00:00What was kind of your vision for this season and how you wanted to kind of take this group beyond
00:03high school?
00:04I mean, I, you know, I, I don't know, I like the idea of sort of the Wild West of
00:09adulthood
00:10and this, this sort of frontier, like, feeling where anything is possible.
00:18And that was sort of the, just sort of the backdrop that, that interested me is, you know,
00:25who would these characters become and, and what are the consequences to those actions?
00:31And I know you had a close relationship with Angus and how did you kind of want to navigate the
00:35season without him
00:36and kind of, you know, obviously continuing his, his story?
00:40You know, I, I loved Angus very deeply and I fought very hard to keep him clean while he was
00:48here.
00:49And, and I think, you know, when, when he passed away, it, you know, it, it made me sort of
00:58step back and go,
01:01what is it, what is the story I want to tell?
01:03What is it that I want to say?
01:05What matters in life?
01:06Um, and, uh, and, and if I was going to do another season, I wanted to, to make sure that
01:13it spoke to,
01:15you know, um, that it, that it spoke to a kind of a larger idea about meaning and purpose and
01:23who we are.
01:24And, um, you know, I just, um, I don't know.
01:27I, I, it made me want to kind of tackle the idea of, of faith and, and belief in something
01:33greater than ourselves.
01:34Um, you know, uh, and I figured in terms of, you know, his storyline, I, you know, I couldn't keep
01:40him, you know, alive in real life,
01:43but I could, I could keep his character alive, you know, in, um, in the show.
01:48And so I, I kept him alive and, um, and, uh, you know, the characters, I mean, you'll see, he's
01:56got a great, he's got a great arc.
01:58You know, he would, I think he'd be very proud of it.
02:00Yeah.
02:01Beautiful way to do it.
02:02Um, and Eric Dane, obviously as well, the, one of his last roles, if not last role,
02:07how was that to kind of have him back and be able to shoot some final scenes with him?
02:10I mean, Eric was just a wonderful human being.
02:13And, um, and he was just, he called me, uh, you know, a few, a few months before, um, we
02:21started shooting.
02:21And it told me that, you know, he had been diagnosed with ALS.
02:24And, and I think, you know, I, I just said, look, Eric, you know, I love you.
02:29And I, I promise in however you show up, we're going to make it work.
02:34We're going to find a way.
02:35And, um, you know, and so we just, we just, we just tried to create the most comfortable environment.
02:42And he's magnificent in this season.
02:45He's so much fun.
02:46He's so funny.
02:47And it was also, we were shooting the wedding sequence.
02:49So there's like 28 main cast members there.
02:51And he showed up every day with such grace and dignity.
02:54And, um, you know, I, I loved him.
02:58You know, I'm, I'm sad he's gone.
03:01Um, and obviously there's some chatter.
03:04This is the last season.
03:05Should people kind of go into it expecting that, thinking that, or?
03:08I don't know.
03:09I go into every season like it's the last season.
03:12I really do.
03:13I write it like it's the last.
03:15When I put down my, my pencil at the end of the day, or when I block that final sound
03:20mix,
03:20I go, is this something I'm proud of is if this was it, you know, am I happy?
03:25And I leave the rest on God's desk.
03:28This is the end.
03:29You're happy with where everyone has kind of ended up.
03:31Oh, I can't wait for you to see the final couple episodes.
03:35I think, I think, um, I think we achieve something really beautiful.
