“The Electric State” is a roadside headache in the best way. A stranded teen sets off with a mysterious robot, because of course the world ends and the plot still needs a family reunion. Her goal is simple: find her long-lost brother. Naturally, she doesn’t do it alone.

She teams up with a cynical smuggler and his sidekick, and the movie spends a lot of time on the friction between them. The robot is the weird constant, the humans bring attitude, and the road brings complications that feel less like carefully built tension and more like the story sprinting while half looking at its own props.

At 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and a low Metascore, you already know this isn’t universally loved. Still, if you’re into messy, bold genre mixing and don’t mind when a film takes itself seriously while still being kinda ridiculous, it might be worth your time.

„The Electric State“ wirkt, als hätte jemand eine Postapokalypse aufgemacht, ein Roadmovie reingeschüttet und dann gedacht: „Ach, Hauptsache Roboter.“ Eine verwaiste Teenagerin zieht mit einem mysteriösen Roboter los, um ihren lang vermissten Bruder zu finden. Praktisch, dass sie dabei auf einen zynischen Schmuggler trifft und dessen Kumpel, die die ganze Sache mehr mit Sprüchen als mit Hoffnung erleuchten.

Das ist nicht dieses elegante „spannend bis zum Schluss“-Ding. Eher chaotische Stimmung, wilde Ideen und jede Menge Reibung zwischen Herz und Coolness. Und ja: Die Traumfänger-Optik ist groß, aber das Ergebnis wirkt trotzdem eher wie ein Projekt, das zu viel will. Wenn du Roadmovies magst, die sich nicht ganz sicher sind, was sie sein sollen, kann das genau dein Problem sein.
