00:00Girls are of a mother's kind, and mothers always work selflessly.
00:04Sometimes for their parents, sometimes for their husbands, and other times for their children.
00:09Mothers never act solely for their own gain.
00:12That's why mothers are always special.
00:14Today's story beautifully illustrates this truth.
00:17It's the story of a seven-year-old girl named Ocean,
00:20a tale filled with quiet strength, love, and deep emotion.
00:24Hello friends, welcome to ScreenVille.
00:28The story begins in 1907, in a small village in Japan.
00:33It is winter, and the scene opens on an extremely poor family.
00:37A mother, father, siblings, grandmother, and the protagonist of our story, Little Ocean.
00:42Ocean is an adorable seven-year-old girl.
00:45They all sit together, happily sharing the meager food they have for the day.
00:49But Ocean's father is not happy.
00:51He looks deeply troubled.
00:53Suddenly, he declares, Ocean, I've decided, from now on, you will work.
00:58You'll serve as a maid in a wealthy household.
01:01But Ocean refuses.
01:03She wants to stay with her parents, go to school, and read books.
01:06Her mother and grandmother also don't want her to work at such a young age.
01:10Yet the family doesn't have enough rice to survive the winter.
01:12So her father insists on sending her away in exchange for two sacks of rice.
01:17When Ocean still refuses, her father loses his temper and tries to hit her.
01:22But her mother shields her.
01:24The helpless mother and grandmother can do nothing but cry.
01:27The next morning, Ocean's mother sits silently by the icy river, lost in sorrow.
01:32Ocean calls out to her repeatedly, but she doesn't respond.
01:36After some time, the mother faints, and villagers pull her out of the freezing water.
01:40The heartbreaking truth is this.
01:43Unable to bear the thought of bringing another child into such a life of poverty,
01:47Ocean's mother had stepped into the freezing river, hoping to lose the unborn baby.
01:52The poor mother saw no other way.
01:54Witnessing this, little Oisin is heartbroken.
01:57She decides she must stand by her family and agrees to work.
02:00That night, she wakes up and tells her mother,
02:02I'll go work tomorrow.
02:04Her mother refuses, saying she won't send her away.
02:06But Ocean is determined.
02:08Mom, all that matters to me is that you live.
02:11I'll work, but please never do that again, she says, resting her head on her mother's lap.
02:17Her mother then sings her a lullaby, gently lulling her to sleep.
02:20Today is the day Ocean has to leave.
02:23Before leaving, she makes a little owl out of straw for her brother,
02:27something she learned from her grandma.
02:29Soon, a few people arrive with sacks of rice.
02:32In exchange for that rice, Ocean will have to work.
02:35And now, it's time for her to go.
02:37So, her mother dresses her in a kimono that she stitched herself.
02:40Her mother tells her from now on, she'll be on her own.
02:43She must take care of herself.
02:45But if at any time it feels too hard to bear, she should come back home.
02:49Her mother will always be waiting right here for her.
02:52Saying this, her mother can no longer hold back her tears.
02:56Her grandma puts a coin in her hand and says,
02:59I can't give you more than this.
03:00Then she hugs Ocean tightly.
03:02Today, this little girl is leaving her home to work.
03:05Leaving her parents behind is heartbreaking for Ocean.
03:09And it hurts her mother just as much.
03:11Even though her father is sending her off to work,
03:13watching her leave is too much for him too.
03:16He breaks down crying.
03:17And so, with a heavy heart, Ocean sets out to begin her new life as a worker.
03:22From today, Ocean's working life begins.
03:25Early in the morning, she wakes up and draws water from the well.
03:29Then she's told to light the cooking fire.
03:31She does so and helps with the cooking.
03:34Once the food is ready, the staff gathers to eat.
03:37Ocean is starving.
03:38Seeing such delicious food makes her very happy.
03:41But she doesn't know.
03:42She's not allowed to eat.
03:44The lady of the house drags her outside and tells her to leave the room.
03:47When Ocean fails to step off the expensive mat properly, she is beaten.
03:52Then she is told to clean the entire house.
03:54Even with an empty stomach, Ocean does all the work.
03:57Later, she is finally told she can eat.
04:01Overjoyed, she goes to the kitchen only to find there is no rice left in the bowl.
04:06When she tells the lady, she points to the few grains stuck on the edge of the pot and tells
04:11her to eat that.
04:12Pushing aside her sadness, Ocean eats those scraps with deep satisfaction.
04:17Ocean longs to study.
04:19One day, while walking with the child of the house, she sees some children reading books.
04:24That sight fills her with joy.
04:27Absentmindedly, she starts walking with them towards the school, carrying the child on her back.
04:32But soon, the lady calls her back.
04:34She returns home and hands the child over to its mother.
04:37Her back hurts from carrying the child so long.
04:40And then she's told to clean all the child's clothes.
04:43When she starts washing them near the well, the lady comes and hits her again for cleaning dirty clothes so
04:49close to the well.
04:50She is then sent to wash them in a river.
04:52On such a freezing day, she has to wash clothes in the icy, bone-chilling water of the river.
04:58It's extremely hard.
05:00But she has no choice.
05:02Every day, she endures this kind of hard labor.
05:05That woman of the house has placed such a heavy burden of labor on this little girl.
05:09Now, Oshin has grown used to the hardship.
05:12She even starts finishing all the tasks before being told.
05:15Days were passing like this.
05:17Then one day, that woman suddenly accuses Oshin of stealing.
05:20She claims that a coin has gone missing.
05:23Oshin keeps saying again and again that she didn't steal anything.
05:26But the woman refuses to listen.
05:28Not only does she accuse her of theft, but she even starts checking her by stripping off all her clothes.
05:33That's when she finds the coin.
05:35The one Oshin's grandmother had given her.
05:37Oshin pleads that it wasn't stolen.
05:39That she brought it from home.
05:40But no one listens.
05:42Humiliated and furious, Oshin storms out of the house.
05:46Crying, she starts walking aimlessly through the heavy snowfall in the biting cold.
05:51Eventually, she collapses unconscious on the snow.
05:54That's when a hunter boy finds her in the forest.
05:57When Oshin regains consciousness, she sees the boy sitting beside her playing a harmonica.
06:02His name is Sakko.
06:04Sakko gently tells her not to worry, that she will be fine.
06:07He offers her some hot soup.
06:10Soon, Matsuzo arrives with Sakko and explains everything to Oshin.
06:14He tells her how Sakko found her yesterday, brought her back, and stayed up all night to care for her.
06:19Gratefulness fills Oshin's heart.
06:21She feels a deep sense of respect and thankfulness towards Sakko.
06:26Meanwhile, back at the house where Oshin worked, it's revealed that it was actually the woman's own son who had
06:32taken the coin to pay at a shop.
06:34Oshin had not stolen anything.
06:36Even after finding this out, the woman feels no regret, no remorse for falsely accusing Oshin.
06:42The next morning, Matsuzo offers to take Oshin back to her home.
06:46But Oshin doesn't want to go.
06:47She has nowhere to return to.
06:49Matsuzo refuses at first, but then Sakko says she can stay.
06:53Actually, Sakko himself is hiding.
06:55He's a deserter from war, and Matsuzo is helping to keep him hidden.
06:59Taking care of a child puts them at risk, but Sakko cannot turn her away.
07:04Oshin thanks him deeply for letting her stay.
07:06She tells him how she was falsely accused of theft.
07:09That's when Sakko asks her,
07:11Do you know what your name means?
07:13Oshin means faith, truth.
07:15Your name is beautiful.
07:16And just like your name, you must live a beautiful, meaningful life.
07:20From then on, Oshin always stayed with Sakko.
07:23One day, Sakko suddenly becomes very ill.
07:26Oshin doesn't understand what's wrong.
07:28Matsuzo explains,
07:29Sakko is a former soldier.
07:31He went to war, and one of the bullets is still inside his body.
07:36Witnessing death all around,
07:38Sakko was deeply traumatized and ran away from the battlefield.
07:42That night, Oshin takes care of him tenderly,
07:45pressing cool cloths to his forehead.
07:47A deep, affectionate bond grows between Oshin and Sakko.
07:51One day, she sees Sakko reading a book.
07:53She tells him how much she wishes to go to school.
07:55Moved, Sakko starts teaching her.
07:58He shows her the alphabet, teaches her to read and write.
08:02One day, while reading a war poem together,
08:04Oshin asks,
08:05You were shot in the war.
08:06You must be proud, right?
08:08Sakko gently explains,
08:10To win a war, you must take many lives.
08:13War can never be a good path.
08:15In this way, Sakko helps Oshin understand the deeper truths of life.
08:19Now, Oshin is very happy living with Sakko.
08:23She has never felt such joy,
08:25living with two strangers who treated her with such warmth.
08:28The whole winter passes in this warmth and happiness.
08:31But now, it's time for Oshin to return home.
08:34She doesn't want to leave.
08:36She's truly happy here.
08:37Why should she go?
08:39But Sakko cannot keep her.
08:40She has a long life ahead,
08:42and she must live it well.
08:44He cannot let this little girl's life be wasted away in the mountains.
08:47Sakko gives her his harmonica and says,
08:50Always keep this with you and live your life well.
08:53Then he lifts her onto his back and starts the journey to take her home.
08:57As they approach the village and prepare to say goodbye,
08:59a group of army men arrive.
09:01They immediately recognize Sakko as the deserter from the war
09:05and try to arrest him and Oshin as well.
09:08But Sakko refuses to let Oshin be arrested.
09:11He tells her,
09:12Live your life well.
09:13Then, as he tries to escape,
09:15the soldiers shoot him.
09:16And just like that, Sakko dies,
09:19shot by the very people he once served.
09:21With a heart full of sorrow and pain,
09:24Oshin returns home.
09:26Her mother is overjoyed to see her child after so many days.
09:30But her father, upon seeing her,
09:32starts hitting her.
09:33Because of her theft,
09:35the family had been humiliated.
09:36They have even returned the sack of rice they were given.
09:39Though her mother wants to take her inside,
09:42her father doesn't allow her to enter the house.
09:44Oshin spends the entire cold night sleeping outside.
09:48The next morning,
09:49a woman comes to take Oshin's little sister away.
09:52She is to be adopted by another family.
09:55Oshin refuses to let her sister go.
09:57But the woman tries to explain to her gently.
10:00Her sister will grow up to be a good person in that family.
10:03Here, they can't even manage two meals a day.
10:05Oshin sits outside with a heavy heart.
10:08There's nothing she can do.
10:09The next day, she sets out again in search of work at a new house.
10:13But when she gets there,
10:15she learns that they don't need any help.
10:17The lady of the house, named Rooney,
10:19also tells her that they don't require any workers.
10:22Saying this, they go back inside.
10:25But Oshin refuses to return home without work.
10:28So even as night falls,
10:30she stays seated in front of the house.
10:32In the middle of the night,
10:33the daughter-in-law of the house,
10:35Mino,
10:35comes out and tells Oshin
10:37that perhaps someone gave her the wrong information.
10:39No help is needed here.
10:41Mino gives her some money
10:42and tells her to spend the night at an inn
10:44and then return to her village.
10:45But Oshin refuses to take the money.
10:48She says she won't leave without working.
10:50Her family was promised five sacks of rice
10:52and returned for two years of work.
10:54That rice is desperately needed.
10:56Her family is starving.
10:58She says she can do all kinds of work
11:00and pleads with them to give her a chance.
11:02Rooney overhears everything
11:03and decides to let Oshin stay in their home.
11:06Oshin is overjoyed and thanks them sincerely.
11:08The next morning, she wakes up very early
11:10and goes to the kitchen to start working.
11:12She wants to cook rice,
11:14but the housemaid tells her not to do that.
11:16Oshin is just a little girl.
11:18Still, Oshin cooks the rice by herself.
11:20Then she wants to do more.
11:21She wants to wash clothes.
11:23But again, the maid tells her not to do anything.
11:25Though she had done all these tasks in the previous house,
11:28here, she isn't required to.
11:30And strangely, not being allowed to work makes Oshin feel sad.
11:34After that, Oshin starts taking Mino's little son out for walks.
11:38One day, she sees a girl her age named Kao.
11:41Kao is actually the daughter of this household, Mino's daughter.
11:44A maid from the house is accompanying her to school.
11:47Oshin asks,
11:48Can't you go to school by yourself?
11:50Kao doesn't like that comment at all.
11:52She leaves without saying a word.
11:54Later, Oshin notices one of Kao's books left on the table.
11:57Oshin loves to read, so she picks up the book and starts reading it.
12:01Just then, someone calls her to do chores.
12:03So she keeps the book with her and goes to work.
12:05When Kao returns from school and can't find the book,
12:08she starts asking everyone.
12:10Eventually, she sees it with Oshin.
12:12Since Oshin took the book without asking,
12:15Kao calls her a thief.
12:17Mino feels hurt by Oshin's behavior.
12:19Kao's father tells his wife that a thief shouldn't be kept in their house.
12:24Oshin steps in and says she didn't steal the book.
12:27She just wanted to read it.
12:28But no one can believe that a maid like Oshin can actually read.
12:31So Rooney tells her to read the book aloud.
12:34Oshin begins reading it beautifully.
12:36And everyone is shocked to hear how clearly and fluently she reads.
12:40Then Rooney tells her,
12:41Oshin, people already assume that maids are guilty by nature.
12:45So from now on, be very careful with such things.
12:49Oshin has now become close with everyone in the house.
12:52They don't make her do much work.
12:53And they give her plenty of food.
12:55She's doing well here.
12:57One day, she is playing the harmonica that Sako gave her.
13:00Kao sees it, takes it from her, and starts playing it.
13:03Then she says,
13:04I'm taking this.
13:05My mother will pay you for it.
13:07But Oshin refuses to give it away.
13:09Even if you brought me all the money in the world,
13:12I wouldn't sell this.
13:13It's a gift from Sako.
13:14It's the last memory I have of him.
13:17Kao becomes angry, pushes Oshin,
13:19and tries to break the harmonica by kicking it.
13:21In a panic, Oshin shoves her away and picks up the harmonica.
13:25But Kao falls down and loses consciousness.
13:28Now Oshin is in serious trouble.
13:30Kao's father finds out.
13:32Not only has Oshin pushed his daughter and knocked her unconscious,
13:35but she also once ran away from her previous home
13:37and was seen with a man who was a deserter.
13:40Someone considered a traitor.
13:41He tells his mother that Oshin must be thrown out of the house.
13:45Oshin says,
13:46Yes, I made a mistake.
13:47I pushed Kao.
13:48But please don't insult Sako.
13:50He was a kind man.
13:51He gave me shelter and taught me how to read.
13:53He fled from war because war takes lives
13:55and forces people to kill others.
13:57War is not the answer.
13:59Rooney tells Oshin,
14:00Kao will recover.
14:01But because such a serious problem happened,
14:04no one will be able to maintain a good relationship with you.
14:06You can't stay in the same house anymore.
14:08So Rooney decides to arrange for Oshin to work for another family.
14:12On the other side,
14:13Kao regains consciousness.
14:15The housemaid gives her a little owl made of grass,
14:18something Oshin had made for her.
14:20She hears that Oshin is leaving the house.
14:22Upon hearing this,
14:24Kao runs to her grandma, Rumi,
14:26and pleads that it's not Oshin's fault.
14:28She admits that she had forced Oshin to buy her a harmonica.
14:31While everyone feared Kao,
14:33Oshin didn't.
14:34She stood up to her.
14:35Even the fight they had was just a childish game.
14:38Oshin is a very good girl,
14:40and she shouldn't be sent away from the house.
14:43Kao begs her grandmother to let Oshin stay.
14:45Grandma is touched by Kao's words.
14:47She decides that Oshin will stay in the house.
14:50From that moment on,
14:52Oshin begins living there again.
14:54Kao becomes her close friend.
14:56They even take Oshin with them to pray at the temple.
14:59Oshin is truly happy now.
15:01But then, one day,
15:02she suddenly sees her mother.
15:03Her mother has come to the area to earn some money by keeping drunk men company.
15:08Seeing her mother like this shocks Oshin.
15:11Her mother, too, is deeply embarrassed upon seeing her.
15:14That night, they quietly meet each other.
15:17Oshin's mother tells her she came here for work,
15:19and her contract will end when the season changes.
15:21She will then return home.
15:23Oshin says nothing.
15:24She simply hugs her mother and cries.
15:26Knowing that her mother has to do such work deeply hurts Oshin.
15:30She cries bitterly.
15:31Rumi sees this and understands the truth about Oshin's mother.
15:35Still, she says nothing.
15:37Instead, she comforts Oshin, telling her,
15:39This is the greatness of women.
15:41They never work for their own interests.
15:43They work for their parents, their husbands, and their children.
15:47They don't have the luxury to think of themselves.
15:50Your mother is doing this for the family.
15:52Even if this work brings her pain, she endures it.
15:55Never blame her.
15:56Never hate her.
15:57Love your mother with all your heart.
16:00Oshin breaks down in tears.
16:02Spring quietly arrives.
16:04Oshin's mother has returned home.
16:06One day, while working,
16:08Mino brings news that Oshin's grandmother is very ill,
16:11and she needs to return home immediately.
16:13But Oshin refuses to leave before finishing her share of the work.
16:17She keeps working.
16:19The other housemaids beg her to stop and leave right away.
16:22Maybe then she can still see her grandmother alive.
16:25Still, Oshin continues to work.
16:27Meanwhile, her grandmother lies on her deathbed.
16:29Though she can't see her beloved granddaughter one last time,
16:33she eats the rice Oshin had earned and sent with great satisfaction.
16:37Just then, seeing Oshin still working,
16:39Keo approaches and gives her one of her own kimonos.
16:42She tells Oshin to wear it and go to her grandmother right now.
16:45Oshin doesn't wait anymore.
16:47She rushes off toward her village,
16:49determined to see her grandmother one last time.
16:51She struggles through the journey,
16:53and when she finally reaches home,
16:55she realizes she is too late.
16:56Her grandmother is no more.
16:58She has passed away.
16:59Crying, Oshin repeatedly asks for forgiveness from her grandmother.
17:03She couldn't come to her one last time.
17:06That regret makes her pain even deeper,
17:08and with that sorrow in her heart,
17:10she falls asleep.
17:11The next morning,
17:13she wakes up and sees her mother still working.
17:16Sitting beside her grandmother's photo,
17:18her mother hands her the money,
17:20the same money her grandmother had given her,
17:22which the family had once taken from her,
17:24falsely accusing her of theft.
17:26Now they've returned it.
17:28This money becomes the last memory Oshin has of her grandmother.
17:31She watches her mother tirelessly doing all the household chores.
17:35The pain she felt seeing her mother work that humiliating job seems to fade away.
17:40Rumi's words echo in her mind.
17:42Mothers don't live for themselves.
17:44They live for their family.
17:46Oshin goes up to her mother and says,
17:48Mom, you're always working.
17:50You never rest.
17:51Her mother replies,
17:52That's a mother's job.
17:54Oshin with a soft smile says,
17:56Mom, I'm truly happy I was born as your daughter.
17:59Her mother replies,
18:01From now on, you'll stay with us.
18:03We've struggled so much for the family.
18:06No more struggling now.
18:07But Oshin says,
18:09No mom, this isn't a struggle.
