Marilyn Monroe exhibition in Paris reveals feminist icon behind hypersexualized star

One hundred years after Marilyn Monroe’s birth, an exhibition in Paris is offering a new perspective on the actress — long reduced to her physical appearance and her roles as a naïve blonde — celebrating her as a feminist icon and a pioneer of a form of resistance in Hollywood. "What interested me in this exhibition was (...) to step back from all the legends and narratives that are usually repeated and often heavily recycled about her. And above all, to try to recontextualize her," says Florence Tissot, curator of the retrospective on view from April 8 to May 24, 2026, at the Cinémathèque Française.
