back it all up
01:07:35So if this was truly a moment meant for you right now
01:07:40Thank you so much
01:07:41Thank you
01:07:47Perfect, no complaints
01:07:48That's my American Idol
01:07:50I can't even
01:07:50I'm so proud of her
01:07:53I couldn't even look at my mom
01:07:54Like I knew I would cry
01:07:55But she was right there on my heart
01:07:58And I just like felt her
01:07:59And that was such a special moment
01:08:01I wish I could do it again
01:08:02And again and again
01:08:16I'll be singing
01:08:17All I Want by Codaline
01:08:18Dedicated to my great-grandmother
01:08:20Her name was Mama Rice to me
01:08:22But to everybody else
01:08:23She was Nancy
01:08:24The song that he picked
01:08:25It means a lot to the family
01:08:28She was a huge supporter of me
01:08:30And this is one of the songs
01:08:32This is one of the songs
01:08:33She loved for me to sing to her
01:08:35I sung it in hospice
01:08:37Unfortunately
01:08:38Before she passed away
01:08:39So hopefully
01:08:41Y'all like it
01:08:41Alright, alright
01:08:43Wow, yeah
01:08:49All I want
01:08:52Was nothing more
01:08:56To hear you
01:08:58Locking at my door
01:09:02Cause if I could see
01:09:05Your face once more
01:09:08I could die a happy man
01:09:13I'm sure
01:09:14And if you love me
01:09:19Why'd you leave me?
01:09:24Take my body
01:09:27Take my body
01:09:31And all I want is
01:09:35And all I need is
01:09:40To find somebody
01:09:42I'll find somebody
01:09:48Like you
01:09:54If you love me
01:09:58If you love me
01:09:59If you love me
01:10:00Why'd you leave me
01:10:02Take my body
01:10:05Take my body
01:10:10And all I want is
01:10:14And all I need is
01:10:18Find somebody
01:10:21I'll find somebody
01:10:26Like you
01:10:29Like you
01:10:31Like you
01:10:35Like you
01:10:38I love you boy
01:10:39I love you boy
01:10:45Wow
01:10:46Wow
01:10:47Getting so proud there buddy
01:10:48Powerful place
01:10:49And he's so sweet
01:10:50Yeah he is
01:10:51He's got that grit
01:10:52Teddy Swims
01:10:53Chris Stapleton
01:10:54You just took us
01:10:55On a journey
01:10:56You brought us in
01:10:57When it was meant
01:10:59To feel intense
01:11:00And then on
01:11:02The soaring notes
01:11:03You kind of took us
01:11:04To this whole other place
01:11:05Where we could just
01:11:06Kind of feel that swell
01:11:07That's a gift
01:11:09Great job
01:11:10Thank you
01:11:10Thank you so much
01:11:12I realized this voice
01:11:14Could go that high
01:11:15For that long
01:11:17To be able to take a song
01:11:18That is usually taken
01:11:20In a completely different direction
01:11:21And bring it here
01:11:22Was magic
01:11:24So proud of it
01:11:27I can't talk right
01:11:28I can't even breathe
01:11:29That was amazing
01:11:32To make it to the top 30
01:11:34It feels like incredible
01:11:38You are meant to be here
01:11:40Thank you
01:11:40I'm just enjoying it
01:11:41And soaking it in
01:11:42Every which way
01:11:43You looking for me?
01:11:44For the old hunt around
01:11:45I pick Stand Up
01:11:46By Cynthia Erivo
01:11:47I will dedicate this song
01:11:49Today to my lovely mother
01:11:51That's in the audience
01:11:52Over here to the side
01:11:53My mom
01:11:55She has always
01:11:56Stood up for me
01:11:57She has always
01:11:58Paved the way for me
01:11:59Been there
01:12:00Every step of the way
01:12:01I had Micaiah
01:12:04When I was at college
01:12:05Single mom
01:12:06And so
01:12:07There were times
01:12:08Where I didn't know
01:12:10How I was going
01:12:11To do some things
01:12:12We would come home
01:12:13From school
01:12:13And then we would go
01:12:14To my grandparents house
01:12:15And eat dinner
01:12:16I didn't know then
01:12:17As a child
01:12:18That was solely
01:12:18Because we didn't have food
01:12:21Everybody hits rough spots
01:12:23But I hit a rough one
01:12:24It was a really dark time
01:12:27For her to allow me
01:12:29To solely be a child
01:12:31And have no worries
01:12:33She never let us
01:12:35See her suffer
01:12:39When my mom hears me
01:12:41Perform this song
01:12:42I hope she feels
01:12:44That I will always
01:12:45Be here for her
01:12:46Through every step of the way
01:12:47The same way she was there
01:12:48For me
01:12:49And that one day
01:12:50This all will pay off
01:12:52I've been walking
01:12:56With my face
01:12:58Turned to the sun
01:13:02It can be
01:13:03Oh I got eyes
01:13:05In the back of my head
01:13:09Just in case
01:13:10I have to run
01:13:12It's about to get dirty
01:13:14It's about to get dirty
01:13:17Watch the clouds
01:13:18Roll back
01:13:19And the stars
01:13:20Fill the night
01:13:21That's when I wanna stand up
01:13:26Take my people with me
01:13:29Together we are going
01:13:32To a brand new home
01:13:39And I know
01:13:43What's around the bend
01:13:46Might be hard
01:13:48Might be hard
01:13:49To face
01:13:49Cause I'm alone
01:13:51And I just might know
01:13:55But Lord knows I tried
01:13:59Sure as I was
01:14:02Still there
01:14:06I can feel it in my soul
01:14:08Come on
01:14:08Come on
01:14:08Come on
01:14:09Come on
01:14:10Come on
01:14:10Together we are going
01:14:14To a brand new home
01:14:17Far across the river
01:14:20And you hear freedom calling
01:14:24Calling me to
01:14:26The winds that we're gonna keep on
01:14:28Deepin' on
01:14:30I can feel it in my soul
01:14:36I can feel it in my soul
01:14:51And I can feel it in my soul
01:14:51See the sound, Sam
01:14:52You gotta see it, baby
01:14:59McCiah came here to kill
01:15:02It was so emotional
01:15:04It showed everybody what you can do
01:15:06It had Southern moments
01:15:08It had Southern gospel moments
01:15:10had uplifting moments and really way to step out there and show us a whole
01:15:15nother level of what you can do. Thank you so much, thank you.
01:15:23You guys just left it all out there on the stage, but I feel really good and hopefully I get
01:15:28a
01:15:28platinum ticket tonight. What a way to close the shop! She took me to church!
01:15:33She took me to church, I loved every second of it.
01:15:44Coming up... This is crazy. Who will survive to sing for your vote?
01:15:49Find out after the break. I really don't want to go home.
01:15:54Welcome back to American Idol's brand new Ohana Round. All 30 of our Idol hopefuls have performed
01:16:00and now it's time to whittle them down to the top 20 who get the chance to sing for America's
01:16:06vote.
01:16:06I am nervous because everyone was impressive. I know you can see a lot of voices out there.
01:16:11I don't know, I don't know. But first there are three platinum tickets up for grabs
01:16:17and each one secures one of those spots. But for the first time ever it's not the judges making
01:16:23the final call. The first will be chosen by the industry tastemaker.
01:16:28It's tough y'all. The second by the Ohana, the family members.
01:16:33A lot of powerhouses. And the third platinum ticket by their peers, our Idol hopefuls.
01:16:39This is crazy. Now the Ohana cannot vote for their own family members and the idols
01:16:45cannot vote for themselves. It's really about whose performance moved them the most.
01:16:53It is a gut-wrenching decision to have to make. Whatever hit me in the heart, that's who I want.
01:16:59It's difficult. I mean, I think just people that really stepped it up to, you know, superstar level.
01:17:05As someone who's watched the show for so many seasons, who's written about it, who's covered it,
01:17:09being on the side is, it's really stressful. Seeing a baby. This is literally the hardest
01:17:15thing that I've ever done in my life to have someone's career in your hands.
01:17:20But we're going to make someone tonight tonight.
01:17:23There we go.
01:17:24So, which is also something to look forward to. We're making history up here, y'all.
