00:00Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang chair Zheng Liwen has met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in
00:04Beijing. It's an historic moment, the first meeting between the leaders of the KMT and the
00:09Chinese Communist Party in nearly a decade. For more on what was discussed, we go to Leslie Liao
00:15in our Taipei newsroom. Leslie, what can you tell us?
00:21Well, Jeremy, the meeting wasn't actually confirmed by either the KMT or Chinese leadership
00:27until the day of, but it was highly expected, and it finally happened on Friday morning.
00:32This is the main event of KMT chair Zheng Liwen's six-day trip to China. She had been to Nanjing
00:38and Shanghai before going to Beijing, where she met with Xi Jinping. Now, during their meeting,
00:44Xi Jinping welcomed Zheng Liwen as the first KMT chair in 10 years to travel to China and meet
00:50with him. He also said that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait, that is people in both China
00:55and Taiwan are Chinese people, with a shared 5,000-year history, and that unification is
01:01inevitable.
01:23Now, Jeremy, Zheng has billed her trip as one of peace. Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive
01:28Party rejects China's claim over Taiwan. In turn, Beijing labels the DPP as separatists and refuses
01:36to hold high-level talks with Taiwan. And it's also ramped up military aggression around Taiwan,
01:43sending warplane sorties and conducting military drills around the country. Now, for her part,
01:48Zheng also said that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese,
01:53Chinese, and that peace between the two sides is a joint responsibility.
02:19Now, Zheng and Xi Jinping held closed-door talks for about an hour. Zheng Liwen is expected to hold her
02:26own press
02:26conference later this afternoon. We're going to be keeping an eye on that.
02:32Now, Leslie, has the DPP said anything about this meeting so far?
02:39Well, Jeremy, nothing immediately in response to the meeting, but they're probably waiting until after
02:45Zheng Liwen's press conference to issue something. But during this trip, the DPP has pointed out that
02:52Chinese military aggression has not died down despite Zheng's message of peace. And on Friday
03:00morning, the DPP also cited a poll that showed that Zheng Liwen's trustworthiness is polling is scoring low
03:06among voters. And they also added that Zheng Liwen does not have any authority to speak on Taiwan's
03:12behalf or make any deals with China. Jeremy, back to you.
03:17Thanks, Leslie. That was Leslie Liao reporting from Taipei. We'll have more on this visit in our Taiwan Plus
03:23news show later.
