PUV drivers warn of transport collapse as fuel prices continue to rise

Jeepney drivers protest in Pasay City on April 7, 2026 to demand the repeal of the Oil Deregulation Law as diesel prices surge to an average of ₱147.60 per liter, with some premium pumps breaching the ₱170 mark following a massive ₱19.80 hike today. According to the transport group Manibela, the relentless weekly increases triggered by the ongoing US-Israel-Iran war have forced approximately 20 percent of jeepney drivers nationwide, roughly 30,000 units in Metro Manila alone, to stop operating entirely due to daily losses exceeding ₱400. The protesters warned that without the immediate suspension of excise taxes or government intervention in pricing, the transport sector faced a total collapse as operational costs now far outpace daily earnings.
