00:00Surveys show that chocolate chip cookies are the favorite cookie amongst Americans.
00:04It's estimated that we gobble down 7 billion chocolate chip cookies annually.
00:08Nom nom nom nom.
00:09That works out to about 21 cookies per person per year.
00:12Personally, I could polish off 21 in one sitting, let alone in one year, but hey, that's just me.
00:18So, have you always wondered the origin of the chocolate chip cookie?
00:22We travel back to the 1930s.
00:24In a cozy roadside inn called the Toll House, Ruth Wakefield set out to make chocolate cookies to serve her
00:31guests.
00:31When she realized she was out of baker's chocolate, instead, she grabbed a bar of Nestle semi-sweet chocolate, chopped
00:39it into chunks, and tossed it into the dough.
00:41Instead of melting, the chocolate softened.
00:44It held its shape and created tiny pockets of molten joy.
00:48And just like that, the chocolate chip cookie was born.
00:53Always wondered, stream it now, wherever you get your podcasts.
