Two people do the thing everyone dreads: they rent a countryside house so their parents can finally meet each other. Cute, right? Sure. Until the place is also home to a poltergeist with what feels like 400 years of practice in ruining dinner conversation. Suddenly the “let’s be normal for once” weekend turns into a low-rent supernatural nightmare with relationship awkwardness stacked on top. The Parenting plays it like a scrappy horror-comedy where the scares come with emotional tension, and the emotional tension comes with… more noises from the walls. It’s not exactly high art, and the pacing has that messy indie charm. But if you want a weird, awkward weekend horror with jokes that land hard or at least land loudly, this one’s worth your time.

Zwei Paare versuchen ein klassisches Eltern-Kennenlernen hinzukriegen. Also: Wochenendhaus, nette Gespräche, höfliches Lächeln. Und dann wird aus dem „Wir reden mal ganz entspannt miteinander“-Plan ziemlich schnell ein „Warum klappert es ausgerechnet jetzt?“. In The Parenting wohnt nämlich kein Vibe, sondern ein Poltergeist. Der hat offenbar seit 400 Jahren Zeit, sich Sorgen um ihre Kommunikation zu machen, und er nutzt sie. Das Ergebnis ist ein schräger Mix aus Grusel und Beziehungs-Komik: Mal peinlich, mal unheimlich, oft beides gleichzeitig. Wenn ihr Bock auf Horror-Komödie habt, die nicht so tut, als wäre sie Oscarwürdig, schaut rein. Wer dafür gestylt ist, wird hier zumindest gut abgelenkt.
