00:00New Zealand's highways, 11,000 kilometres of some of the most spectacular and unforgiving roads on the planet.
00:10Over a thousand dedicated road safety staff are tasked with keeping our highways and byways safe.
00:19It can be a bit scary being in a car crash so I thought we'd just give you a teddy.
00:23It's a job that brings its own perils.
00:27He lost his hat. She is wild.
00:30And rewards.
00:31I like that police here. Best male.
00:33Come to New Zealand, be famous.
00:35Stay safe on the road.
00:38This is Highway Cops.
00:41Tonight, there's a car inferno on the riverbank.
00:45Someone coming out, come to me.
00:47Can you stand up for us?
00:49You're the only one in the car mate.
00:50Hit the seat mate, hit the seat, hit the seat.
00:52Life lessons in Otago.
00:54Now he's going to regret it for the rest of his life.
00:58An urgent situation in Taranaki.
01:00The only reason I went for a drive was to go get poo paper.
01:03I'll be opening it in all morning.
01:06And a clucky car full of fun heads up the Waitaki Valley.
01:11Hi.
01:11I'm the bride's me.
01:14I love you.
01:29It's winter in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
01:32The spectacular scenery is breathtaking.
01:35But it also makes driving very tricky.
01:39There is a lot of grit, almost like marbles now.
01:42Because it's not beating into the ice, because the ice is starting to melt away.
01:45So you just get that little fine film of grit on top of the road.
01:50Which is like trying to walk on marbles.
01:52For tourists on the road.
01:54It's not breaking the speed barrier, but it's breaking the speed limit.
01:58Speeding is the worst way to break the ice with Grant.
02:01Stopped you because you're going a little bit quick.
02:03I'd probably just push on the accelerator.
02:05That'll do it.
02:06Make it go faster when you press on the accelerator.
02:08You don't like the cold.
02:10Why did you come to the South Island of New Zealand in winter?
02:13Because it's scenic.
02:14It is very scenic.
02:15It's beautiful.
02:16Yeah.
02:16It is very beautiful.
02:17You think it's beautiful?
02:19Oh yeah.
02:20But yeah, driving conditions, wintertime, snow, ice, grit on the road.
02:24So please be safe, because we want you to have a good holiday.
02:28Will the next speeding tourists allow Grant to stay as cool as a cucumber?
02:34Hello.
02:34Hi.
02:35How are you?
02:36Good.
02:37You were good.
02:38But then this policeman came along and said you're speeding.
02:41Because the scenery is too pretty, you can't help but just like look around at that.
02:45Oh, that's what you came here for, wasn't it?
02:47You didn't come here for a speeding ticket.
02:50A hundred.
02:50That's as fast as we go.
02:53A bit lower.
02:53Lower.
02:54Are a bit lower?
02:55Yeah.
02:55Have you seen the state of our roads?
02:57And our drivers?
02:58Yeah, that's why.
02:59Yeah, that's why.
03:01Grant has some final important advice for the young Aussie couple.
03:05If he's going to spend 80 bucks on speeding tickets, you spend 80 bucks on something for
03:08yourself.
03:09Totally.
03:11As the snow melts, the speeds are increasing.
03:15122.
03:16And it turns out this car is another one carrying a precious cargo.
03:20Why did I stop Dad?
03:22Because he was going 120.
03:25Oh, well done.
03:26He was going too fast, wasn't he?
03:28I want to ride in a police car.
03:30You want to ride in the police car?
03:31Or should that be precocious cargo?
03:34Yeah.
03:34Do you want to come and jump in there now?
03:35And just be careful of the road because people speed along here.
03:41What's your name, love?
03:43Ava.
03:43Ava.
03:44Come on back here, Ava.
03:47So this car is called a Skoda.
03:50Just a super cool school kid in a Skoda.
03:53What could go wrong?
03:54That's what makes all the lights and everything go.
03:57Okay Grant, it's pop quiz time.
03:59Where are all your handcuffs?
04:01My handcuffs?
04:02I've got handcuffs here somewhere.
04:03Yeah.
04:04There's stuff here.
04:05There's a baton there.
04:06There's stuff there.
04:07I've got lots of stuff.
04:09Sorry?
04:09That's a gaslight.
04:11That's a taser.
04:12Yeah, don't jump in the driver's seat.
04:15There you go.
04:16So, that was a good lesson, wasn't it?
04:19Which was...
04:20He made a mistake at the exact wrong time.
04:23And now he's going to regret it for the rest of his life.
04:27Any questions, anyone?
04:29Oh, we can't go through the traffic lights if we're not in a hurry.
04:32It's only for an emergency.
04:35Policers can go in red lights if it's an emergency.
04:42What else have you learnt, Ava?
04:46That polices can arrest polices.
04:49Anything to add, Grant?
04:50Yes, ice and snow, be slow.
04:53Ice and snow, be slow.
04:55I like it.
04:56Right, Ava, you need to jump back in and put your seatbelt on, don't you?
04:59What if I don't?
05:00What if you don't?
05:01We'll get a ticket.
05:02No, we'll get it.
05:03If you don't put your seatbelt on, we get a ticket.
05:05Just one more question.
05:07See you guys.
05:09Do I have a child?
05:11Yes, I have a child.
05:13Yes, I have a lovely wife.
05:15I have to say that.
05:16It's on TV.
05:17She is a policewoman.
05:18You're very intuitive, Ava.
05:20See you later.
05:23There was lots going on there.
05:25But that's alright.
05:26A positive interaction.
05:32The mighty Clutha River boasts New Zealand's highest volume of water and, tucked beside it,
05:39is State Highway 8 and the picturesque town of Roxburgh.
05:43Constable James McDonald is just driving through the old gold mining town when he gets a call
05:49to look out for a dangerous driver.
05:51Vehicle heading north down State Highway 8, heading towards Roxburgh.
05:56Vehicle was described as going 140 over 100 and it was swerving off the road and passing
06:02all this oncoming traffic.
06:03We don't have a registration but it was two doors, late model, silver and the skyline.
06:09This is the skyline.
06:10Keep an eye for that as well.
06:11But James hasn't got time to spot the skyline because he needs to be somewhere else.
06:17A car has gone 50 metres down into a paddock and it's upside down.
06:23Copy.
06:2310-2 from Roxburgh.
06:26And he needs to be there fast.
06:29Got a car on fire here.
06:31It's in amongst the trees.
06:34A little large tree on fire.
06:36Quite intense flames.
06:37Nice.
06:38The huge column of smoke is already clearly visible.
06:42One police officer and some medics are already on the scene.
06:46So James goes to see where he's needed most.
06:51The other officer is trying to get through the intense heat to the burning car to try and locate the
06:57occupants.
06:58We don't know anyone's on there.
07:01The fire service has arrived and James has joined the first officer.
07:06When...
07:07Oh, there's someone coming out.
07:08Coming to me.
07:09They have to get away from the car and find out if anyone else is still in the raging inferno.
07:15Come on out, mate.
07:16Come on out, mate.
07:20Come on out, mate.
07:21Can you stand up for us?
07:22Can you stand up?
07:24Stand up.
07:27Take time, take your time, take your time, take your time.
07:30Take your time.
07:31Are you the only one in the car?
07:35The only one in the car, mate.
07:38luckily the medical first responders are on hand so James doesn't have to
07:44administer first aid comms ODT one sit rep he has to let everyone know this
07:50situation one person in the car who has managed to get out and has been seen by
07:56St John fire ambo on scene car store on fire James really needs to see that
08:08burning car to confirm there are no passengers to see if it is the car from
08:13the dangerous driving complaint but the flames are way too intense hopefully
08:21they can get the fire under control before they run out of water
08:39on the banks of the Clutha River a car is consumed in a blazing inferno can you
08:51first responders are trying to fight the flames the injured driver is stable
09:04enough to move to the shade but they still can't confirm he was alone in the car
09:12coming in some shade hey it's crucial to get as much information from the clearly
09:20groggy and disoriented man as they can as quickly as possible was anyone else in
09:26the car not just you good man good man just relax just relax with me what's your
09:32name brother a first name is a start but there's a lot more to find out you done
09:39well to get out of the car the driver can't shed any light on how he got out of the
09:55car but he says
09:57there was no one else with him yeah we can't confirm he's saying that there wasn't but we have to
10:02be
10:02able to check so once fire have made it safe then we'll be able to do an examination but hopefully
10:08it's just him and he's lucky to get out so he's status too he's taking a big head knock but
10:14his
10:14heart is pretty good in that and his vitals are reasonably good so I think we're probably gonna get
10:19a halo inbound just because we're so far away from an ED so the immediate threat has been dealt
10:25with and now there are other details to work out the driver smells strongly of alcohol and James
10:33suspects this might be the speeding vehicle that people have been phoning police about how he left
10:39the road and traveled so far before hitting the tree is looking increasingly odd so we believe that
10:44it's the one you that came in but with a time delay things move pretty quickly in our job you
10:50see
10:51there you've got massive oar marks he's driving northbound what it looks like he's gone too far
10:58over the foreground and then he's just suddenly grabbed that wheel and just hit across the wrong
11:04side of the road over the verge through the paddock about 200 meters 250 meters down a bank and into
11:12a
11:12tree and in the cars caught fire finally everyone's suspicions are confirmed a firefighter has managed to get
11:18the number plate of the burnt vehicle it does belong to the silver nissan skyline with the
11:24dangerous driving complaint this reckless driver has put himself other road users and emergency
11:30services in grave danger oh it was pretty hot I was just glad that he was away from the car
11:36enough
11:36for us to get him because if we were sort of any closer we would have been putting us out
11:42for quite a bit of harm
11:45the chopper has arrived from Dunedin yes I've just left the pyramid to do their thing but it sounds like
11:51he hasn't deteriorated so that it's getting unstable for transport to Dunedin at this stage and James can
11:57finally approach the car I'll see a bit of a scene exam on the car just visual just to have
12:03a look at
12:03it obviously it's in ash really but just have a look and see if there's anything else that indicates
12:09it not wearing a seat belt and out the windscreen just we're thinking possible ejection out the front
12:15windscreen maybe it caused a head injury there's the river down there he is shocked to see how close
12:21it came to ending up in the river front windscreen's all pushed out could have well been an ejection out
12:29the
12:29front windscreen for now a huge crew of first responders are looking after the driver and
12:35removing any danger hey survived it I don't know no idea done an awesome job yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
12:48thanks guys thanks for your help thanks but the turnout man all of the turnout all within probably
12:5510 minutes you know so pretty pretty lucky basically what we're left with now is a scene
13:01examination so serious crash you're going to come down the driver has gone to hospital so we'll get
13:10bloods done to determine whether alcohol and drugs were affected and then we'll put it all together
13:16and decide what happens with it basically but just glad no one else was injured
13:30the central feature of Taranaki region is the perfect picture of volcanic glory Taranaki Mauma
13:40trolling the spider web of roads around its base sergeant Pat Duffy has spotted a vehicle that piques his
13:46curiosity just going to catch up to this van had three people along the front seat and my money's on
13:53the
13:53front seat passengers you're probably not wearing a seat belt and on second look at the van it's
13:57quite rough looking it's missing its rear window covered in plastic why is this man waving loo paper
14:06like a white flag Pat needs to get to the bottom of this this driver has an urgent need to
14:16explain
14:17everything but first Pat needs to check what's going on in the van the reason why I stopped you three
14:32people in the front seat just wanted to check that everyone's got their seat belts on bro all righty
14:45there's a lot here that Pat needs to unpack so what's the story with your license anyhow
14:49I have my fault yeah yeah yeah I've just got to reinstate it I've been given compliance on the van
14:58license no worries there's some stuff that need doing what stuff the driver is keen to leave no
15:05detail out oh it's rusty all the way through here I've fixed a whole lot okay so it failed on
15:10the
15:10reason on that yep and I've been doing a thing a week to get it going this is my Christmas
15:15present
15:16I'm just waiting for the guy to turn up to do it okay it's already been paid for no it's
15:20looking
15:20at the state of your tires too hey these ones are yeah I've just got to wait for the tire
15:23shop to be open to
15:24put two of the tires onto the rims so they're all the same rims all around I was working on
15:28it before
15:29I got locked up I got locked up and it just sort of set me back a little bit that's
15:33all it might
15:33take more than two ply to wipe this driver's slate clean the only reason I went for a drive was
15:38to go
15:39get poo paper it's time to clean up this mess just got to do the usual checks there you haven't
15:45been drinking at all today I had drinks last night so last night a little bit on my breath but
15:49was it
15:50a big session last night you know how I can carry through to the next day
15:53yeah yeah yeah I sort of waited till about now before we yeah you were feeling okay in yourself
15:58yeah I mean that's your good indicator if you're not feeling right then that's when you should be
16:02saying nah yeah not going there right yeah I've been done for it three times I'm not that stupid
16:06anymore so this is not the first time he's done this let's hope he's learned sweet so other than oh
16:14yeah so what's wrong with the van it's rich I need to read them yeah yeah okay definitely need a
16:19new
16:19plate as well I mean it's hard to read I actually thought there wasn't a plate that plate I don't
16:26know what it's to but the one at the back to my old laser Pat realizes he needs to put
16:32a cap on both
16:33his head and the number of identities of this van how long that was the last one and he said
16:50just go
16:50through your essentials on it and that's it that's why I walked out of the toilet paper yeah yeah pretty
16:58pretty essential yeah no argument on that front okay Pat needs to unroll this paper trail comms PAHS one
17:09it's just off of the van it's got two different number plates in a different rego label just after
17:14an engine chassis check things the front number plate yeah there was a petrol drive-off
17:29in Karanaki sergeant Pat Duffy is dealing with a driver making an urgent trip in a dodgy van hiding
17:36many identities the front number plate yeah there was a petrol drive-off there is footage so but I
17:46can't access that so I'd have to have a look at it apparently the front plates done people run off
17:51yeah that's all right wasn't me comms checks the CCTV footage and confirms this van wasn't involved in
17:59the drive-off one thing still on the list is the matter of the driver's license status your lost as
18:12you see it is reinstate only it is going to be a ticket for the the license but that's easily
18:17fixed
18:17I'm going to push it out to 56 days I will need to take a couple of photos Pat has
18:22a long list of bolts to
18:23photograph here but missed the best shot of the day which is definitely this one these two what I
18:32do need to do though now as well as forbid you from driving while you're on a reinstate I need
18:37to take the plate off the car because it's been involved in the petrol drive-off so we don't want
18:40that showing up again I'll follow you around the corner and then we'll do the paperwork the air okay
18:45because I can't let you drive from here kind of curious why it takes three to go and pick up
18:49a
18:49toilet roll but hey every now and then one of us has got to tap the starter motor for it
19:01to start
19:01he's having starter motor issues vehicle don't start tap the starter motor
19:24back at home the driver's wasting no time getting the rogue plates off his van
19:31thank you want to keep the screw the next one no they'll probably put new screws in there yeah
19:38you want those temper proof ones so no one can nick off of them speaking of things the boys don't
19:43want
19:44nicked better than bloody newspaper I'll tell you if you're nice to the police they're nice to you
19:51make sure your vehicle is always legit and stay safe on the road yeah just attaching the
20:00non-op order stickers on the on the vehicle and allowed to be removed until it's sorted even
20:05though the rear windows now plastic okay boys we are done enjoy the day the three non drivers head
20:15inside past their large new garden ornament which is such a relief there are a good bunch of lads to
20:22talk to and deal with actually so I hope they do get things sorted been given a bit of a
20:27chance for
20:33that the highways of North Otaku are the gateway to the adventure capital of Aotearoa can't complain
20:40with you know working around these mountains and the lakes and you know it's pretty crazy around here
20:48the constable Kieran Reeve that means meeting all kinds of people heading away on big fun adventures get
20:55to enjoy a little bit of that and watching everyone enjoy the Sun and getting on the
21:00lakeside and burning themselves but there's no need to rush the fun will still be there if you're 10
21:06minutes late a little bit quick oh they've pulled over Kieran can see this might be a full load of
21:12fun
21:13seekers looks like a car full so potentially family and just down for a holiday today what are you up
21:21to for
21:22the day a car full of six chicks heading to a party sounds like an episode of the Kardashians
21:45a flock of hens flown in from Oamaru sending a message into the future for the husband-to-be hi
21:56darling I love you promise to not get too rowdy
22:02today that's a wee pre-party bonus of an eighty dollar fine and twenty demerits
22:07going to be even later now enjoy your time drive safe okay see you later
22:16an infringement notice in the email and hopefully that'll slow her down the speeding family received a fine of one
22:24hundred and seventy dollars for going twenty two kilometers over the limit this man got a twelve month disqualification over
22:31five thousand dollars
22:32in fines and reparation to pay and five months home detention he had to get counseling and a zero alcohol
22:38license the driver of the van has still not reinstated his license and now owes a four hundred dollar fine
22:45any vehicle he is caught driving from now on will be impounded on the spot
22:49drugs and alcohol are a factor in forty four percent of all the fatal crashes never drive under the influence
22:56of drugs or alcohol
