00:01We did go through quite a few dogs.
00:03We found you a match.
00:07She certainly ticks the fun box.
00:10It isn't just one chihuahua.
00:12It's a trio.
00:14Oh my God!
00:15She's five months old.
00:18It's a Jack Russell.
00:20His name is Mushy.
00:24In a quiet corner of the English countryside,
00:28there's a place for those looking for love.
00:31There is only one chance at life.
00:34And I'm missing the dog.
00:36Here, a dedicated team match abandoned dogs.
00:39You've been through a rough time, haven't you?
00:41It's okay, buddy.
00:43With hopeful new owners.
00:44We could trot together.
00:46Let's trot!
00:47A lot of people come to us when they're at a crossroads.
00:50I lost five years of my memory
00:53and I don't think they will ever come back.
00:55And they're putting their trust in us.
01:01Last spring, we installed fixed rig cameras.
01:05Additional support staff.
01:07Do you have any golden retrievers?
01:09We have 20.
01:10And a secluded meeting pen.
01:12Oh, nice.
01:13It's all in here.
01:14To see how lives could be changed forever
01:17with the perfect match.
01:19Oh, my God!
01:20Oh!
01:22Oh!
01:22You've given him the zoomies.
01:23Some connections happen in a heartbeat.
01:27Hello, we're here.
01:29He's trying to walk you.
01:30He's trying to walk you.
01:31He's trying to walk you.
01:32But for some, it can take time.
01:37When people connect with a dog,
01:40it's not through looks or a type.
01:42It's through a feeling.
01:45That first time the tip of the tail wags,
01:48you just get a little flutter of hope.
01:51I love them.
01:51You know they're a keeper.
02:00She made it.
02:02Keeps the early mornings aware.
02:11No, we're not jumping.
02:13We're dancing.
02:15You have fun.
02:16I don't feel like dancing.
02:18No, so no dancing today.
02:20Want to sit?
02:21Oh, she's got a job.
02:23You're good.
02:24Here you go, Mabish.
02:28How to talk is done.
02:30This.
02:31And this.
02:32Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle.
02:35It may only take two to tango,
02:37but Nikki and Ruby Rose want to make it three.
02:41If I was to describe you, Ruby Rose,
02:43I would say that you're funny.
02:45I would say you're kind.
02:47I would say a little bit cheeky
02:51and definitely very messy.
02:55Hiya!
02:56Hiya!
02:56My name's Alicia.
02:57What's your name?
02:58My name is Ruby Rose.
02:59I'm 12 years old.
03:00Ruby Rose and you're 12 years old?
03:02Yes.
03:02Oh, you're nearly a teenager.
03:04I know.
03:05Oh, yeah!
03:06So are you a proper teenager,
03:07like listening to music too loud?
03:09Yes.
03:10And definitely karaoke too loud, isn't it?
03:13Sometimes when you hear me calling,
03:15I hear the music get louder.
03:17Is that what you're doing to me?
03:20That's a bit cheeky, isn't it?
03:22I knew it.
03:23I knew that.
03:24I knew that was going on.
03:26We love all dogs, don't we, Ruby Rose?
03:28Look, there's small fluffy dogs.
03:30Oh, yes.
03:31Which doggy do you like?
03:33Really small.
03:34A small doggy.
03:34I don't want a doggy that sits in your handbag.
03:38We can't really agree on size, colour, breed.
03:42The only thing we agree on is fluffy.
03:45I like a wolf.
03:46No!
03:47You like a...
03:49Yeah, so I don't know how that's going to work for us.
03:52It's going to have to be rock, paper, scissors, job.
03:53Let's try.
03:55Let's try.
03:55Rock, paper, scissors, shoot!
03:57Oh!
03:59Ruby Rose is the winger, everybody!
04:02We'll see.
04:03Whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop!
04:09What's the reason for re-homing, if you don't mind me asking?
04:12I have a serious illness.
04:14I can all want me to look after her thoughts, man.
04:18I know you just shouldn't have been tough, that man.
04:20Oh, bless you.
04:24Are you all right with her?
04:25Do you want me to take care of her?
04:26If you could...
04:26Could you pull me a little bit?
04:28Yeah.
04:28I'd say I'm not that mobile.
04:31Hey.
04:33Tell me who we have here today.
04:35Bella.
04:35Bella.
04:37She would play, don't you?
04:38She would play.
04:39Yeah.
04:39Oh!
04:40It's just those big beady eyes.
04:42They're just very cute.
04:43They get me.
04:43Yeah, big ball of love.
04:47Things were better in my life, health-wise.
04:49I wouldn't be here.
04:50Yeah.
04:51I struggle to walk halfway round the village these days.
04:55Oh, bless you, sorry.
04:56I think she's perfect.
04:57But she's not getting what she should be getting.
05:00Yeah.
05:00I'll be really over the moon if she ends up with a farm like that.
05:04Oh, give her what she needs.
05:06Such a good girl.
05:08I think you know there's something up, don't you?
05:10She'll definitely be well looked after.
05:12Yeah.
05:13Hey.
05:14Yeah, we're going to let daddy go.
05:19Be a good girl.
05:23The owner, he's obviously clearly going through quite a bit medically himself.
05:27Good girl.
05:28Come here, then.
05:29And he knows, obviously, it's right for her.
05:31But that doesn't make it any easier.
05:35Does it, buddy?
05:37I know I know it's hard.
05:44Oh, we've got the same hair.
05:46Yay!
05:48Nice Afro puffs, aren't they?
05:50Look it's up in your Afro puffs.
05:52Yay!
05:54Yay!
05:55I'm not cool enough for this.
05:58And so, Ruby Rose, will you be looking after the dog?
06:02Yes.
06:03Oh, I like that.
06:04That was a definite yes.
06:05A sassy, definite yes.
06:07Yeah.
06:09Ruby Rose and I are expert dog sitters, aren't we?
06:11Yes.
06:12So, shall we think about who we've had as a doggy?
06:14Who've we looked after?
06:15We've had our lovely Colin.
06:17Myla.
06:18We've had Myla.
06:19We've had George.
06:21We've done a lot of doggy loving for other people, haven't we?
06:25Ruby Rose is really used to the responsibility of it all.
06:30Okay.
06:30So, it sounds like you've had a bit of experience with a few different types of dogs.
06:34Yeah.
06:35I want one.
06:36And you want your own one now.
06:38Yeah.
06:38I think you're ready, yeah.
06:39I just feel like having that relationship now would be really important for her.
06:46When you're a parent, you know, you're always with your child.
06:49They always want to hug you or they want to sit next to you.
06:52And then suddenly you have this teenage human being who really just wants you to bog off unless
06:59it's involving food or activities, basically.
07:03Because she's starting to get bored of me as well.
07:05We've entered into the...
07:06Oh, you're not getting bored of me.
07:08No, we've entered into the five second home and going upstairs to my bedroom and shutting
07:13the door, you know.
07:14Proper teenager stuff.
07:15Teenager stuff, yeah.
07:17And all normal.
07:17So, in our experience of borrowing doggies, we've just been so happy and just gets us
07:23out, you know, and also brings us together again.
07:26It gives you a good routine and a reason to get out.
07:29What's your dream dog?
07:30Well, we can't...
07:32We don't agree.
07:34I can work around anything.
07:37So, ultimately, the match really has got to be right for Ruby Rose.
07:41OK.
07:42Shall we go and see what we can find?
07:45Hi!
07:46See you in a minute.
07:47Are you excited?
07:52This way.
07:53This way.
07:54Come on, Poppet.
07:57This is your house.
07:59You're very rude neighbours, I'm afraid.
08:02I'm so sorry.
08:04Hi.
08:05OK.
08:06If a dog's like Bella, it's a bit of a shock coming in to this sort of environment,
08:10especially when they've literally lived in a home all their lives.
08:14They don't know any different.
08:17Yeah, it's nicely settled now, isn't it?
08:20Oh, good girl, aren't you?
08:23You're being so brave.
08:25Hey.
08:26I promise you'll be OK.
08:28We'll look after you.
08:29But I will check in on you later.
08:31OK?
08:32You'll be all right.
08:37Be a good girl.
08:44Hello.
08:45Oh, my God.
08:47I don't know who is more excited, you or us.
08:50We're both very excited, aren't we?
08:52Yes.
08:53We found a dog.
08:55Oh, yes, good.
08:59And his name is Georgie.
09:03I love him.
09:05He's a Westie.
09:06He is just a sweetheart.
09:09He has that really nice mixture between independence, but when you're sitting down in the evening, he loves to come
09:16over for a fuss.
09:17Good.
09:17So, do we like the sound of Georgie?
09:19We do like the sound of Georgie.
09:21Oh, yes.
09:22Yes.
09:23Yes.
09:23Are you ready to meet Georgie?
09:25Yay!
09:26Let's go.
09:28I'm excited.
09:30You don't need to be nervous.
09:33Georgie is definitely not kind of a small dog with a small personality.
09:37He has got a very, very big personality.
09:39He is a bit of a cool dude.
09:41He got the hairstyle for it.
09:45He's a good boy.
09:47Georgie has had a busy life.
09:49He's been moved from abroad to the UK and now he's coming to Kennel.
09:53So, yeah, we definitely really need to get this guy at home.
09:56He doesn't deserve to be here at all.
09:58Yeah, it breaks my heart.
10:00You ready? You've got to find it.
10:03Georgie is very fun, but he does like to do his own thing and he knows his own mind.
10:09He is honestly such a sweetheart.
10:11Aren't you? Yes.
10:14You can't help but fall in love with him straight away.
10:22Georgie!
10:23So, we're going over here.
10:27Georgie!
10:29Ruby Rose is a really amazing person and her biggest superpower is that she knows how to make people smile,
10:36how to make people giggle and she likes that and I like that about her because it breaks the ice
10:41for us wherever we go.
10:44Let's go!
10:46Your house!
10:48We're going in the house, yeah.
10:51It's always been really easy for her to make friends when she was smaller, but now that she's growing up,
10:56the dynamic is changing.
11:00Oh, my God!
11:02It's very nice.
11:06I find that her awareness of Down syndrome has changed a little.
11:11Before it was something she was quite proud of and positive about, but obviously moving into her teenage years,
11:18she's assuming that those things are not such a good thing for her.
11:24Oh, Dorothy!
11:26Yeah!
11:27Are you ready? Look, we can put this here just in case he likes it.
11:32Yeah.
11:32Then maybe we could sit down there.
11:34What do you think?
11:35It's great.
11:36And he doesn't feel frightened.
11:40You know, she might get upset and say,
11:43I don't like Down syndrome, it's breaking my heart.
11:46Because, like anybody else, she wants people to see the best of her.
11:57She started to be concerned that other people are looking at her Down syndrome first, not Ruby Rose.
12:09When it's staring me, I'm a bit sad.
12:14You feel sad when people stare at you?
12:17Yeah.
12:19Yes.
12:20Have a quick hug.
12:22Nervous.
12:23Nervous.
12:25Don't feel nervous.
12:26Yes.
12:26Yeah.
12:27He might be a bit nervous meeting you as well.
12:31It has a knock-on effect with her confidence.
12:34And so to go over and speak to somebody is more difficult for her.
12:39But I think having a dog will help open up a window for people to approach her more
12:44than her always having to be the person to go and, you know, talk to other people.
12:49Because dogs really bring people together.
12:52Oh, my God.
12:54Georgie.
12:55Georgie, where are you?
12:59The dog is coming, OK?
13:01All right.
13:02This is your moment to shine.
13:04You've got this, mate.
13:05Haven't you, Georgie?
13:06How much do you love dogs?
13:08Happy and my heart.
13:12Check out here.
13:13Potentially a new family in here.
13:22Max.
13:24Let's make a look.
13:26Max.
13:27Dog trainer Sandy is hoping to find the perfect match for Max.
13:32Max, spin.
13:35That's not spin.
13:37Do you feel a bit of pressure for Max to be kind of doing as you say?
13:40Yeah, a little bit of pressure.
13:42Because you're a dog trainer, your dog should be perfect.
13:45But right now he's not quite ready.
13:47He just winks at me.
13:48He's a charmer.
13:51Is that your new friend?
13:53Is that going to be your new friend?
13:56Come.
13:57Good boy.
13:58Hiya.
13:59Hiya. How are you?
14:00Yo, hi.
14:00Yeah, we're all good.
14:01Welcome to Woodgree.
14:04That's Max.
14:05Hello.
14:06Has he got a bow tie on?
14:08He does have a bow tie.
14:09He's come dressed up.
14:10Yeah, he has.
14:11I love that.
14:11First date, you know.
14:12Are you here for a girlfriend?
14:14Maybe.
14:16Max is a very affectionate dog.
14:18As soon as there's another dog, it's like his whole world lights up.
14:20Like, oh, another dog.
14:22And he goes crazy.
14:23We don't want him to come on too strong.
14:27So do we need a strong, confident woman for him?
14:29Yeah.
14:30Put him in his place a little bit, you know?
14:35Come on, Georgie.
14:37Can we have a great boy?
14:39Hey.
14:43Hello.
14:44Hello.
14:44Are you all right?
14:45Who are we coming this way?
14:47Dorothy.
14:48Come on then.
14:49Georgie.
14:50He's like, no.
14:52Well, I'm going to let him off and then he can come to you when he's ready.
14:55Yeah, yeah, don't worry.
14:55We're fine.
14:55We'll let him find his way to us.
14:57Yeah.
14:58We'll be.
14:58He'll come when he's ready.
15:00Enjoy.
15:00He's just having a good sniff, Ruby Rose.
15:03Hello.
15:07Georgie.
15:10Don't worry.
15:11When he's ready, you'll come and say hi.
15:14Yeah?
15:14Yes.
15:16Oh, that's the right way to go about it.
15:19They've been doing lots and lots of practice with other people's dogs.
15:22Have they?
15:23They've been purposely going for walks so they can interact with other people's dogs.
15:26Impressed.
15:28Dorothy.
15:28Dorothy.
15:29Dorothy.
15:30Dorothy.
15:30Dorothy.
15:32Come on.
15:33Please say hello.
15:36I think he's quite excited to be here.
15:41Do you want to go and say hi to him?
15:43Yeah.
15:43Go on then.
15:44Maybe go nearer to him and see if he'd like a treat.
15:48Okay.
15:49Dorothy.
15:50Hello.
15:52Hey.
15:54Yeah.
15:54There.
15:58Did he eat it?
15:59No.
16:00No?
16:01Maybe he's a bit nervous, isn't he?
16:05Do you want to see if he wants to play with a toy maybe?
16:07Yeah.
16:08Come on then.
16:08Shall we open the box and see if there's anything he likes?
16:12Georgie.
16:13Look.
16:15Whoa.
16:16See if he likes that one.
16:18Georgie.
16:22Hello mate.
16:24I'll leave you there for a minute.
16:27Doggy.
16:28Doggy.
16:29Doggy.
16:30Sit.
16:32Sit.
16:36Aw.
16:37Aw.
16:38Aw.
16:39She's desperate to play with him in some way, isn't she?
16:42And he's just not interested.
16:45Maybe he doesn't like toys.
16:47He might not be a toy doggy.
16:48No.
16:52As a parent, you want to do everything that you can to make your child happy.
16:58Hi.
16:58Here's Ruby Rose.
16:59Hello.
17:02Hey.
17:04Look.
17:05Snack.
17:08When Ruby Rose says she's not happy about her Down syndrome, it makes me feel sad for her
17:14because there's some things you just can't do. Some things are just the way they are and
17:19you have to let that person process those things and that's what I do with Ruby Rose.
17:26I'll go over here, Ruby Rose, and you have a little bit of time with him.
17:30If struggling to make friends with something she's feeling right now, I try not to focus on it.
17:36Or switch it around and we talk about the positive things.
17:40What superpowers she has as a person with Down syndrome, that makes her feel happy.
17:46Oh, I think he only wants to follow mummy at the moment.
17:54See if he'll go with you, Ruby Rose.
17:58To see her, you know, manoeuvring around all the challenges that even I find difficult, I just feel really proud
18:04of her.
18:05So, yeah, she's amazing.
18:10Jordy!
18:12Jordy!
18:13See if you can get him to play with you, Ruby Rose.
18:17Jordy!
18:17Good boy! Go! Go, Georgie!
18:22Look!
18:25Hey!
18:26Hey!
18:27Hey, Jordy.
18:29It's okay.
18:29Hey!
18:30Oh, bless her.
18:32She recognised that he was feeling really sad.
18:36Yeah.
18:36And she stopped trying to play and she's gone immediately down to give him reassurance.
18:40That's so lovely.
18:42Hey!
18:43Hey!
18:44It's okay.
18:46Yeah.
18:47Yeah, don't you?
18:50She's very, very gentle with him.
18:53We don't see a lot of children that are that intuitive.
18:56And that can show empathy like that.
18:58Hey-o!
19:00Give...
19:00Oh, you're a brave boy, yeah?
19:06Oh, he's gonna be an up and a down.
19:12He just likes running around and exploring, I think. Doesn't he?
19:15Yeah.
19:16Yeah. What are you thinking? Do you want to tell me? He's a bit sad to happen. You feel
19:27he's a bit sad? He's nervous. He could be nervous. Yeah, it's a big deal meeting new
19:32people. You're OK to be patient with him and give him time, yeah? Yes. What did you like
19:41about him? He's his hairdo. His hairdo? He's quite a little geezer, isn't he? Yeah.
19:49Did you want to go for a bit of a walk with him? That would be nice, wouldn't it? There's
19:53a lot to think about with Ruby Rose. Is she going to like this doggy because she likes
19:57this doggy? Is she going to like this doggy just because there's a doggy being presented?
20:02Good boy. There we go. We're going to have a long chat and then we have a sleep and then
20:09we see what we remember tomorrow, don't we? Yeah.
20:18Oh, hi. Oh, goodness me. Hello. Hello. This is Max. Hello, Max. I'm Sandy. Sandy. You
20:27guys are looking for a friend? Yeah. Or maybe a date. We'll see. A date? Yeah, maybe. A date?
20:34How old is he and how long have you had him? He's a year and a half. I've had him
20:37since
20:38eight weeks. The earliest I could get him, you know? This was Max when he was five weeks
20:42old. When I held him for the first time, it was like an instant yes. I love him so much.
20:48I love him with everything I've got. You're in that awkward adolescent stage, aren't you?
20:53He is. Yeah, he is. So why do you think he needs a friend then?
20:57Recently, he's been a little bit like, um, anxious being left on his own. You just constantly
21:02be up and down, up and down, up and down. Max is getting a little bit of anxiety. It's creeping
21:08in. So I don't want to leave him knowing that he's stressed. It makes me feel upset.
21:15He needs a companion to tell him that actually it's okay to be all right. Yeah. I'm hoping he'll
21:20relax more and I can like not worry so much. What are you hoping for then that we can find
21:25you
21:25today? What kind of dog? German Shepherds, like all types of Labradors.
21:29Bigger dogs then? Yeah, bigger dogs. I just want them to like each other and play with each other
21:34and get tired and lie down next to each other, you know? Right then. Let's do it.
21:39Maffi! Good boy. See you soon. See you later.
21:45I think Sandy would really love to find him a companion that will play and bring Max's fun side up.
21:53Really, the only thing he's looking for is it's got to be big. Do we have a largest lady? We
21:59have
21:59Mavis. Oh, she's the best. She came in as a stray. We don't 100% know what she is,
22:07but we think she's maybe an Akbash cross. What's that? They're basically kind of a livestock
22:12guarding breed. They're very chill, serene. Mavis is anything but chill and serene though, isn't she?
22:20She is. Yeah. I think I get the impression she's a bit of a failed livestock guarding breed.
22:23Is she? Yeah. Hello, madam.
22:30Good girlie. Hey! Hey, you big soppy girl. Oh, you're insane.
22:42Mavis is a gentle giant. She is absolutely huge, but she's just a big, goofy puppy, really.
22:50She thinks she's a small dog, to be honest. Yay! Oh, my God. Can you do it?
22:57We don't know much about her history. From getting to know her, we've found that she's a really
23:02lovely girl. She's really affectionate. She loves the dogs. She gets joy out of being with them.
23:07So it would be nice if she could live with another dog.
23:11We're definitely looking for someone from Mavis who especially loves big breeds or giant breeds,
23:15who aren't going to be put off by her size and how much space she's going to take up in
23:19their house.
23:21What are you looking at, Max?
23:30Oh, that's what you're looking at.
23:34That's a big dog.
23:42Hello, Bella.
23:44It's early days for newcomer, Bella, as she navigates kennel life and begins her journey to a fitter future.
23:51Bella came from an active household, but due to medical reasons from the owner,
23:56that did get reduced quite significantly.
24:00Colleagues that are not mentally simulated do get severely stressed in kennels.
24:04Because they are just such a clever breed, they need a bit more brain work.
24:09Come in.
24:10So we're going to try and see if she wants to do any gentle agility.
24:13No, she's like I just attached to my leg.
24:16I'm just going to try some hoopers with Bella.
24:19Regardless of Bella does it perfectly or not, it's just important just to kind of help with her
24:23physical fitness.
24:24Come in.
24:25Yes.
24:26Good girl.
24:29Oh, we nearly done it.
24:30And just to get her out and enjoying life really and not having to be kind of
24:35worried about kennel life as much.
24:37You went through one hoop.
24:39We've got to start somewhere, haven't we?
24:44Max, let's go up here.
24:49There we go.
24:51Oh, my God.
24:53Oh.
24:55It's okay.
24:57Good lad.
24:59Our bond is very strong.
25:01If I leave him for like five minutes, it's like, where are you going?
25:07He needs to know where I am.
25:09It's all right.
25:12It's okay.
25:14The first time, I noticed he was upset because every time I'd come home, he would just sleep.
25:21And I thought, this is strange, Luke.
25:22Why is he just sleeping when I come home?
25:24And then I set the camera up and there it was.
25:27He was just at the window.
25:28He wouldn't settle.
25:29He wouldn't sleep.
25:30And it wasn't pleasant because I could just see that he really wasn't happy.
25:35Oh, you're stressy, aren't you?
25:41I want Max to be happy.
25:43The reason why we're here today is to just find him a friend.
25:49Having another dog at the house, it's going to make him feel a lot more relaxed and calm.
25:53I hope it's going to change his life.
25:57I think this could be the one, you know.
25:59I think these could be the ones that say yes to Mavis.
26:02Here she comes.
26:03Here we go, Max.
26:04Who's this coming?
26:07Good girl.
26:10Hiya.
26:11Good boy.
26:13She's massive.
26:14I know I'm there.
26:15Mavis.
26:16Very happy, waggy tails.
26:17You won't be loved.
26:18Oh, I think Mavis fancies me.
26:21Oh, look at his face.
26:23He's ready to go.
26:24Oh, my God.
26:25Shake it off.
26:26Good boy.
26:27I've got my work cut off from here.
26:28Do you like him?
26:30I think he quite likes you too.
26:32We've got some very happy, waggy tails and flirty ears.
26:37Oh, my goodness.
26:37Max has come to life.
26:39They love each other.
26:41Right, go on then, guys.
26:43Please don't break us.
26:46Whoa, babe.
26:47Oh, my God.
26:49She's so good for me.
26:51This is exactly what I was hoping to see.
26:53She's playing with Max the exact same way he loves to play with dogs.
26:59I'll bop you with my bottom.
27:01Whoa, careful.
27:02Careful, Mavis.
27:04The thing I'm worried about right now is Max not being able to say to her,
27:09like, I've had enough.
27:11Guys.
27:12You do need one of the dogs to sort of stop playing and calm the situation down.
27:17Otherwise, it just keeps getting more and more exciting.
27:20Oh, my God.
27:21Yeah, the only thing we'll be managing this in the home.
27:24Yeah, definitely.
27:26There's two very big dogs wrestling in your living room.
27:32It's a lot of dog.
27:34They're getting on well here, but it's not a guarantee this will help Max when he's at home.
27:39I think it'd be a good time to get Sandy down to come and meet you, Mavis, and see what
27:43he thinks.
27:44Would you like to go down to the pen?
27:46Yeah.
27:47Yeah?
27:47Yeah.
27:47Come on.
27:51Good luck.
27:52All right, thank you.
27:53Not that you need it.
28:00I wonder what dog they're going to get us.
28:03It will be the little fur baby.
28:05Join the dog walkers on the beach.
28:08Childhood sweethearts Lorraine and Daddy are ready to welcome a dog on their coastal adventure.
28:14So, we both have matching dry robes.
28:16I want to get my dog a matching dry robe.
28:18Same pattern and everything.
28:20You can walk it out with a dry robe.
28:24My son's trying to come out.
28:26It's going to be a good day.
28:28Fingers crossed.
28:32Hiya.
28:32Hello.
28:33How are you?
28:34You good?
28:34I'm literally so excited.
28:36Where is it you've come from?
28:38Bournemouth.
28:38We moved down there four years ago.
28:40Cockneys originally, yeah.
28:42I was a black cab driver.
28:44Got a good rating?
28:45Yeah, I was a good cab.
28:49As a Londoner, it's quite nice to say, you know,
28:52your husband's a London cab driver.
28:54Has he got the badge on?
28:55The green badge?
28:56When I got the green badge, I was like, I'm a green badge, look.
29:01And I was, yeah, just chuffed to bits.
29:03I was very proud.
29:04You feel like you've become a somebody, do you know what I mean?
29:09Hey, have you ever had anyone, like, famous?
29:12Yeah, I've had Harry Hill.
29:15You've had Harry Hill?
29:16Harry Hill, yeah.
29:17Yeah.
29:18Real nice guy, lived over Battersea Bridge.
29:20Best person I've ever picked up.
29:22Peter Crouch, good man.
29:24Amy Charles, who was in The Only Way is Essex.
29:26She was nice, actually, really nice.
29:29Alan Carr and Fabio Capello.
29:33The taxi's in the background, seeing me taxi there.
29:36Yeah.
29:36I've had Liam Gallagher in...
29:38You've had Liam Gallagher in your black cap?
29:42Yeah.
29:42I let him off the phone.
29:43You what?
29:44I'd have charged him double.
29:45So, I let him off the phone, he's like, yeah, yeah,
29:48I'll get my secretary to write you.
29:50I never heard anything back.
29:52Can't knock the fella.
30:01Who's that?
30:02Hello.
30:03Good girl, Mavis.
30:04Yeah?
30:05Come on.
30:06Come with me, Mavis.
30:07Hello.
30:09Oh, they're like, oh, this is my dad.
30:11Mavis, meet my dad.
30:13Good girl.
30:16Being in the pen with two big dogs is very different to watching it.
30:20Yeah, yeah.
30:21He'll quickly realise how much space they're going to take up.
30:24Oh.
30:24Set.
30:27Yes, manners training is something we need to work on, isn't it, Mavis?
30:32Mavis wants to say hello.
30:34Max.
30:35Come.
30:36Up, up.
30:37Whoa, there we go.
30:39No.
30:39No.
30:41I wonder if he's thinking it's too much.
30:51Good boy.
30:52I know.
30:53I know.
30:53It's your dad, isn't it?
30:55They do match each other really quite nicely.
30:57Yeah.
30:57It's quite nice to see because he was quite nervous in here.
31:01Yeah.
31:02Set.
31:04Set.
31:05Yes.
31:06Good girl.
31:07Well done.
31:08So you can be clever.
31:10Good girl.
31:11We don't know.
31:12Hello, gorgeous boy.
31:14You're being good.
31:15Yeah.
31:15Such a good boy.
31:17I think he's trying to calm them down and see if they've got the potential to settle
31:22in the home.
31:24How are you feeling?
31:26We've got a little bit of work to do.
31:27Exactly.
31:28It's, you know, the...
31:29I think the word's potential, isn't it?
31:31There's the beginnings of a really lovely relationship.
31:37I really enjoyed my meet with Mavis.
31:39I think Max enjoyed it even more than me.
31:41He's completely tired now.
31:43He's completely done.
31:45Mavis is a giant.
31:47When I first saw her walk in the pen, I thought, wow, how is she going to fit through the
31:51front
31:51door, to be honest?
31:53Yeah.
31:53If you're happy, maybe take them out for a walk.
31:56Yeah.
31:56See how they get on.
31:57Let's take them for a walk.
31:57Yeah?
31:58Let's do that.
31:59Good.
32:00Out we come, guys.
32:03When they first met each other, I think the energy match was perfect.
32:06But then, whether it's too much, I don't know.
32:10We're going to have to get you some new harnesses, aren't we?
32:12That's going to be something to think about for me.
32:18So, you're here for a dog?
32:20Yes.
32:21Yeah?
32:23I'm glad you're excited.
32:25Some people look terrified.
32:26Oh, I'm not terrified.
32:27I am super excited.
32:28Can't wait.
32:29So, what kind of dog would fit into this perfectly, then?
32:31Well, it's a happy dog, really.
32:32We want a happy dog, don't we?
32:34Just not too big and not too small.
32:36But anything in between all that is absolutely fine with us.
32:40Do you have a preference to age of dog?
32:42I'd rather it be younger, I think, than older.
32:45I don't want to have to go through the loss of a dog.
32:47Yeah. Yeah.
32:48Er, we've gone through and up, so not too old.
32:52OK.
32:52We're in an ideal place to really give a dog 24 hours a day.
32:57Yeah.
32:57Yeah.
32:59Daddy doesn't work now.
33:01I had a seizure at home, and then they told me that I had a brain tumour.
33:07It's on the front lobe, so you can sort of see the skull.
33:11Yeah.
33:11But they can't remove it, because the bottom of it is in a place where they can't cut it
33:16away.
33:17I've had three operations.
33:19I had chemo and radio failure, which lasted a whole year.
33:22And there's been hardly any growth now since the treatment, and that's all we can hope
33:28for every single time.
33:29Yeah.
33:29Yeah.
33:29Yeah.
33:31Yeah.
33:31I was a black cab driver for 15 years.
33:34Oh, wow.
33:34So, yeah.
33:35But once I had a brain tumour, your licence gets taken off you.
33:39When you've got out of hospital, it's like, we've been in hospital for quite a while, and
33:42it's like, right, let's go for a walk.
33:43And we had good intentions, and then we literally got, like, five minutes up the road, and he's
33:47like, I need to go home.
33:48Yeah.
33:48That's hard for someone who's so energetic.
33:51Yeah.
33:51Yeah.
33:52If I've got a dog, the dog will live me right up.
33:54Yeah.
33:54The dog will just look at me with them sad eyes, and I think, I'll get the dog out.
33:58You're not going back to bed.
33:59Yeah.
34:00Exactly.
34:01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
34:01But what we want, to get walking, to get out, is exactly what we want.
34:06We'll go and see what we can find for you.
34:08Oh, lovely.
34:09Cheers, guys.
34:10See you soon.
34:11Bye.
34:15We just met lovely Lorraine and Danny.
34:18Aaron loved them because they're both Londoners.
34:21Londoners through and through.
34:23They live near Bournemouth now, so we need to find them.
34:27The perfect beach dog.
34:28OK, then let's have a look at who we've got.
34:31We have got the amazing Bella.
34:38Bella's definitely reacting a lot better in kennels.
34:41She just really wants all the fuss, all the attention, and you just can't help but smile when you see
34:46her.
34:47Bella would be a great companion for someone, a great walking buddy.
34:51She absolutely loves being out in nature, and I think she'd definitely make a good cuddle buddy for someone that
34:57she can be there for as well.
34:59I love Bella.
35:01I think she's absolutely cracking.
35:05Oh, edge of the sea, edge of the sea.
35:08I'm so excited.
35:10OK, so we have found a dog.
35:14It's a female.
35:17She is called Bella.
35:19OK.
35:21And she's border collie.
35:22That was on the top of my list.
35:25She's only come into us because of the ill health of her owner.
35:28They're in that hospital and unable to walk her for quite some time.
35:33Because of that, she tires quite quickly at the moment.
35:36OK.
35:36But the potential is there for, you know, two, three-hour walks.
35:40Yeah, yeah.
35:40It's a little bit of a project.
35:42Yeah, I love that.
35:43Yeah, that's right up my street, that is.
35:45Yeah, yeah.
35:46Up he goes.
35:47It just sounds perfect.
35:49Brilliant.
35:49Follow Aaron.
35:50He will show you where to go.
35:52OK.
35:52Here we go.
35:53Good luck.
35:55Best get order in that dry robe.
35:57Oh, the dry robe.
35:58Oh, yeah.
35:59I'll be sending the photo, don't you worry.
36:01Can't wait.
36:05What is that? Bella, did they say?
36:06Bella, yeah. Bella.
36:08When I first met Danny, he had white tracks with bottoms on a pink jumper.
36:12Well, they were in style at the time.
36:13They were awful.
36:15You don't forget an outfit like that.
36:18It's never been not him from that moment.
36:21Yeah, all right.
36:23Danny's always been energetic, he's always worked hard.
36:27He is stronger than anyone I've ever met in my life.
36:31But after he had the tumour, everything changed in an instant.
36:35Literally, our whole lives.
36:41Thank you, sir.
36:44Oh, my God, it's so cute in here.
36:45When Danny was in the hospital, they came to collect his taxi,
36:50watching it drive away.
36:52That was terribly sad.
36:57It's hard.
36:58Yeah, the cab meant a lot to me.
37:00So to lose it, it was devastating.
37:03It just felt part of me, part of my identity.
37:10Some days, you just don't feel great, so you sort of shut the curtains,
37:14you don't really want to do anything.
37:17And I'm a great believer if something comes crashing down,
37:20it's how you recover from that,
37:22and how you get back to where you were before.
37:25And having a dog, this could be the new beginning.
37:29Board of Collie.
37:31Dead excited.
37:32I said Collie in my dad.
37:34What do you see?
37:36Did you get a ball out?
37:38Bring a couple of toys over.
37:41Oh, my God, she's coming.
37:42She's coming!
37:45Are you really excited?
37:47Waggy tail.
37:48Are you ready?
37:50Are you ready?
37:51Are we going to go up here?
37:55Oh, good girl.
37:58Hello.
37:59Hello.
38:00This is Bella.
38:01Hi, Bella.
38:02Hi, Bella.
38:03She's so wonderful.
38:04I'm going to let you off, and we'll leave you to it.
38:07All right, thank you.
38:08Enjoy.
38:11Oh, look at her.
38:13She just needs to suss out the place first, doesn't she?
38:16You're not going to let me go, are you?
38:18Bella.
38:23Bella.
38:25Hello, mate.
38:26Aww.
38:27She does have that little Collie stare of being a bit unsure.
38:30She does, yeah.
38:32Bella.
38:34Bella.
38:36Bella.
38:37She's just finding her bearings.
38:39Where you going?
38:43Thinking about it?
38:51Bella.
38:53Bella.
38:54Bella.
38:54Bella.
38:56Ball.
38:58Not getting in that one.
39:00It'd be nice to see her get a little bit more animated.
39:04Bella.
39:07I think I'll get him frying the ball, though.
39:09Play ball.
39:11No, you've got no interest in that.
39:14They just need to figure out what ticks in Bella's brain,
39:19if it's going to be food, toys.
39:21Where you going?
39:22Do you want to have a look in here?
39:23What's in there?
39:24What's in there?
39:26What's in there?
39:29I worry about Danny every day.
39:31He's always looked after us all.
39:33But now I work all day, and so it's a whole role reversal.
39:37And that must be hard.
39:38That's hard for him.
39:40Oh, Bella.
39:41I do worry if he feels a bit useless, a bit worthless.
39:45And I think that might be the reason the low days are more, or the curtains are often shut more
39:50than they're open.
39:54Bella.
39:55Oh!
39:58This is why I think if we have a dog, it would give Danny a real sense of purpose.
40:03And it, I just think it's, yeah, I think it would be amazing for him.
40:07Bella.
40:10Hello.
40:12Bring a toy over.
40:14Where's Danny gone?
40:20Like this one.
40:22What's he got?
40:26She's like, what are you doing?
40:28I'm not quite sure.
40:29Oh?
40:36Oh, that's lovely.
40:45She's literally, look at her, look at her following you.
40:47She's right by your leg as well, look.
40:49It's insane.
40:51She's literally like your shadow.
40:52It's ridiculous.
40:55Look at, oh my God, Danny, I can't even cope.
40:59Danny is now her shepherd.
41:01Yeah.
41:02This is my flock.
41:04Yeah.
41:05Look, she's just right by your side.
41:08When Bella started following him, and then walking beside him, I just felt then that Danny's just found his new
41:15best friend.
41:17It just gives you that new sense of purpose, that new sort of fight for life, if you like.
41:23A little sit down.
41:29Oh, I like belly rubs. Danny likes belly rubs.
41:35There we go.
41:35There we go.
41:36Oh, my goodness, look at this.
41:39Oh, look at that face.
41:44Oh.
41:45It's everything I dreamed of.
41:47I want him to have a companion when I'm at work, and he's at home.
41:52And for me, knowing that that is going to be happening, makes my heart sore.
42:00You're a little superstar, aren't you?
42:03You're literally going to live your best life.
42:18Max, come. This way. Come. Good boy.
42:23I wanted a dog to look after Max when I wasn't in the house.
42:27When I was watching Max with Mavis, my concern was, are they going to be too much for each other?
42:33I knew she was coming home with me. Just had to make it work, and we did.
42:38Mavis!
42:40I quite like living with a giant.
42:43They actually look out for each other. It's quite nice.
42:47When they're in the house, they're honestly quite calm.
42:49They just like to sleep a lot.
42:54One of my favourite things about them is, like, when we go out,
42:57when they play with each other, it's just the best thing.
42:59And they just chase each other, or if they love going in the water together.
43:07Honestly, getting Mavis has been really good for Max.
43:10He's been a lot more calm, he's less anxious.
43:13What this was all about was making Max happy.
43:15Him and Mavis now have got a good life together.
43:18They're just two happy dogs exploring the world.
43:27When you first saw him coming, how did you feel?
43:31Happy and joy.
43:33It was good, wasn't it? We liked him. When we first saw him, we thought, he's cute.
43:40After we left Georgie, we went out for a date.
43:44A date.
43:45And we had to think about what it would be like if we took him home.
43:49And we talked about all of the things that we felt when we met him.
43:55And I just didn't feel that there was that instant kind of heart-grab,
43:59you're for me, I'm for you kind of feeling for Ruby Rose.
44:05We really hope he finds a family that's right for him.
44:09But it was good because we learned a lot, didn't we?
44:13A lot, yeah.
44:15Since then, we've agreed on the kind of joggy that we like.
44:20A medium doggy...
44:22Yeah. ..likes to catch the ball.
44:25Catch the ball.
44:26But also likes to sit on the sofa and have cuddles.
44:31And there's two doggies.
44:32No, but we can't have two doggies, we can only have one doggie.
44:41When the lady brought Bella in, you could see in her face,
44:46like, it's a new situation for her.
44:47So you're a bit like, ooh, is she going to like us?
44:51And she sort of had a wander then came over.
44:54From now on in, straight away, it's definitely going to happen.
44:58Bella!
45:00How are you doing?
45:02Yeah, how are you?
45:04Being at home now with the dog,
45:06it's just made such a difference to us.
45:08Everything is just slotted into place.
45:13We get out more, we're doing a lot of walking.
45:15Bella follows Danny literally wherever he goes.
45:19She's not sure of the beach.
45:21Yeah.
45:22We were there the other weekend.
45:23She was in the water and then the wave came and she got a bit wet
45:26and then she looked at Danny and said,
45:28I can't believe you've done that to me.
45:33Before I got the dog, I would probably struggle.
45:36So by having the dog, you know, I'm not being funny,
45:38but I sort of talked to the dog as well.
45:40What have you been doing?
45:42She's making the low days go away.
45:44To know that he's not on his own all the time is massive for me
45:46because I know that he's got Bella there.
45:49She's changed our lives, I think.
45:51She is the final piece of the puzzle.
46:03Could adopting a rescue dog change your life?
