00:27And award-winning design consultant Siobhan Lahm.
00:30I mean, I would love this. I would love this.
00:32I will take it all and bring it to my home.
00:34It won't fit, but I'd love it.
00:36And this year, it's not just their scores that they'll have to decide.
00:40After the winner of the episode is revealed,
00:42we will get a chance to use our golden key of one of the runners-up.
00:47We get one key throughout the series, so we've got to use it wisely.
00:52The search continues for Ireland's Home of the Year.
00:58Finn Barr bought this terraced home in Dublin in 2021.
01:02And shortly after, met his partner Garrett.
01:04We hit it off straight away.
01:06And then as soon as I seen that he lived near the street where they filmed the Spice Girls stop
01:09video, I was sold.
01:11Something special about these old houses has got plenty of character in it.
01:15I just needed to put my own stamp in it.
01:17I designed everything myself.
01:19I built a lot of the furniture myself.
01:21The media unit, the coffee table, the cabinets upstairs and everything.
01:24Even out in the garden, DIY'd all that.
01:27Got my father up out of retirement.
01:30Hard labor.
01:31Living in a building site for three years, it was good fun.
01:35Keeping the dust out of some bars here.
01:37This chair is our favorite spot in the home.
01:39Both myself and Garrett love sitting in this spot.
01:41It's first come, first serve.
01:42The sun coming in in the evening.
01:44We can make the cocktails here beside us.
01:46Hard to imagine back when it was at its worst, there was piles of wood everywhere.
01:52This chair has replaced a stack of bags of cement, so that's an upgrade in itself.
01:57It blows my mind that we kind of were able to pull off something like this.
02:01I'm really proud sitting in that chair looking at all the hard work with a cocktail in hand.
02:06Just a real feeling of accomplishment.
02:08Yeah, exactly, yeah.
02:10The judges must now assess the home armed with only the basic facts about the property and its owners.
02:16What a fabulous bijou residence in North Dublin.
02:19I love the contrast between the old brickwork and the new window.
02:24Looking at this home, it's clear that the homeowners have carried out quite a bit of work.
02:28They've cleaned and repointed the brickwork.
02:30There's contemporary-style new windows.
02:32There's a muted color palette, but I'm not sure what to expect.
02:36I'm really interested to see what these homeowners have done with space,
02:39like how they've reconfigured it, because it's a petite sight.
02:42Let's explore more.
02:51Straight into a beautiful kitchen.
02:54Oh, I love that.
02:55Oh, isn't this terrific?
02:56This is gorgeous.
02:58There's so many interesting textures.
03:00I love that they've tiled this wall.
03:03Those are tiles, yeah.
03:04Yeah, yeah.
03:04It's creating a really beautiful pattern.
03:07And I love the green.
03:09Green.
03:09That green is beautiful.
03:10Isn't it?
03:10And the handles are really nicely detailed.
03:13They are.
03:14Smashing use of space.
03:15And it's bright.
03:16It's clever in some respects, because you've got a kitchen,
03:19you've got a generous living area,
03:20dining, kind of TV.
03:22So the homeowners have managed to fit quite a lot into,
03:24which is a compact space.
03:26But, for me, they just try too hard.
03:29There needs to be a bit of editing.
03:31It's like they've gathered everything that they like,
03:33from every time period, from every place that they've been in,
03:35and put it into this one room.
03:37You've got the glass block, which is dated.
03:40Oh!
03:41Dated!
03:42That's, that's like, that's hot.
03:44Glass blocks are hot.
03:46They're in, baby.
03:47And I love the cork on the wall.
03:50I think the materials that they've used are stunning.
03:52It's adding gorgeous depth and pattern.
03:55One of the things that I look for when I come into a home like this
03:57is personality.
03:58And this place is bursting with it.
04:01Ah, look what we have here.
04:02The favourite spot.
04:04An absolutely gorgeous mid-century chair as well,
04:07so that makes a lot of sense for these homeowners.
04:09They're very stylish.
04:10I love this little home bar that the homeowners have installed
04:13in the shelving.
04:14It's making really great use of the space.
04:16Well, I think it's great, because you fling open the doors,
04:18and you've got that beautiful little west-facing terrace.
04:22Love the planting, and I particularly like the green wall.
04:25And if you like, those colours and nature are coming back into the house.
04:31Something wasn't sitting quite right with me,
04:32but standing here, looking around,
04:35I get a sense that the homeowners are connected somehow
04:38with the west or the south of Ireland.
04:40It transports me to another place, which isn't the city centre.
04:44For me, it's the country.
04:45For me, the blue unit under the television is out of place,
04:50and it's quite big.
04:51And then we have a round table,
04:54and therefore we have to have an obligatory round mat.
04:57To me, the mat doesn't work in this room,
05:01along with the rug under the dining table.
05:04The issue with it is every time you pull the dining table out,
05:07the rug's in the wrong place,
05:09and I think I would rather have seen the timber floors.
05:16It's a utility and shower room.
05:18I didn't expect to find such a spacious, light-filled,
05:22clever layout with utility and shower room.
05:25And the homeowners have been consistent
05:26in terms of their inspirations and their colour palette
05:29carrying through the earthy tones.
05:30And even the hand towels.
05:32You know, it reminds me of seaweed or moss.
05:34I just think it's a great bathroom.
05:36Lovely colour scheme. It's really bold.
05:38That wood is such a lovely material in a bathroom,
05:42and it's bringing that warmth.
05:43The texture of those drawers is fantastic.
05:46And to have this little utility area separate on its own
05:49is really handy in a house, especially of this size, I think.
05:52I absolutely love it.
06:02I love these rooms because you have the form and the shape of the house.
06:07Wow.
06:07This home is amazing.
06:09It's from that hall to over there.
06:11That's the full width of this home.
06:14And the colour scheme in here, I think, is just yummy.
06:16The pink with the ochre is utterly gorgeous.
06:20And I love that they brought marble in.
06:22Marble in a bedroom is quite unusual, but I'm really...
06:25I'm digging it.
06:25I think the layout in this bedroom is good.
06:28There's definite consistency in terms of the materiality,
06:31the plywood built-in shelves.
06:32The only thing that I would suggest changing is
06:35that if they had storage, that would be in the one colour
06:37or the one material or designed as one.
06:41Yeah, I completely agree.
06:42It should be the same colour for consistency.
06:44I have a little issue with this art print.
06:47It's just a little small for this space.
06:49I feel like if it was bigger, it would really anchor the space
06:53and it would just give us a focal point.
06:55I think it's fascinating because it's so small on a big wall.
06:59And therefore, interestingly, you want to investigate it.
07:04And it's off centre.
07:05Yeah, I love it.
07:06That takes bravery.
07:07Oh, I love it.
07:09The home will now be marked out of ten.
07:11One score will be held back until the judges have seen all three homes,
07:14when their combined scores will be revealed.
07:17This is a great example of an artisan's terraced house
07:21refurbished into a modern city pad.
07:24The outside terrace is a magical west-facing oasis of calm and comfort.
07:29For me, I don't think there was a need for the rugs
07:32in the living and dining area.
07:34But this home is full of personality and charm,
07:37and I'm giving it an eight.
07:40I enjoy the eclectic mix of styles the homeowners embraced.
07:44The kitchen is particularly delicious.
07:46However, the bedroom would have been more successful
07:48if the storage units were the same colour and the same material.
07:51I give this home a nine.
07:55As I walked through the home,
07:56the homeowners' interests and passions became clearer to me
07:59through their choice of materials, textures and colour palette.
08:01Although this home is filled with the homeowners' personality,
08:04it could benefit from editing.
08:09Erika and Liam live in this self-built home in Mayo
08:12with their son and their three daughters.
08:15We commenced work on the site in October 2018.
08:19And we moved in June 22.
08:22Three kids later.
08:24Yeah.
08:24The style of our home is classic contemporary,
08:28a nice, bright, airy space.
08:29I absolutely love interiors,
08:31so to have a blank space to create our own style was the dream.
08:36We really wanted a light-filled hallway,
08:39which is hard to achieve in a bungalow.
08:42People were confused.
08:43Why is there a window in the centre of your house?
08:45But when the house was completed, they could see our vision.
08:47So this is our favourite spot in our home,
08:50our sofa in our sitting room.
08:51The kids have the run of the house,
08:53but they know in here is a no-go zone.
08:56This is for mum and dad to relax and unwind when they go to bed.
08:59Every year we watch the show
09:00and we adore hearing the judges' feedback
09:03on all the different styles and designs,
09:05and we're excited to see what they're going to say about our home.
09:08Yeah.
09:11This new-build family home
09:13has a very pleasing symmetrical facade.
09:15I love the sash windows
09:16and those period-style wall sconces.
09:19You know, they're all kind of coming together
09:20to create a traditional feel.
09:22And I wonder, is that traditional style
09:24going to continue on the inside of this home?
09:26For me, I love the simplicity of the architecture,
09:29but best of all, I love this fella over here.
09:33Isn't that great?
09:41Oh, a lovely, big, bright entrance hall.
09:45Isn't that window amazing?
09:47You're looking into what is obviously
09:49the kitchen, dining, living area.
09:51The white walls and ceiling are great.
09:53The tone of the floor, that's a great design move
09:56because it instantly tells you where to go,
09:59but it provides you a connection
10:00right through the home and to the outside.
10:03Oh, my goodness.
10:06Look at the size of the kitchen.
10:09It's just humongous.
10:11Very interesting because all of a sudden,
10:13the window really comes into play between the hall
10:17and the dining area.
10:18When I look around at all the finishes,
10:20you know, the light pendants, the wall sconces,
10:22these homeowners are definitely consistent.
10:24It's traditional.
10:26Again, it does feel quite elegant.
10:28I do find myself looking for something.
10:30I'm looking for a different colour on the panelling
10:33or a different colour on the walls.
10:36It feels like it's incredibly white.
10:39I think the colour palette works very well.
10:41This isn't the place for bright colour, Siobhan.
10:43Look at this overall room.
10:44There's plenty of colour.
10:46But as much as I think the layout works
10:48and the tones work, this is a new-built home.
10:50The various styles are in here.
10:51Period, Victorian, Edwardian.
10:53They represented progressive, contemporary, new-build
10:57at the time in which they were first designed.
10:58Why can't we design a new-built home that's a new-built home?
11:02Why are we always looking to the past?
11:04We'll never get anywhere if we keep doing that.
11:06Buildings in the 2020s, homes built now,
11:09they need to represent the character, the spirit,
11:13the time that we live in.
11:14These homeowners think this sort of style is beautiful
11:18and that's why they have created this home.
11:21A homeowner's home needs to reflect them
11:24and if they want to build a new build
11:27that has traditional or classic features,
11:29that is their prerogative.
11:31Go for it.
11:32It shouldn't concern anybody else.
11:33It's their home.
11:34Really what I'm looking for in this home
11:37is exactly what I see in front of me.
11:40Elegance, style and comfort.
11:48Look at this beautiful little TV room.
11:52And we have the favourite spot.
11:55I'm guessing for the homeowners this is where you come to
11:58to get away from everything else.
12:00It's an intimate living space.
12:02It's a contrast with the openness of the open plan.
12:05It's incredibly calm so it makes so much sense
12:07that it's the favourite spot.
12:09I really enjoy this room.
12:20Now, here we are in the main bedroom.
12:24Look at that pendant light.
12:26Isn't that gorgeous?
12:27I just love the green on the lamps.
12:29Lovely little pop of colour.
12:32A very simple bedroom but very elegant.
12:35I actually expect to walk in here and there to be an explosion
12:39of different styles and colours.
12:40But there's these same subtle colour tones
12:43that were used in the kind of more public areas.
12:45It makes sense in the main bedroom.
12:46It's about tranquility.
12:47It's about relaxation.
12:49It's about calmness.
12:56Oh, look at this walk-in wardrobe.
12:59Oh, this is fabulous.
13:01It's just wonderful.
13:02The joinery is beautiful in a light oak.
13:05Lots of storage.
13:06Great make-up.
13:07Look at where you can put your make-up on.
13:08And then I'm looking into that yummy bathroom.

13:13Beautiful his-and-hers sink and yummy big his-and-hers shower.
13:18This is an absolutely beautiful en-suite.
13:21I mean, I would love this.

13:23I will take it all and bring it to my home.
13:25It won't fit, but I'd love it.
13:26I'm going to have to put it in the back garden for now.
13:29But once I get the extension, I'll put it in somewhere.

13:41It's just extraordinary.

13:46It's beautiful, but it just doesn't belong in this home.

13:51They're playing with interiors, which I love.
13:54Imagine being a guest opening that door and coming into this room.
13:58I'll tell you, your breath will be taken away.
14:00It is just a magical wallpaper.
14:06White walls, muted tones, and carefully chosen materials and furniture create a calm atmosphere in the circulation areas, the open
14:14plan, and the main bedroom.
14:16Yet I find this home confusing and makes it periods and references which don't make sense for me in a
14:22new-built home.
14:22I give it a seven.
14:25The homeowners have shown their creativity in their selection of yummy furniture, thoughtful colour palette, and that ingenious glass window
14:35between the hall and the dining room.
14:37It's a fantastic family home, and I'm giving it a ten.
14:43These homeowners have created a spacious, elegant family home with a traditional feel.
14:48The rooms where the homeowners let loose, like the guest bedroom, are great fun.
14:53I want more of this.
14:54All in all, this classic family home feels spacious, neutral, and sophisticated, with gorgeous views to enjoy.
15:03I love upside-down houses.
15:06How wrong were you?
15:07Oh, darling, I'm so wrong.
15:12Leisha fell in love with this two-bedroom home in Galway when she bought it in 2022.
15:17It's an unusual house with a lovely church, which kind of has a fairytale element to it.
15:22When I came to view it, I didn't realise that the house was upside-down, so to speak.
15:26Two bedrooms downstairs with one bathroom, and the living is upstairs.
15:30Originally, there was a landing, a galley kitchen, and a lounge space, but all separate.
15:36I decided to rip the whole thing apart, took down a couple of internal walls, put a whole new flooring,
15:42a whole new kitchen,
15:42and it just opened up the space, and it just makes for a better living area.
15:47This is my favourite spot.
15:49It's situated in the bow window of the turret, and it's got gorgeous views of Galway Bay,
15:54and it's just a lovely place to have a cup of coffee or read a book.
15:58It's an honour to have such esteemed people coming into my home to have a look around.
16:02I think when you're in situ, and living in your own space, there's things that you mightn't see,
16:06and I think it'll be interesting to hear what they have to say about the place.
16:12Here we are at a naughty 90s residential development.
16:16Turret on the corner, fleur-de-lis on top, so all excited to see the inside.
16:26Now, ooh, look at these patterned tiles. They're fab.
16:30It's actually quite a simple, pared-back hall. I love the white. I love the texture of these. These are
16:37great.
16:37It's great that the homeowner has painted the walls and ceiling white. I think that's the right move for a
16:41hall of this size.
16:42But for me, the choice of floor tile is too busy. I would have used a tile that was just
16:46one colour.
16:47I'd agree with you there, Amanda. Like, everything's painted white, the walls and everything else, but then the doors are
16:52in taupe.
16:53I think a glass door there would have given relief to this hall. As you enter into the living room
16:59or the kitchen dining, I just feel claustrophobic.

17:08Oh! It's a bedroom. I was not expecting that at all. It's beautifully bright. I'm delighted.
17:17Yeah, I love upside-down houses. How wrong were you?
17:20Oh, darling. I'm so wrong. Lovely bedroom. Very simple. All in white. Beautiful lamps.
17:26This is a lovely room. I'm actually really happy to find the main bedroom at this level, because I'm thinking
17:32now that the living has got the view of Galway Bay.
17:35But the bedroom itself, it feels very calm. It feels tranquil. I think it's great that they've painted it white.
17:41I love those contemporary art pieces. They're bringing great pops of colour in. It's all very subtle. It's incredibly calming.
17:48I think it's a beautiful bedroom.
17:50Can we have a moment of appreciation for a main bedroom that's been done well?

17:57What I would have done, however, given the compact size of the ground floor, I definitely would have looked at
18:02having one continuous floor finish from the hall bedroom and to the outside.
18:09Now, out to this beautiful terrace. This must be such a little gem of a sun trap.
18:17I take back what I said about having a continuous floor finish from inside to out, because I'm enjoying the
18:23texture and the warmth of this brick terrace.
18:25The home owners have continued the white walls outside, so there's a connection between inside and out.
18:30For the first time, Amanda, I agree with you. The white is effective in this space, and I love to
18:35see olive trees in a back garden.
18:40Now, we have the downstairs shower room. This is beautiful. Again, you know, it's bright, it's white, we've got some
18:49beautiful brass finishes.
18:50I love that the home owners continued that fab floor tile from the hallway into the bathroom.
18:55The pattern of the tile for me is too busy, but look, there's no threshold detail.
19:00Du pois for that.
19:03Oh, beautiful bedroom. The turret has arrived. I just love the colour of the wardrobe.
19:10And the linens on the bed are just wonderful.
19:13Funny enough, I'd like to have seen a piece of art on the wall over the bed.
19:17Or a mirror, which would actually reflect that art.
19:20Yeah.
19:20And also bounce light all around the room, so just a tiny little addition would make a huge difference.
19:33Oh, this is just amazing.
19:37I think it's brilliant having the kitchen and the living on the first floor in this home.
19:40It just makes, it makes so much sense.
19:43You have so much more space up here by having an open plan.
19:46When we walked in, I'd say I was a little bit disappointed with the hallway,
19:49but now it all makes sense because it wants you to come up here and it's so light filled.
19:54Isn't it just super to have an upside down house?
19:58It's so much more light and privacy when you're on the first floor.
20:03So it's really well considered.
20:09Look at this, this chair, wild. I just love it.

20:21And sitting here, I've got beautiful view over Galway Bay.
20:24I think it's magical to be able to see the scene.
20:27This is what I was hoping for when we were standing outside.
20:30I think it's a brilliant favourite spot.
20:32Best seat in the house.
20:34I adore the pieces that the homeowner has introduced, like the mid-century sideboard
20:39and this beautiful marble coffee table.
20:41I do think, though, that the sofas detract from the overall enjoyment of this room.
20:48They feel heavy. They feel much more traditional.
20:51And I got to tell you, I don't love the colour.
20:53These couches work perfectly. The arrangement works. Loads of space.
20:58For me, all that's missing are three patterned cushions on each couch. That's all.
21:08Walking up to that red brick turret, I was expecting something a little bit wild.
21:12But upon entering the front door, it became clear that this homeowner has designed with intention
21:17and has an eye for great design.
21:19I do think the open plan area lacks colour, especially when you consider those incredible
21:24abstract art pieces dotted throughout.
21:26All in all, this is a thoughtful, balanced and expertly designed home.
21:30I give it a nine.
21:33The homeowner's restrained approach creates a calm atmosphere,
21:37particularly in the ground floor bedrooms.
21:39For me, the tiles in the hall and the shower room are too busy.
21:43It would have worked much better if the timber floor in the bedrooms had continued throughout.
21:47I score this home an eight.
21:51My first impression of the hallway was modest, but as the layout and design intent revealed themselves,
21:58I quickly became enamoured.
22:00I loved my tour of this considered simple and beautifully designed home.
22:08Now that the judges have visited all three homes, it's time to see how they measure up against each other.
22:14First, Amanda reveals her score for the colourful home in Dublin.
22:18It was very much a home that was full of personality, and you could understand who the homeowners were and
22:23their interests.
22:24But that said, there was just a little bit too much of everything in this home,
22:28and I think it would have benefited from editing.
22:30I gave this home a seven.
22:31So, a seven, an eight, and a nine is 24.
22:36That's far too low for this home.
22:39Next, Siobhan reveals her score for the new-built home in Mayo.
22:43This is a traditional, elegant family home, incredibly spacious.
22:48For me, the home lacked colour and contrast.
22:52And for that reason, I gave this home an eight.

22:56A seven, an eight, and a ten, 25.
23:00Finally, Huw reveals his score for the upside-down home in Galway.
23:06Beautiful arrangement between the bedroom downstairs and that great outside terrace.
23:10And then upstairs for me, that was the most brilliant layout.
23:13It was a real sense of openness and space.
23:17And I gave it a nine.
