A US Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II was shot down in Iran while attempting to rescue crew members from the downed F-15 Strike Eagle fighter jet. According to US officials, the pilot safely ejected over friendly territory and was unharmed.

Known as the Warthog, the A-10 has been in service since 1977… but the Air Force has been pushing to retire it from service, deeming the aircraft obsolete.

00:20A-10s entered the war in March to chase Iranian boats in the
00:24Strait of Hormuz which remains largely closed by Iran. Known as the Warthog,
00:29the A-10 has been in service since 1977 but the Air Force has been pushing to
00:34retire it from service deeming the aircraft obsolete. For now though over 160
00:40Warthogs remain in service. They carry rockets missiles and bombs but they're
00:46best known for their 30 millimeter Gatling style autocannons which make a unique
00:51sound. The Air Force is looking to F-35A Lightning II stealth fighters to take over
00:58A-10 missions but for now the Warthog flies on as the war in Iran continues.
